4-0 out of 5 stars Let's Not Go Completely Overboard
Like pretty much anything in which Neil's involved, this a fine and useful work. The reviews of Teddy Millon's Axis II taxonomic extensions are worth most of the considerable price of admission here all by themselves. But after 30 years in the field, I'll warn any newcomers that getting any too rigid with treatment plan rollouts will make you as nuts at the people you're treating.
5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely essential!
If you write treatment plans then you must have this book.Well organized and easy to follow for any mental health professional. It saves me time and allows me to customize my treatment plans for my clients' individual needs. If you own the DSM-IV, this book is the perfect companion.Regardless of theoretical orientation this book will help you to satisfy the demands of managed care.It is indispensable and, in today's world of managed care, this book is the ultimate time saver. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Narcissism Unveiled
If you want to learn more about pathological narcissism, borderline conditions and other low-organization personalities - this book is for you. Essentially a textbook, it is a surprisingly interesting read (case studies intersdpersed). Some professional jargon and the book's bias in favour of psychodynamic theories may make best as a second read about narcissism. Sam Vaknin, author of 'Malignant Self Love - Narcissism Revisited'.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent and easy to read
As the college instructor who chose this textbook, I find this book to be one of the most enjoyed by my students. They find it easy to read, interesting, and informative.1-0 out of 5 stars Weak format for a subject with a lot of detail
Most textbooks will have the glossary terms on the sides of the pages for you to have the opportunity to read the definition there as well as within the text. This textbook doesn't do that. They have the whole glossary at the end but that's not real helpful at all for taking notes. The subject itself is confusing with multiple paradigms to approaching the same disorders and so many disorders within the field of Abnormal Psychology.Your not going to get around that but that's all the more reason to get a good textbook that presents the info as clearly as possible. This textbook goes over all the disorders towards the beggining then again later in greater detail, that was a real waste of time and paper. Some subjects in school can be boring and sometimes the teachers can make it more boring, well this subject has a lot of variety of info to learn and the authors make it harder than it has to be. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Essential Psychopharmacology for Depression - and More
This is a remarkable book - remarkable for its authority, its unusual learning friendliness inthe context of the recognized national reputation of the author. The information is presented both visually and by text, with the advice to "read the pictures and subtext" first and then review the book. The learning of a deep and compicated subject thus becomes pleasure.
5-0 out of 5 stars No wonder I'm not a brain doctor
Fabulous, interesting, understandably written, and highly technical, current information. As a long time member of the bipolar community, I constantly search for information that will help me to understand my disorder, express the causes and effects to other consumers and interested parties and to be more fully capable of being a proactive consumer with my medical professionals. The book is an easy read, can be put down when your brain is reaching max capacity and picked up like you never lost a beat.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Book for ALL People, not only Vets
Ed Tick's book is not for Vets alone...this powerful book is a must read for ALL of us. Even those of us who have not felt the direct impacts of war (especially in the U.S.) are affected by it; war is an archetypal energy that exists in history, in the now, and more personally, in us all. With Afghanistan, Iraq, and now Israel close on their heels, war is a painful reality we cannot ignore. And, this moment in our history is a golden opportunity to delve deep into the shadowy subject of war and its very real effects on a global and personal scale. That said, Ed's book brought this war/warrior energy home for me, both dark and light. He masterfully retells the stories of people you and I would know, in addition to painting a picture of the roots of war/warrior and opening a path of healing for Vets and non-Vets alike...for all human beings. After reading War and the Soul, I will always look at war differently, feel compassion for soldiers/warriors, and personally be more aware of the little and not so visible wars that we as human beings wage in ourselves and in our everyday lives. I also am more aware of the warrior in me. Awareness is power, and in this case, the power to fight as a warrior would for peace and healing. Thank you, Ed. This book touched my heart and brought tears that needed to be shed.

3-0 out of 5 stars Intense
I have not finished reading this book as it is very graphic and emotional. I might be worth 5 stars when I finish but I have to get away from it for a while and only read it in pieces.

5-0 out of 5 stars Growing Our Soul
Dr. Edward Tick's new book War and the Soul will have a tremendous impact on the treatment of PSTD. Before his ground breaking book, the treatment for PTSD was learning to cope with the symptoms and medication. For Tick healing involves growing the soul big enough to carry the traumatic wounds. He also brings PTSD beyond the individual to a national disorder. "We speak of the soul of a nation. Is PTSD our country's soul sickness?"

Developmental Psychopathology, 2nd Edition, Three Volume Set edited by Dante Cicchetti, Donald J. Cohen (Wiley) (available individually: Volume 1: Developmental Psychopathology, Theory and Method; Volume 2: Developmental Psychopathology, Developmental Neuroscience; Volume 3: Developmental Psychopathology, Risk, Disorder, and Adaptation) contains in three volumes the most complete and current research on every aspect of developmental psychopathology. This seminal reference work features contributions from international expert researchers and clinicians who bring together an array of interdisciplinary work to ascertain how multiple levels of analysis may influence individual differences, the continuity or discontinuity of patterns and the pathways by which the same developmental outcomes may be achieved.

4-0 out of 5 stars One of the best and most usable psychiatry texts
I agree with the other favorable reviews. The Lange series in general is amazing--affordable and complete at the same time.I was impressed with the detailed discussion of alternate theories of personality development, the possible etiologies of the mental illnesses, and the theories of drug action. Many psychiatric texts, including the very pricy "standards," tend to be written in a dogmatic, cookbook style. In contrast, the Lange book does not tryto shield the reader from the ambiguity and uncertainty that face anyone treating the mental disorders.5-0 out of 5 stars CAPTIVATING AND WELL-ARRANGED
From infancy to adolescence, it is hard to find any medium-sized book that described developmental psychiatry (and psychology) the way this 640-paged "Current Diagnosis & Treatment in Psychiatry" did.5-0 out of 5 stars Up-to-date , usefull , easy to read and cheap!!!
I'm a medical doctor in my country (Brazil)and I am a general practitioner with a large experience in treating people with psychiatric problems. When I was a medical student my coleagues of university indicated the current books series. At that time this books was very cheap and after read my first book , current medical diagnosis and treatment , I begin to acquire other books of current series.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Finally, a Bible for Evidenced Based Therapy
Nathan and Gorman have provided mental health practitioners with an essential reference. No practitioner of psychotherapy or psychiatric chemotherapy can afford not to buy this book (purchase price notwithstanding). This compendium reviews treatments for major psychological disorders and offers effect size estimates for the benefits of treatment (i.e., how much better off are people after treatment than if they got no treatment at all).In addition, the authors summarize the quality of the research on which their reviews are based. They not only examine psychologically based treatments, but also medication treatments for some disorders. All practitioners and consumers should read this.As a faculty member in a clinical psychology graduate training program, I recommended this book to my students as optional reading - and almost all of them bought it because they found it invaluable.I hope this authors will choose to update this book every ten years ago (it is very recent, so it needs no updating now).If they do, I have no doubt that Nathan and Gorman will come to be inextricably associated with this monumentally practical work, the way that Gray is associated with Anatomy.Kudos to the authors for giving us this essential reference.

5-0 out of 5 stars New Therapist highly recommends!
This is the 30th book I have read in my new field of psychology.I just finished my Masters in Counseling and state this book is so well written and in depth; it provides a review of many of the important aspects of my Masters Program; e.g. theories, diagnosis, therapy tools and techniques. While a wonderful book on Dissociative Identity Disorder, it is also a great resource for many aspects of therapy.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
The Dissociative Identity Disorder Sourcebook is a clear and concise source for those living with DID and an excellent source for the therapist as well as loved ones who live with someone with DID.As a person who lives with DID, I found the book very rewarding to me; validating, accurate, informative, instructive and nurturing.

5-0 out of 5 stars FANTASTIC!
This book was fantastic. It helped me realize that I wasn't the crazy one and that the toxic people in my life were there because of their own actions. The way they acted towards me and others wasn't my fault and it wasn't because of me.This is a great book to help anyone figure out who the toxic people are in their lives and it tells you how to handle them accordingly.Highly recommend.

5-0 out of 5 stars Avoiding the toxic
This book is one of the best books I've ever read. Not only is this book easy to read and understand, but it also provides good insight into the different types of personality disorders sometimes challenging the reader to examine his or herself. The author prepares us for what we may encounter in relationships, friendships, and even in the work place. We often face people who have toxic personalities and get sucked in, the book helps us to identify and break away. The book also tells us how toxic people don't know their toxic, often blaming you for problems never looking at themselves sometimes making you question your own sanity making the title perfect. I enjoyed the book and I believe at one point or another everyone should read it. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars If a hysteric patient is leaving you muddled..
This is the book to consult. rich, complex. and best savored in small, delicate bites, Bollas offers some insights about hysterics you simply won't find anywhere else. For example, he delineates the intricacies of exactly why the hysteric tries to find him-herself in the desire of the other. Bollas also explains why the hysteric eschews the physical and the sexual( the mother denied the infant's body). Further, Bollas makes such lucid sense of the hysteric's array of physical maladies. (She is offering her body to medical professionals to care for, attend, touch, and love, the way her mother never did.)5-0 out of 5 stars Wow!
Goodness! Reading this book, I can't help but wonder how we've gotten along without it for so long, or for as long as hysteria as a working clinical-theoretical construct has been banished from our vernacular.Bollas depicts with great creativity and clarity just what hysteria is, and gives us a working sense of how to differentiate it from other psychic structures, especially the borderline, with which it has most commonly been misunderstood.True to classical and object relations thinking, the author also extends our understanding of this most complex patient. His differential descriptions of various structures is done through not only what the patient struggles with, but also how both the transference and the countertransference vary.A must-read! for any psychotherapist serious about working the depths of our patients. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A Landmark Contribution
A landmark contribution by two seasoned experts in teaching children with autism--this book guides the reader through an in-depth understanding about the pivotal responses in the child's developmental trajectory in relationships with teachers, therapists and, most importantly the family in everyday life. The application of behavioral principles in natural settings brings the concepts alive and makes them useful to readers.
5-0 out of 5 stars Highly informative and very strongly recommended to all parents, teachers, and counselors of autistic children
Knowledgeably co-authored by Robert L. Koegel (Director of the Koegel Autism Center, University of California, Santa Barbara) and Lynn Kern Koegel (Director of Clinical Services at the Koegel Autism Center) Pivotal Response Treatments For Autism: Communication, Social, And Academic Development is an informed and informative study of the tactics and strategies employed to improve the learning and comprehensive cognitive understanding of autistic children. Exploring ways to improve children's academic performance, advance children's communication and language skills, foster social interactions and friendships with typically developing peers, reduce disruptive behaviors, aid early identification and intervention, and reduce ritualistic behaviors and broaden children's interests, Pivotal Response Treatments For Autism is highly informative and very strongly recommended to all parents, teachers, and counselors of autistic children.
5-0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive and Practical Treatment Guide
This book focuses on behavioral treatments for children with autism. As the subtitle suggests, it covers the three main areas that are challenging for children affected by autism - communication, social, and academic development. While it is written with autism in mind, the techniques are certainly applicable to the spectrum of Pervasive Developmental Disorders (PDDs). The techniques are rooted in Applied Behavioral Analysis (ABA) and are developmentally sensitive. The authors attempt to make the treatments practical and natural (i.e. reinforcers should be tailored to the child's natural environment). I found the section on academic development to be especially helpful. Several pictorial examples of homework were given, and how a parent might make the homework less intimidating (e.g. organizing information, chunking, giving hints, etc.) This book could be used by parents, professionals, and paraprofessionals. I used it in an educational setting, and have not actually tried any of the techniques. But I can say that the interventions are based on sound research, and I expect that they would be effective when applied properly. PRTs for Autism is a complete and accesible book. However, it is not necessarily a motivational book nor one that you would use for an evening of easy reading. It is basically a book that gives detailed treatment techniques. I think this is its strong suit, as I have seen other treatment books and planners that simply give general ideas on how to approach treatment. For a book that is more motivational while still having practical strategies, I recommend another book by one of the co-authors (Lynn Kern Koegel) called Overcoming Autism -- which is geared more specifically towards parents. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A Seminal Work
If you want to understand narrative psychology in a developmental framework here is where to start. It is not overly technical, which is actually a bit of a drawback for those of us who would like more background and theory. But, it is an excellent intruduction to the field, very readable, and many people cite McAdams in their subsequent reserach (which I certainly will be doing). ... Read more
