5-0 out of 5 stars Huge help to my daughter with OCD
My daughter (now 12) was diagnosed with Obsessive Compulsive disorder at age 9.Given that OCD is an anxiety-type disorder, and my daughter had always had fears and anxieties around certain things, I bought this book.We found it even more helpful than the OCD-specifcbooks.The etiology of anxiety and OCD are similar, and this book helps the child evoke the power of their own though process.By becoming the "boss" of their thoughts, they can reduce the power of their anxieties/obsessions.Basically, it takes the foundation of cognitive-behavior therapy and puts it into a kid-friendly context.Read the opening "Letter to Kids with Anxiety" to your kid. That's what I did, and she was hooked.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book
I can attest first-hand that the authors' methods of dealing with situational or specific anxiety in children works. My oldest son, now 14, had many fears, including thunderstorms and severe separation anxiety. We tried traditional "talk" therapy for many years with several different therapists, with no success. We finally found a cognitive therapist who was able to work with him with great success. My middle son has recently been in therapy with Elizabeth Spencer to handle anxiety about sleeping away from home, a problem he continued to have despite talk therapy with three different therapists.Elizabeth was able to get to the meat of my son's anxiety, help him understand why his brain was reacting the way it was, and what to do to overcome it.I'm please to report we had our last appointment today, and my son has had a summer of successful sleepovers and a week-long vacation, all without any anxiety.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must read for Parents helping their child deal with Anxiet
I have read many books on anxiety as I have a 12 year old who has suffered with Anxiety for years. This book was by far the most useful, and well thought out. It gives you detailed information on what causes anxiety. It also gives you lots of infomation on the different solutions: When to seek professional help, what different medicines do. It includes specific tips to help your child. The use of the Dragon (Your Anxieties) and the Wizard (the smart guy that can help you overcome them)helped explain in my son's terms the feelings he as been having. Its like the light bulb went off for him. The journal keeping has been a huge help to him as he tackles his dragon. This book is a must have for parents of children suffering from Anxiety. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Hartmann and Drugs
Hartmann is a successful multitasker: not only does he write popular books on ADD/ADHD, he has published numerous books of poetry, has opened four hospitals in Third World countries, and so on. His point is that ADD/ADHD is a curse if it is not channeled properly, but can be a great blessing, and an enormous goad (and even key) to success if the "sufferer" learns to handle it, learns to cope with it.
5-0 out of 5 stars Best book I've read on the subject!
This is the first product I've ever written a review about--that should tell you something!
5-0 out of 5 stars I Owe This to the Author
Your reviewers experience: a few short years ago my youngest son was in real trouble. Skipping school and failing I had him tested at his therapist's request. Near genius IQ. In eight grade his math aptitude (which he failed through most of school) was above 12th grade. He was miserable and so was our family. In search of answers he was diagnosed as ADD. It was a dark dark time for me to the point I believed I might lose this child.

5-0 out of 5 stars Pretty Good
This book is fantastic! It really explains why some people end up with personality disorders and how to go about having a person see their dysfunctional patterns. The book is well structured with good outlines of the various schemata. However, after about page 70, it gets a bit repetitive. The case illustrations are helpful, though I couldn't help noticing how neatly well packaged they were. Schema therapy definitely provides an excellent framework within which to conceptualize personality disorders.Apparently it is more helpful to borderline personality disorder than psychodynamic therapy. So,in summary, while I really appreciated how personality disorders were conceptualized, I found the book a bit repetitive... For a more 'academic' approach, you might want to try the Handbook of Personality Disorders.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Schema TherapyBible
This highly professional yet clearly articulated book covers the history, concepts, and techniques of Schema Therapy. While this therapeutic approach originated in cognitive therapy, it has evolved into a systematic ecclecticism that includes cognitive, behavioral, experiential, and other useful techniques for identifying and healing schemas, modes, coping patterns, etc.Highly recommended for the professional with an interest in helping clients alter personality disorders and other disturbances that are resistant to other therapeutic approaches.Fred P. Gallo, PhD, author of "Energy Psychology" and co-author of "The Neurophysics of Human Behavior"

5-0 out of 5 stars Thought provoking development in integrative therapy
As a psychodynamically trained therapist, I have sensed for many years that a 'pure' approach to therapy has severe limitations. This led me to get further training in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy and to use this with my clients - to some good effect. However, I felt uncomfortable using this 'either, or' approach to therapy (either psychodynamic OR CBT) and have been trying for a long time to work out a way of integrating these two approaches in my practice.

5-0 out of 5 stars The body does bear the burden
When a thoughtful individual takes the time to summarize 30 years of experience, I view this as a great gift. When his insights allow us to help in treatment, it is a blessing. His major thesis is that trauma, when it produces a chronic stress disorder, can manifest in peculair physical ways. This is the key insight and Dr. Scaer backs his observations with lots of clinical and research data. No doubt some will find this a rigorous read, but it is well worth the effort. I had the opportunity to try this theory. A teacher in a rough part of town ( I live in NYC) witnessed in his class a fight where a student viciously punched a girl in the head, when the teacher interevened, the next blow was to the back of his head sending him into the chalk board and breaking his glasses. He presented 5 days later with classic post concussion syndrome of impaired memory, inablility to read and other congnitve deficits. Before I read Dr. Scaer's book, I would have have not been able to treat him, for, from a medical point of view, it was all the brain banging aroung in his skull that caused this. However, Dr. Scaer made me think that this was instead a PTSD from having witnessed a vicious attack. I treated him with EFT and remarkably two days later he was normal! (This would have usually taken many weeks). We are all searching for ways to treat PTSD, but at least we can now view some mystifying symptoms in a model for which hopefully soon we will be able to fix. Kudos, Dr. Scaer.

2-0 out of 5 stars Remember That College Textbook You Just Hated?
I started out as a lit major, then switched to linguistics.I worked three years as a medical transcriptionist.I've never had trouble reading anything. But this book is so full of fourteen-letter words, acronyms, and other jargon, it's just plain unpleasant to read.
5-0 out of 5 stars No stress here

Editorial Review

What makes people kill? Specifically, what are the motivations behind serial, mass, and spree killings? Drawing from cases such as the mass murder in Dunblane, Scotland, in which a lone gunman mowed down 16 children and their teacher, the still-unsolved Tylenol poisonings, and the Unabomber, former FBI profiler John Douglas and coauthor Mark Olshaker try to explain the unthinkable. 3-0 out of 5 stars Inside Smoldering Minds
This is an engrossing book that was ahead of its time in presenting the often seamy, often searching field of forensic science. Douglas brings us onto the crime scene, and gives us a view through the eyes of profilers, pathologists, analyzers, and detectives.
4-0 out of 5 stars A trip to a very dark place
When it comes to bringing serial crime psychology and profiling to a level that a layperson can understand, Douglas is peerless. He identifies several different types of serial killers and includes true-life stories of a few he's dealt with in his decades with the FBI's Behavioral Science Unit. It's an engrossing, easily understandable and fascinating read.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not as riveting as I expected
When I saw this book in a used book store, I thought the title was "Anatomy of Murder". Only later did I see that it was "Motive". Based on Douglas' other books about serial killers, I expected this book to deal strictly with serial killers. And it did not.

1-0 out of 5 stars Dangerous, unscientic garbage
This book is based on outmoded, unsupported ideas that ignore the last 20 years of developments in neuroscience and psychology.
5-0 out of 5 stars great information for everyone
Being BPD myself I found this book revealing so many things, which I felt, yet could not place. I also find it a very good book for non BPD's as it considers both sides and it not a manual for borderline "bystanders" as 'Walking on eggshells" is.
4-0 out of 5 stars Best with Seasoning
This is a very skillfully constructed resource tool for achieving a positive life spin with those afflicted with personality disorders. There is a bit of textbookish quality so it is more palatable if read in combination with other, less point by point texts. I strongly recommend "The Wizard of Oz and Other Narcissist", "Sickened", and "My Fractured Life" as books that will flush out the whole picture with a bit of spice. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Valuable book for your psyche library
I highly recommend this textbook as a keepsake in your Pysch. library. As an undergrad, we used this text in Personality and Psychopathology. As a grad student of Social Work, I have still referred back to this text book. Very comprehensive and formatted perfectly.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best psych texts ever!!
As a college student, I appreciated the quality of the material contained in this book and the clarity of it. No sitting with a dictionary to try and read a textbook. The layout of the book was wonderful as well as the descriptive manner it was written in, the pictures that accentuated the points delivered by the text. All around, an awesome text!

5-0 out of 5 stars Able to keep reader awake even as a textbook!
As an undergrad currently grappling with an Abnormal Psychology class, I find this book both instructional and interesting. Its many colorful graphs and charts help illustrate points and most importantly, the writing styleused is engaging and comprehensive -- fantastic for helping keep the readerawake! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars An interesting and useful read
I found this book very interesting and useful from many different perspectives.
1-0 out of 5 stars Stop-- This is a "must not" read.
You really need to be careful when reading this book.Understandingly, people facing the challenges of ADD/ADHD are stressed out and overly receptive to a voice like Hartmann's.Strangely unprofessional, Hartmann offers a "soft ball" lob to those looking for a feel good camp-fire-like discussion of the challenges of ADD/ADHD.This is not a productive way to approach these challenges.Overcoming these challenges takes discipline, a manner of thinking totally absent in Harmann's writing.I would go so far as to say that the author's writing style, the manner in which he presents his ideas, and the thinking behind those ideas represents the worst, rather than the most optimal aspects, of traits associated with ADD. Beware.

5-0 out of 5 stars Don't have a cue what to do!!!Read the book!
Thom Hartmann has written a series of books related to ADD/ADHD.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very good book for Understanding PTSD
This is the first book I attempted to read after being diagnosed with PTSD. It helped me understand my unexplainable behavior and symtoms and helped me come to terms that I was not "crazy, as perceived, but simply having a normal reaction to an abnormal trauma. I would love to meet the author sometime. I HIGHLY recommenend this book.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good, but not great
I liked a lot of the insight this book had to offer. I don't like the promise that the reader can diagnose themselves by answering a few questions. A person doesn't need a diagnosis to know what they are going through, and they should not be diagnosing themselves anyway- for obvious reasons.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good book, but the POST TSD SOURCEBOOK BY GLEN SCHRALDI
IS MUCH BEETER. This book discusses what PTSD is, but not how to treat it like the (PTSD) sourcebook does. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Hard to read
This book is very hard to read. There are citations throughout the text, and the information is not divided into many sections. The text is small, there are no graphics, key words or chapter summaries. Its a lot of valuable infomation, if you can keep your eyes open long enough to read it.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent, but advanced text
I use this text for my graduate class in child behavior disorders. I also used the first edition. In terms of level, it falls at the very top of the spectrum. It is by far the most complete and rigorously empirical text available.Discussion is sophisticated and thorough. In fact, it is almost possible to use this text without primary source supplements.

5-0 out of 5 stars Oh my Goodness---
This is written clearly for the layperson who may find themselves involved with a "self-centered" person.
5-0 out of 5 stars Better than reading a "how-to give up" book.
I read Malignant Self Love as it is a wonderful book that gives alot of insight on narcissism. But as science is narcissistic itself. It believes in acting on behalf of one's self. In other words, if you're not satisfied with your parther's faults then by all means, give up(at least until science finds and answer).
5-0 out of 5 stars This is why you should...
I agree wholeheartidly with the reviewer who asked Why would you try to have a relationship with a person who is narcistic, they are completely devoid of empathy. (etc). Indeed, if you even suspect that your potential partner is narcisitic, run for your life! However, if your situation is similar to mine, this book is a godsend. I married at a very young age my first boyfriend, when I got pregnant after just a couple months of dating. He had a reputation of being a "communist swine", but I thought he was just misunderstood. (...) Being very young (=stupid) and being able to get along with all kinds of people, I underestimated what marriage ment. His abusive behaviour, present from the very start of the relationship, kept getting worse, especially when he felt his most prized posesion, ie his trophy wife, was too independent or withdrawn. (I was avoiding him as much as I could.) During the last 8 years of marriage, about once a month he initiated confrontations where he used both emotional manipulation and physical intimidation (either holding me against my will or pushing me with his stomach into the corner of the kitchen). I am not sure if anyone who did not experience a 6'3", 300 lbs closing in on her 125pounds can understand how unsetlling such an act is. Anyway, after these periodic confrontations, I always became moderately to severely depressed and it took me weeks to climb out of the hole. The marriage lasted 16 years. All that time, I thougth I was failing at something, and the fact that I could not get through to him was a source of frustration and helplessness, if not despere.

5-0 out of 5 stars Review of On-scene guide for crisis negotiators
Good 1st book to read on those wanting to be Negotiators in the Law Enforcement field.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Worthy Addition To The Field
Frederick Lanceley's "On-Scene Guide for Crisis Negotiators" is a long needed compendium of technique and definition in the field of crisis negotitations. Mr. Lanceley's vast experience has enabled him to providetechniques based on real-life situations not just theory. The volume isarranged in a concise, easy-to-reference format which should be a part ofevery negotiator's "Ready Kit". One of the most important pointsabout this book is the fact that it addresses the types of situations faceddaily by police negotiators. Suicide intervention, long a subject ignoredin many negotiations seminars, is given in-depth treatment. In addition, the entire book is an interesting read. His account of his involvement atRuby Ridge is fascinating. I would recommend this book to anyone involvedin the field, police commanders and anyone interested in crisisintervention.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fascinating!
An enlightening book on a subject that has needed Illumination. This book covers the many forms and facets of DPD as well as the many ways it has been described, defined and managed. It covers therapies and medicines that have helped and those that have not. The case studies are fascinating and show just how varied this disorder manifests itself. It is so well written that it seemed every question and skeptic querie that came to mind regarding the cases were anticipated by the authors and answered by the end of the chapers. An easy read on a tough subject!

5-0 out of 5 stars I've been waiting for this book my entire life!
I first experienced depersonalization and derealization around age 4 or 5. It wasn't frightening then; it was simply a "game of existential thinking" I had control of. But as the years progressed it became a debilitating altered state of consciousness that took over my life. I have had both symptoms "DP" and "DR" -- 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, even in my dreams -- for over thirty years. This altered state has stolen my goals and dreams; it has severely affected my social and occupational pursuits.

1-0 out of 5 stars Smelling Like Roses - Or Not
Levenkron approaches every patient he ever had with stern directness. While it's nice to have a no-nonsense attitude, he only includes patients with whom he's had success so that he comes out smelling like roses.
5-0 out of 5 stars Cutting
I found this book right on about reasons for cutting and great insights into why, when, etc. adults cut themsleves. It is non-judgemental and is great for cutters and therapists and loved-ones to read if they really want to understand. It was the first time I ever felt like I wasn't totally alone with this horrible secret and the first time I felt like someone understood and wasn't judging me for it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book packed with great information
After reading reviews that said Steven Levenkron was "arrogant," I had doubts about buying this book. However, I didn't find him arrogant at all - rather, he was calm, clear, concise, and very knowledgable on the subject. The book is rich with case studies, which I found very helpful to use as examples, as well as interesting on their own. Being a former cutter myself, I think he hit the nail right on the head when he described the reasons people cut, why people can't stop, and why it is so difficult to open up about it. Levenkron emphasizes that cutting is not a disease in itself: rather, it is a symptom of something larger, and that "something" must be addressed in order for the patient to be cured. Cutting is not necessarily a symptom of Borderline Personality Disorder, as was previously believed. It can coincide with an eating disorder, depression, anxiety, trauma, etc.
