5-0 out of 5 stars One of the most incredible stories
This book, among other books on MPD I have read, is probably the most interesting case. It really makes you think and appreciate what you have today.
4-0 out of 5 stars it is a captivating work...
Although Schreiber switches from Sybil's childhood to adulthood frequently in the novel, she still manages to capture the reader's attention and also, she lets the reader to further understand her situation.
5-0 out of 5 stars The book that endures
Ive read Sybil when i was 13,and it took me just a day to finish it. The moment i placed the book down, i started researching on split and multiple personality--Freud and the like.

5-0 out of 5 stars You need not be Dummies to benefit from this book
Finally! A book that gives a clear overview of pretty much every aspect related to autism spectrum disorder: from "classic autism" to Asperger Syndrome and High Functioning Autism. It covers diagnosis, medical and biochemical interventions, sensory issues, learning environments, education, social skills and relationships from pre-school through adulthood. And much more! How can one book address so many topics on one book? Even I'm dumbfounded it can be done...and I guess that's the point. It's Autism for Dummies, which means it gives the briefest most concise explanation. It is written in a clear and understandable manner than ANYONE can simply pick it up, scan through it and get a good handle on what autism is. This is an excellent reference book that every school and parent should have in their library to quickly thumb through for a quick explanation. I, as a parent of three children with ASD, have purchased SEVEN copies (so far!); one for myself to use a continual quick reference book, and 6 others for the professionals who work with my kids.
5-0 out of 5 stars A very complete and helpful guide...
Over the past three years since we began to suspect my grandson was autistic, I have accumulated a large library on the subject. Many of the books covered or advocated specific types of treatment, or information on school special education, or finances and autism, or possible causes, or personal success stories or even stories of acceptance when success didn't happen. This book covers them all, and more, and does it well.I'm getting another copy for my son and daughter-in-law, although by now they are experts, not dummies.. This is a really EXCELLENT contribution to the available literature on this increasingly common developmental condition.Don't miss it! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Some important clarifications
First of all, don't get discouraged by the negative reviews because some of them (maybe most of them!) are clearly scientologist reviews. Scientologists believe that psychiatrists are behind the rise of Hitler, not to mention other interesting stuff such as, that Xenu, the galatic overlord, was helped by psychiatrists; this is actualy true, so...

3-0 out of 5 stars Very psycho educational book
I find this book very useful in understanding binge eating disorder. I think its very user - reader friendly and use is very often in therapy.

5-0 out of 5 stars Anatomy of a Food Addiction
If you want to understand why your eating habits are out of control, this is the book which explains it!This book has really helped me to understand why I am so addicted to sugar and flour, and explains how one needs to abstain from these foods.I still have to rely on O.A. in order to keep the motivation to eat properly, but I come back to this book on a regular basis to keep my mind focused on why I keep returning to bad eating habits and how I am not to blame.GREAT BOOK.

5-0 out of 5 stars Lifesaving Information!
Ironically, it was a negative comment written by another reviewer that told me this was the book for me!They had mentioned the author's prescription of abstinence from sugar and white flour products to stop the carvings. You see, I know firsthand that this is a necessary and extremely effective step in combating food cravings and the binges that characterize a food addiction. (By the way this is not an "Atkins like" diet in any way, shape or form - you are still allowed heatlhy whole grains, fruits etc.)I just didn't know WHY it worked for me.For more than a year, I abstained from eating white flour products, fruits and sugars due to actual food allergies and as a wonderful side effect, all of my cravings for and obsessive thoughts about these foods ceased completely.I was no longer driven to or dependent on food. However, because I wasn't aware of why I had been so dependent on food in the past, I allowed myself to have a slice of cake on my birthday which turned out to be a huge mistake.Bam!I was right back in and I haven't been able to abstain ever since. After reading this book, I uncovered the other more important and insidious reason for my inability to regain abstinence - namely, the emotional issues that drive me to food. This aspect of the book, is the most important of all. This book feels like it was written for me.I've had every thought, every feelingDr. Katherine relates. Her writing exposes my inner life, a life I thought was mine alone but in reality most, if not all, overeaters share the same experiences!Do yourself, your body, your soul a favor and buy this book! Thank you Anne Katherine! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A book about me
Sexual anorexia
5-0 out of 5 stars Finally a deeper perspective
After having tried different kinds of books and therapy which mainly is focusing on the technical aspects of sex with little success or progress, I feel that this book really goes behind the technical and offers a more complete explanation as to why some people have a difficult relationship with sex.
4-0 out of 5 stars Empathetic and brave
This book has been very useful to me. It's written with a good deal of compassion and insight, and even though I think the authors oversimplify some issues, they manage to get near the heart of what makes sex so difficult for many people. The recommended activities are generally weak and none too useful, but that's true of most self-help books. Even the good ones. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best introductions to this disorder and how it is treated
This is one of the best introductions to borderline personality that I know of. It is thorough and does a great job of explaining how the disease works in layman's terms. It also illustrates all the important aspects with excellent short examples.
5-0 out of 5 stars Highly Recommended
I read this book and I saw myself. If you suspect that you're a little flipped, check this book out.

5-0 out of 5 stars Approachable and Engaging
I've read more academic books (and think those are important, too. For that, I recommend "Demystifying Borderline Personality Disorder"), but this one was accessible and engaging, and had useful and practical advice for people with the illness and those around them. Because of that, the book gives the reader a sense of hope. In this field, that can be rare. There is some sexual content, and I can understand why some people would find that offensive. I personally didn't. Any misgivings I have about the book are offset by my enthusiasm about its readability and its usefulness to the people for whom it is written: borderlines and their families. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Bedrock Concepts for the Millennial Therapist
Beck's and Freeman's marriage of value and belief systems to personality theory was nothing less than a watershed back in 1990. Kernberg, Millon, Hare, Linehan, Shapiro and other personality theorists of the period were already moving in the direction of what became Millon's "personality-guided synergistic therapy." But this book gave substance to what has become the dominant set of front-line therapeutic tools in use at this time.
5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic
This is a great book. For example, the chapters on obsessive compulsive and passive agressive personality give some great direction for therapy.Knowing that an obsessive person fears making mistakes, that narcissism is part of obsessionality and that a passive agressive person fears loss of autonomy can really guide treatment well.
5-0 out of 5 stars Very practical, directive strategy
Beck has done a great job describing a very pragmatic, common sense cognitive-behavioral methodology for the treatment of challenging personalities. The research he has done builds confidence in practitioners interested in and using these methods. Each personality style is well-described, and several strategies are provided for addressing these problematic dispositions. The book is very well-organized and easy to read. Assignments and case examples further add to the utility of this text. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A true "How To" very practically written
I've yet to finish reading it (procrastination is one of my bad behaviors :) but about 3/4 through I can't say enough about this book.Too many books give you fluff, whereas this is a good blend of real life illustrative stories from their patients, along with what I really wanted... practical how-to steps along with a thorough description of how & why we learn and practice the behaviors we so abhor in ourselves.I already knew I was "choosing" my bad behaviors, but hadn't found anything that described why I was making such bad choices, and how to stop. This is none of that self hypnosis mumbo jumbo, but real suggestions on how to identify what you are doing and why, and then to catch yourself, and methodically replace bad behaviors with good ones.

5-0 out of 5 stars a great eye opener!
The first half of the book is all you need to read inorder to figure out your self-defeating behaviors to come to light and systematically changing them so you can make the right choices to be happy, purposeful, and meaningful in all aspects of your life. The second half of the book felt like it was repeating the first half. overall a great eye opener on human behaviors and why we constantly limit ourselves with the wrong choices to be in the "in crowd" and not listening to our inner self. I have definitely gained a measure of power in making the right choices. i do recommend reading it at least a couple of times to fully understand the principles.

5-0 out of 5 stars "We Do What We Have to Do"
The uncanny knack of these authors to address the "foregone conclusions" that everyone, even organizations and governments face, as well as individuals, as they process the mission and objectives that motivate them offers a new avenue of change - for both undesirable habits and desires, but also for those we rarely think about within this context, like sex, like racism, like self defense mechanisms, etc., and other "impressions" of expectations rooted in concrete memories.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book
This book was recommended to me by my son's Doctor. It is very detailed and informative. It is a great choice to learn more about ADHD. I highly recommend it.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Complete and Solid Parents' Guide
As a fully licensed clinical psychologist and the author of Parenting Kids with ADD/ADHD: Real Tools for Real Life I feel uniquely qualified to say that Dr. Barkley's book is the MOST complete ADHD-related parenting book in print today. It offers a complete review of the scientific literature related to ADHD, and describes scientifically supported treatments. This volume could be improved by being more user friendly, and somewhat less dense (goals I attempted to meet in my own volume mentioned above).
3-0 out of 5 stars Useful, thought provoking, but utterly cold and empathy-free

5-0 out of 5 stars Nails it ...
God bless for Martha Stout for writing this amazing book.If you have ever encountered someone who defies explanation, who you just feel uncomfortable around, who you don't trust, you must read this book.Someone has finally revealed in a most readable manner true sociopathic behavior and how it can exist without being called to task for the horrendous damage it can do.I truly think this book should be on the bestseller list, just so it reaches more people. It gives a voice to everyone who has been affected by sociopathic behavior whether they have realized what it was or not.Thank you Martha Stout for writing this fascinating book.Your courage is deeply appreciated.

5-0 out of 5 stars A MUST read!!
You just never know who you are dealing with!I do believe that this book is imperative reading for any human-being who cares about their psychological health and the health of their friends and family.

3-0 out of 5 stars Read With Caution: Misrepresents Our Armed Forces
The Sociopath Next Door by Martha Stout (2005), in the main, is on the mark. It is clear, straightforward, and the examples are easy to follow. But, I take strong exception to the impression Dr. Stout leaves that the soldier in general and special operations professionals (snipers, undercover operatives, hand-to-hand specialists), in particular, are sociopaths. She says: "To some extent, we can think of sociopaths as being shaped and maintained by society because nations so often require cold-blooded killers, from anonymous foot soldiers. . . Sociopaths are fearless and superior warriors. . .(Stout 2005:139).

If you know someone who reads Ann Coulter or Neanderthals like that, get this book; you may be able to help them. If all else fails, you can at least hit them with the book.

5-0 out of 5 stars One Of The Best Books About Psychopathy
This is a classic. A must read. Although pricey, this book will be indispensable to both the student and student of life. I found it fascinating and very in-depth. I study psychopathy, so this book came in very handy when completing a website, along with Meloy's other work, "Violent Attachments."

5-0 out of 5 stars Not quite the Psychopathy Bible...but almost
J. Reid Meloy's book provides a fascinating insight into the mind of the psychopath and is perhaps one of the most comprehension books on psychopathy since Hervey Cleckley's masterpiece, "The Mask of Sanity".This book is divided into four sections that discuss originsand previous theories, the psychopath's experience of emotion, theimportance of aggression in the psychopathic mind, and treatment plans forpsychopathy. While the first two sections on previous theories andpsychopathic emotion are difficult to read because of the technicalvocabulary terms, they still provide key information concerning thecreation and signiture traits of a psychopathic individual. The readingbecomes easier once Meloy starts to discuss certain case studies and thetreatments he has used and studyied. The increased readibility does notmean that this book loses value for a clinician. On the contrary, Ibelieve that this is a book that all individuals who are interested inunderstanding and identifying the psychopath, clinicians and lay personsalike, should read.Meloy's book is mainly from a forensic perspective andtherefore almost all of his case studies involve criminal psychopaths.Oneimportant distinction not made clear in this book is that not allpsychopaths are criminals. However, this distinction is not severelydetrimental to the quality of the book, and it is still an excellent andvery comprehensive source on this disturbing, yet interesting mentaldisorder. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Brainy and well worth it
This is a scholarly collection of essays from leading theorists in the field of attachment and neurobiology. It provides an exciting, in-depth overview from various perspectives from the inner workings of the brain, to the development of the social mind, to what it all mean for clinicians. There is both theory and practical advice. The last several chapters are particularly relevant to psychotherapists in the field working with individuals with trauma. The down side of the book is that some of the early chapters are somewhat rhedundant and heady, necessarily so in the science presented, but definately overlapping. However, I'd strongly recommend it for all clinicians wanting to stay abreast of the exciting developments in this area. I use it in supervision groups I lead for therapists, for example.
5-0 out of 5 stars Traumas as Social Interactions

5-0 out of 5 stars Really Love This Book!!
Don't let the size fool you.If you have been diagnosed with DID, then this little book of 109 pages is what you need.It doesn't go into the hows and whys of DID, the DID Source Book is great for that. What "Got Parts?" gives you is a day to day manual for getting through life with DID.I carry it in my backpack where ever I go. There are times that DID just gets me down, so I pick up the book, thumb easily to the section I want, take a minute to read about what I need to do, then I remember and do it.Another great thing about this book is that it is written by someone who has DID, who lives and fights in the trenches of DID.This brings authenticity to the book.It also has an index and is easy to locate the subject you are looking for. The writing style of the author is very easy going and she doesn't ever break into stories of her past. There is a page, however in the very back entitled, "About the Author" who remains unidentified.Even then she never talks about the details of her abuse. It's just plain good advice from someone who knows.I have several DID books, but this one is my favorite when I just need to get through the day. When I have moments of feeling crazy, I open the book. When I feel overwhelmed with emotion, I open this book.It helps me to clear my thinking and gives me immediate direction. In short, I really love this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing!
When I first got this book, I was a bit ticked that I paid thirteen dollars for a book that was only around a hundred pages. But once I read it, I knew it was well worth the money. Every sentance is informative. It confronts many daily aspects of life that are affected when one has DID and how to overcome that. Its not full of psycho-mumbo-jumbo but how to handle everyday thigns like taking medicine, raising the kids, sexual activity, work, and respect among the alters. It is truly an owners manual for those with DID. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A new way of thinking about anxiety
When the author said we give ourselves two impossible choices by telling ourselves we can't stay because of our fear and panic, yet we can't leave because of the failure and humiliation, she really hit it on the nail for me. Giving myself two possible choices - it's okay to stay, and it's okay to leave - opened up a new reality for me. I never told myself before I read this book that it's okay if I leave a panicked situation. I always beat myself on the head and feared it meant I could never go back. I didn't realize how harshly I was treating myself until I saw another possibility, the "B-Talk," which is about accepting myself, giving myself options, and seeing anxiety from a new way. This book really is a life changer.

5-0 out of 5 stars Like a cure for agoraphobia!
I was homebound from 19 to 22 with agoraphobia. With counseling, Paxil, and the tools in this book I was able to go from being afraid of my own shadow to attending a 48,000-student University 1000 miles away from home by myself. I no longer have agoraphobia symptoms whatsoever and still keep a copy of this book around to read just in case I ever feel the fear again.

3-0 out of 5 stars a real missed opportunity
This book is, at best, mediocre and I agree with the reviewer who said it costs too much.A well-written, well-chosen, well-edited series of essays on overshopping would have been worth the price. Not this relatively simplistic analysis.
