4-0 out of 5 stars Habit Forming
Winning Habits wraps the 4 habits it talks about in a parable. The good news is the parable is easy to follow and helps to gets the habits across.Better yet the author provides suggestions in the parable for introducing these habits into you daily routie so they stick and take root.
5-0 out of 5 stars Good book, interesting and entertaining approach
It never ceases to amaze me how the best teachers and philosophers can take a tremendous amount of wisdom and distill it into a compact sentence or two so it is easily remembered. In "Winning Habits" author Dick Lyles has done an excellent job of doing exactly that.A whole philosophy of life is distilled down into just four sentences which, when they become habits, will propel you forward in life no matter what your goals.5-0 out of 5 stars These habits changed my life
This book was by far the best book I've read in the past ten years.I read a lot of books and some make a difference in my life and some don't.No other book has had as much impact on my life as WINNING HABITS.It reminded me to get back to some very basic principles I thought I had outgrown, and taught me a few new secrets as well.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars It Has Worked So Far....
While I am only a high school Sophmore, and I don't have a *real* job, this book has been very helpful in deciding what to shoot for doing. I've heard people call this book too vague, but they can't tell you exactly what to do; it doesn't work that way. Once you get through the personality quiz portion, the author gives a somewhat detailed description of your specific personality type (I for example am and ENFP) and throws in suggestions in the description and also give a modest list of other possibilities. I'll admit it was a bit vauger than I had hoped but it gives you plenty of room to move around and a great place to start.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book
This book has helped me choose a drastic career change I was almost afraid to reach for ten years ago.Since then, I've bought the book numerous times as gifts for friends who then share it with others. It's simple to use and relevant each time I go back to it.Whether you are looking for a career change or to better understand how to position yourself where you are, this book is extremely helpful in helping you realize your strengths and weaknesses, likes and dislikes more clearly and based on that, how to find a fit in almost every situation. The author's other books are insightful too for relationships and advising your children.

2-0 out of 5 stars Perhaps I had overly high expectations...
While I am aware that no career book is going to be a holy grail, this one in particular seemed rather useless. "You are an INFP. You feel fulfilled by helping people, so go find a job where you can do that" was pretty much the extent of the advice it offered. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars not very much help
Although this book had a bit of useful information, I did not appreciate the MULTIPLE vague references to "magic dust" and the author's personal stories.I also did not appreciate the many suggestions as to how to appear sexy, or to attract a mate.I am a married, working mother, and would NOT sleep in my husband's previously worn dress shirts as pajamas as she suggests.(My kids would look at me funny.)5-0 out of 5 stars Read if you want to look FANTASTIC instead of looking good!!
I must say, I can't understand any of the negative reviews. This book is so vital to looking your very, very best.I have read it 2 or 3 times now and I use the tips/principles outlined in the book to go shopping.2-0 out of 5 stars A book about color & clothing, with no color or illustration
First off, I'm not a career counselor, wardrobe stylist or even an artist. I tend to just throw stuff on in the morning for work (fortunately I have a job that doesn't require a "corporate suit" look). I ended up picking up this book mostly because there were some handy tips -- things like what length skirt goes with what type of shoes, etc. that I thought I could use.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Even more relevant today
I'm sorry to see that this book is out of print, because it's even more pertinent today than when it was first written. The author describes the problem of "burnout" common in people in the helping professions, and points out that its causes come from the work environment rather than the individual. This is in contrast to most other studies of burnout, which view it as strictly the individual's problem and thus something to be treated on the individual level. She identifies the institutional problems that can lead to burnout -- e.g., excessive workloads and lack of control -- and offers suggestions on how to improve the work environment. In the era of "managed care," underfunded schools, and lack of support (financial and emotional) for people in the helping professions, her advice is more important than ever. Her 1997 book is excellent, but it focuses more on corporations, while I think the helping professions still have the worst problems with burnout. The writing in this book is more heavily "academic," but it's a thorough and believable study, and still very much worth reading. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars HAS THE POTENTIAL OF OFFERING YOU PROFOUND PERSONAL GROWTH.
Branden shines a bright light on how critical self-esteem is to individual health, happiness and success in the workplace. Using a highly accessible writing style, he examines the nature and role of self-esteem, with specialemphasis on its link to effective leadership. Managers will find enormousvalue in these pages. Branden's examination of the high self-esteem leaderand high self-esteem management is as penetrating as it is clearly andtersely expressed. 5-0 out of 5 stars The essential thinking to what really drives business succes
At last, this brief book is an accessable look into what really drives success in business. Branden's work gets to the core of what motivates human beings, what we need from the work experience, how to get it, and howto foster it in others. One could easily throw out every other "how toachieve success at work" or "how to lead" book publishedover the past 20 years in favor of the wisdom just dripping from the pagesof this one. It is perfect for everyone who works, but especially valuablefor anyone who manages, and absolutely essential for anyone who leads.Business leaders are often put off by anything psychologically oriented infavor of management fads dressed in the more quantifiable language ofbusiness school affiliated consultants. Yet, we discard one such fad afterthe other when the promised results fail to materialize. All the while, thereal answers have been right under our noses in all of Branden's previousbooks. Finally, under the branding umbrella of leadership guru WarrenBennis, Branden and Josey-Bass publishers have wisely repackaged Branden'stechnologies (developed over nearly 40 years) specifically for the businessaudience. Because this book is brief, it is a great starting point fortime-pressured executives. Take it on the plane! Then, use it as a way intoBranden's more detailed works for the fuller course: "The Six Pillarsof Self-Esteem"; and "Taking Responsibility," for starters.

5-0 out of 5 stars Branden has the answer to business success.
British philosopher Colin Wilson calls Nathaniel Branden the foremostpsychologist of our age and this wonderful book confirms that evaluation. Branden explains the driving force behind all business innovation andproductivity and then gives you a practical process to build your ownself-esteem at work. This book should be required reading for anyone in abusiness that has two or more people in it. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Where's the Beef?
You have to wade through this monstrosity of a book to get to the gems.I found myself skipping paragraphs through mumble jumble before I could get to the meat of the book. There are other books out there that will give you food for thought without a lot of new age catch phrases and self important pondering.Greg Levoy's Callings or Barbara Winter's Making a LIving Without a Job are more concise and informative choices. You don't want to spend your time reading--you want to spend your time doing!

1-0 out of 5 stars Wordy and scattered
There are many books out there on Finding work that you love. If you really want to discover what you want to do and start an action plan to acheive your dreams, Iwould instead recommend Making a Living Without a Job by Barbara Winter or anything by Barbara Sher.Nick's book will keep you busy reading, not achieving.

3-0 out of 5 stars Let your soul guide you....
Nick's passion for his subject certainly comes through in this book, but I cannot escape the feeling that it was written over quite a period of time. Initially his thinking starts out as practical and is based on what I'd call 'popular psychology', and most readers will readily understand and identify with the 'truths' of the earlier chapters. Increasingly Nick seems to grow in his own spiritual confidence, and taking great care not to upset the sensitivities of any specific religious doctrine his connection with the less spiritually inclined reader falters. Anecdotal support from many named friends does little to convince me of the truth of the experiences and a frequent tendency to delve into the etymology of words becomes a tad irritating. The exercises suggested by Nick certainly help crystalise the reader's thinking on particular topics, but could not dispel the ambiguity I felt about some of Nick's ideas. There is no doubt that this book is about the path of a very personal journey that Nick has been on. Whether or not one is able to join him there in total trust and faith will differ for each of us. But we can only be better in many ways for having stayed the course. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Nice book but...

5-0 out of 5 stars A MASTERFUL BOOK ON LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT!
At the outset, Avolio asserts that leadership is both made and born; a person's beliefs about leadership can, however, become self-fulfilling and self-limiting. Learning and leading must go hand in hand for a person to achieve his/her full leadership potential. Thankfully, this author believes that the development of authentic leadership is more profound than a listing of do's and don'ts; he is true to his ambition. In each chapter Avolio discusses one main concept that makes up an overall model of leadership development with the aim of conveying a new model for the reader. The context of the model is each person's life stream-events that shape their views, used to lead others. The key elements are 1) a person's self and possible self (perspective of self), 2) perspective of others, 3) using feedback to adjust behavior, 4) mistakes and trust, and 5) the merging of leadership and technology. Avolio then looks at the state-of-art of leadership development today, examines strategic leadership development, and presents a model that predicts performance and can be used for development. The final chapter provides supporting research for each preceding chapter. The hallmark of this book is its in-depth treatment of the subject. It is loaded with rich content. This is a masterful work on an complex subject. ... Read more
