4-0 out of 5 stars thought-provoking for leadership wonks
One my most-recommended books whenever discussions about "leadership" or "control" go sideways.Flawed, but discerning readers can extract real-life applications of the models and metaphors herein.Worthy of updating and reissuing with a new market positioning that will expand its audience beyond psychoanalytical circles.

5-0 out of 5 stars Power corrupts, or does it?
James Hillman is often thought of as a demanding and difficult writer -- in need of being "popularized" by someone like Thomas Moore ("Care of the Soul") to reach a wider audience. And there may be some truth to this, but Hillman can also be remarkably accessible, as in this thought-provoking book on the "intelligent uses" of power.3-0 out of 5 stars a clever study
Other reviewers have touched on the positive aspects of Hillman's book.It is a nice study of power and its intricacies from a depth-psychological, multidisciplinary, poetic perspective.A reader new to Hillman won't find this work as technical as others (e.g., Re-Visioning Psychology).Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Insightful!
Robert Hargrove presents a well-organized look at the world of creative collaboration. He argues that collaboration is the new paradigm in a world of change and complexity, as well as an effective management strategy. Hargrove provides a hands-on guide to becoming more collaborative and to organizing effective collaborative groups. In this lively, engaging book, Hargrove shows his familiarity with the latest management expertise. He draws on quotes and ideas from such authors as Margaret Wheatley, Peter Senge and Tom Peters. We [...] recommend this book to executives and managers who wish to facilitate collaborations.
5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best business books of the decade! Tom Peters
I read Robert Hargrove's book on Masterful Coaching which focused on the individual, and prayed he would write one on collaboration. Not your cookie cutter approach to business books . . 5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic book!
I was really inspired by this book and would highly recommend it to anyone who has dreams of creating something with others who may see the world differently.Hargrove paints a picture of what collaboration is that isvery distinct and that is brought to life with some facinatingexamples--what he calls interludes. I especially liked the one on the MidEast Peace Accord and found it relevant to what is happening there now.Hargrove's guidelines for building a collaboration and for havingcollaborative conversations have been a lifesaver in the project that I amworking on. They make a lot of sense and have been easy to apply. I can seewhy so many of the teams that I have worked on were not as successful as Iwould have liked. Thank you for a wonderful book that is fun to read andloaded with useful tools! ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Heirarchy of Needs is the value in the book
The key element of Abraham Maslow's work, especially as it applies to the business world is that while organizations and economies change, people and psychology remain relatively constant.Mr. Maslow's work was about his desire to better understand what truly makes humans strive to reach their potential.5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Maslow primer for business & management students
This collection assembles Abraham Maslow's most instructive, intuitive thoughts and essays into one important volume. Gleaned from the wealth of behavioural research and analysis Dr Maslow left upon his death in 1970,the selections reveal a man comfortable with his position in history, tireless in his efforts to better understand what truly makes humans striveto reach their potential, and gifted in his ability to translate the mostprofound concepts and realities into entertaining, thought-provokingprose.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars My View About This Career Path Book
When someone has a difficult time deciding what he/she wants to do career-wise, then this book should help them make a decision, because it is based on their personality.Otherwise,
5-0 out of 5 stars Very insightful!
This book was recommended to me by my company's HR training manager and it is brilliant! Written for people who know their Myers-Briggs type, it describes the sort of work environment your type would thrive in along a continuum; meaning, it allows for a range of behavior and is flexible enough to avoid rigidly defining you and your options, yet it's defined enough to be helpful. I know that many people consider Myers-Briggs to be hocus-pocus, but if you found the typing to be insightful, you'll find the book to be doubly so. For someone who is job hunting -- or in my case, considering switching careers -- it really gave me a new perspective on how I work, and what works best for me, along with suggested fields and suggested positions in those fields. One caveat, this book isn't a job-hunters guide. It just helps you find your direction, and reminds you of your work preferences to guide you when you are considering a potential job.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Career Book I've Read
I'm 32 and in the midst of a career change which has involved extensive self assessment.Prior to reading this book I visited several career counselors, took the PAR Self Directed Assessment and Myers Briggs assessment and read numerous books on careers. This book really surprized me.At first I was skeptical but after going through it I was very impressed with the personality typing system and how well my personality type matched me.The only warning that I would have is that since the listing of the possible careers are in broad categories a person needs to spend some time learning about different careers by talking to people in them, reasearching and shadowing at the workplaces before jumping ahead. For example, I might be excellent as a dental researcher but hate the routine of the day to day practice of dentistry. However, this is a great book and I recommend it highly as a starting point in any career search.Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Not even one star.More likenegative 5 stars
For those that like using these factors in your labor force I suggest you practice the techniques on someone in your family first, see how it effects them when someone plays with their mind - and I don't mean the family members you aren't fond of.Pick the ones you really care about and apply this strategy on them.I bet you end up getting a divorce or written out of a will or two, and forget about seeing the grand kids at Christmas.
1-0 out of 5 stars Especially disturbing.
An especially disturbing book because it provides management who wish to do so with a pseudo-scientific pretext for using fear as a tool against their fellow members of the organization. Additionally, these ideas applied promote factionalization among organizational members, which increases complexity by causing people to work for a subset, rather than the whole of an organization. This is encouragement to compete rather than cooperate. If this work were written by a foreign writer, I would guess that it's intent was to help perpetuate international business superiority by giving North American management poor, neo-Tayloristic ideals wrapped (warped) in an attractive package and presented as new thinking. Fear as a motivation is a tool of the insipient, including self-serving management. Management by Fear should find the same way as Taylorism, Management by Objective and other idiotic management principles, onto the old heap of intellectual rubbish we should be embarassed of. For constructive management theory, read about Japanese conglomerates we buy most of our better products from, or explore W.E. Deming's Profound Changes.

5-0 out of 5 stars Highly Recommended!
At first glance, Judith Bardwick's influential book, first published in the early 90s, seems scarcely relevant in the opening months of the 21st century. After all, the sense of corporate entitlement that she documented was certainly swept away in the layoffs, restructurings and reengineerings of the last decade, right? Of course, anyone working in a large organization today knows that's not entirely the case. Bloated bureaucracies still exist. But more importantly, Bardwick's simple observation that external economic environments influence and even create internal workplace environments is just as true today as it was the day she wrote it. So too are her words of advice about managing and harnessing employee fear to motivate a workforce into a productive mindset. That said, not all of Barwick's observations have aged so well. For example, you'd be hard pressed to make the case today that the work ethic has died in America. Nevertheless, we [...] recommend this book not as a slice of management history, but as a relevant and practical discourse on employee motivation.

For years this title of Goldberg's was the single most popular Enneagram title among professionals I spoke with. Very effectively organized and engagingly written, it's quite accessible to complete Enneagram newbies - and yet offers a lot of depth for those who want to keep referring back and mulling over the countless applications and implications of this fascinating study of human behavior.5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best practical introductions on the enneagram
If you are new to the enneagram, or have extensive knowledge of it, Mr. Goldberg's book is an excellent resource. 1-0 out of 5 stars Refund???!!!!!???
My review for this item is a bad one because I purchased the book and then right before it was supposed to arrive in my hands they initiate a refund because they are "unable to fulfill your order." I was not pleased. So my advice to you, be careful, they might have an "inventory discrepancy" and therefore you will not get the book you purchased.

3-0 out of 5 stars A Solid Effort!
Worktypes can be a very useful tool for understanding how your personality affects your efficiency at work. Strategies for maximizing your strengths and minimizing your weaknesses are offered as well as tips for dealing with personality types other than your own. Unfortunately, the book offers only a brief description of personality types. For readers to get the full value from this book, it is suggested that they read a book with more detailed descriptions of the 16 types. (The authors suggest the 1989 book, Lifetypes, but any number of books focusing on the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator and psychological type will do.) Without a clear understanding of the 16 psychological types, it is difficult to apply most of the information in the book. However, with an appropriate companion book, Worktypes can be instrumental in your quest to improve your effectiveness at work. We [...] recommend this book to a wide range of readers, since the personality breakdowns can be of value to anyone from the most powerful leaders of corporations to their front-line employees.
4-0 out of 5 stars User-Friendly Reading
As someone very familiar with the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator, I foundWorkTypes to be a very useful tool.As we learn about type in theworkplace, it's important to emphasize that type shouldn't limit the kindof work or activities we choose. The explanations "Using Type Knowledgeat Work" and "How not to use Type at Work" should berequired reading for any employee whose workplace in undergoingrestructuring. The preference combinations used narrow down the kindof information shared. An individual who is new to type, and wants tolearn more about it on a casual basis, won't be bogged down in temperamentor dominant function theories.Scenarios illustrating workplaceissues--Leading, Meetings, Change, Communications--are very realistic. Many readers can identify with these situations. The suggestions given toimprove these situations are effective andwritten in a language that iseasily converted to actual application.I wish that I had access to thisbook earlier in my planning process.Since that time, I have recommendedthe book as part of my workshops.Type notwithstanding, I have also foundits applications useful in other environments outside the office. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The Guide to Follow Through Change Management
Most change management books I've read are about "managing change" into an organization. This book captures a model to manage the follow through on change - managing how the change is being received by those affected. This book has helped me understand why managing change into an organization is received well by some and not by others and to determine the gaps I need to look for. If you think you've managed the "sending" of the change into the organization, then read this book to learn how to follow through on change management by understanding the "receiving" of change.

5-0 out of 5 stars Finally! A practical approach to change
Now there is a practical guide for employees to determine their readiness to organizational change. It's easy to read, easy to understand and affordable. The ADKAR model allows the employee to examine five elements that are necessary for change: awareness, desire, knowledge, ability, reinforcement.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A good practical overview of a performace management best practice
A 360-degree feedback survey collects inputs from bosses, subordinates, peers, clients and customers and even self-evaluations to create a complete picture of performance, pinpointing areas for improvement. This is a more reliable indicator of performance because no one person is able to see all aspects of an employee's performance, or to report on all of the many roles that an employee may fill. The authors believe that you should use the information from 360-degree performance evaluation not just on an individual basis, but as a foundation for an organization-wide performance management system that applies to every individual and group in the company.A performance management system can help your organization in many ways:
5-0 out of 5 stars Why Do We Measure?
"For several reasons", M.London and W.Tornow write, "360-degree feedback has become a popular technique in organizations today. The complexity of jobs requires that employees have feedback from avariety of constituencies, not just their supervisor, who has traditionallybeen the source of feedback and performance review. Also, organizationalrestructuring and downsizing place the burden of development on theemployee. Today's organizations generally do not provide structured careerpaths with promises of job security and advancement. Rather, individualsneed to be responsible for their continued ability to add value to theorganization. The organization enables this by providing a variety ofresources, which often include access to training to improve current jobperformance and prepare for tomorrow; 360-degree feedback may be part ofthis development process (from the Introduction pp. 2-3)."Read more
