3-0 out of 5 stars Good overview.
This book presents a good overview of topics in Organizational and Industrial Psychology and was helpful to me in studying for a course. However, I am appalled and irritated with the amount of typographical errors in a book that cost me $100. There's an error on every other page! I've encountered at least five just this evening. The content is good but the proofreading needs a lot of attention. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A sound theory and practical methods
This is a very readable book for which we intend to build courseware around. The book is laid out in a logical and progressive order. Each chapter table of contents can be used as headers for class notes. At the end of each chapter, there's an excellent summary and graphic diagrams or tables that can be used as jobaids. If you read, understand, and apply the information in this book it will definetely enable you to make more accurate assessements of "undesirable effects" and propose sensible solutions.

4-0 out of 5 stars Root-Cause Analysis and Reality Trees
Dettmer's discussion on finding root causes of undesirable conditions or effects is the best I've seen. It's easy to go down a rathole when trying to drill into a set of what appears to be causes of the undisirable conditions. He also shows strong value of using reality trees to define what is and how we might be able to get to what ought to be.

4-0 out of 5 stars The textbook on HR coaching
Frederic M. Hudson wrote this exhaustive reference manual and survey of the field of coaching primarily for coaches and aspiring coaches. He focuses on teaching the best practices in coaching and conveying knowledge, extensive resources, thorough book lists and professional programs. The real message underneath all this data is that a good coach is the ultimate human resource. If you're a coach, you'll benefit from the book's thoroughness. If you're unfamiliar with the field, it's a textbook for understanding many facets of professional coaching and its impact on people and organizations. We recommend Hudson's book particularly to coaches, and also to those who want to learn more about coaching, human resource managers, business libraries, and executives who are recruiting coaches or team leaders. Just forget the idea that all you need to know you learned in kindergarten; to thrive, you need to keep learning continuously. Just ask a coach.

5-0 out of 5 stars Hudson is the real deal.
The author has been working with adult developement and coaching since earning his PhD in the 60's.Hudson shows us how the field of coaching relies on the work from a variety of disciplines. He provides many sources from these disciplines to help aid coaches when working with specific groups or specific problems. For anyone building a strong foundation in coaching, this is a great reference book to have handy on your shelf. It's especially useful for newly-trained coaches who might need a deeper understanding of their profession or a good way to avoid reinventing the wheel.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Handbook and Silent Coaching Partner
As a Life Skills Coach, based in Melbourne Australia, I am always on the search for coaching texts that will enhance my professional skills and coaching knowledge. 'The Handbook of Coaching' is with out a doubt I believe one of the most valuable coaching resource materials I have discovered. Hudson has covered a great deal of material, yet the insights into the various areas of coaching, methodologies and foundations of coaching, are supported by an excellent bibliography section, relevant to the end of each chapter.Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Look to market experts for success
So long as market investors are human beings rather than machines, market participants will be governed by emotion. The efficient market theory, as Warren Buffett states, works most of the time. But when unusual or exceptional news comes into play, a stock (and/or markets) nearly always overreacts.
2-0 out of 5 stars Selective Presentation of the Evidence
I am a behavioral economist with a deep belief in the notion that human decision-makers deviate in important ways from the scientific principles laid down in modern rational choice theory. There is no doubt but that very many investors hold erroneous notions of the dynamics of price movements, and having a correct understanding will, on average lead to better returns on one's portfolio. Sheffrin presents the evidence for this position in an interesting and accessible manner.
5-0 out of 5 stars Packed with Knowledge !
If only you could bring yourself to ditch those losers from your portfolio, and hang onto your winners. If you can, you are unusual. Unprofitable habits afflict nearly all investors, beginners and pros alike, writes Hersh Shefrin in this intriguing study of the role of emotions in investing. Shefrin balances the jargon with plenty of real-world examples and wisely cautions you not to delude yourself into thinking that his tips will make you rich. Viewing investing through the prism of behavior finance, he analyzes emotionally-laden decisions made by private investors, money managers, bankers and other professionals handling stocks and various other forms of investments including options, foreign currency and futures. Shefrin offers juicy case histories, so his tour of behavioral finance is mostly enjoyable and useful. At times, though, the book bogs down in the author's attempts to legitimize behavior finance, a relatively new school of thought. For instance, he charges failed investors with committing "heuristic bias" or falling prey to "representativeness." That quibble aside, we recommend this intriguing tome to investment decision makers on any level. Whether you are running billions or managing a retirement account (which, as Shefrin notes, most people do badly), maybe this book will buffer you against emotional investing and pocketbook pain. ... I got this book after attending her EMBA class at Sabanci University. She is truly one of the 'all stars' in the field. She has the know-how and the right attitude. If you have a chance to attend to her course do it; if not get the book. Very highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars Well-grounded OB course basics
"The organizational behavior reader" contains twenty chapters, each with two or three readings by recognized academic experts, usually adapted from the original source, e.g., Harvard Business Review. Chapters begin with the psychological contract (1), theories of managing people (2), individual and organizational learning (3), individual and organizational motivation (4), ethics and values (5), personal growth and work stress (6), and later topics include managing diversity (12), leadership (13), decision making (15), performance appraisal (18), and managing change (20). The pantheon of authors features experts such as Henry Mintzberg, Jay Conger, Denise Rousseau, Ed Lawler, Peter Senge, Cary Cooper, Deborah Tannen, Geert Hofstede, Hank Sims, Victor Vroom, Jeffrey Pfeffer, Ray Miles, and Rosabeth Moss Kanter. There are numerous charts, diagrams, graphs and models. Anecdotes and examples are plentiful. Self-assessments are rare. Few of the readings offer empirical data; the emphasis is on mental models, images, and concepts.5-0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Book!

4-0 out of 5 stars Good, but with Keynes included it would have been better
The authors of this book, like so many other psychologists in the area of decision making under uncertainty(ambiguity)in the real world ,as opposed to risk, appear to think that "modern"behavioral decision theory started with Daniel Ellsberg and advanced on the shoulders of Tversky and Kahneman with Hogarth and Einhorn close behind. They do a good job covering the conventional wisdom of that view.Unfortunately, they ignore the seminal and path breaking contributions made to the field of decision making under uncertainty by John Maynard Keynes in his classic work, titled A Treatise on Probability in 1921.Keynes was the first to systematically develop an interval estimate(set) approach to the calculation of probabilities.Keynes was the first to specify an index to measure the ambiguity of the potential available evidence upon which a decision maker would attempt to make reliable probability estimates.Keynes called this problem the weight of the evidence problem.Forty years before Ellsberg(1961),Keynes had already specified an index to measure the completeness of the relevant available evidence,w.w was defined on the unit interval between 0 and 1,i.e.,0<=w<=1.Keynes's w index is practically the same as Ellsberg's rho index.Keynes successfully generalized the expected value rule(maximize pA=EMV)and the expected utility rule(maximize pU(A))where p is a probability,A is the outcome, and U is an appropriately differentiable utility function with his decision weight model that he called a conventional coefficient of weight and risk,c.The goal of the decision maker is to maximize cA,where c equals p/(1+q)[2w/(1+w}].Keynes's decision weight rule ,c, not only solves all ofthe Ellsberg paradox problems, but also the certainty ,reflection , and translation effect problems,as well as the preference reversal problems.

4-0 out of 5 stars An interesting read
I read this book as part of a college course on cognition. It was defintely the most interesting of the 3 books we read in this class.5-0 out of 5 stars Helps you understand decisions -- and life, too
The authors emphasize that decision-making is a skill that can be learned and improved. As I work with career changers, I have become convinced that most of us have not learned this skill, and most of us could benefit from a careful reading of this book. Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Not in the same league as the Inner Game of Tennis
I read the Inner Game of Tennis in the 70s, found it revolutionary and find myself dipping into it every few years. I picked up the Inner Game of Work with great expectations, particularly after seeing Peter Senge's endorsement as The Fifth Discipline is a great book. However, I am disappointed. The writing style is turgid, the arguments not as tight as the Inner Game of Tennis and overall, the effort to transpose Inner Game concepts to the world of work don't quite come off. Perhaps tighter editing would have made for a more cohesive work?

4-0 out of 5 stars The "Inner Game" applied to the workplace
This is a descent book including a lot of good advice on how to improve your performance and success within a business and corporate environment. The advice flows naturally from the author's foundation established with his first book `The Inner Game of Tennis.'However, the themes and methods are not too repetitive. The book reads very well and easily.

Editorial Review

Anyone who has sat through a psychology course has seen Abraham H. Maslow's hierarchy of needs, a pyramid capped by the highest human need of all, the need for, what Maslow famously termed, self-actualization. Since his death in 1970, Maslow's voluminous writings have made him one of the most influential thinkers in counseling psychology. He is a revered father figure to the human potential movement. But few know him as a brilliantly insightful analyst of how to lead people and make organizations more productive. Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Insights lost in Maslow's ramblings.
Without the commentary, you would be hard pressed to pick out Maslow's insights in this stream-of-conscience puffery. 5-0 out of 5 stars A TRUE CLASSIC, AS RELEVANT AS EVER
One of the world's most renowned experts on human behaviour and motivation, Abraham Maslow is most famous for his perspectives on the "hierarchy of human needs" and self-actualization. This book updates the original edition published in 1963, entitled Eupsychian Management. It demonstrates how even today Maslow's seminal concepts of human behaviour are still playing out in the business world. This book offers new generations of managers insights into Maslow's influential theories which have emerged in modern business, approaches such as continuous improvement, enlightened management, Theory X, and empowerment. Maslow's work has powerfully affected managerial theory, organizational development, education, health care, and science as well as psychology.5-0 out of 5 stars Great
This is a very accessible book of brilliant ideas about management, and human nature in general. U. S. Grant once said, "the best man for thejob doesn't go after the job, he waits to be called." This bookaffirms what I've long thought, that people like Bill Clinton and RichardNixon, who were desperate to be president, so that they lied and cheated, etc., to get that power, are the LAST people who SHOULD be President (orCEO or whatever). Those who WANT the power are psychologically sick in someway. And Clinton and Nixon should have both gone to prison. They both brokethe law. Psychopaths LOVE having power, and both Nixon and Clintondisplayed strong psychopathic characteristics. This book gives one somefaith in human nature because it shows that the best way to motivate humansis to NURTURE them and give them FREEDOM. That if allowed, they will beGOOD and PRODUCTIVE. There is a worthwhile insight on almost every page ofthis book. And Maslow had an IQ of 195. So he was no idiot. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An invaluable, practical guide for students & practitioners
Organisational Research Methods is an invaluable, practical guide for both students and practitioners in the social sciences. This book is particularly unique as it provides the theoretical/academic bases for research yet translates these into practical steps for how to undertake best practice research. The authors highlight a plethora of issues that researchers themselves may not have considered, and provide constructive advice for addressing each possible problem that may arise during the course of a research project. Based on their expertise and experience as both practitioners and academics, the authors provide helpful examples throughout the book that assist the reader in applying the knowledge directly to their own project.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A must read for every consultant.
The 31 chapters organized into 8 sections are a treasure for any one who serves in a consulting role. The text is written for psychologist but is of extraordinary value for consultants in all domains. Of broad interest are the chapters on "Assessing Candidates for Leadership Positions," "Individual Level Variables," "The Effectiveness of Executive Coaching," "Integrating Individual Assessment, Position Requirements, Team-Based Competencies, and Organizational Vision," "Successfully Implementing Teams," "Proactive Ways to Improve Leadership Performance," and two areas on Organizational Performance. Well worth both the price and the time to read it. ... Read more
