Editorial Review

Dale Carnegie, step aside--this sharply designed, itty-bitty handbookaims to give you, in 72 pages, all the key strategies you need to get along withand manage people in the workplace... and sometimes even succeeds! Here, withthe help of lots of snappy sidebars, graphics, checklists, and charts, you'lllearn how to develop basic people skills like understanding human behavior, building people's confidence, and gaining their trust; develop the people youmanage in the workplace by providing training, improving their skills, nurturingtalent, motivating progress, and teaching by example; find solutions to thorny"people problems" like how to build positive work environments, open closedminds, handle conflict, and deal with "difficult types"; and assess yourpeople's performances and reward them accordingly. Granted, if you're lookingfor very specific or in-depth guidance, you may find this book too cursory andgeneral in its approach. But if you're looking for a thumbnail guide to thebasics, it'll do you just fine.Read more

Editorial Review

Work, for most of us, is something we do, not something we think about. We may wonder whether our work is sufficiently stimulating, whether it brings in enough money, or whether it makes a difference in the grand scheme of things, but we don't often question what, in fact, work really is, and why we work in the first place. 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book
Prof. Ciulla tackles this central component of Life from different directions. The book will make you think and maybe even change your preferences in life.

5-0 out of 5 stars Makes use of myriad areas to exemplify values and attitudes
This book explores the over-worked state of Americans today and why people work at all. The author helps readers discover the values and attitudes expressed in their jobs using history, literature, popular culture, and personal anecdotes. Many good insights.
4-0 out of 5 stars A more optimistic 'Nickel and Dimed"
Sciulla's book avoids policy conclusions, and other theoretical certainties as other books like Fogels' 4th Awakening. She notes the interesting point that "Today, clock time measures events" in the past events measured time. For example, in Magadascar a half hour was measured by the time it took to cook rice. She became interested in the nature of work when she subsidised one job teaching philosophy with another as a waitress in a restaurant. Ms. Ciulla is particularly struck by the fact thatt wealth has not brought happiness. People continue to want to earn a living. Even when people have enough to live on, many of them continue to want to work, remaining perplexed at the fact that while life is supposed to be easier, many continue to seek meaning through employment. However, she notes, employment provides a schedule and a rythm for daily life and serves as an outlet ofr greater forms of community participation. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Required Reading for Psychologists in Organizations
This is a book that all professionals and graduate students in Industrial Psychology and Human Resource Consulting should read. I have used this book, or the earlier version, as a required text in my courses. The authors do an excellent job of showing how the ethical principles can be applied to practical problems, although the coverage appears to be more aimed at practitioners than researchers. The book covers most of the important issues. However, in future editions, I would like to see expanded coverage of issues of informed consent, intellectual property, and problems encountered by students doing research in organizations (the reason for 4 rather than 5 stars).

5-0 out of 5 stars Interesting new approach to learning and performing
This book presents a fundamentally different view on working and learning. This other view leads to more pleasure, better performance and more effective learning in work. The ideas in this book are so powerful and relevant and Gallwey describes them so clearly that it seems virtually impossible nt to apply them. Gallwey's core message is: the traditional way in which we try to improve ourselves and our performance -through (self-)instruction and supervision- blocks what we try to achieve. To be more specific: an instructive, controlling approach to performance improvement does not lead to better but to worse performance! 5-0 out of 5 stars Plugging into True Potential
The true achievement of Timothy Gallwey is his 'putting his finger on theexact, right spot'. Not only the spot where our barriers in achieving ourfull potentials lie, but also on how to evade and avoid these barriers. Hisbook on Work (after his books on Tennis and Golf) is very well written.Through his natural flowing writing style he is able to establish aparadigm shift with the reader. Then, throughout the book, he keeps thereader firmly attentive to 'the inner game' paradigm and makes the subjectcome alive using theory and stories as building blocks. Once you have readthis book, you will never look at achievement the same way. Not foryourself nor for anybody else. This book is an absolute must-read for allmodern workers providing understanding of how true fun, learning andachievement works from-the-inside-out. Do not be surprised though when thisbook will also positively impact your view on, and handling of, many otheraspects of life outside your work. Get it; you will not be disappointed.

5-0 out of 5 stars Unleash the Natural Learner Within By Using A Changed Focus
This book deserves more than five stars, because it explains how you can be most effective in learning, gaining experience, and achieving higher performance. The principles are based on Mr. Gallwey's earlier successfulcoaching experiences and books about the inner games of tennis and golf. That may sound like an unlikely way to approach becoming more effective atwork, but it is unusually effective for those who have ever played tennisor golf by providing a visceral point of reference.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good introduction to Human Factors Engineering
Wickens et al. really fill the gap between system engineering and cognitive psychology. I have found quite a few of books of this kind. 5-0 out of 5 stars Extraordinary!
Wickens is a true pioneer in the field of human factors who fills the gap between (system) engineering and cognitive psychology with great diligence and competence. This book, "An Introduction to Human Factors Engineering", is another excellent reference tool made for engineers to integrate psychologic research results in their creations; I read it in combination with Wickens' "Engineering Psychology and Human Performance", which concentrates rather on the psychological perspective of human factors than on practical design advices. Both books have considerable overlappings, and are similar to each other, even in the structure of the chapters; nevertheless, I highly recommend them both. I have not (yet) found better literature for this field.

3-0 out of 5 stars Valuable introduction and future resource to Human Factors,
Informative presentation of basic Human Factors principles from a psychology perspective.Touches on Cognition, Perception, and the Design Process. The last of which is extremely valuable for any UI design.Handy reference tool. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Very outdated
A 1950s book with a 1990s preface. Might have some historicbut not scientific value. Data and hypotheses are archaic by today's standards.

5-0 out of 5 stars This stands the test of time
I first read this 35 years ago and thought it the most profound book I had seen. I still think so. I gave me an understanding of one of the fundamental forces able to shape (pervert) human history. Neglect the author's foibles and get the message. Your beliefs can be manipulated, fundamentally altered, by anyone who cares to use the methods descibed here.
5-0 out of 5 stars Conversion - religious and political
This is an important book for what it reveals about the nature of interrogation. Interrogation, as it is practiced' is not about finding the truth but about creating a set of new beliefs in the prisoner. As the author, Sargent, points out this may be entirely unintentional on the part of the questioner. However the techniques they use to overcome their subject's resistance act to put him/her in a state of heightened suggestibility. The examiner by his/her questions supplies to the subject the substance of new beliefs. The stress that they put the subject under cause distinct and predictable physiological effects that result in the subject losing his/her previous sets of beliefs.

5-0 out of 5 stars Get It If You Are Displaced Person
I would strongly recommend this book to anyone who has been retrenched, made redundant, involuntarily exited from the workplace or simply disillusioned with his or her workplace. A step by step manual on how to transition or transform yourself and make a comeback. Full of tips and suggestions, if you are a career hunter, it would be useful to have this text handy. Its got some stories of individuals' experiences and therefore this should be helpful in enabling you to make a move, if you are hesitating.

4-0 out of 5 stars Lubin Hits the Mark
On the brink of layoff, I found this book at the library among the usual collection of books on resume' building, interviewing and job search. Reading the first chapters about downsizing I could see that this book was about my story, starting with the "On The Brink" experience of knowing something drastic is about to happen soon. Turns out the book is about the internal challenges and transitions involved in loosing a job, dealing with "what to do next" and how to make the journy to the next job a rewarding one.5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent, content-rich resource
As a career counselor, I am always searching for resources that are both informative about the psycholological impact of change and pragmatic enough to provide concrete guidance for persons navigating a career transition. This is the book I most often suggest to clients who have been laid off or are otherwise in the middle of a job change under challenging circumstances. I highly recommend this book. ... Read more
