3-0 out of 5 stars GOOD TEXT BOOK
The book is very good but it is structured like a text book. Its couching is a little heavy, not flowing like the divulgation books.
5-0 out of 5 stars Classic work on perception, updated
This is the classic introduction to perception and psychophysics, and remains as readable and entertaining as it was 30 years ago when I read the first edition. Gregory's was one of the few books on the subject accessible to the non-specialist that tackled some of the more difficult topics, such as how the physiology and anatomy of the eye contributes to perception, as in the case of physiological optics, retinal receptive field geometry, ocular domimance and saccadic eye movements, as well as other traditional areas such as color perception, space perception, and so on. There are also very engrossing discussions of split-brain experiments and optical illusions, probably the most fun part of the book for most people, which are worth reading just for themselves. Overall this is still a great book and one that everyone should read to gain better understanding of how their own visual systems and brains work to enable us to see and perceive the many simple and complex aspects of the visual world. After reading this book you'll have much of the background to read David Marr's later book, entitled simply Vision. This important work contains discussions of more complex visual cortical brain mechanisms and of Marr's important work in that area. Marr discusses his important concept of the "primal sketch" for extracting line primitives, which relates to retinal receptive-field geometry, and then works up from there to more sophisticated spatial-frequency filtering algorithms and mechanisms--ideas that revolutionized our understanding of vision and the brain.

Historians explore the early experiences of Lincoln, Churchill, Einstein, Hitler, and Napoleon to find the beginnings of the motivation which shaped their careers.Attempting to learn why people do what they do in particular places and times help to understand their motivations and the consequences.Basic reality is that each and every person is living in and reacting to his environment in different ways at different times.Cyclical changes take place according to the immediate environments and the participants in this drama called life.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent! A complete guide on the topic.
6 out 5 stars Excellent! Healing the Divided Self is a necessary resource for any therapist or student ofmodern psychotherapy.I also would recommend it as a textbook for advanced psychology classes.I particularlyliked how Phillips and Frederick integrated ego-state therapy andhypnotherapy with other forms of therapy such as psychodynamic andcognitive-behavioral.Their use of case examples and sample scripts givethe reader a sense of being in the therapy process and the ability topractice and replicate steps that initially would seem overwhelming to anovice therapist. Healing the Divided Self is a complete resource -covering the topic of dissociation and integration from diagnosis, thehypnotherapeutic relationship, the stages of personality integration, transference and countertransference issues, emergencies, the use ofmedication, and spirituality and the generative self. As atherapist, myself, I have found this book invaluable, not only withpatients suffering with severe dissociative disorders, but with the"normal" range of daily disorienting experiences that split usfrom our adult achievements and confidence. Those working with lesscomplicated cases, or simply personnel issues, know that all of usdissociate somewhat under pressure, stress, loss, or simply having buttonspushed by parents and loved ones.Anyone interested in gaining a greaterunderstanding the very human experience of splitting from one's central, strong self, and how to help themselves and others, will benefit fromreading Healing the Divided Self.Read more

This co-author of Dr. Edward Hallowell's book is under rated to say the least. This book written in every day language explains the workings of the brain that are useful to the lay-person and professional alike. Dr. Ratey explains his points with helpful analogies and illustrations. . Written for audiences intermediate-level of information, yet can be comprehended by even the novice. 5-0 out of 5 stars Can't Live Without It (but using 4th edition)
This was the first book I ever purchased in SLP. My prof instructed us to buy for building our professional library. At the time, I thought THANKS A LOT. I thought I had just wasted money on a book I didn't need for the class. Since that time, I have used this book for countless term papers, clinical reports, cross referencing more difficult texts, and looking up spellings regularly. My addition has several developmental charts and testing indexes. My only complaint is that the more medicaly based terminology is missing(ie: the anatomical structures are realy just the greatest hits of the larynx and brain, and I am a bit lost when it comes to none SLP or AUD measures at the hospital rotations). I hope this has been improved for the new edition, but at the same time would hate it to become to cumbersome to use. I am nearing the end of my Masters' and coming up on the Praxis exam. I intend to use this as a way to study across several topics in the field. All in all a GREAT REFERENCE! ... Read more

Editorial Review

Take a trip through the topography of the brain, and you're likely to get lost somewhere around the medulla oblongata. Zen can lose you before you've even pretzeled your legs into the lotus position. But a unique neurologist-Zen Buddhist has written a tome that is a map to all the mysteries of meditation and mind. Take breathing out, for example. We spend just over half of our breathing time exhaling. For meditating monks, it's a full three-quarters. EEGs show us that the act of exhaling helps physically quiet the brain. Many other causal connections can be found between Zen practices and the physiology of the brain, and James H. Austin lays them out one by one, drawing from his own Zen experiences and the latest in neurological research. So if you've ever wondered what the corpus callosum has to do with consciousness or how the limbic system contributes to enlightenment, Austin will get your brain racing and put your mind at ease. 1-0 out of 5 stars where is the brain center for compassion?
so he spent his sabbaticals doing things to cat brains?
5-0 out of 5 stars Thought provoking book of paradox
This very detailed and voluminous book delves into two subjects, which at times appear very different and not easily connected. On the one hand, the author provides an excellent description of his experience with Zen Buddhism. He describes how Zen is a very rigorous practice and recounts his own progress. Perhaps the strongest aspect of the book is the careful use of terms. Concepts such as "emptiness" and "suchness" are explained in detail. There is an interpretation of the Freudian concepts of ego and id, and a distinction made between the egocentric "I" and the pragmatic "I". The egocentric "I" is further defined as "I-Me-Mine" - different aspects of the selfish and limiting ego, driven by cravings.

5-0 out of 5 stars A real winner - solid information, with practical, inspirati
Having suffered from panic disorder and phobias on and off for about 15 years,I have seen lots of therapists and read lots of books, none of which touched me like Triumph Over Fear. The author, Jerilyn Ross, is the first person I've encountered who combines both the knowledge of someone who has successfully worked with patients for over 20 years with the empathy and compassion of someone who has been there herself. As I read through Jerilyn's personal story and the various case studies of patients whom she has treated I realized that in spite of what well meaning therapists or authors can teach me about panic attacks, only someone who has experienced the irrational, seemingly out-of control spiralling of an attack can give me the assurance and confidence I needed to move forward. In addition, the self-help portion of the book gave me specific, practical things to work on by myself and with my therapist - which ultimately lead me to making wonderful personal progress. I highly recommend this book to anyone suffering from panic attacks as well as to family members trying to understand their loved ones' condition.
5-0 out of 5 stars Easiest to relate to book on fear
I've been dealing with an anxiety problem for about 10 years now, only I have been doing it the wrong way with countless drugs given to me by my doctor. There comes a crossroads when you just can't do it like that anymore.I spent the past 3 years getting off the drugs that have done more harm than good and am now learning what I should have learned in the beginning.I have read a ton of books on this disorder and to be honest, some of them you feel the need to have a dictionary beside you they are so complex. The writers forget they are writing the book for people who are not familiar with medical terminology in their everyday lives.Triumph Over Fear is different from the rest in many ways.First, it is easy to understand for just about anyone and is clearly written. Most importantly, it isn't written by someone who has merely studied the problem but has never actually felt what it's like to go through it.It makes no difference how many medical books you have read, how many people you have met, how many letters you have added to the end of your professional name. Unless you've been through this problem you really cannot fully understand it.This author has and that makes her words that much more powerful. This book should be in everyone's home whether you are suffering currently with anxiety or deal with someone you are trying to help but just can't seem to understand why they feel the way they do.Don't wait as long as I did, your life is waiting but the freedom is in you.5-0 out of 5 stars Well written and informative
This is a good book. It was referred to me by my psychiatrist for OCD. Although it did not address my issues and help me much with my needs, it did make me realize that my problems compare little to some of the issues and difficulties other people have! I liked the book very much and found it very encouraging and informative. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Omissions and Narrow Viewpoint
This book has some excellent information which can be found in other less biased books. Since the author is a doctor, I'd expect him to have the viewpoint he does. However, unlike other authors on the topic, he is completely negligent in his presentation. He completely overstresses the biological component of anxiety and the necessity of medication, calling the psychological viewpoint outdated.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book
I've had this book for 13 years and never attempted to read it until now.I thought alot of my symptoms were unique to me because I never heard of anyone else having them until I read this book. I like the way the author describes all of the steps anxiety goes through. It has helped me to recognize things I went through before I realized I had a problem with anxiety. I really feel much better about myself and believe that I do have a chance to get over my problems with anxiety.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent introductory book about anxiety
An excellent book about panic attacks which approaches the disease from a biological perspective. Sheehan covers the seven progressive stages of the disease, causes, treatment and recovery, using case histories as examples. The book also contains an anxiety scale to help you determine whether the level of your anxiety is excessive. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars a recommended prerequisite...
I had difficulty with this work when I tackled it a decade ago. I recently took up Richard C. Vitzthum's "Materialism: An Affirmative History and Definition" and benefitted tremendously by learning the context in which "Neurophilosophy" developed.
3-0 out of 5 stars unfortunately congested and overly-technical
i have a full shelf when it comes to philosophy and cog-sci, so when i saw this title i picked it up naturally.however compelled i am to get through it, i haven't finished this book.
5-0 out of 5 stars Out of date now...but motivates modern developments
Published over 17 years ago, this book was one of the first examples of the now accelerating trend to make philosophical investigations into the mind/brain problem accountable to modern science. Pure speculation once dominated any discussion of the mind (or the brain) and therefore progress in the field by any measure was non-existent. There are of course still purely philosophical investigations into the mind/body problem, but these will no doubt decay rapidly with time as scientific investigations continue to lay to rest various "impossibility" claims philosophers have made about the physical brain. Indeed, in this century, the rise of machine intelligence will hammer the last nail in the coffin of mind/brain philosophical speculation. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A very practical CBT book for treating anxiety disorders
I agree with the previous reviewers comments; this is a must have CBT book.I use this book a great deal in my psychiatric practice to treat patients suffering from anxiety disorders. It has patient manuals which you can copy and give to patients to use in the clinical setting. This is a very popular book in Australia amongst psychologists, psychiatrists and other mental health professionals. We have access to the full range of international CBT books but anecdotaly this is the most popular book in use. This book's only weakness is it lacks a chapter on PTSD.It has a good chapter on "first aid" after a traumatic event but not for treating PTSD as such.

5-0 out of 5 stars Must have for clinicians and students
This is a great Australian book on the cognitive-behavioural treatment of anxiety disorders. It is comprehensive in the topics it covers on each disorder, and practical to boot! The initial chapters are on general issues in dealing with anxiety disorders. Subsequent chapters cover panic disorder and agoraphobia, social phobia, specific phobias, OCD, and generalised anxiety disorder. For each of these disorders there is a chapter on the syndrome (what it is), treatment, a clinicians guide to treating the disorder, and a patient treatment manual. The patient manual is particularly useful and can be photocopied from the book to be used in clinical settings. Well worth a look. ... Read more

As a person who suffered from OCD, I read the author's book "Brainlock" and received much help, in fact, I found it the best self-help book I've ever read, and I've read several, for people suffering from OCD.As a psychiatrist in helping people with OCD, he is at the top of his field, but as a writer on the functions of the brain, he is a pseudo-scientist.In "The Mind and the Brain", he takes the unscientific position of "the ghost in the machine".His position is that we have free will to change ourselves inspite of the inclinations of our brains.I don't disagree with this, but I believe that it is not a ghost in the machine that has the free will, it is you.I believe that you are the brain and the brain is you. They are one and the same.If part of the brain, the caudate nucleus, is stuck in gear and keeps you obsessing, another part of your brain, the volitional part, can overide the caudate nucleus and resist giving into the urge to perform the compulsions. In doing so, the caudate nucleus will strengthen and become better at changing gears to other behaviors.Schwartz denies that one part of the brain can overide another part, but to me this is a more logical explanation than that the self is a non-physical entity. How would such a non-physical entity come about? How would it evolve? How can non-matter act on matter?Schwartz explains this through quantum mechanics.Although I'm not an expert on quantum mechanics, I understand there are experts in the field of physics that disagree with his version of quantum mechanics.

4-0 out of 5 stars Neurointellegentdesignism?
I really do like this book. The story is compelling and the amount of information presented is prodigious. Like other reviewers have stated the writing can be a little hard to wade through but I think the concepts given make it worth the effort.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Abyss in the Middle of the Bridge
The long journey from the physical molecules to the non-physical mind starts with a first step. Squire and Kandel have taken that first step in a masterful attempt to bridge the certainty of their laboratory measurements of brain function with the elusive, receding, transfinite virtuality of the human mind at the other end of the bridge. Notwithstanding their announced warning that "We are not who we are simply because we think. We are who we are because we can remember what we have thought about", the authors stick to the experimental facts. Perhaps the statement was meant as a red herring bait for the reductionists or an echo of "The Remembered Present" theory of Edelman about consciousness. The book is a no nonsense abridged laboratory report. The authors start at the beginning and move up the spiralcase of complexity one step at a time in an impressive 'show and tell' scientific act. Their rendition of memory research is credible, convincing and extremely well written; a must for students of neuro-molecular biology or the cognitive sciences. 5-0 out of 5 stars A riveting book, and a quick summary of current thinking
This compact book draws a circle around the small kernelof facts neuroscientists have accumulated about memory. The book iscurrent to within the last couple of years -- a quick way to bringyourself up to date. Read more
