5-0 out of 5 stars Rare combination of hard science and a great read
While you may have read books that similarly describe genes and brain development, you will not find one that presents a better, more comprehensive or concise explanation.Marcus offers a short overview of current trends in genetics, neurology, microbiology, linguistics and psychology as well as presenting some of the most intriguing contemporary philosophical discussions. Through this book Marcus presents the hard-science arguments that are now shaping main-stream views about genetics and brain development without sensationalizing, overly speculating, or including entertaining personal anecdotes and diversions - common problems in popular science books about the brain.
2-0 out of 5 stars A whole lot of repitition and very few illustrations
Buy this book if you have avid interest in the role of DNA in the formation of the brain/mind. From a layman's perspective, I should add that, there are very few books on this topic that are at this level of simplicity. So the choice is limited if you want to know something about the subject without getting stopped by the science wall.
5-0 out of 5 stars very good recent information
I didn't plan on reading this book but it jumped into my hands, and I couldn't put it down. I already knew a lot about the topic, being a fan of Richard Dawkins and Stephen Pinker. But it was filled with great descriptions of fascinating lab work, which really pulled me in.

2-0 out of 5 stars comprehensive butjumbled
This is one of the landmark Measurement books for Psychologists. It does present a relatively comprehensive treatment of the issues facing researchers when developing measures.Unfortunately, the style of writing used in the book makes it exceedingly difficult for students to extract the useful information from the chapters.Specifically, the chapters are not particularly well organized - particularly the ones with fewer equations in them - often jumping back and forth between topics rather than presenting them more systematically.Furthermore, the prose explaning concepts and equations is basically written in an overly complex and sometimes cryptic style more appropriate for mathematicians and psychologists from the 1950's than for graduate students or modern consumers.I only bought the book to augment the graduate level measurement class that I teach and despite the fact that I have a solid background in mathematics, I grown inwardly every time I have to pick up a chapter in this book and read it.

3-0 out of 5 stars get the 2nd edition
I am in a management PhD program and we have to read this book for our required class in psychometric theory. I totally agree with one of the other reviewers that almost no term is clearly defined by Nunnally and Bernstein in this 3rd edition. The book goes on and on and on talking about validity, reliability, scaling, ... without defining any single term in a concise manner. It is very frustrating!
2-0 out of 5 stars The material may be good, but it's tough to get through
I'm in a Ph.D. program, and this is the required reading for our psychometric test.I was looking on the Border's web site to find a different book to read that would cover the same material, that would not be so difficult to understand.Nunally has a nasty habit of poorly defining terms, which makes it extremely difficult to grasp what he is talking about. It's challenging enough to understand psychometric theory, let alone with a practically illegible textbook! This book needs rewriting!I've given it two stars because supposedly the book contains a lot of valuable material.Of course, this doesn't matter one whit when you can't even read the darn thing!

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Book on Energy Psychology
This is an excellent, well written, and easy-to-read book that goes into the history, theory, research, and applications of a fascinating new approach to psychological treatment called energy psychology. While the concepts and treatments are in the alternative realm, obviously Gallo is highly knowledgeable about traditional psychological approaches, since he discusses in some depth other scientific models, including cognitive-behavioral therapy, neuroscience, neurochemistry, systemic concepts, etc.Additionally a well-balanced approach to the science and research is evident, since the various studies on energy psychology (and even prayer and acupuncture) are discussed in terms of their adherence to sound research methodology. The book also covers valuable information on quantum physics, recent findings in biology, acupuncture, applied kinesiology, and more.I've used some of the techniques covered and precisely outline in the book and they appear to be incredibly effective in removing phobias, trauma, depressed feelings, and even chronic pain. This second edition significantly expanded on the earlier work. Even though the book is relatively costly, it's worth every penny and more.

1-0 out of 5 stars Pseudoscience and delusions
After close examination of this text, I conclude that from a Chinese/western medical perspective that this book is an attempt to make pseudoscience look convincing in order to support the marketing campaign of the authors. From a position of Chinese medicine and medical physiology expertise, they have failed.
5-0 out of 5 stars Rapid therapy and self help
This is an amazing concept! Most approaches to therapy take time and a lot of effort,I've parcticed psychodynamic, cognitive and behavioral approaches with some success, but the time and effort needed is arduous. This approach is really different. You simply have the client think about the problem, rate the level of distress, and tap on prescribed pressure points on the body. The result is an elimination of the distress.Distress includes any troublesome emotion: anger, grief, guilt feeling, jealousy, anxiety, phobic reaction, panic, etc.The results also last and there is an obvious cognitive shift in how the person perceives the issue from then on.For example, the movement is from anger to forgiveness, anxiety to calm and confidence, guilt to self forgiveness and acceptance, trauma to it's over and done with. This approach is needed in EVERY THERAPIST's repetoir.Eventually all good therapists will incorporate this approach in what they do to help clients. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars An analysis of Freud
Freud: brilliant and flawed, and without whom we'd have none of his detractors. We can see the ways Freud was a "poor" therapist. Some of his treatment styles would now be considered, at best, amoral; at worst, illegal. But he is essential to the foundation of psychotherapy.Without his theories (and opponents), we wouldn't have it at all.He is a fascinating, great scientist and innovator. His focus, also, is borne of its time, Victorian, and many of his theories predicated on from where *he* comes and what he saw in his patients - repression, for example.5-0 out of 5 stars Through a glass darkly
It's Dora's Sapphic longings for Frau K the guileful force in this brief but brilliant tour-de-force. In 1900 Sigmund Freud writes in his puzzling 'Dora an Analysis of a Case of Hysteria' that a girl of eighteen appears in his consulting office in Vienna suffering from insomnia aphonia and a nagging cough. Soon the celebrated psychoanalyst sets out in a search that would pale Sherlock Holmes. A shady psychiatric personae soon unfold. The doctoral sleuth is suspicious Dora's sexual wanting of her father, a prosperous industrialist, is at the root of her chronic sore throat bewilderment compulsive cough and general listlessness. But on the couch a fascinating couple promptly enter en scene. It's Herr K (dramatic cast is known only in code) a satyr-cuckold making sexual passes at Dora. His wife Frau K is meanwhile carrying a surreptitious affair with Dora's father, thus, at first, to Freud, Dora's rival. After some painful analysis and the interpretation of two dreams Freud soon reveals, with the elan of a seasoned novelist, the elusive dark truth. Sigmund Freud has found another alarming psychiatric discovery. The clever naturalist can now triumphantly prick his pin through his butterfly. In Tennessee Willaims' 'Cat on a Hot Tin Roof' the disclosure of the protagonist's forbidden homosexual urges is the key in a hushed but healing ending. In Williams' morbid 'Suddenly Last Summer' it's the savage recollection of Sebastian's voracious pederasty that explode in a healing and stunning finale. At last bringing catharsis to the heroine's temporary madness. Through a glass darkly. But this moral transcendence is not allowed Dora since she flees her psychoanalysis before there can be any hope of cure. Her denouement only another greedy trance in Freud's vast mind. Dora exists forum prematurally but her analyst has discovered nevertheless that in her psychic androgyny it was the languid Frau K Dora truly desired. Please notice how I contrast 'An Analysis of a Case of Hysteria' with dark poetic cinema since I find in Dora moving thematic potential. As a visionary I've weighed this intoxicating Freudian allure for the screen. Though Freud closes with a vague explanation one never really knows what happened to Dora. I've picked up Freud not always successfullyfinding 'The Interpretation of Dreams' lengthly episodic and often inscrutable (my fault not Freud's) Though have enjoyed 'Totem and Taboo' 'The Future of an Illusion' etc. In luckily finding 'Dora' I knew I had discovered a literary masterpiece a rare blend of medical writing doubling as genial whodunit. If you like mysteries this is the text for you Sigmund Freud's unforgettable study on bisexuality. Poor Fraulein Dora, like Racine's Phaedre, coughing and moaning and gasping and sighing a slave to a lust in where there can't be a happy ending. It doesn't tale long to read this little book great for trains or seashore. A few unique pages filled with excitement. I often wonder whether Dora really existed or was a figment in Freud's fancy. Elementary! lets give Dora five stars.

5-0 out of 5 stars what can I say, it's Freud!
He's wordy, difficult to read at times, and seems to think of women as hysterical children, but when Freud's theories and analysis is more deeply studied, one is able to appreciate his brilliance and insight. His work is revolutionary and remains a cornerstone of modern therapy."Dora" is a deeply affecting case study about a sad young woman who is caught between the needs of her father, her mother, her father's lover, and the older man who covets her.The study provides valuable insight into why teenagers living in tumultuous homes develop attachment problems and risky behavior. It's definitely worth reading. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Fascinating and brilliant
This is my favorite book! It's fantastic! You can't put it down and the stories stay with you for years. You can pick it up in any chapter and it's quite funny as well. Beautifully written.

5-0 out of 5 stars I want Oliver Sacks to be my doctor
Oliver Sacks' "The Man Who Mistook His Wife For A Hat" is an incredible and fascinating book--I highly recommend it.The book is divided into a number of stories/clinical tales about various patients Dr. Sacks has seen over the years who have exhibited strange symptoms or ailments due to damage in the right hemisphere of the brain (his summary of the differences between the left and right sections of the brain, and how the disorders of the right half have not been given nearly enough attention by the medical community, is also really interesting). All of the stories caught my attention, but "The Disembodied Lady" was probably the most disturbing.Dr. Sacks is a neurologist who not only knows what he is talking about when it comes to medicine, but he is also deeply committed to his patients and their well-being.He is a humanist in every sense of the word.He is also a great writer--he can explain complicated medical conditions with the greatest of ease and such a sense of compassion. He also wrote the book "Awakenings" on which the movie with Robert DeNiro and Robin Williams is based.

5-0 out of 5 stars You would have to be crazy not to like this book...
And even then, you have a very good chance of appreciating the amount of insight that Dr. Oliver Sacks has into the minds and lives of his patients, and into life and the human condition in general. Sacks, both the author and the narrator in this book, has chosen some of his favorite, poignant, and exemplary cases from the many patients he has worked with in his home for those with neurological disorders (or, more romantically, a home for those who see the world in a completely different way.). Not only does he describe the disease and condition of the patient, he describes the life, the person, behind the disease. In some cases, he also updates the information he has with the specific patient, i.e., what the patient has gone on to do, or not to do, with their life.

4-0 out of 5 stars Can hallucinations explain reality?
What does holotropic mean? The dictionary does not define the term, and neither does the author, although he has developed an entire psychiatric treatment and trademarked it as the "Holotropic Breathwork." If we compare it to the meaning of "allotropic" we can deduce that it should mean "of one form." But with one form with what? After reading the book I amguessing that it refers to the universe. Our mind is one with it. Purely a guess; the author does not tell us.
5-0 out of 5 stars Truth Seeker
A truely inspired journey through an emerging paradigm in consciousness research. This book is an absolute must read for anyone who has seen the futility of modern material science's need to relegate the mind to the status of a physical anomaly.

5-0 out of 5 stars VERY Technical, but extremely interesting!
Although it is obvious that this book was written more for other physicians and workers in the mental health profession (the vocabulary is quite advanced to say the least), I found each new chapter held something in it to help me learn more about the effects of trauma and the different outcomes of a traumatic childhood. I, having Dissociative Identity Disorder (formerly known as Multiple Personality Disorder) was relieved to read that I was not different in the fact that I had been diagnosed with almost everything and have been in and out of hospitals. I've also worked with the author's staff as well as his assistant and, although I'm not quite sure of my thoughts on his view of memories, I totally agree that memories are not the point. The point is that we wouldn't have problems if life had been bliss. I highly recommend this THICK book to anyone who, if they don't have a complex vocabulary, is willing to look up words as they go. (smile)

5-0 out of 5 stars The significance of trauma
In this landmark work, Dr. Ross challenges the field of psychiatry to make a giant leap forward in the treatment of mental illness. After 21 years of carefully listening to patients and weighing scientific evidence, he has hit on what should now be obvious: trauma causes and/or contributes to most psychiatric disorders. This is especially true for comorbid (many diagnosies) patients.Just as a single disease can produce multiple physical symptoms, unresolved trauma can generate multiple diagnosies. He describes why the single gene-single disease and biomedical reductionist models don't work for psychiatry. He also points out many flaws in logic in the DSM IV diagnosies, making specific revision suggestions. His hypothesies will pique the curiosity of many reseachers and lead to many dissertations. He concludes if trauma therapy is added to medication for many patients, outcomes will be much improved. This is a must read for the serious mental health professional. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Shay works from an intriguing premise: that the study of the great Homeric epic of war, The Iliad, can illuminate our understanding of Vietnam, and vice versa.Along the way, he compares the battlefield experiences of men like Agamemnon and Patroclus with those of frontline grunts, analyzes the berserker rage that overcame Achilles and so many American soldiers alike, and considers the ways in which societies ancient and modern have accounted for and dealt with post-traumatic stress disorder---a malady only recently recognized in the medical literature, but well attested in Homer's pages. The novelist Tim O'Brien, who has written so affectingly about his experiences in combat, calls Shay's book "one of the most original and most important scholarly works to have emerged from the Vietnam war." He's right. ... Read more

I have been trying to finish this book for several months - I find that I can only read it when I am in a certain "intellectual" frame of mind. The parallels that are drawn between the experience of Vietnam Vets and Homer's Achilles are valid. As a Social Worker who works closely with Vietnam Vets in group and individual therapy, I can certainly appreciate the points that are made in this book, and I do believe that it increases my own understanding of my Vietnam Vets. However, I don't think I could recommend this book to my Vietnam Vets to read because the amount of concentration that this book requires is a luxury that many of them do not have as the result of their PTSD.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Brilliant Marriage of the Liberal Arts and Social Science
Dr. Shaw is well-positioned to know about combat trauma:short of experiencing it first-hand, working as a doc in a VA hospital is as close to the action as it gets.As the author makes clear, the action never stopped for his patients, who remain in southeast Asia, in soul and spirit, decades after their bodies came home: It is the bodies of dead commerades that often haunt them and drive them to Dr. Shaw's practice.
4-0 out of 5 stars A great read

5-0 out of 5 stars I had sworn off flying for almost 6 years, until...
This book is amazing. I used to have paralyzing nightmares about plane crashes and had given up flying for almost 6 years. I swore to never fly again. I picked up this book, almost 2 months later I have flown 4 times and it gets easier each time. Please buy it..It's amazing I am telling you!

4-0 out of 5 stars Only cured while I'm reading the book...
This is actually a pretty good book, but it hasn't helped me overcome my fears. When I have anxiety about a flight - usually months in advance - I'll pick up this book and it helps. It doesn't help while I'm on the plane though. Of course, that's no fault of the book.
3-0 out of 5 stars Somewhat helpful
I have been a fearful flyer for over 15 yrs. There was some helpful information here but this is not the best book I have read about fearful flyers. The chapters tend to be somewhat boring and there is almost too much information. The best book I have read about fearful flyers is White Knuckles : Getting Over the Fear of Flying by Ridley, Layne- Her book is a scream!Although a bit outdated since it was published before the Sept. 11th attacks this lady takes a comical approach to this irrational fear and at the same time provides you with the necessary facts.I laughed out loud and I admit I felt much better after reading this book and ALMOST at ease on my flight from the west coast to the east coast and I had to change planes!

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding!
The book is great, and a "must have" for those who seek a better understanding of personality and its disorders. 5-0 out of 5 stars One man's personality disorder . . .
. . . is another man's path to riches, professional prestige, and social control.5-0 out of 5 stars The best book on personality disorders on the market !!!
There are few books in psychology that are as comprehensive in scope and detail as Dr. Millon's book. The book provides a solid, integrative theory of personality and personality disorders that can be used not only in research, but also clinical practice by psychologists from any theoretical orientation. Because it is so comprehensive, the book is especially useful for students. The first section of the book (approximately 200 pgs.) is dedicated to laying down a foundation for the study of personality disorders -- the issues that it entails and a concise (yet, detailed) review of various personality theories.Dr. Millon then presents a rational, integrated theory of personality that is the foundation of his integrated biopsychosocial approach to personality. The rest of the book is dedicated to a detailed examination of the DSM-IV personality disorders. This single book can serve as a primary text for any advanced course in personality. Whether one aggrees with Dr. Millon's theory (and few can disagree with it completely once they understand it's comprehensive and integrated nature), this book is one that anybody who deals with the personality disorders MUST have on their bookshelf. ...
