5-0 out of 5 stars The best introduction on the subject
I can't stress how reader friendly this book is.It is by far the best introduction on component analysis. It is written in such a way that those with a weaker math background can understand it while those with years of experience will not be bored, at certain times it even reads like a story.
5-0 out of 5 stars James Stone's monograph: 'Independent Component Analysis'
James Stone's monograph is a refreshing new book amongst the many other `new books' on Independent Component Analysis (ICA). The author brings his teaching experience to present the theory and practice of ICA in a highly accessible form using a duplication of words and straight-forward mathematics.
5-0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Introduction
Independent Component Analysis (ICA) is one of the emerging technologies that ever more powerful computers are becoming more available. Basically it is a set of mathematical techniques that are used to pull a little bit of information out of a large mass of data.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Ultimate Amygdala Book!!!
If you are interested in the amygdala, there are now many good books on the market, but this one is the best general overview I have found so far. It is both a good place to start in understanding what is currently known about the amygdala and a useful reference for more amygdala-experienced persons. It is too technical for the general reader, but understandable to anyone with a basic, college-level understanding of biopsychology and brain anatomy.

5-0 out of 5 stars Finally, Help for the Helper
Designed as help for the therapist, it is also appropriate, and may be as or more important, for helpers who happen to be mothers, spouses, children, or even friends who find themselves suffering from the personal after-effects of being around physical, mental, emotional or psychological trauma of others - acting as mediators, menders, negotiators, and/or reservoirs of the pain and troubles of others. They may also need to address their own baggage of current or distant pain caused by disruptive circumstances in their own past to complicate the difficulty of handling multiple sources of distress and stress. Seen frequently in domestic violence situations, or arising from elder or ailing parents, or in trying to accommodate severe illness in anyone close to them, long term stress becomes the distress of psychological trauma. It may or may not be recognized by others, at work, or by those who are in a position to give relief. It may or may not be a known fact within the family where caregivers rarely allow themselves to acknowledge being weak, or in needing services themselves. Left unattended, the helper may become the person needing help, often some time beyond the time that help is being given (in the form of an aftershock) which may or may not be seen as having come from overextending themselves in serving the needs of others. Rescuer's remorse, it might be called, to identify the time when caregiver's come to assess the harm done to themselves and the need for recovery. It usually follows burn out in time when adjustment and incentive may be lacking with the realization of being psychologically or emotionally spent as well as physically tired and fatigued. It also happens to children (when in orphan situations, or even in single parent families) where they have been a primary emotional carrier of siblings, or younger children, a source of support for siblings, or even parents, in daily or sporadic struggles of emotional trauma. Often, refusing to give in to the need they also require for care, support and affection, they develop an overdeveloped sense of the "atlas-syndrome" where they cannot allow themselves to give in, for recognizing their own weakness, realizing they may not have a resource to turn to in that event. In denial of their own weakness, they forge onward without acknowledging their need for affection and solace. While admirable, it is also self destructive, however necessary they feel it to be. Long term deprivation of their own needs can have difficult emotional, physical, emotional and educational ramifications in addition to social consequences inconsistent with their desires and their intention to attain their own extraordinarily high defensive standards. Failure of society to recognize this vulnerable class of persons usually means that they are misunderstood, devalued, and may be mis-classified as social misfits rather than the begrudging individuals they are who willingly adopt the problems of others, sometimes to their own detriment.

5-0 out of 5 stars overlooked area in counseling/human relations
This is a good introduction to "compassion fatique".For years we have known about burn out, but this is far more. The field is just now considering the possibility of secondary PTSD/O, but many of us, who have worked with trauma victims, have seen the signs of copassion fatique. As a supervisior, I have dealt with counselors and psychologists who work with trauma vitims who display copassion fatique.I recommend this book as start in the study of compassion fatique.

5-0 out of 5 stars Necessary in literature of compassion fatigue

4-0 out of 5 stars Ooops! There go the piano lessons
This is the book that got me interested, once again, in neuropsychology and neuroanatomy. Yes, the immediate interest is that business of not wanting "to go gently into that good night." as Dylan Thomas wrote. How much will cognitive delcine affect me as I age (something we are all doing since birth - it isn't only the old who are aging).
1-0 out of 5 stars seriously disappointed
I was unable to finish this book because I found it too academic and pedantic; it is of little use to elderly people who seek guidance in regard to the problems of agying

Plan of attack in releasing anger according to to this CD is by imaging your in a room with the person responsible and letting your anger go at them - didn't work with me only made things worse.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not for me.
I have never felt that I could participate well in guided visualizations. That is exactly what this CD is.If you visualize well and can imgaine well and summon raw emotions at someone else's mere suggestion, this may work well for you.But it doesn't for me.It just feels silly and like a waste of my time and money. This is not my modality.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fascinating Look at Harlow's Research
This is one of the most interesting and well written books I've ever read on this or any similar topic. To anyone who studies or has studied attachment, Blum offers an amazing look at how this early research changed the face of psychology. To anyone who has read countless poorly written descriptions of boring research studies, this book is an oasis.
4-0 out of 5 stars Great topic, lousy subject
This is an extremely interesting book in terms of underlining how damaging scientific fads can be.The early twentieth century fad of data and cleanliness may well have led to the deaths many children as cleanliness was preferred over attention.

5-0 out of 5 stars medication and andreason neuroscientist
As a society we face, is it medicine or out of my house. We have some knowledge of medicine but what we don't have is knowldege of what to do with our nations poor, we need to think about this.Walking is important for people on medications but they don't tell you about this. What they don't tell you is not to drink coffee's etc. Or that many over the counters in general are bad.Our knowledge continues to grow as a society, however, there are many things we don't know.Nancy C Andreason gives a good review of things, and a well rounded perspective of things in her Brave New Brain.I am interested in also her genetics research as well.I believe the NAMI which she has mentioned is not the best helping organization though, and there is not much outside support or resources to help disabeled people which I think we need more of, when they don't have there families anymore. We need to think about how we are going to house homeless etc.

5-0 out of 5 stars Liberating Book of Facts
Having experienced schizophrenia firsthand in my immediate family beginning in the 1950s, I was interested in seeing what medical explanations are being explored and what progress has been made regarding this devastating illness. This book beautifully presents necessary background data on brain function and on basic chemistry and genetics, and then gives lucidly presented information about new strategies and treatments. Various fields of medicine, genetics, and chemistry are coming together to present the real albeit complex picture of what these awful illnesses are about and how we can work to live with them or overcome them. Mental illness must be liberated from individual guilt, shame, and social stigma, which are still very strong in human society. Only knowledge of the facts can free us from these crippling attitudes, and this terrific book goes a long way to help. The author's PhD in literature also adds a humanistic touch to a scientific work, which I deeply appreciated.
5-0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Overview of the Genetics of Mental Illness
Nancy Andreasen is one of the top researchers in the field of Schizophrenia so is a good person to write this book. This is a very good book on the underlying causes of schizophrenia and other brain diseases and prospects better treatments and cures based on this knowledge.Great reading for a person who wants a better understanding of how the genetics revolution is impacting our knowledge of mental illness.Writen for a layman with some background or interest in science and biology. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Explanation of Alcoholism Neurochemistry and Genetics, Reward Deficiency Syndrome, AlcoholMetabolism , Craving
Alcohol and the Addictive Brain is possibly the best publishedexplanation ofgenetic and neurochemical causes of alcohol dependence, withdrawal and craving. This book explains how genetically susceptible individuals, differ neurochemicallyfrom nonalcoholics, and how alcohol alters dopamine, GABA, serotonin, norepinephrine and opiate neurotransmitter and neurotransmitter receptor levels.Inherited differences in P300 brainwaves are thoroughly explained. The history of alcohol neurotransmitter research is reported, objectively, with fair consideration given to opposing views. This book is surprisingly readable, considering the complexity of the research it explains.Enkephalinase inhibition treatments, which Blum has refined, are an especially promising possibility for reducing alcohol craving and dependence. The explanation of transformation of alcohol to acetaldehyde, and subsequently to beta carboline, tetrahydroisoquinolines, morphine, codeine and other opiates, remains useful today and helps explain why naltrexone and accupuncture can reduce alcohol craving and consumption.
5-0 out of 5 stars At last a methodologically rigorous study of alcoholism
I first acquired this book shortly after it was published in 1991, and I have now been continuously sober for over eleven years. The hypothesis that alcoholism is an empirically identifiable neurochemical imbalance in thebrain is still met with strong resistance by drunks, moralists and manytherapists. Unfortunately for these sometimes vocal critics, Blum and Paynepresent compelling laboratory evidence that it is as much a neurologicaldisorder as Parkinson's or epilepsy. ... Read more

Why do we find it hard to explain why art is beautiful? Perhaps it is because the visual system of the human brain is much more developed than its language centers, as it has had far longer--millions of years--to evolve. Semir Zeki believes that we can only reach a better understanding of art as we learn more about the operations of the visual brain. Read more

Neuroscientists have for a long been looking inside the brain to understand its function. Semir Zeki, in this book proposes the unconventional idea of looking into the most beautiful products of brain, visual art of instance, to understand the functioning of brain. Citing examples of Shakesphere and Wagner, he goes further to propose that some artists might be thought of as neurologists, "for they at least did know how to probe the mind of humans with the techniques of language and of music and understood perhaps better than most what it takes to move the mind of human". By showing the striking features of the patients studied by himself and others, he gives compelling evidence that vision is not a singular process and there are parts of brain that are dedicated to various functions such as color, form, motion etc. He writes about patients who have damaged a part of the visual brain (V4) and sees the world in dark shades of grey. Similarly, patients with damage in V5 neither see nor understand motion. They only see discontinuous static images. They for instance cannot see the rising level of a drink in a glass and the drink always overflows. Then he describes a patient with damage to a certain region in cortex, who cannot recognize faces. This person can visualize lines and objects but simply cannot recognize faces. All of these abilities that seem so simple and effortless to all of us normal people -- it's only when something goes wrong we realize how extraordinarily subtle the mechanisms of vision really are and how complexly integrated a process it really is.
2-0 out of 5 stars this has little to do with art
as someone with a doctorate in psychology who has retired to a life of intensive painting, i can say this book falls short in its fundamental premise: if we can identify a distinct visual capability in the brain, that capability forms the basis for visual esthetic judgments. that argument unfortunately goes nowhere, and the result is a thin book with its substantive content spread even thinner.5-0 out of 5 stars Stimulating, honest and inspiring
"Fresh air" is the best definition of Sekis book on art and brain. Innovative for neuroscientists and artists, it proposes acomprehensive, yet speculative (i.e., stimulating), vision onneuroaestethics. You wont read neither a neurosciences book, nor an artone. Its both... and more. ... Read more
