4-0 out of 5 stars Very interesting overview of current research in the subject
The collection of articles in this book gives a fascinating overview of human musical cognition and how it is modeled computationally. It also addresses the effect of brain lesions or abnormalities on musical competence and abilities, and thus gives the reader a taste of the kind of research that is being done in current research circles in the cognitive neuroscience of music. It is readily apparent after reading the articles that much is known about musical cognition, but there are many questions yet to answer. Because of space constraints, only a few of the articles will be reviewed here.

5-0 out of 5 stars The arcane made accessible
On the surface, the book seems focused on computers and even video games. This makes the activities appealing for middle and high school students. However, the ideas in this book are actually relevant to two entirely different fields:1) genetics, and 2) artificial intelligence. Both these fields have at their centers the concept of complexity arising out of simplicity.Students who work their way though the activites in this book will find that Dr. Resnick offers a window into a deep mathematical world that has applications far beyond computers and games.
4-0 out of 5 stars Great Starting Point in Agent based Modelling
Mitchel Resnick shares a lovely sense of wonder, discovery and fascination in this slim, easily read volume about agent based modelling.Using micro-worlds (termites, ants and other modelling metaphors) Resnick shows us how collective behaviours are more than a simple sum of the parts - and through his experiments using StarLogo programming he shows the nature of emergent behaviours that come through decentralised thinking.
3-0 out of 5 stars interesting, but describes an old version of the software
This is a book describing the research of a team at MIT using a version of the educational language "Logo". Running in a simple graphical environment which supports multiple parallel operation of code in the same shared space. Write a few lines of code for an "ant", then let 1000 of them loose. The current version of this "StarLogo" system is written in Java, and available as a free download for anyone to play with.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good overview of the field
The chapters in this book are written by some of the most influential emotion researchers of the last decennia. Different angles are presented throughout the sections. As such it is a good addition to psychology researchers who want to have an overview of the field.

Encouraging/building a sense of hope and agency is important for cases of depression. Unfortunately, the book has a noticeable slant toward political correctness and left-wing politics that seem to overemphasize the"mascot" groups and hot topics of the Left at the expense of the rest.Read more

Truly a superb work of detailed analysis and fact.Dr. Feinberg's astute knowledge of his subject matter makes this work an impressive necessity for any bookshelf for all professionals and those, like myself who are personalinjury attorneys, to be able to understand neurological function anddisorder.Bravo!

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent up-to-date text
Feinberg and Farah have edited a clear, comprehensive text for those interested in the neurological side of neuropsychology. If you want just one neuropsych. book - this is it! Including all the basics together with some areas seldom covered in texts of this type, well illustrated, and without obfuscation, this book discusses many disorders, syndromes and mental functions; the etiology of disorders, the history and rationale underlying models and testing.Suitable for the graduate student or professional neuropsychologist, and attractively produced. This is an excellent book. It provides 'state of the art and science' information about past and emerging work in emotioanl intelligence and competencies. I highly recommend it.

4-0 out of 5 stars If you are serious about learning the background to E.I.
The Handbook of Emotional Intelligence is a must read for anyone who is serious about emotional intelligence.Through this book, Bar-On and Parker have brought together a world-class collection of academics, psychologists and researchers. Before the Handbook was written, researchers and practitioners who wanted to get to the bottom of emotional intelligence needed to look up thousands of sources to even start their research.Bar-On and Parker have completed a sterling effort - the chapters include hundreds of research studies and the links are made between many different strands of research on intelligence and emotion and they are brought together in a 'tome' of useful information. This book is not a light piece of bedtime reading. It is a text book which should be on the shelf of anyone who wants to hear direct from the key researchers who have helped to create the field of Emotional Intelligence, so well popularised by Daniel Goleman in his book 'Emotional Intelligence'. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best!
I own literally dozens of books on ADHD and have read dozens more. This slim book (only about 125 pages) is absolutely one of the best.I ordered it on the recommendation of a friend and when it arrived I was disappointed to see such a thin book. How could it add anything I didn't already know?Well, it did!It sums up the latest in scientific approaches to ADHD, de-bunks the myths and presents it all as clearly and concisely as I have ever seen.An excellent investment!

4-0 out of 5 stars Great addition to other books
I found this book to reinforce some of the concepts described in the book 'On Intelligence' and there are also great informative additions.Johnson has a fairly dry but fluid style in his description of some major ideas including what contributes to our shown and felt emotions. One study he describes is Duchenne's in which it was determined that a genuine smile can be seen in the eyes (the orbicularis oculi) as much as in the mouth. When a person genuinely smiles, he or she crinkles their brow whereas a fake smile lacks that action.
4-0 out of 5 stars Head stoved in with bricks
Having read 'Everything Bad Is Good For You' by the same author straight through in under one week, my expectations were set suitably high for this book. It is, however, one of those books that is hard to read more than a paragraph at a time as there is so much to take in; lots of scientific terms, data, theories - revelations even. Essentially, it's about how technology can be used to improve the performance of the human brain by creating a clearer understanding of how the different areas, chemicals, neurons, etc. interact to create, well, our everyday view of the world. A new insight into the inner workings of the mind.
4-0 out of 5 stars mind mostly expanded
a mostly engaging and illuminating read that is like having a stimulating conversation with a good friend. The author has an elegant and intelligent style that smoothly explains heady material in a comfortable manner. There is much to be gleaned from this brief, but informative book. It goes well with Undoing Yourself with Energized Meditation. Both are effective tools to re-work the human brain.

5-0 out of 5 stars Phyiscs and Consciousness
Physics and consciousness are hot topics in the quantum community and this book goes on to correlate between the outside reality (physical) and the inside reality (spiritual) It gives you a new way of looking at reality and to understand that different planes of realities exist. This is an excellent book.
4-0 out of 5 stars Thoughtful, but sometimes misleading.
Evan Harris Walker has written an entirely different book than you may have expected from reading the title.Certainly, the book discusses all of what is included in the title, but with a trifle more sophistication than I had expected.Readers who are not already familiar with thinking about Quantum Theory and philosophy of mind will probably find the book a rough ride. While Walker takes pains to explain the concepts, his are not certainly not the clearest available.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Book for ALL People, not only Vets
Ed Tick's book is not for Vets alone...this powerful book is a must read for ALL of us. Even those of us who have not felt the direct impacts of war (especially in the U.S.) are affected by it; war is an archetypal energy that exists in history, in the now, and more personally, in us all. With Afghanistan, Iraq, and now Israel close on their heels, war is a painful reality we cannot ignore. And, this moment in our history is a golden opportunity to delve deep into the shadowy subject of war and its very real effects on a global and personal scale. That said, Ed's book brought this war/warrior energy home for me, both dark and light. He masterfully retells the stories of people you and I would know, in addition to painting a picture of the roots of war/warrior and opening a path of healing for Vets and non-Vets alike...for all human beings. After reading War and the Soul, I will always look at war differently, feel compassion for soldiers/warriors, and personally be more aware of the little and not so visible wars that we as human beings wage in ourselves and in our everyday lives. I also am more aware of the warrior in me. Awareness is power, and in this case, the power to fight as a warrior would for peace and healing. Thank you, Ed. This book touched my heart and brought tears that needed to be shed.

3-0 out of 5 stars Intense
I have not finished reading this book as it is very graphic and emotional. I might be worth 5 stars when I finish but I have to get away from it for a while and only read it in pieces.

5-0 out of 5 stars Growing Our Soul
Dr. Edward Tick's new book War and the Soul will have a tremendous impact on the treatment of PSTD. Before his ground breaking book, the treatment for PTSD was learning to cope with the symptoms and medication. For Tick healing involves growing the soul big enough to carry the traumatic wounds. He also brings PTSD beyond the individual to a national disorder. "We speak of the soul of a nation. Is PTSD our country's soul sickness?"

5-0 out of 5 stars So fascinating!
If only my reviews could be as interesting as this book, but then maybe if I didn't buy so many books, I'd have more time to include the details on what makes such books as this so wonderful to own.One detail I remember from Kotulak's writing is the information on how the brain fixes itself. When in "formal" school, I was taught so many things that simply were not true.I'm so happy to learn that things I suspected as truth (which went contrary to what was being taught) are now being discovered (or should I say "uncovered"?) as the way things really are.

4-0 out of 5 stars Must read for parents
A very informative book shedding light on cognitive developement especially in children, but also expanding into violence and recovery after injuries inflicted on the brain. A great stepping stone into a very fascinating subject. The book is slightly repetitive thus the missing star, but don't worry it is still very readable.

5-0 out of 5 stars Section 1: A must for new Parents, Grandparents, and Teacher
Section 1 is presented in an easy, non-technical way that permits any person keen on helping develop the young mind, develop it to its maximum capacity.Research is well documented. Educators should be guided by such presentations in the ways school curricula are designed. The sections on brain injury and healing are a little more technical, but point to a very exciting short term future in addressing neruological problems. The concluding remarks refocus the reader on just how important very early and continuous education is important to us. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A fascinating collection of articles
Which brain mechanisms are involved in the typical social interactions that humans engage in everyday life? To what extent are these interactions determined by the dynamical processes in the human brain? Are there separate areas or modules in the brain responsible for these interactions, and what happens when these modules become dysfunctional? These questions, along with many more, are addressed in this collection of articles, which are written for experts in cognitive neuroscience. However, non-experts, such as this reviewer, can profit from a perusal of the articles, even if they have only an understanding of the basic rudiments of cognitive neuroscience. Only twenty-six of these articles were read by this reviewer, and for lack of space just a few of these will be reviewed here.
