5-0 out of 5 stars Must Read Cutting Edge Scientific Thinking About Epilepsy
I am a physician with a personal interest in epilepsy. (I am neither a primary care provider nor a neurologist)
5-0 out of 5 stars FROM ONE OF THE AUTHORS AND CO-EDITOR
The co-editors of this medical textbook, Drs. Rho (UC-Irvine), Sankar (UCLA) and myself (UTHSCSA) are among the few clinician-scientists in the field of epilepsy. The textbook aims to bridge the gap between scientific developments in research laboratory (bench) with the insights obtained at the bedside caring for thousands of patients with epilepsy. The textbook is unique in many aspects, including: 1) the selection of contributing authors, who are young investigators or at mid-career, and 2) the provocative nature of their discussion.Authors were asked to describe the scientific foundation of their area of expertise, but also to provide educated insights about potential future developments. The book is divided in six sections: I) Scientific Foundations (3 chapters), II)Antiepileptic Drugs (5 chapters), III) Epilepsy Surgery (3 chapters), IV) Alternative Therapies (5 chapters), V) Other Modulators of the Epileptic State (3 chapters), and VI) The Future of Epilepsy Therapy (5 chapters).Advances in epilepsy have come from many fields in anatomy, biophysics, genetics, molecular biology, neuroscience, pharmacology, etc.We are hoping that this book will educate physicians, health care providers, and investigators increasing their Scientific Foundations to improve Clinical Practice in Epilepsy.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars This book saved my life.
I am trying not to cry while writing this review because of the incredible impact this great work of Judith Herman has had on my life.I first read the book 4 years ago (I was 19 at the time), at the suggestion of my therapist.Today it remains one of only two books on the topic that I have kept.I will never let go of this book.
5-0 out of 5 stars Saved My Life
First let me say that this is NOT a "self-help" book and should not be purchased as such.As most of the other reviews here will attest, it is a wonderful book for therapists, clergy, or other professionals who work with survivors of trauma. It is also wonderful for anyone who is having difficulty understanding why a battered woman doesn't "just leave" her abuser (read about "Stockholm Syndrome" and traumatic bonding). It is a clear and easy read, but it is an educational book, not a self-help book.It was required reading in my college Crisis Intervention class, but it also helped me understand that I was not "crazy" for feeling the way I felt after living through an abusive relationship myself.I found that learning about the abuser/victim or captor/captive relationship was very empowering and normalizing for me and was an important step in my own recovery from captivity.I was amazed by the commonalities between domestic abuse, hostage situations, and living as a POW.If you are someone who helps people overcome this type of trauma, please read this book and teach them about the research that has been done.Help them realize that what they are going though is normal, that it was not due to their own personality flaws or weaknesses that they did not "just leave", and that, above all, they are not crazy.
4-0 out of 5 stars A Reader's Review
Trauma and Recovery: The Aftermath of Violence-from Domestic Abuse to Political Terror by Judith Herman, M.D. is a book that puts together not only how victims of trauma have historically received care but also constructs a practical paradigm for providing care for the traumatized in today's world.

2-0 out of 5 stars Just Okay
This book had some good aspects about it (practice questions, info about taking the test). However I don't feel like it prepared me at all to take the test, so quite frankly it wasn't worth the money.Your best bet is to review a little bit of everything you learned in grad school & if your program prepared you enough you'll pass. Good luck

2-0 out of 5 stars Almost...but not quite
While this book addresses all of the cognitive processes needed to take the test, as well as the types of questions the Praxis test MAY have, I found the typographical errors and editing oversights to be distracting. Particularly frustrating examples of this occurred in answer key to the sample test. As I was reviewing, I found that the explanations of some correct answers did not correspond with the letter given as correct. It made me question how many of the others that I did NOT scrutinize, had the same problem. While the book provides insight into the construction of the Praxis test itself, which was helpful, in the end, I did not feel that it boosted my confidence in my preparedness in any way. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Look back to look forward.
Authors who write about debt and getting out of it, overspending and overcoming it, tend to fall into two categories: there is the P.E. coach who is going to whip you into shape, shout to you that you can do one more crunch, and perhaps throttle you if you screw up.
5-0 out of 5 stars Wise advice from a compassionate expert
The reader who said the exercises in "Overcoming Overspending" are ridiculous does not want to examine his/her feelings about money.I have worked on many of the exercises and have found them enormously helpful with my own compulsive spending issues.Overspending is such a widespread problem now that a number of useful books have been written on the subject.Olivia Mellan's book shows gives readers the benefit of her years as a professional money counselor.Readers will find it well worth their time and thoughtful contemplation.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent!
I can't say enough good things about this book.It has helped my husband and me enormously. But for the book to work, I think you have to truly want to change your spending habits as individuals and as a couple and commit to the exercises.Skimming it (as the reviewer below did, to his or her disappointment) and hoping for magic is not going to bring about change.Let me just give a couple of examples from our experience with the book ....For my wonderful husband (a classic overspender) and me (a chronic underspender aka penny pincher), money was the one thing we argued about.I dreaded Christmas because my husband would buy loads of expensive presents, certainly many more than I wanted--and we'd spend the months after paying off debts. He tended to make impulsive purchases and frequently ate out.Over time, with the help of this wise book, we learned to make changes and capitalize on our strengths as a couple.I took over financial matters, we set up a budget, we commited to savings, we considered purchases carefully and went into stores at Christmas with a list to avoid impulsive purchases. Most importantly we learned how our childhoods, especially the models of our own parents, contributed to our present money woes.Getting a handle on our money issues, helped us move forward in other areas of our lives:having a child and considering adopting another, buying a new car, investing, saving for a house. So the book does work--if you're willing to invest the effort to change! ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Our Frontal Lobes Is Us
As I write this I'm listening to the Harvard Class Day on the day before their commencement ceremony. It's raining heavily. The undergraduates are making each other laugh, rehashing their high school valedictorian address by changing a line here and there, reviewing their experiences during the last four years, pumping themselves up to make something of their lives after Harvard.
4-0 out of 5 stars The Executive Brain
The Executive Brain
2-0 out of 5 stars Selected Memoirs of a Neuropsychologist
Sorry, but I found the book disappointing. The author notes in the first few pages the book is "an idiosyncratic account of my own understanding of several central issues of cognitive neuroscience and of the personal context that let me to write about it" and that's an understatement. Highly personal and very idiosyncratic are the watchwords. If you are looking to gain an understanding of the frontal lobes and executive functions you will find this book comes up short. Zero attempt is made to provide even highlights of the most necessary topics, or even a cursory and minimally sufficient survey of well-accepted research in this area. At best you have a few good points raised. Even those however are difficult to distinguish from personal bias and preference.

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent resource
in its second edition, this is an excellent resource for clinicians working with folks with anger problems as well as directly for individuals with anger problems and their loved ones.it is written very practically.i didn't find nonsense. it is straightforward, telling it like it is, challenging those with anger problems to examine and change things without arousing the supersensitivity characteristic of those with anger problems.it includes information for loved ones, too.a very practical outline of anger-related topics and helpful exercises, i've already gotten very positive feedback from clients (actually their wives so far).it is a book that i intend to share with other clients.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic, Straight - Forward Book!!!
I must admit this is the first anger management book I have ever read. I read it due to the great reviews it was given. I WAS NOT disappointed!! This book is WONDERFUL!! It is written in plain, straight forward English. There are no big psychological words that you can't understand. If you want to read a book that actually TELLS you something about WHY you get angry and how to CONTROL it, then this book is FOR YOU! While I was reading, I felt as if the author had actually come to my house and observed me for a few weeks and then written this book about me! Another great thing about this book is that is not long to read and it gets to the point. I could not put it down! If you're really tired of being "angry all the time", please read this book....you WON'T be disappointed!!!

3-0 out of 5 stars Anger is not always just an invitation to be declined.
I received this book from my chronically angry father. I did read it from cover to cover, and indeed it has some good hints on dealing with anger, and I think especially for the person who rages out of control, often for no or little reason. At the end of chapter one, which lists the 'slices' of life: work, family, money, the law etc, it says 'if you fill up even one of these slices this book is for you'. It was nice to know that I don't fill up any of those slices. Even thoughthere ARE good suggestions on how to cool down while angry, how to more calmly communicate your anger etc, it seems that it is very strong on dissuading anger.
