5-0 out of 5 stars Incredible informative pocketguide for SLP's!
Wonderful guide and so easy to read.Very concise and easy to flip to the exact disorder you are wondering how to treat or assess! One of the best SLP books I have!

5-0 out of 5 stars I know the techniques work from personal experience
The author of this book also happens to be my speech therapist. I suspect he's been using these treatments on me, and they've been working. To the snake oil guy: if there is any bias in this book, it is towards effectiveness. Unlike mentalistic psychology (believe me, we've had endless arguments about mentalism vs. behavioralism), Dr. Hegde tries to use the scientific method to approach any number of communicative disorders. The treatments are based in the scientific method, and are, by definition, verifiable, repeatable, and emperical. No mentalism here!

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Reference
This is an excellent resource for a practicing speech-language pathologist in any setting. It quickly reminds you of all of the things you learned in graduate school, but have since forgotten. It is much easier to look up information here than to dig through all of your old textbooks and notes. I am shocked that Amazon even printed the earlier review giving this text only one star. The reviewer did not write a review of this book. He simply attacked the entire field of speech-language pathology. ... Read more

Editorial Review

A middle-aged neuroscientist walking down Bourbon Street spots a T-shirt that reads, "I don't know, so maybe I'm not." This stimulus zooms from eyes to brain, neuron by neuron, via tiny junctions called synapses. The results? An immediate chuckle and (sometime later) a groundbreaking book titledRead more

3-0 out of 5 stars We Are Our Synapses?!
"Synaptic Self" is a worthy follow up on LeDoux's seminal work "The Emotional Brain" which was published in 1996.Before starting this book, if you are a believer in mind-body dualism, you have to suspend your belief and accept that we are entirely the product of our nervous system. That is, our behaviors, thoughts and emotions, indeed our personality, are entirely created by our brain and nervous system. With that premise, LeDoux takes us through the neuronal organizations and brain circuits that are responsible for what he calls the mental trilogy of cognition, emotion and motivation. He then explains how these brain circuits are coordinated and unified to make a person who he or she is. As the title of the book implies, the core of LeDoux's assertion is that the mental trilogy ultimately exists at the synaptic level. In other words, as he puts it, "You are your synapses. They are who you are."
5-0 out of 5 stars Not an easy read but well worth the effort
Joseph LeDoux's book Synaptic Self is one of those works that is so dense with material, it may take a second run through to really appreciate it all.Although probably written for a general audience, it is not an easy read.Don't expect to be able to zip right through it in a few days. His descriptions of the central nervous system, how it develops, how it functions, and how it matures, is very detailed. It gets down to the chemistry of the process and into the sub-areas of brain topography in a much more thorough way than many books of this kind tend to do.I have a health care background and started my career as a neurology nurse, and it still took me some time to go through the material.
5-0 out of 5 stars very helpful information for philosophers
While there is a philosophy of physiology, there is also a physiology of philosophy. Physiology going on is PRIOR TO any philosophizing going on.

1-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing
As someone suffering from social anxiety disorder, this book was extremely disappointing. It focuses almost entirely on what causes anxiety and the "suggestions" are not helpful at all.I felt as though all this book did was explain to me what it felt like to have this phobia. If you are looking to research the disorder, it would be a great book. If you are looking for help in battling social anxiety this book will be of no use to you, as I am guessing you already know what it feels like.

5-0 out of 5 stars Extremely Helpful
If you want to start dealing with your social anxiety, this is a great book to begin with.It teaches the reader excellent techniques to managing anxiety, and even after two years of therapy, I found the relaxtion excrises extremely helpful.Reading this book also gives the shy, lonely person who may have social anxiety a sense of belonging.Reading this book made me realize that I am not the only one with S.A.D. and it really has helped me tremoundlsy. This book is great for starting out with dealing with social anxiety and I would definatly recommend it.

2-0 out of 5 stars Disappointed
This is the first and only book I've bought concerning social phobia. Perhaps because I had already researched this subject on the web, a lot of the suggestions in this book were common sense and obvious. Too much was devoted to explication (e.g., what causes anxiety, nature vs. nature, what are SSRIs, etc.) vs. providing actual suggestions which I thought was a waste.

5-0 out of 5 stars Dr. Abdel Sattar Ibrahim, Professor and Psychology Consultant, AUC, CAIRO, EGYPT
i found this book one of the very few books in its content and production. Comprehensive, deep, insightful and well documented. I strongly recommend it to all interested in psychology, psychiatry, and\or health areas in any branch of knowledge: psychology, psychiatry, or medical sciences. I congratulate the author for such a beautiful work.
1-0 out of 5 stars Very questionable authority
The title of the book is a great idea, and it obviously resonates with lots of people including me as I purchased the book. I should have paid more attention to the one review pointing out the error regarding fish oil studies.

5-0 out of 5 stars Toward Bridging the Gap
This book is an excellent engagement of several critical and interesting issues on the nature of spiritual experience and accompanying belief systems. As scientists with apparently little earlier background in religion and spirituality, the authors do a good job in getting to the bottom of what inspires religious beliefs--ultimately, in their view, a profound "spiritual" experience had by mystics, shamans, and others from diverse cultures all over the globe. They explain the neurology of how this likely works, in understandable lay terms. Along with this is a studied attempt to set it all in an evolutionary context. Yet this does not lead them to eliminate the possibility of actual spiritual reality behind the biology and its evolution. This is a very helpful approach, as opposed to the absolutism and reductionism of a decreasing number, but still the strong majority of scientists.
5-0 out of 5 stars Why do people believe in God?
Who do people believe in God?Is it a phenomenon, a perceptual illusion of your brain or is God a real, quanitfiable entity?
5-0 out of 5 stars Why God Wont Go Away
In this fascinating novel, Why God Won't Go Away, authors Andrew Newberg and Eugene D'Aquili document their explorations and experiments in order to connect the biology of the brain to the religious impulse or belief. Newberg and D'Aquili blend advance technology and science into the nature of consciousness and spirituality. The main question they face is why, with all this advanced technology, do people still continue to believe in a higher power? Throughout history many theories have been disproved by science except for one; the belief in God or a higher power.

5-0 out of 5 stars beautiful!!
it's a must for everyone. Osho, one of the many great gifts life has given us.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Positive
I felt a sense of relief after reading this book. It's very positive and uplifting and very funny at times. It allows you to see your limitless potential instead of instilling a guilt-ridden, "I am a sinner" mentality.

5-0 out of 5 stars Inspirational! One of the best self help books I've ever read
I read a lot of self-help books.I had read that Osho is a contraversial figure, often accused of being a preachy spiritual quack. This may be true.He does ramble on and interject his teachings with stories (and even jokes!) that don't really support his points. He does seem to like to listen to himself talk.

4-0 out of 5 stars Finger paint your way through neuroanatomy
If you loved your third grade art class, you'll love this brain coloring book. The truth is we learn by doing, using our hands, applying colors. Many areas of the brain are involved in what we think of as simple learning tasks. Adding manual tasks to learning the complicated anatomy of the brain strengthens the learning process - forces you to linger over the page and get involved in learning the structures.
5-0 out of 5 stars Very helpful
This is a must for anyone interested in learning about the anatomy of the human brain.

4-0 out of 5 stars Some excellent ideas but heavy going.
An interesting book. It is also a unique book in that the author tackles atopic not many have dwelled upon in 20th century thought. He presentsemotion as a kind of perception that guides or organizes reason, but Iwould like to have seen more on this since he touches upon it briefly. Therest of the book is an excursion into epistemology and the author's ownthoughts and evaluations. The book would have benefited from more examplesas well. Come with a rich vocabulary (e.g., homunculi) and be prepared totolerate rereading and dense language in attempting to follow arguments. Iam not quite sure about the intended audience, but it would seem to beeditors of philosophy or psychology journals, or the staff of philosophydepartments. The average reader would need 2 to 3 times the number of pagesto understand what is being talked about. This is a pity because the topicis important. Interestingly he uses 'she' for general reference. Overall, although it seems to be more of a skeptical justification that is boggeddown in the analytic, cognitive approach, it is worth reading for theexcellent ideas but does require forbearance.

3-0 out of 5 stars Too embued with subjectivism to be a really good book
De Souza's book is an interesting examination of a little-understood ordiscussed topic in philosophy, but it suffers from an excess ofcurrently-fashionable subjectivism/skepticism.

4-0 out of 5 stars The User's Manual for the Brain
Great book, if you understand Bodenhamer and NLP. If not, keep your fingers off it.

2-0 out of 5 stars Disappointed.
Honestly, I only got to page 35 in this 400 page book. To this point, at least 3 times I had to scratch my head, reading about something with terminology that had not been defined. At all. And, if this book is about the different styles of communication, it was poorly written for Visual Types who make up 60% of people. The pictures and diagrams are few and not very good, in my opinion. Finally, the book was unable to hold my attention or interest which doesn't speak well for a book about excellence.

3-0 out of 5 stars Too deep - for practitioners trying to cure someone
This is a book that starts very well, describing every aspect of NLP - Eye Cues, Words, phrases, commands, types of personality (Kinesthetic, Visual, Auditory and Digital... this lattest one being totally diferent than other books on the subject).

This book can be used toghether with therapy (I recommend Dr Richards selp help series that you can buy on line). 5-0 out of 5 stars A great survey text
Panksepp's "Affective Neuroscience" represents a landmark text in this field. It is a concise and readable summary of the relevant science. Panksepp does a laudable job of collecting a wealth of research data, providing a theoretical integration for that data and presenting all of this in an accessible form. The text is aimed at seriously minded students - the level of detail would be off-putting to the casual reader who might be better off with Joseph LeDoux's "Emotional Brain" (though that book is centered mainly around the emotion of fear).
5-0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Foundation, Despite Its Age
It often astonishes me how many of my colleagues continue to argue that emotions are no more than simple reflexes that probably do not even exist in animals. Yet anyone who spends much time with animals constantly observes sophisticated reasoning and highly developed emotions. And it is difficult to try and reduce the sometimes devastating consequences of emotional disturbances in people with mood disorders to a series of reflexes.
5-0 out of 5 stars Good basic information for biologists interested in the Neuroscience of Emotions
The information in Affective Neuroscience covers all information from a evolutionary perspective including literature from birds and mammals. In every case human responses, regions of the brain, etc. are the same or very similar. One of the most interesting inclusions is the information about mental disorders associated with improper functions of the receptors described. The synthesis of material is very good, although the author is not a succint writer. The

5-0 out of 5 stars Second edition
As an author of this book I appreciate Suzanne Nguyen's review of the first edition from February, 2003.When preparing the second edition, we took her suggestions into account.I think she would find that if she took a look at the second edition (the one that is now sold here), she would find that most of her previous criticisms have been addressed. We still did not provide a glossary, but we felt this was not necessary for an advanced text like this one. However, as we make plans for a third edition, it would be useful for us to hear from additional readers so that we can produce the best text possible.

This is an upper division text. The detail is clearly described and it even has well drawn out charts. If you are studying neuroscience or just interested in leaning about the embryonic development of the brain this is a good book.

3-0 out of 5 stars Decent content, but needs editing and is slightly confusing
"Development of the Nervous System" is a textbook which appears to be an introductory text to the field. The textbook is supposed to be appropriate for undergraduates, however, as a biology graduate student with some previous exposure to neurobiology, I had some difficulties with the text because of some of the reasons mentioned below.

Editorial Review

In the last decades of the 20th century, scientists have come to believe that the human brain is almost completely modular. Every bit of the brain does something in particular, and surprisingly specific abilities, memories, and responses are in localized areas. Journalist Rita Carter has drawn a map of what is known (and speculated) about the mind in a heavily illustrated field guide to the human brain.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A terrific, simplified, user-friendly introduction to neuroscience
Ditto what other readers have said about the user-friendliness of Carter's book. The many sidebars and illustrations make an otherwise dauting topic--heuroscience--accessible to a lay audience as well as providing a handy basic reference for the more scientifically-minded.
5-0 out of 5 stars If you know what an Alien Hand is, you don't need to read this book
Mapping The Mind by Rita Carter is one of those serendipitous finds in books that make one forget all the overhyped titles to which we are exposed. This is more than a coffee table book for the layman but, thankfuly, less than a medical school text. It is by a British science writer with extensive sidebars by recognized experts in neuropsychology. This illustrations are top rate. One can actually learn from the illustrations so that one can relate the text to the concept. This is exactly the way it should be. If I were empress of the world, my first decree would be that all text must be made understandable with extensive and top quality illustrations. That, neighbors, is how humans evolved - visual! visual! visual! Those pesky words, spoken and later written, came later.
5-0 out of 5 stars No Ghosts in the brain
An exellent and optimistic book that antecipates the place of consciousness in the brain.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very good book for Understanding PTSD
This is the first book I attempted to read after being diagnosed with PTSD. It helped me understand my unexplainable behavior and symtoms and helped me come to terms that I was not "crazy, as perceived, but simply having a normal reaction to an abnormal trauma. I would love to meet the author sometime. I HIGHLY recommenend this book.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good, but not great
I liked a lot of the insight this book had to offer. I don't like the promise that the reader can diagnose themselves by answering a few questions. A person doesn't need a diagnosis to know what they are going through, and they should not be diagnosing themselves anyway- for obvious reasons.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good book, but the POST TSD SOURCEBOOK BY GLEN SCHRALDI
IS MUCH BEETER. This book discusses what PTSD is, but not how to treat it like the (PTSD) sourcebook does. ... Read more
