5-0 out of 5 stars A must have for any pediatric neuropsychologist !
Thanks to Sue Baron, the pediatric neuropsychologist finaly have the equivalent of the Lezak for adult neuropsychology. This book is in the top list of the American Board of Pediatric Neuropsychology and you will understand why when you will read it ! The heart of the book is the description of almost all the tests available in the field of pediatric neuropsychology. The descriptions cover the statistic properties and the main studies available on the principle tests. Each chapter that presents a function starts with a state of the art at a Phd level. It really saved me hours of reading in many books ! Included are also numerous norms (mostly americans)with unpublished ones. The references included are of a great interrest too. The chapter on report wrinting is also essential. To be perfect one would expect a chapter on achievement tests and due to its publication date the WISC IV and the WPPSI III are not included. Apart from this there is simply no criticism to formulate. In a short way I strongly recommand this book and would be very surprised to find any disappointed reader !

5-0 out of 5 stars Finally, a Spreen & Strauss for child neuropsychologists!
My title should "tell all" to any real neuropsychologist. I don't have time to give this book the review it deserves, so I'll just say this: It's a must have for any pediatric neuropsychologist. It's also beautifully written. Thanks, Dr. Baron! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
Research in cognitive neuroscience has exploded in the last two decades, mostly due to the rise of experimental techniques such as magnetic resonance imaging and positron emission topography, but also due to the ability now to simulate neuronal behavior computationally. This book, written by leading experts in the field is written for the student in mind, so anyone with a strong curiosity about what has been accomplished in cognitive neuroscience up till now will gain a lot from reading the book. The study of the brain is fascinating and there is every indication that a thorough understanding of cognitive processes, including the nature of consciousness, will be achieved in this century.
4-0 out of 5 stars Not for those without background
This book is not intended for the general reader, reader with cellular neuroscience background, but has a target audience of advanced undergraduate or graduate level students with relevant background. Also would be useful for the psychology professional without specific or with dated cognitive neuroscience background, or others intending a research or applied clinical career in the area. Appropriate background would necessarily be at least an undergraduate course in cognitive psychology, with additional help provided by biological psychology or a medical professional in neurology. Discussions of principles and mechanisms are at a "functional machinery" level and thus would not make sense to those without some previous training in those principles. It just isn't a basic text, thus, no glossary of basic terms is included. Yes, the material is both abstract and complex, but so is brain function, and we are just beginning to learn. There are very, very few textbooks that survey this area which only became a separate field of study sometime around 1986. Other reading material in the field consists entirely of professional level chapters in compiled and edited texts. The only other broad survey text that I know of is Marie Banich's book on the related area of Cognitive Neuropsychology.

3-0 out of 5 stars Additions to this book
This book is more like a bunch of journals bound together. The authors introduce new words without previous qualifications. For example, in the chapter of binocular vision, they added spatial normalization and various other models, without telling what exactly they are! Also when I tried to find these terms in relatively basic texts I was unable to find them. Same was the case with internet.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Maybe the best
This book is one of my absolute favorites among the hearing research books. It covers all the basic themes and often gives very recent citations. So it is interesting to read that in some tinnitus patients ears the frequency is emitted from the ear! But together with this is the problem of the book associated: it is a little bit short. But all in all it is great to read and a wonderful inspiring book. Highly recommended also for beginners.

I have read many books on anxiety disorders having suffered from them myself. This is the best book I have read on the subject. It is clear and easy to read.It outlines the causes of anixety so you can stop anxiety. It is the only anxiety book I have read that did not jump right to prescription medication as being the only solution. It challenges you to go deep within yourself and your lifestyle to look for possible answers.

2-0 out of 5 stars Seems Promising But...
This book seemed at first like it would make the content of the class more bearable when in actuality it failed miserably (for a lot of the content) to convey the information in a clear, understandable way. The figures were not clearly labeled...sometimes you didn't even know what you were looking at. It did a poor job of explaining several concepts, often confusing the reader. It also contradicted itself on several occasions. Overall, I'd say that they are on the right track especially with the companion website but this book was choppy and a difficult read for the most part.

5-0 out of 5 stars Spectacular
This is the Sensation and Perception textbook that I have fervently hoped for, and dreamed of, for years. Shouldn't a book on S&P bathe, dazzle and seduce the senses? Shouldn't it entertain and mesmerize its audience with illusions, effects, aftereffects, animations, classic experiments, art, music, historical images, brain imaging, and other sensual demos? The book is alive with colorful and informative visuals leaping off nearly every page. When used along with the remarkable student website (no extra charge) and Wyttenbach's forthcoming PsyCog CD-ROM (a few dollars extra), anyone can sense, perceive and *feel* the glorious phenomena that make our field so intriguing.

4-0 out of 5 stars Well-written and compelling, although with obvious biases
Andrew Newberg, professor of Radiology and Psychiatry, has written (along with Mark Robert Waldman) a sequel to his book, Why God Won't Go Away. The new book has strengths and weaknesses, but, should be of some interest to those who have an interest in spiritual matters and human behavior. The book is primarily written to address the question of how the brain works so that we arrive at what we believe to be true. The authors write from a spiritual perspective, but take numerous jabs at Christians and Christianity throughout the book. In contrast, New Age and Far Eastern religions seem to receive little or no criticism (co-author, Mr. Waldman seems to be into New Age type spirituality), and are actually endorsed. Likewise, atheists may not be entirely comfortable with the content, since it clearly challenges their cherished belief that that have no beliefs.
5-0 out of 5 stars An Astonishing Book
This fascinating book examines how human beings construct their beliefs about everything:how we map the realities of the world, build moral and political beliefs, and develop religious and spiritual beliefs about the universe. The authors base their premises on neurobiological research and then they integrate their findings with contemporary psychology and sociology without ever becoming overly technical, a difficult feat when it comes to explaining the neurological processes of the brain.

Editorial Review

Joseph LeDoux, a professor at the Center for Neural Science at New York University, has written the most comprehensive examination to date of how systems in the brain work in response to emotions, particularly fear.Among his fascinating findings is the work of amygdala structure within the brain. The amygdala mediates fear and other responses and actually processes information more quickly than other parts of the brain, allowing a rapid response that can save our lives before other parts of the brain have had a chance to react. He also offers findings and theories on how the brain handles--and in many cases, buries--extremely traumatic experiences. In all, a compelling read about the mysteries of emotions and the workings of the brain. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Great insight on human reactivity
A very thorough journey into the relationship between emotions and the brain.I was drawn to this book simply to answer the question:why is it that people don't make sensible choices sometimes but, rather, let their emotions rule?I got the answer and then some.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great intro text
In this highly accessible book, LeDoux provides a thoroughly readable introduction to the neurobiology of emotion (specifically, the neurobiology of fear). The first three chapters are devoted to an interesting historical account of how the study of emotion was long neglected, first by the behaviorists (for whom the emotions were "fictional causes" of behavior) and then by the majority of cognitive scientists. Emotions were believed to be too ephemeral, too subjective to permit the possibility of scientific study. But for LeDoux, as for other investigators (e.g., Damasio), the compelling feeling tone of emotions is different from emotions proper. Emotions proper consist of behavioral and physiological packages that come as genetic birth-rights; they operate unconsciously and it is only a `side effect' that in creatures whose brains can sustain consciousness, the emotions can eventually be introspectively felt (but, cf. Panksepp).
1-0 out of 5 stars Unethical , unscientific and heartless
This is a case of false advertising. The book claims to be about human emotions but the author says that "it has been the animal studies that have really shaped my view of the emotional brain." Of course, we can learn nothing about natural human emotions by cutting away parts of caged animals' brains to see how upset they get. No, let me correct that, we do learn that some people, like the author, are heartless. There has been plenty of excellent brain research involving consenting human subjects. This author cites some of that work but jumbles it all up with unscientific extrapolations from unethical adventures in vivisection. Don't reward him with royalties. If you want to learn about the physiology of human emotions, spend your money on books based on solid, ethical studies of consenting human subjects. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A little disappointing
Anyone reading the title of this book might justifiably assume it was going to deal with the type of energy manifested in Qi Gong, EFT (Emotional Freedom Techniques), acupuncture, Quantum-Touch and many other energy therapies - subtle energy it is often called.
5-0 out of 5 stars A Mind-Boggling New Scientific Understanding
James Oschman has done it, he's presenting us with the rare gift of abreakthrough understanding of the human condition that includes a profound new theory of the mechanisms of life, one with critically important clinical implications. In prose that reads like a good adventure story he presents with great clarity, comprehensiveness, and extensive endnotes a mind-boggling story from the frontiers of biophysics. Reading merely the introduction to this immensely important book will open your mind to a radically different paradigm of human functioning, one that is laying the foundation for more fully understanding all kinds of phenomena of living processes thatheretofore have remained insoluble mysteries.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent!Fun to read and illuminating at once.
This hand sized paperback by Daniel Nettle has it all: wisdom, wit, useful information, philosophical discourse, groundbraking psychology and, good old common sense. The subject is happiness (of course) and, from the very beginning of the book, some myths and misconceptions are challenged and dispelled and, taking their place appear the well reasoned arguments and conclusions from the author. If you enjoy a brilliant mind at work this book is for you.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book will make you smarter about happiness
Wow - it's wonderful to read a book based on research instead of opinions and hopes.Daniel Nettle combs through the newest findings on emotion to help us focus on workable, sane, and ultimately useful ways to approach happiness and unhapiness.

2-0 out of 5 stars On the road to recovery, however not sure if I'll ever reach it...?
After struggling for over 3 years with this problem, accomodating it, and letting it get worse over time, I finally stumbled across this book. Everyone seemed to rave about it, sharing their experiences and recoveries. I purchased this book about 3 weeks ago, and have been continuously trying the tips and solutions to curing the shy bladder problem. Basically, the general idea this book suggests is that you continously attempt to urinate in the urinal and that eventually over time your subconcious mind will allow your brain to trigger the emptying of your bladder. It ALSO states that on average, it should take about 8-12 sessions to fully cure your shybladder, and that several sessions per week should be performed. In theory, my bladdershyness should be cured in about 2 weeks right? Well, 3 weeks thus far and I can contest to very little (almost NO) results.. Even sometimes I can not urinate when I am completely alone in the bathroom because I have the fear of someone walking in, a fear that I NEVER had before I started attempting to cure this problem. Therefore, at this point in time, I can say that this book has not helped me and has even been slighty detramental to my bladder shyness.

5-0 out of 5 stars a fascinating look at stress and the immune system
This book is useful for students, scientists, and those who are otherwise interested in integrative medicine. Sternberg augments her explanation of the stress-immune connection with interesting and relevant research studies. I found it useful as a student studying neuroscience and as an individual trying to understand and manage stress in my life.
5-0 out of 5 stars Solving The Mind-Body Conundrum
I am a writer who is currently at work on a book on my living through colon cancer. I was diagnosed at age 47 with Duke's C-3 colon cancer. Because of the early onset of my disease, I was three years too young to be considered for routine colon cancer screening, which doctors are supposed to offer to patients when they reach age 50. I was lucky. Even with one year of chemotherapy (due to minor lymph node involvement) medical textbooks and doctors said my chances of surviving five years (a five year colon cancer survivor is considered "cured") were about 35 percent. Now, seven years later, I can say that Esther Sternberg's work validates some key elements of the survival strategy I developed for myself that links health and wellness and emotions.5-0 out of 5 stars Through the Eyes of a Sensitive Human Being
Brilliant scientific exploration of the mind-body connection expressed in compelling, animated realism. I enjoyed this delightful learning experience. Dr. Sternberg not only demonstrates outstanding knowledge and expertise in the field of psychoneuroimmonology, but she does so through the eyes of a sensitive, caring human being. A true inspiration to read many times over. Especially recommended for anyone who is looking for a way to enhance their health and well-being.... ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars I have no idea!
If you have no idea what NLP is, then forget about reading this book.I thought that NLP was confusing, this book just confused me even more. You must be in a special frame of mind to get this stuff. I read it, very slowly, and that proved to me that when you try to improve on something that a genius created (Bandler, NLP) then you must be more of a genius to understand it!

The quality of your life is a reflection of the beliefs you have running around in your brain.

I won't contribute a lengthy review here...Dr. Dawson's review above is quite comprehensive.I'm a clinical neurologist with an interest in cognitive neuroscience and dementia.I thought the book was excellent.Mesulam's first chapter on neuroanatomy, presented from the viewpoint of a behavioral neurologist, was particularly illuminating.Anybody with an interest in behavioral neurology shoudn't hesitate to carefully read this great book!

5-0 out of 5 stars An Outstanding Review of the Neurological Basis of Behavior
I first became aware of M.-Marsel Mesulam's work at a Harvard sponsored Behavioral Neurology conference more than a decade ago.Several of the co-authors of this book including David Bear, Antonio Damasio, Hanna Damasio, and Elliot Ross also presented at that conference.I obtained a copy of the first edition of Principles of Behavioral Neurology shortly afterwards. The goal of the original book was to provide introductory information about several important areas in behavioral neurology.Since that time I have continued to follow the work of this group of physicians and scientists and have benefited greatly from their insights into human consciousness, cognition, and behavior.I looked forward to the second edition of this book.Read more
