4-0 out of 5 stars Good
I have taken many Psychology classes. This book is clear and well illustrated. There is room for improvement but this is a great textbook.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Review of Relevant Research and Theories
This is an excellent text for adolescent development. It is an easy read for undergraduate students and it provides summaries of a variety of current research projects. I have used Steinberg's text for two years to teach a course in adolescent development and I have yet to find a better undergraduate text on adolescence.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent resource
Steinberg is an incredible writer and a top researcher. This textbook isthe best of its type. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Chomsky Meets Gladwell
I stumbled upon this title last summer while searching Amazon for something interesting to read. Skipping over it at that point for one reason or another, however, I was again recommended this text as a supplement for a Linguistics course in which I am enrolled this fall. This is certainly no textbook in Linguistics, but it does serve as an interesting, easy-to-read work that makes contemporary, Chomsky-driven Linguistics (especially with regard to Universal Grammar and Cognitive Science) highly accessible. Pinker's writing, while sometimes manic and even unclear, still manages to captivate and seize attention easily in the same manner as other recent nonfiction texts (Malcolm Gladwell's are two such examples). With an intended audience of linguistic-laymen readers, Pinker has certainly succeeded in making boring textbook linguistics interesting, in furnishing his text with pertinent examples, and in bringing contemporary linguistics to the masses. As other reviewers have noted, one should remain skeptical and critical of Pinker's proposed theories (as is necessary with all such writing), but I would certainly recommend this text to anyone even slightly interested in the subject.

3-0 out of 5 stars Left-Brainers Lack Empathy.
The language instinct is a set of interrelated capacities and functions in the brain and body that produce speech (and also writing and signing).Pinker calls this unity of parts and potentialities "modules." This book is his effort to make the case for his theory of how our language module operates.
5-0 out of 5 stars Understanding language - fascinating, and vital for writers!
Steven Pinker has written a fascinating account of how language works; how we, as listeners, process the sounds that make up words and sentences in a way that allows us to extract meaning. The book is clear, entertaining and very accessible; Pinker's writing style is witty and engaging.

I have used both the first and second editions of this text in courses for first-year graduate students in a Psy.D. program. The text is clear, the illustrations excellent, as are the color overheads. This is at exactlythe right level for students who will be clinicians using this informationin understanding and dealing with clients directly (as opposed toresearchers).

Editorial Review

Why do fools fall in love? Why does a man's annual salary, on average, increase $600 with eachinch of his height? When a crack dealer guns down a rival, how is he just like Alexander Hamilton, whoseface is on the ten-dollar bill? How do optical illusions function as windows on the human soul? Cheerful, cheeky, occasionally outrageous MIT psychologist Steven Pinker answers all of the above and more in hismarvelously fun, awesomely informative survey of modern brain science. Pinker argues that Darwin pluscanny computer programs are the key to understanding ourselves--but he also throws in apt references to

4-0 out of 5 stars A interesting insight into the workings of the brain
Interesting and insightful. However it can occasionally lack clarity, lose the thread of what is being said. Even so, this is well worth snapping up for a summer read. Especially so if you have not read this kind of stuff before.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good read but misleading title
The book is more about how the brain processes infomation and stores it etc and doesnt really explain the emotional / feelings aspects of the mind. There are quite a few sensational chapter titles like Good Ideas etc which doesnt really live upto the titles. There are times when you can turn pages after pages with out knowing where it is leading , and ends up actually leading NOWHERE !!Nevertheless the book is a treasure box of ideas and very thought provoking. Gives some fresh perspective on evolution(though Billy Bryson does it better) , cultural evolution , mechanics of eye sight , some basic neurobiology (which could ahve been more detailed) etc. He does touches a lot of human behaviour (interesting) , but falls short explaing them in a satisfactory way( disappointing). You can better appreciate the book if you are a computer literate as it does draws lots of parallels between the working of a brain and programing concepts (recurssoins , pointers , OO :D Java , C++ anyone ?? ). Also presents some beutiful concepts on mind development of babies. Neverthe less the sensationalism in titles are a bit too much and I would'nt take what ever steven pinker says at face value and bear in mind that what ever is presented is just a theory , sadly the book can do better at conviction. Iwould recommend this book to some one looking for lots of new ideas on human behavior , wants a peek into how a human brain 'MIGHT' be working but does not expect a ready made answer. This book defenitly must be followed by more specialized books if you really want to get an idea of how the mind works.
5-0 out of 5 stars the meaning of my life
To paraphrase from preface's the famous Dr. Noam Chomsky's (a personal hero) suggestion regarding our ignorance, we do not have any ideahow this vast mystery called the mind could be solved.I have read this book the year it first came out (1997) and many times over since; should one still belive that thoughts, feelings, beliefs, meanings or ideas that all generated from this wonderful gold mine we called the mind can ever be understood?Dr. Pinker served as a wonderful tour guide to simply and elegantly point out some sailent features and functions of the mind that we ,I mean any non-psychologist, take for granted every day.I use my mind every day.(My wife and co-workers might want to argue otherwise, but they are wrong!I do think on a daily basis.).Yet I don't have any clue on the inner workings inside my own brain. Is the 17 th century French philiospher Rene Descart right when he proclaimed "I think therefore I am?"What insight and understanding have we gain regarding our mind since Descart's time?Another words, do we have any better understanding how thoughts and ideas are generated and processed in our mind?Dr. Pinker, now at Harvard and a gaint in this field, do not have the answers. As a matter of fact, he was not even sure all or any of our current understanding and guesses would later proven to be true. However, he has painted an overall picture on the state-of-art research on cognition.Oh, the book.It has eight chapters with interesting and enticing titles and he tried (I think and hope) to tickle readers' imaginations and challange our mostly unproven assumptions and beliefs. For example, under the standard equipment chapter, rationality and decision making serve as a frame work to discuss the complexity of our mind.He used the working definition of intlliegence (ie the ability to attain goals by assessing obstracles along the way and modify one's action to reach that point) to illustrate that we use our desires (ie the latest big screen Sony TV) and use our beliefs (ie if I work extra 50 hours per week to generate more income) to increase the chance of achieving that result (i.e. watching the Final Four basketball games on SONY big screen TV). Yet is this stimluli (vivid and beautiful live college hoops on TV) and response (working extra hours to generate estimated 5000 dollars of income) due to thinking or is this just a result fo a physical response from a sensory input?Do we endlessly shop for junks we cannot possibly need because of a physcial response of a sensory stimuli and not due to brain activities at all?Perhaps endless charges on credit cards of the mall rats have nothing to do with the minds or intelligence but a mere knee-jerk response to stimuli. What about the molecular/celluar level of the brain? Can we understand how the mind work if we exam and understand how each cell in our brain work and therefore how the mind work? From page 99, Dr. Pinker stated from the mathematicians Warren McCulloch and Walter Pitts that neurons have one purpose in life: "add up a set of qualites and compare the sum to a threshold and indicate whether the threshod is exceeded."Are you joking me?With a description like this, it sounded more like a description of a computer than a living breathing cell let alone a functional neuron.Suppose we have a complete and perfect understanding of a neuron on a celluar and molecular level, as he pointed out in the next few pages it is the interconnectiveness (my own invention to summarize the vastly complicated neural networks) that might be more important than any single cell.Another words, perhaps thoghts, ideas, imagination, emotions and other abstraction generated from our mind might be the results of these "supercomputer" networking. This conjucture might be completely wrong but interesting nevertheless. What about complexity itself? Can the fact that we are the product of millions of years of natural selections and therefore the compelexity of any organ in our body including the brain is resulted from million years of fuctional and adapive survival? It is beyond imagination of my limited mind (no pun intended) that perhaps I don't have adequate brain power to understand my mind?So why should I or any one care how my mind think and why my mind think a certain way?A mental life is the result of my mind, and it is utterly unexplainable in most cases. Why certain stimuli upset me to the nth degree and only at certain time and space? Is my mind too limited or incapable of overcoming those undesireable yet almost unaviodable negative feelings? Why can I be peaceful and happy like I want to be every time I am sitting in traffic idle for hours on that big parking lot we called the 210 freeway in Los Angeles?Dr. Pinker has no answers for my agony or a way to relief my mental anguish. He only gave me a clue as to the possible explainations and ideas.I keep this book close to me at an arm's reach every time my mind fails me (more frequent than I like now days and I am only 36 years old) and I re-read it over and over for its shear beauty, audacity, and clarity.Unquestion the authorative guide to my or any one's mind. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars POP! Thats the sound my brain made every time I turned the page
Oh my goodness! This book BLEW my mind! This is by far the best book out there for anyone who is interested in the strange things our brains do, and why they do them. This book is absolutly fascinating... and surprisingly easy to read! LOVED IT

4-0 out of 5 stars An interesting and entertaining book
The brain is a most fascinating organ, and this book opens a window on some of its features by illustrating what can happen as a result of diseases or other events. Despite the seriousness of the topic, the book is entertaining, even though stopping for a moment to put yourself in the shoes of the people to whom these events happen is immediately sobering. The author has built the characters he describes by mixing together several patients (at least, this is what the author reports), which I thought was a good thing because I imagined that the patients would otherwise be very recognizable.

The works of neurologist Oliver Sacks have a special place in the swarm of mind-brain studies. He has done as much as anyone to make nonspecialists aware of how much diversity gets lumped under the heading of "the human mind."Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An Awesome Romp Through the Pluriverse.
"Anthropologist on Mars" begins with a quote by geneticist J.B.S. Haldane - a quote that so beautifullly sums up the book's aim as to bear repeating:
5-0 out of 5 stars Second the motion Broadening our sense of the 'human'
I recommend Dennis Littrell's review of this book on this site.He outlines clearly what the book is about, and gives us the basic story of each of the seven chapters, the seven cases that make up the book. He headlines his review 'extraordinary genius' and I share this feeling about Oliver Sachs.
3-0 out of 5 stars Brilliant, But Blind To Childhood And Prenatal Emotional Trauma
This is a fascinating book, and even though I don't agree with many of Oliver Sacks's conclusions, I found it a worthwhile read nonetheless. It is packed with superior case material and anecdotal information - and largely presented in a very readable format (and unlike in some of his other books, he reins in his footnotes!).Some of the chapters, like "Prodigies" or "An Anthropologist On Mars" or "To See Or Not To See," are downright brilliant and provide wonderful and unusual insights into the workings of the human brain - and the universals of human experience. But other chapters (such as "The Colorblind Painter" and "The Landscape Of His Dreams") are weak and drag on, rehashing the same relatively minute points ad nauseum.

WOW! This is an incredibly illustrated and beautifully laid out book. The information is fantastic. It is suitable for undergraduate level or early graduate level biological psychology--- its not so detailed that it becomes dry and boring, yet, not too simple that it does the same. Its extremely easy to learn from and very up to date.If you are familiar with the industry-standard general psychology book by Myers-- this one comes close (if not farther) in the way of readability, accessibility to readers, and illustrations. 5-0 out of 5 stars Finally No More Diets!
I love this book. I'm actually still doing the exercises in the book. I believe there are almost 90 exercises. Geneen requires you dig deep. The first few days of doing the work, I was a mess. I have used food to not deal with my emotions for so many years, that it actually brought me back to my emotional self as a teenager. My first diet started when I was 15 at 102 pounds! I had went over that 100 pound mark then, started my first diet, and never dealt with my emotions after that unless it involved food. I'm almost 40 years old now and thought this vicious cycle would never end. The more I dieted and deprived myself, the more I weighed in the end.

I borrowed the 4th ed. of this book from a friend of mine to write up a lecture on synaptic transmissions. It was the clearest, most well-written physio psych book I think I've ever seen.Usually when psychologist try to write about biology they end up doing things like describing neurons as "a fluid-filled balloon" (no joke.Actually saw that in my intro textbook), but Carlson is clear yet intelligent.I would definitely recommend this book and hope to use it in my classes in the future. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The best advanced text on the market
This textbook is a very detailed and very up-to-date exposition of Neuroscience, and in my view, for the more advanced student it is one of the best books out there. What it is NOT is a simple, concise introduction for people who are studying the nervous system for the first time. If you are taking an entry-level Neuroscience course you are likely to be overwhelmed by the amount of detail, and, like some of the other reviewers who gave this book a bad rap, might blame the book for the fact that you can only take in so much detail in a first sitting, and fail to see the forest for all the trees. So if you are new to Neuroscience, read something like Bear et al "Neuroscience - Exploring the Brain" first, and only once you have absorbed that, turn to this beautifully detailed book for a much closer look at the subject. The chapters on Vision by Clay Reid and the Hearing chapters by Brown in this book are quite simply and without a doubt among the best textbook chapters on these topics anywhere, (and much better than anything you will find in Kandel!)

4-0 out of 5 stars Most up-to-date text on the market
I'm a clinical academic neurologist with an MS in neuroscience some 25 years ago, and I decided to read through this text as a means of bringing myself up-to-date in the field. This textbook accomplished that task admirably.I will agree with some critics that parts of it were far too detailed, especially the sections on molecular neurobiology, where too often things got bogged down with discussions of a protein's biophysical properties, for example. Another caveat is that there are some production defects--the pages around 200 are not in the right order, and I found a few diagrams that were mislabelled. But the illustrations are really gorgeous.I've made extensive use of the CD, which contains all the figures and their legends, for Power Point presentations to the neurology residents I teach. I would suggest that future editions of the CD incorporate some videos and animated diagrams that could better illustrate some concepts, e.g., details of signal transduction, which is REALLY complex and was hard to follow in the text. But Kandels text is now several years older and as the pace of neuroscience is so incredibly rapid, this text contains more of the latest info.

2-0 out of 5 stars Too detailed
This text is not appropiate for any for introductory class to neuroscience at any level (whether grad or undergrad). The depth and detail leaves the reader confused at best. Perhaps it is suitable for an advanced gradute seeking to remedy any detail oriented holes. For all others, it is a precursor to a headache.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A new way of thinking about anxiety
When the author said we give ourselves two impossible choices by telling ourselves we can't stay because of our fear and panic, yet we can't leave because of the failure and humiliation, she really hit it on the nail for me. Giving myself two possible choices - it's okay to stay, and it's okay to leave - opened up a new reality for me. I never told myself before I read this book that it's okay if I leave a panicked situation. I always beat myself on the head and feared it meant I could never go back. I didn't realize how harshly I was treating myself until I saw another possibility, the "B-Talk," which is about accepting myself, giving myself options, and seeing anxiety from a new way. This book really is a life changer.

5-0 out of 5 stars Like a cure for agoraphobia!
I was homebound from 19 to 22 with agoraphobia. With counseling, Paxil, and the tools in this book I was able to go from being afraid of my own shadow to attending a 48,000-student University 1000 miles away from home by myself. I no longer have agoraphobia symptoms whatsoever and still keep a copy of this book around to read just in case I ever feel the fear again.

5-0 out of 5 stars Reader
I have read several other books that offered hope but no real help.
4-0 out of 5 stars THIS IS NOT ABOUT SHYNESS!So, this book is great!
I only have one comment, because everything else has already been said. Before reading this book, you HAVE to know the difference between shyness and social phobia. Then, you'll be able to really appreciate this piece of litterature!5-0 out of 5 stars saved my social life
This book is amazing. It truly holds the key to unlocking the door that social phobia bars shut.It works as a workbook, allowing you to write in your own stress management and anxiety charts, fears, goals, and a step by step guide on how to face those fears, overcome them, and literally better your life.I highly recommend this book to anyone who has even the slightest phobia's about meeting new people, or even self doubt, low confidence, or even to improve your social skills for everyday life. Before I was done with half the book, I was already the most optimistic, confident and happy, socially, then i've ever been in all my twenty years. And believe it or not, your social life variably effects all other areas of your life by determining the way you feel about yourself, in turn how you present yourself and how others view you, and setting the standard on your personal happiness.pick up this book! you wont regret it. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Very Interesting Book
A must read if this topic is of interest to you. A lot of great information very effective ways to improve your memory.

2-0 out of 5 stars Major limitations
This review is written from the perspective of someone learning a lot of complex material who wants to retain the learned material for a very long time. The book does a poor job of helping with this goal, although it does address other goals (described below) fairly well.
3-0 out of 5 stars Forgetting Is Not So Bad, Sometimes Necessary.
Memory fails most of us because we overload our circuits and do not apply methods to master the art of memory. To a considerable extent, memory is a skill which can be trained.Memories are the impressions we don't forget, the scenes and events which persist in our mind's eye and shape our lives, the lingering imprints which are always with us.
