5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Mind at Work
This book is the best example of a fine mind at work that I know of.Although I first read it in the 1980s, it still is current and continues to convey complex and timeless knowledge about the mind in an understandable, non-polemic, yet in an eclectic and fresh way.
5-0 out of 5 stars Maps of the Mind (Charles Hampton-Turner)
I began reading "Maps of the Mind" in the mid-eighties, and have found this to be the most important, inspiring and influential books I've ever read. The authors' suggestions of possible appliations of hemispheric specialization upon biblical, historical and mythological events are facinating and insightful. This book makes a geunine attempt at reassemling "humpty dumpty". No other publication (that I've read) even dares to attempt to "make sense of" and "unify" practically every religions, philosophical, political, mythological and acedemic "ideas", "concepts" and "phenomena".This is my #1 choice of books, and I've both recommended it to others, and given several copies away to friend.Read this book!

5-0 out of 5 stars Contents:
This book, essentially collates, combines, and compares theories of how the human mind works, finding parallels, offering interpretations, and finding intersections of ideas. Beginning with historical and religious ideas, it differentiates among more than 50 main concepts including those of Freud, Jung, Fromm, Marx, Erikson, Piaget, Maslow, Russell, Buber, Chomsky, and Marcuse. It's an amazing trip through explanations of "us," and serves as an introduction to concepts of cybernetics and feedback in mental and information systems. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Excelent source for practitioners and trainees
Has simple, understandable and specific explanations of concepts and it's easy to carry everywhere.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good, practical neuropsych dictionary
As a neurologist in training, I found this small book to be quite useful for defining all those terms used in behavioral neurology that seem intimidating. It covers descriptive signs and syndromes as well.A great way to expand your professional neuropsychological vocabulary, if you wish to study it.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Much Needed Reference
Clinical neuropsychology is in the position of being a very modern neuroscience whose nosology stretches well back into the 19th century. Contributions to the current lexicon not only include 150 years of coiningterms and identifying syndromes, but also the modern world of functionalneuroimaging, weekly changes in psychopharmacology, wet lab neurosciencefinding application in the clinic, and the development of new tests and newconstructs. With such diversity of science and scientific terms, it is withrelief that this book has finally gotten to press. It should be as usefulto students and academics as well as clinicians. Actually, neurologists andpsychiatrists should also be intrested. Nearly every obscure diagnosis isincluded, some with remarks about the scientific proof that the disorderexists added. It is not a DSM-IV for neuropsychology, butit does notpretend to be. An added thought, if you read only 2 pages per day you willbe done in 90 days. ... Read more

"Whenever you read a book or have a conversation, the experience causes physical changes in your brain. In a matter of seconds, new circuits are formed, memories that can change forever the way you think about theworld. [...] I'll never forgive David Lynch for his movie Erasorhead."The first two pages of In the Palaces of Memory introduce remembrance as anact not only of acquisition but of self-exposure. Memories make it possiblefor us to function; they may also lodge themselves in us "like a shardof glass healed inside a wound," never to be expelled. Some memoriesare desired and some become a part of the structure of our minds againstour will.5-0 out of 5 stars "Fascinating" -- Nature ... "Rich and Lucid" -- James Gleick

1-0 out of 5 stars an inferior translation
There is a version available at Amazon translated by Nicola Luckhurst. It is excellent, although almost any version would be preferable to Strachey's mechanistic translations of Freud's work.
5-0 out of 5 stars The hidden drives beneath hysteria
A fascinating book that explores the hidden factors behind anxiety, written when Freudwas still studying his first hysterical patients that became famous in thepsychoanalytic literature. The collaboration with Breur was actually sealed with thisbook, but ironically it was also the end of their friendship. Apart from thepsychoanalytic concepts, the reader can really enjoy the five case studies included in"Study on hysteria". Only one case study was written by Breur and this goes to showthat Freud really wanted to go deep into the unconscious whereas Breur after the firstpatient didn't go any further; basically because he would have had to confront himselfwith the patient's sexual drives as well as his instincts. This is a very stimulating bookthat allows the reader to appreciate the kind of female patients affected by hysteriabefore the 20th century, that were not understood by most psychiatrists. Freudmenaged to understand why the repression of the sexual instinct led to a neurosis. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Rob Bocchino workshops
I have not yet read this book, but I have been fortunate enough to see Rob Bocchino and learn many of his useful techniques, tips, and ideas about how to better meet the needs of students on a deeper and personal level.I guess I'm going to have to go ahead and buy the book as well. His workshops continue to give me hope and direction for how I want to leave my students and how I want them to continue to develop the world around them (educationally and emotionally).

5-0 out of 5 stars If you buy one book on trauma, here it is!
If you buy just one book on Trauma this is the one to buy. Not only does Dr. Allen write with compassion and understanding, but he writes both about despair and hope. Trauma survivors reading the first half of the book will see themselves and their histories in the details he writes about trauma. You will also come to a better understanding of just why Trauma is so hard to leave behind. His chapters on brain physiology may seem complicated, but more than anything they are worth wading through for you to gain forgiveness for yourself and the persistence of your traumatic reactions. In the second half of the book he offers hope in the form of chapters (not lists) of very specific things you can do to help yourself recover. Dr. Allen treats the trauma survivor with respect and confidence that s/he can and will work towards a better future.
5-0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive and wise "self-education" book
This book will help trauma sufferers and the mental health professionals who work with traumatized individuals. While filled with helpful advise, it moves beyond simple explanations and easy answers. It's not a "light" read, but it's well worth the effort. This is a healing and informative book for any reader who wants to understand the effects of trauma on the self and relationships. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Too much or not enough?
I am diagnosed Asperger's/HFA, and I found the book to be useful in some ways, although it did not address issues caused by sensory integration dysfunction, which can also be found in many people with ADHD (not to mention DSI being misdiagnosed as ADHD).From the viewpoint of many people with ADHD, the information in this book is too basic. From the viewpoint of someone further onto the autism spectrum, the information is not basic enough.
5-0 out of 5 stars consider buying it
Hi this is my first review and i'm reading alot of adhd books lately. This book is about social skills, the skills that may not have been learnt easily when you have adhd. In fact after reading this book I felt like an alien learning the rules that everyone knew and realise how I was alienating everyone else with my adhd symptoms. What I liked about this book was it was quite helpful. The information is very simplistic, yet there is a difference between understanding the information and actually knowing it, meaning practicing it. I like to use a metaphor to explain things quicker about this book. It's like sports for example, you have rules to follow, you are expected to know it, or you would get fouled out and you won't even be in the next game. Learn the simple rules first dispite it's decieving simplicity, then get better at the game later when you know what your doing. Real life is not a game, you will get isolated extremely quickly not knowing the social rules. I wish I knew the rules before though, there aren't too many books with this content since your all suppose to know it.
3-0 out of 5 stars Good, but some important issues left unaddressed.
The basic premise of this book comes from the idea from Fulgham's book that "all we know we learned in kindergarten". Novotni interprets these kindergarten skills as basic social skills, which most ADDers didn't pick up on in their early years, perhaps because they were too busy running around and breaking things, or daydreaming too much.

5-0 out of 5 stars Superb critique of how Idealism confuses scientists
What are you, a ghost in a machine or a living human being? In this excellent book, the authors, a neuroscientist and a philosopher, answer the question.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent, and controversial, critique of neuroscience
Undoubtedly this book contains both excellence in terms of its review thoroughness and controversey by virtue of its conclusions. It is quite clear from the beginning that Hacker's philosophical stance drives most of the conceptual critique in the book.It is a complicated book, given the vast variety of themes and attendant analyses, and a short review will do it little justice. However, Hacker is a later Wittgensteinian, and to appreciate most of the philosophical input the reader should have reasonable knowledge of the contrast between early and later Wittgenstein, and what exactly characterises the core components of the latter. Editorial Review

As far as we know, plants and animals don't do it. Worry is a human "skill." And it comes in different forms. Some kinds indicate diagnosable conditions, such as depression, or Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD). Others, such as shyness, are built in from birth, and some seem plain old existential--stemming from broken trust or loss of faith. But worry is uniquely human. "To create worry," Dr. Hallowell writes, "humans elongate fear with anticipation and memory, expand it in imagination and fuel it with emotion. The uniquely human mental process called worrying depends upon having a brain that can reason, remember, reflect, feel, and imagine. Only humans have a brain big enough to do this simultaneously and do it well."Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Help for the common man and woman
I picked up Dr. Hallowell's book about three years ago. I was in a horrible job with a demanding and verbally abusive boss and thought I had died and gone to Hell. On more than one occasion I seriously considered driving my car into a tree just to avoid having to go to work another miserable day. I was in counseling with a psychologist at the time who, though quite a funny guy, was of no help to me. I worried about a lot of things. I worried about everything: how to survive in a rotten job; how to regain joy in my life with my wife and newborn son; how to stop self-destructive behaviors; how to get back my lost sense of humor. I was, needless to say, desperate! Then, while browsing through the "Self-help Section" of the bookstore, I was grabbed by the title of Dr. Hallowell's book: "Worry". I bought the book and read case studies all about myself. People who suffered exactly like I did. I learned that I wasn't a failure. I wasn't crazy. I wasn't destined to live out the rest of my life as a miserably unhappy man. I talked about the book with my wife and told her I thought I was depressed and really needed help. I went to a psychiatrist who said I was suffering from Major Depression. He prescribed medication and long term therapy. The change in me was dramatic. I felt better, mentally and physically, enjoyed my family, regained my sense of humor, and, best of all, I quit my job. Of course I found another job and I'm still in therapy. I'm no longer depressed. This book literally saved my life.

5-0 out of 5 stars very informative book on worry
I was very happy that I bought this book.As a person who suffers from worry/anxiety (learned from the best of them....my mother) I turned to this book to help me understand the reasons behind worry and what can be done to help the person suffering from it.Dr. Hallowell does an incredible job discussing the different forms of worry (including the differences between good and bad worry), the possibility of genetic reasons, how worry fits in with other mental illness (depression, obsessive-compulsive disorder), etc. He then talks about the different ways that worry can be dealt with.I was pleasantly surprised to see that he is not an advocate of just giving medication. He discusses a well-rounded approach of therapy, medication (if necessary), and things a person can do on their own. He discusses the various types of medication and how they work with different types of mental illness. The last part of the book talks about various things a person can do to help themselves deal with worry. 4-0 out of 5 stars If you feel you worry too much, you might like this book
"Worry" by Edward Hallowell is an excellent self-help book to read for people who feel they worry too much. It is also great introduction to the academic and clinical treatment of worry. Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A great book, but I disagree with some of his approach
I think what Mr. hellinger observed is how karma works in this world, though he said his finding is different from karma's ordinary definition. I believe we carry our original temperament and karma, and we are influrenced easily by people around us with their karma. In order not to be influrenced so easily, especially, by negative engery, we should pray oftenly to God for protection. Sylvia Browne's God, Creation, and Tools for Life will tell you how.

5-0 out of 5 stars Human wisdom
This is a marvelous book that addresses fundamental issues in our contemporary Western society with great, heart-felt insight. 5-0 out of 5 stars Revealing System Dynamics
For me chapter one alone is worth the price. As a group facilitator, Hellinger's insight on the how the system balances and how to approach it from the practitioner's point of view reveals a lot of system thinking in family/group situation. I particularly appreciate he sees his role as a Tao Master, which is really doing something by doing nothing. This book is now in Chinese and we have a study group and an on-going practitioner's group around the topic. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars What I expected from Amongst Ourselves
I was looking for a book that would actually help me on working with inside parts. This book delved mininimally in this area and then went back to basic living with DID, i.e., safety plan, letting people know - the basics. Not at all what I was looking for.

5-0 out of 5 stars Validating and Practical Guide for Multiples and Those Who Love Them
I was recently diagnosed with DID after years and years of struggling with my system and believing that I was quite literally insane and needed to be locked away... For years I have been diagnosed as having Major Depression, bipolar disorder, dysthymia (sp?), PTSD, etc... I had a major, disruptive depressive episode five months ago and I'm just now partially recovering. I was fortunate enough to find an intelligent, articulate, and warm therapist that I trusted enough to tell the secret that I've been holding for 20 years. I told her about The People Who Live Behind My Eyes, Joan, Jessica, Erica with a "c", Michael, Little Kara, Adarin (pronounced a-duh-reen), and Mmemnon. She lent me Amongst Ourselves and suggested that I read it and that we use it in therapy.
