Editorial Review

5-HTP is a naturally derived amino acid that has been shown in comprehensive studies to be safer than prescription drugs for the treatment of insomnia and depression, and can also be used for treating obesity, migraine headaches, fibromyalgia, and premenstrual syndrome. It may prove to be more popular than St. John's wort for the treatment of depression and other serotonin-related conditions, as it's been shown to produce results in as little as two weeks, while the herb may take a month or longer. 4-0 out of 5 stars Advertised as New but was used
This is not a review but a critique. The book was advertised as new and I paid the "new" price, but it was used. There were several pages with penciled-in answers. The book itself is Murray's usual fine work.

2-0 out of 5 stars Incomplete and full of inconsistencies
While this book presents some interesting and possibly even helpful information, Murray destroys his credibility by his glaring contradictions. For example, on page 33 he says, "5-HTP...cannot be metabolized by the liver into kynurenine."Then on page 238 he says, "...if vitamin B6 levels are low, then more 5-HTP will get converted in the liver into another substance, kynurenine."5-0 out of 5 stars Don't Worry, Be Happy!
I have suffered from mild depression for years. The therapy described in the book has worked like a miracle. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars If I could own only one book on Asperger Syndrome...
Honestly, this is a must have as far as I am concerned. It is a small book, but it is full of essential information that can help parents and professionals understand how to help individuals with Asperger Syndrome reach their potential. I have recommended this book to many parents and professionals in my work as an educational specialist and find it helpful when working as a member of an IEP team. Busy professionals and parents who advocate for children with Asperger Syndrome will find themselves referring to this book again and again.

4-0 out of 5 stars Helpful for a certain type of Child with Aspergers
Aspergers Syndrome is becoming much more commonly diagnosed in children. As an employee of the school system, I have worked with many children with this diagnosis in recent years. While children who are given this diagnosis have certain characteristics in common, there are certainly many differences between such children. The book is particularly helpful if you are a parent or educator involved with a child who has temper tantrums or meltdowns.Certainly many children with the diagnosis have this problem, but just as many others do not.The information presented in the book on strategies to deal with a child with Aspergers who has temper tantrums is excellent. If the strategies are applied consistently, they may help many children from repeating the temper tantrums or meltdowns as often in the future. If you are working with a child who does not have this pattern of behavior, I would recommend finding a different resource to help that person learn social skills, etc...

3-0 out of 5 stars Not Impressed
This book wasn't at all what I expected, although it did have some good information.I found it to be geared towards AS students who are having a hard time in the public school system. It would be an excellent book if this is your current situation. However, for homeschooling a kindergartener the information was not all that valuable and I would suggest that you look at other books first. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars New Therapist highly recommends!
This is the 30th book I have read in my new field of psychology.I just finished my Masters in Counseling and state this book is so well written and in depth; it provides a review of many of the important aspects of my Masters Program; e.g. theories, diagnosis, therapy tools and techniques. While a wonderful book on Dissociative Identity Disorder, it is also a great resource for many aspects of therapy.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
The Dissociative Identity Disorder Sourcebook is a clear and concise source for those living with DID and an excellent source for the therapist as well as loved ones who live with someone with DID.As a person who lives with DID, I found the book very rewarding to me; validating, accurate, informative, instructive and nurturing.

5-0 out of 5 stars Nothing but helpful

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best introductions to this disorder and how it is treated
This is one of the best introductions to borderline personality that I know of. It is thorough and does a great job of explaining how the disease works in layman's terms. It also illustrates all the important aspects with excellent short examples.
5-0 out of 5 stars Highly Recommended
I read this book and I saw myself. If you suspect that you're a little flipped, check this book out.

5-0 out of 5 stars Approachable and Engaging
I've read more academic books (and think those are important, too. For that, I recommend "Demystifying Borderline Personality Disorder"), but this one was accessible and engaging, and had useful and practical advice for people with the illness and those around them. Because of that, the book gives the reader a sense of hope. In this field, that can be rare. There is some sexual content, and I can understand why some people would find that offensive. I personally didn't. Any misgivings I have about the book are offset by my enthusiasm about its readability and its usefulness to the people for whom it is written: borderlines and their families. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Solid Starting Point for Cultural Change
The Power of Procovery in Healing Mental Illness is an exciting book!Kathleen Crowley has written a book that you mayindeed, "Just Start Anywhere" and learn what is needed to change your thinking or help others to begin changing their thinking about living with a disability. When looking for a model to help think about training to help others understand recovery, I learned of Ms. Crowley's Procovery movement. She has a systematic approach to the topic which helps others to organize their thinking. It is also written on a level for an individual to focus on the "procovery" need in their lives.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Power of Procovery in Healing Mental Illness: Just Start
Excellent book for anyone who deals with Mental illness wether a consumer, family member or professional. We have been working on recovering from a mental illness for years.Last May we started our own Procovery hit and miss style. This book would have been benificial then and is now.Must Read!

5-0 out of 5 stars Impressive
This book is extraordinary!I love the word "procovery" meaning success can be found looking forward to new life and building new dreams regardless of the symptoms or diagnosis. As a case manager, I've read dozens and dozens of books on overcoming mental illness, and this is the first one to really address the difficult realities I see in practice every day with hope and practical suggestions.Procovery should be taught in graduate school for understanding the challenges and possibilities for overcoming mental illness. The sense of hope and practical guidance run throughout the book, and the separate "Procovery Notes" for consumers, family and staff make it easy for me to share the information and book with clients.I particularly agree with the "just start anywhere" principle - from my own experience it makes sense to start from where someone's energy is - and am impressed the way the book is designed so that it too can be started anywhere. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Very informative, easy to read, but pretty dry
I have been reading this text for my clinical psych class, and it's really informative. the authors provide a really good overview of everything so you get breadth and depth. The only drawback is the book is pretty dry reading. Some authors have the talent of making the textbook interesting and informative, but this is not one of those textbooks.

This textbook can be used as an introduction as its name suggests, and it also can be used as a kind of reference book after you have learned some more stuff in clinical psychology. What is good about this text is that it talks about every aspect of clinical psychology, from assesment, testing, observation, to intervention, and it also talks about sub areas such as child clinical, health psychology, neuropsychology, and forensic psychology. It sites many famous studies in clinical psychology.Good examples and some accounts on history as well. ... I was disappointed. It does not live up the th promise of its title. If what you want is the medical model for a psychiatry course or to know what a psychiatrist might tell you, this is the book for you.If you want to understand the full scope of treatment, this text is quite limited. The author either does not understand the psychological perspective of mental disorders or does not value it.

5-0 out of 5 stars An extremely useful primer
This is one of my favorite reference books. It describes how to do a good mental status exam in very clear language. It provides definitions of all the terms used in the process and gives well-written examples of their use. The authors help you to develop a good conceptual understanding of how to assess and describe a person's mental status. A valuable primer for social workers, psychologists and psychiatrists.

4-0 out of 5 stars A good tool
I started using art projection when I was a psychologist for a child adolescent unit in a state hospital.A good way to engage angry or depressed children without threat is to ask them to draw something, unless they have poor perceptual motor skills. But getting them to draw will tell you something about that right away. It is important to know what to expect in average drawing skills and this book helps with that. It also gives a place to start with children who have difficulty with verbal expression. This is not the Be All- End All text but it is worthy of being a companion to other art evaluation tools. It is for the subjective anecdotal information to supplement the more objective tools.

This is not the original I was trained to use but it works as well or better than Goodall's.I use it twice a year and have found the student responses are more in depth for interpretation than their psychoeducational or psychological reports. You can find more quickly where the "hope" level is and put energy into those who are reachable and refer those who aren't.I have collected hundreds of these samples over the years and find most are right on the mark. Of course, it mustn't be used as a diagnostic tool but it works well as a verifier of info.

2-0 out of 5 stars An unproven laundry list for interpretation
For those who want easy answers to deciphering drawings, then this book is a *must read.* But reader beware-- this research is not particularly sound and the original text was written in the early 70's, approximately 30 years ago-- and this book was not significantly updated since then. Hello! Our family values and ideas about family have changed since then, but that is not addressed in this volume. An art therapist worth their salt does not use this type of unreliable assessment to work with clients. I apologize for disagreeing with the last reviewer, but I believe this volume is more of a *must avoid* rather than any type of a classic in the field of art therapy. ... Read more

Easy to read,
5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent tome on single subjectresearch
I used this book almost exclusively for one of my candidacy exam questions in an applied behaviora analysis doctoral program. I had been a bit sketchy on research methodology and felt I needed to bone up on it, so I asked one of my committee members to consider that as a topic and to give me several references from which to study. She recommended Johnston & Pennypacker's Strategies and Tactics of Behavioral Research (1993), Murray Sidman's classic Tactics of Scientific Research (1960), and this one. I had used both the other texts in a class I had, and I knew them to be readable but dense. I started with this one when I began studying for my exam, and it's really the only one I used. Kazdin's language is clear and reader-friendly, especially useful for me being new to research in general, let alone single subject research. Kazdin uses plenty of illustrations, both verbal and graphic, so his explanations are even further clarified. I don't think I can say enough except that this is a great resource on the subject of single subject design. ... Read more
