5-0 out of 5 stars Brutally honest and beautiful.
This book is really incredible. It accruately depicts the symptoms and results (on the author himself, his family, his future)of Schizophrenia, an illness that affects 1 out of every 100 people worldwide.
3-0 out of 5 stars Different from what I expected
From the title, I expected a more encouraging and uplifting story of how this man came to be in control of schizophrenia but, while the voices do eventually stop, I found the majority of this book was neither uplifting or encouraging.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent read, great for book club
We just finished this book in our social work book club. Ken's story was very engaging and enlightenting. It was a page-turner, and very easy to read. This book provided wonderful insight into what it was really like to hear voices and experience the ups and downs of the mental health system over the past three decades. Many of our clients have patient history's similar to Ken and this book reminded us all to be consumer-driven and focused in our work and to continue fighting for better treatment and services for all patients. Ken made a huge impact on the mental health system, and I am thankful this book was published so that we can all remember him and be inspired by his efforts and experiences. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars good if you're a behaviorist
This is the best collection of behaviorist techniques in treating sexual offenders against children. If you're looking for humanist techniques, Amazon has many other good offers.

4-0 out of 5 stars Practical and well written
Salter's book provides the reader with a concisely written guide to diagnosing and working with both Sex Offenders and their victims. She tackles a century worth of documentation on the subject of sex offendersmanaging to simultaneously dispel many of the fallacious argumentsconcerning the disorder while presenting a well informed description ofmost sex offenders. This book is particularly nice in that Salter usesmany real cases from her practice to give the piece more clarity as well asa more human impact that many texts on the subject fail to provide. As ateacher, I found the section on "Identifying Sexually Abused Children"particularly useful.A great read! ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Let's Not Go Completely Overboard
Like pretty much anything in which Neil's involved, this a fine and useful work. The reviews of Teddy Millon's Axis II taxonomic extensions are worth most of the considerable price of admission here all by themselves. But after 30 years in the field, I'll warn any newcomers that getting any too rigid with treatment plan rollouts will make you as nuts at the people you're treating.
5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely essential!
If you write treatment plans then you must have this book.Well organized and easy to follow for any mental health professional. It saves me time and allows me to customize my treatment plans for my clients' individual needs. If you own the DSM-IV, this book is the perfect companion.Regardless of theoretical orientation this book will help you to satisfy the demands of managed care.It is indispensable and, in today's world of managed care, this book is the ultimate time saver. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing Book! I Had Never Connected These Parts of Myself Before
Although I have wondered if I was bipolar for many years now, I was only just diagnosed two days ago by my primary dr. (and referried to a psychologist). After I took the kids to school yesterday, I went out to the book store and looked up books on bipolar. The first one I picked that interested me, I took and sat down with. I kept reading it and reading it and finally decided I had to take it home with me.
5-0 out of 5 stars This is truelly an incredible book
I have bipolar disorder, and also have a mother and sister with it. Educating myself on this illness has been very important to me. I have to say this book is absolutely the best in it's class.
4-0 out of 5 stars Bipolar Handbook
I bought this book shortly after receiving a diagnosis of bipolar.I found that after my diagnosis I was experiencing a lot of emotions in regards to my own misinformation about the disease.

4-0 out of 5 stars Narcissism Unveiled
If you want to learn more about pathological narcissism, borderline conditions and other low-organization personalities - this book is for you. Essentially a textbook, it is a surprisingly interesting read (case studies intersdpersed). Some professional jargon and the book's bias in favour of psychodynamic theories may make best as a second read about narcissism. Sam Vaknin, author of 'Malignant Self Love - Narcissism Revisited'.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent and easy to read
As the college instructor who chose this textbook, I find this book to be one of the most enjoyed by my students. They find it easy to read, interesting, and informative.1-0 out of 5 stars Weak format for a subject with a lot of detail
Most textbooks will have the glossary terms on the sides of the pages for you to have the opportunity to read the definition there as well as within the text. This textbook doesn't do that. They have the whole glossary at the end but that's not real helpful at all for taking notes. The subject itself is confusing with multiple paradigms to approaching the same disorders and so many disorders within the field of Abnormal Psychology.Your not going to get around that but that's all the more reason to get a good textbook that presents the info as clearly as possible. This textbook goes over all the disorders towards the beggining then again later in greater detail, that was a real waste of time and paper. Some subjects in school can be boring and sometimes the teachers can make it more boring, well this subject has a lot of variety of info to learn and the authors make it harder than it has to be. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Hate to burst the bubble....
I purchased this book to gain a better insight about Aspergers.Instead, it left me with many unanswered questions. The book is the equivalent to a boring, monotonous `Dear Diary' that gets stuck in one era: His college years and his interest in music.(This is understandable as the author is terrified of life outside of college, & music is all he knows.)Yet I craved more details, I wanted to know more about Mr. Shores' childhood, his parents, the stims, and the chaos...DETAILS!
5-0 out of 5 stars Quirky? We are all on the autism spectrum!
I have two young children on the autism spectrum. My constant fear and therefore my constant drive is to help them be independent and happy in their lives.Fortunately, both have very mild forms, one PDD and one autism. So, as I watch and learn from their ways of learning, I find that first, I have many quirks, and then can see those quirks in others. It is a fascinating way to look at the differences in how we all learn. In many ways, we are all on the autism spectrum.
5-0 out of 5 stars What It's Like On "The Inside"
As the father of a seven year old son who resides at the light end of the Autism Spectrum, I found Stephens book to be one of the very best I have read by someone who resides on The Spectrum themselves. It is also notable as one of the few autobiographical books by a male. Quite simply put, Stephen's forthrightness is wonderfully disarming. And his very unique ability (especially for someone actually on The Spectrum) to relate not only how the world appears to him but also how that reality fits into the one we nuero-typicals live in, shows an oversight I don't encounter in most typical adults. His positive example is nothing short of a godsend. Beyond giving us hope for our sons, daughters and loved ones who reside with Stephen in this very fascinating place, Stephen's book helps to unravel the mysteries we strive to understand every day. And that Stephen has achieved what he has thus far and has dedicated his life to furthering knowledge about and advocating for the individual on The Spectrum is testimony to this wonderful mans character (and to the loving devotion of his mother, his wife and his mentors!). I only hope my son strives to be half the man Stephen Shore has shown himself to be by this book. If you've just had The "Autism Bomb" fall on you - that is to say, just gotten the diagnosis, you owe it to yourself (and your loved one) to pick up this great book and start thinking positively now at the beginning of your journey, about your gifted child. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Good for the technical information
This book is good in reviewing the technical aspects of creating treatment plans and developing diagnoses. For a book about the art of listening in psychotherapy, read Inside Therapy, for which Irvin Yalom contributes aforeword and discusses the concept of creating "a new therapy for eachpatient."

4-0 out of 5 stars Useful and practical.
I found this book very helpful. It is clear andconcise. It offerspractical interventions along with short term and long term treatmentplans. I wish it were available in the Spanish language.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent but be careful
Jenson's book is excellent in helping you define past abuse and stop minimizing, denying, etc. Her tone is helpful and she shares that she, too, needed healing from childhood neglect. That said, regression therapy can be very dangerous to do alone. Get a sympathetic therapist, one familiar not only with childhood abuse and neglect but Jensen's work, too. I wouldn't recommend doing it all on your own or with non-professionals--the deeper the trauma, the more abuse there was, the more serious the abuse, the more likely you will tap into very strong and deeply buried feelings that can wreck your day, week or month until you work through them. I used the book on my own and had to find a therapist to help me sort through everything.
5-0 out of 5 stars This book will bring peace to your life!
Amazing! This book gives step by step instructions on how to become free of all the emotion baggage that we all accumulate over our lives, especially defense mechanisms (habits) developed in childhood.Tha author also gives enough examples to make her process easier to follow.

5-0 out of 5 stars Yes: Just like the previous reviewers said.....
If it weren't for the reviewers I would have missed it.How does one navigate through the zillions of "self help" books out there to find the real gems? The reviewerspushed me to the purchasing point.(thank you!)The author Jean Jensen shows us real life examples of the stumbling blocks children of abusive parents have as adults, in the workplace and in their love lives. At the end of the book are wonderful examples of people like you and me who explain how they moved through their own personal life struggles with the help of regression therapy.Jean Jenson thoroughly explains her method in a considerate manner and gives a variety ofcovert and overt abusive acts so you will relate, as opposed to deny. You may have to read this a few times because the source of our problems wants us to react in an opposite direction to healing.Jenson helped me see a way out and up, and she certainly covered all the bases to healing, covering many of my questions I could not find answers to with conventional therapy. ... Editorial Review

The violent forms of child abuse that make headlines are not the only ones that leave lifelong scars. A child who grows up in an unstable environment where empathy, clear boundaries and trust are lacking, can end up living a ravaged adulthood. Children can be crippled by mixed messages, family secrets and reversed parent-child roles. Many victims of these practices are not even sure their childhood was abusive. This balanced, practical guide delineates traits of abusive families. Narrative vignettes in each section illustrate and personalize critical issues. Most valuable is the step-by-step self-help program that includes exercises and journal work for recovery. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars book review
The book was informative and helpful. It gave me some real insight into helping my patients. I have also recommended the book to some of my patients.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Resource to Understand How You End up with Your Issues
I remember reading this book over and over again at one point of life, but in retrospect, this book traumatized me in a realization of the issues I was dealing with at the time. I would call this type of book "pathology book" in stead of calling it "recovery book." It helps to understand why certain issues arise, but in life, what you do about it is more important than understanding it. This book left me so sad without a lead to a hope of living. The solution suggested in this book was not effective to me. It would have been better if a book had pathology part and EFFECTIVE treatment part.
5-0 out of 5 stars A much needed prescription for victims
Thank you, Mr. Farmer, for recognizing that the hurt doesn't stop once the abuse does; for me, coping with it as an adult was more difficult than as a child because I now realize with an adult's intelligence and insight, exactly what was being done to me and how horrible it was. So much abuse is undetected until the child grows up and realizes that no, this isn't normal (I didn't realize all families weren't like this) and it WAS wrong. Too many well-meaning people minimize the adult survivor's pain or dismiss it as meaningless: "that was years ago and it's over" "get over it and move on" or the worst, "Just don't dwell on it anymore." If you haven't been abused, you don't get it and never will. thank you, Mr. Farmer, for not only understanding, but for showing us a way out. The focus on child abuse is on children, not the survivors, and we need help too. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Find a Better Book
For the record, this is a book with three different introductions, and each chapter is written by a different author. So you'd think it would represent a fairly broad perspective on various topics.Maybe it does. But I just don't care for the perspectives.5-0 out of 5 stars An invaluable resource
With the second edition of "Children with Autism", Michael Powers has again provided families of children with autism (along with professionals)an invaluable resource for living with, and loving, a child with autism. In straightforward, non-technical language, "Children with Autism" addresses the needs of persons with autism and their families across their lifespan. From diagnosis, to early intervention, to adulthood we are presented with practical information that, in addtion, has a fairly broad research base. I am on my third copy as I keep lending mine out and, for some reason (perhaps the value of the information contained) they never seem to be retained.Highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must read
Dr. Powers has been a major contributor to the understanding of autism spectrum disorders for many years. The ORIGINAL book was one of the few available on the subject at the time of publishing, and while it is NOW outdated, it has been replaced by the current edition published in 2000.This edition contains much useful information that parents will not find elsewhere.I was, therefore, somewhat confused that the reviews for the previous edition are still on this website, as they really describe a different book, which is very misleading. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Essential Resource for Parents, Health Care Professionals, and Direct Support Proviers!
There are none better than Brian Chicoine, MD and Dennis McGuire, Ph.D to write a comprehensive book regarding adults with Down syndrome. The information in this book is founded by research of literature, discussions with experts from around the world, and from hands-on care for over 3000 unique adults with Down syndrome from across the country. The authors are the life-blood of the Adult Down Syndrome Center in Dempster, IL - a one-of-a-kind clinic - and are two people who are doing this work for all the right reasons.
5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Have for Parents and Professionals
I am the mother of a 34 year old daughter with Down syndrome, and this is one of the best books on DS that I have ever seen.It is well written in understandable language and offers practical suggestions and steps to take. The authors of this book have worked with thousands of adults with Down syndrome at the Adult Down Syndrome Center in Illinois, and they really know their stuff. The book touches on all aspects of life for adolescents and adults with DS.There is a lot on what factors influence well-being and how physical problems can affect behavior. It addresses when things are "normal" and when to worry. The book is well organized, so you can go to the sections that apply to your situation. And if the person in your life with DS doesn't have any behavioral issues now, this book can help you keep it that way.I highly recommend this book. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars One of the best and most usable psychiatry texts
I agree with the other favorable reviews. The Lange series in general is amazing--affordable and complete at the same time.I was impressed with the detailed discussion of alternate theories of personality development, the possible etiologies of the mental illnesses, and the theories of drug action. Many psychiatric texts, including the very pricy "standards," tend to be written in a dogmatic, cookbook style. In contrast, the Lange book does not tryto shield the reader from the ambiguity and uncertainty that face anyone treating the mental disorders.5-0 out of 5 stars CAPTIVATING AND WELL-ARRANGED
From infancy to adolescence, it is hard to find any medium-sized book that described developmental psychiatry (and psychology) the way this 640-paged "Current Diagnosis & Treatment in Psychiatry" did.5-0 out of 5 stars Up-to-date , usefull , easy to read and cheap!!!
I'm a medical doctor in my country (Brazil)and I am a general practitioner with a large experience in treating people with psychiatric problems. When I was a medical student my coleagues of university indicated the current books series. At that time this books was very cheap and after read my first book , current medical diagnosis and treatment , I begin to acquire other books of current series.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Essential Information
For any student of modern psychodynamic psychology this isessential to your understanding of "HOW did things get this way"
5-0 out of 5 stars A Way Out of the Darkness
Searching for answers, and a way to break out of the cycle of living in an abusive family, this book is a survivors bible. On every page not only did I find explicit definitions that were easy to understand, but case studies that supported and described the life of one who is born and grows up in a narcissitic family.
4-0 out of 5 stars Narcissistic Families- more Narcissistic Parents...
This was a very good book- a change from all the focus on the person with Narcissistic Personality Disorder. More dealing with family of origin issues that burgeon into other deep problems for people that grow up with parents that have some false ideal or are completely focused on some idealized idea of how their family should be.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book with numerous references
One of the best thought provoking books I have read on BP.
5-0 out of 5 stars Alternative Treatments Work!
I have been researching the drug industry and psychiatry over the past year and have attended a Harvard Medical School seminar to see what is being taught concerning psychopharmacology. What I have learned is that for generations, orthomolecular physicians have been curing mental illness by recognizing that brain malfunctions are caused by medical problems such as thyroid, kidney, and sleep disorder problems, an immune disorder cerebral allergy, metal toxicity, Candida infestation and enzyme and nutritional imbalances such as essential fatty acids deficiency (malnourishment). Biochemical testing can assist in determining underlying causes. Harvard's Dr. Stoll recommends fish oil to provide essential Omega 3 fatty acids and vitamins as an effective treatment for depression.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Introduction to Schizophrenia
This is an important book. It explains what is known about Schizophrenia broadly and includes suggestions for further reading. I can't imagine a better guide for families and consumers, although for professionals, the information is fairly basic. I enjoyed looking through this book because Dr. Torrey writes personably , making it an invaluable resource for those who are surviving Schizophrenia.

5-0 out of 5 stars Torrey's Schizophrenia thorough
