5-0 out of 5 stars Exciting, life-changing reading experience
Alice Miller's "The Body Never Lies" is a provocation for those who are intent on denying that there is a relationship between how children are being treated and how they, later as adults, live their lives. They will fight against this book with those sad beliefs, which they learned in their childhoods and never questioned or left behind. But for those, for whom these connections are a fact and who are willing to explore their own past, their own lives and childhood suffering, this book provides great relief, even liberation. 5-0 out of 5 stars Cut through the Theory and Go to the Heart of What Works
Julie Fast's unique perspective on bi-polar disorder comes from personal experience. In dealing with her own bi-polar disorder, she has personally had to do the challenging work to carve her own path through so she could live a productive life. Reading this book is a short-cut.It cuts through all the theory and goes to the heart of what actually works. If you need real assistance in dealing with the disorder yourself or if you need to know how to deal with a loved one who has bi-polar disorder, this book sends you life line. It lays out a step by step, practical approach that you can use as a handbook to guide you as you carve your own path through your individual challenge with bi-polar disorder.

5-0 out of 5 stars A plan for surviving and THRIVING
I was one of the lucky people who read an advance copy...and I was determined to be the first person to reveiw this amazing, life saving book on Amazon.Readers of Fast's and Preston's other book on Bipolar disorder (loving someone with bipolar) will be thrilled to finally get a detailed, step-by-step, super-in-depth plan that gently guides them to health. And for family members, this book will save relationships and marriages. The two things about this book that set it apart from anything else on the market that deals with bipolar disorder are 1)BIPOLAR CONVERSATIONS -- example: how do you talk to your teenage daughter/ mother/ spouse when they she's ready to kill herself, or manic, or sexually out of control?Fast and Preston, through their vast experiences and decades of dealing with this illness, show us what conversations work, and also HOW NOTto deal with those we love... and 2) sidebar stories from both bipolar patients and family members who have survived the devastating effects of this illness. They tell you what worked for them, where they were in their lives when they made the choice to take charge and get well.Especially powerful was the story written by Fast's brother.Actually, I found myself skipping ahead through the book and reading all the stories of the people who have this illness -- as well as the family member stories.Of course, I went back and read the whole book cover to cover.BUY THIS BOOK. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Revealing and inspiring look at what it means to parent a disabled child
I've just listened to Mary Beth and Megan on the Diane Rehm Show and was very moved by their openness in describing their sons with Fragile X and their life with them, how they parent these sons, searched for the best education and medical care for them, and how they have found meaning and joy in their sons, despite their severe disabilities. Their book is an inspiration to all parents with disabled children.

5-0 out of 5 stars A "must read" for all Fragile X families!
This is the book that all of the families in the Fragile X community have been waiting to read. These letters between two women tell us the story of their personal griefs and triumphs; but they tell us so much more. The chapter called Dropping Bread Crumbs explains Fragile X for the layman more clearly than you've ever heard it explained before. We will all relate to the devastating news of the diagnosis in the chapter called Diagnosis and Dealing. And we will admire the courage of Kelly Randels' chapter on the hearbreak of facing an abortion. These women have the courage to tell us what we need to know; and the talent to keep you riveted throughout their journey in a world that has been defined for them by Fragile X.A extraordinary accomplishment.

5-0 out of 5 stars A most remarkable, touching, educational, moving book
This is an incredible book.Mary Beth met Megan at a conference for parents of children with Fragile X, and decided to write to her.Mary Beth wrote to Megan, and in her letter, she quotes Margaret Mead:"Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world."And, indeed they have. They have also exchanged these simple, yet powerful letters. -- letters that talk about daily life, advice to each other, their family histories, the nature of Fragile X, the pain of Mother's Day, the nature of what is a home -- an endless array of interesting subjects. But these letters reveal so much more, namely, their courage, their disappointments, their tenacity, their truthfulness, their endless ability to love. It is a book that shows the human spirit at its best and is an inspiration to us all. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Shelf Study Tool!
This book is a "must have" to do well on the psychiatry shelf exam. It highlights all of the important points without being overwhelming. This is a great buy!

4-0 out of 5 stars Solid content for psych clerkship
This was the best resource I found made for a third year med student.I felt confident answering my attending's questions, and I got an 86 on the NBME shelf (after bombing the surgery exam) by constantly studying this text.Blueprints was too skimpy, while NMS was too dense and seemed to regurgitate DSM guidelines. The book, typical of the First Aid series, gives good overviews of common diseases while hitting those testable pearls of wisdom that are rarely seen on the wards but often on exams (like the priapisms associated with trazodone). It was weak, however, on general medical conditions (GMCs) which could cause psychiatric-like illnesses. The NBME shelf is about 80% psychiatry with several other questions covering neurological diseases, nonpsychatric meds, etc.I would also recommend supplementing this text with some reading on GMCs; NMS actually has a chapter devoted to GMCs which is well made.I would also do practice questions (Blueprints Q&A was better than Pretest or A&L in simulating difficulty and format) just to cement the knowledge. For your white coat, the Current Clinical Guidelines is good for writing notes, DSM guidelines, and treatment protocols.First Aid, however, is the best foundation. You can read it and have a life.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book saved my life.
I am trying not to cry while writing this review because of the incredible impact this great work of Judith Herman has had on my life.I first read the book 4 years ago (I was 19 at the time), at the suggestion of my therapist.Today it remains one of only two books on the topic that I have kept.I will never let go of this book.
5-0 out of 5 stars Saved My Life
First let me say that this is NOT a "self-help" book and should not be purchased as such.As most of the other reviews here will attest, it is a wonderful book for therapists, clergy, or other professionals who work with survivors of trauma. It is also wonderful for anyone who is having difficulty understanding why a battered woman doesn't "just leave" her abuser (read about "Stockholm Syndrome" and traumatic bonding). It is a clear and easy read, but it is an educational book, not a self-help book.It was required reading in my college Crisis Intervention class, but it also helped me understand that I was not "crazy" for feeling the way I felt after living through an abusive relationship myself.I found that learning about the abuser/victim or captor/captive relationship was very empowering and normalizing for me and was an important step in my own recovery from captivity.I was amazed by the commonalities between domestic abuse, hostage situations, and living as a POW.If you are someone who helps people overcome this type of trauma, please read this book and teach them about the research that has been done.Help them realize that what they are going though is normal, that it was not due to their own personality flaws or weaknesses that they did not "just leave", and that, above all, they are not crazy.
4-0 out of 5 stars A Reader's Review
Trauma and Recovery: The Aftermath of Violence-from Domestic Abuse to Political Terror by Judith Herman, M.D. is a book that puts together not only how victims of trauma have historically received care but also constructs a practical paradigm for providing care for the traumatized in today's world.

5-0 out of 5 stars Book description incorrect
The book description and some of the reviews do not refer to this text. The book primarily reviews development of theory and then presents an overview of various nursing grand and middle range theories, followed by theories from biological, behavioral, education, management, and sociology that are useful and applicable to nursing.

1-0 out of 5 stars Index is poor, poor, poor.
Nice text; well-written, but the ridiculous index makes this somewhat of a joke. Whoever wrote the index (looks author-generated?) doesn't know the purpose/function of an index.

5-0 out of 5 stars Brilliant Analysis, but poor edition
Foucault employs an exacting and yet artistic methodology of historical-sociological interpretation of the history of madness in the age of reason. In this impressive work, he discovers that the origin of insanity, of psychological confinement, corresponds with the diminution of leprosy in Europe, and that the sectors of institutional power sought to find another means of normalization and social control through the imprisonment, and public degradation of the mentally ill, the poor, and the homeless. This power dynamic later manifests itself in the form of absolute confinement and normalcy, in which the insane were subjected to physiological experimentation, which marks an apparent disregard for Descartes' mind-body distinction. Foucault skillfully outlines the means of psychological repair through the exploration of the balancing of the four humors, to the revealing of insanity's non-being and non-reason through its release to the ultimate freedom of nature. Foucault then examines the transition of psychology from the real of biological-intellectual non-reason, to the imposition of moral and religious absolutism and the birth of the asylum, and finally to the (perhaps salvation) of Freud and psychoanalysis, in which the patient-doctor relationship is recreated as a mode of observation, not judgment or condescension, "he made it the Mirror in which madness, in an almost motionless movement, clings to and casts off itself" (pg. 278). Foucault's Madness and Civilization represents an important breakthrough in the field of post-modern philosophy; it is truly an excellent work of scholarship and profound insight.
5-0 out of 5 stars category mistakes
Certain reviewers of this book seem to confuse the categories of operation Focualt addresses in this book and others. He is not making the simplistic argument that "madness" is socially constructed but rather that certain concepts, including the medicalized model of insanity, only become possible under cetain conditions and operate within a specific, historical and culutral formation of knowledge. Understanding what these conditions are, and how these change is important both to become critical concerning the limitations of current organizations of these concepts, but also so that one does not anachronistically project present concepts into the past, ie, seeing 18th century discourses as premature versions of today's ideas. The problem of madness as an object of knowledge is his task within the history of ideas, not discerning its reality.2-0 out of 5 stars Revising Foucaultian Revisionism
Immensely popular and influential among left-wing American cultural critics, this book has been critiqued ravishly by French psychologists. The gist of their critique is that the book represents more of the values and concerns of Foucault rather than an accurate and responsible history of mental illness.Foucault's central argument that society defines sane and insane behavior is an old cliche in cultural anthropology.Furthermore, recent advances in cognitive science and psychiatry challenge Foucault's position by affirming that mental illness is exactly that, namely, "an illness."Simply stated, there is so much cross-cultural evidence that certain psychiatric disorders are univeral and not, therefore, specific to cultures but biologically grounded.Various mental illnesses have been verified biologically as illnesses in the same way that biologically illnesses are also recognizable as physical illnesses.Foucault is sometimes touted as a "cutting-edge" thinker, but his ideas were dated before he wrote them down.Erving Goffman's book "Asylums" is an earlier and far better treatment of the cultural dynamics of mental institutions, and Ruth Benedict argued (in 1930) that insanity is often a cultural construct rather than a physical malady. The basics of Foucault's ideas can also be seen in the writing of Shakespeare, Cervantes, Montaigne, and other Renaissance writers--about 400 years ago.The moral dimensions of Foucault's fraud are only now being explored, and this writer's currently trendy reputation is not likely to stand the test of time. This book is a good example of ways in which trendy writing and intellectual fads can quickly be discovered to be mere cliches.Intellectual dubiousness aside, the major problems with this tome deal with Foucault's romanticization of mental illness. In placing "insanity" in quotes, Foucault is arguing that it is one more mental condition -- no better nor worse than sanity. This view is intellectually suspect, at best, and downright dangerous at worst. It seems that Foucault is writing to shock and self-aggrandize his own self. This shouldn't be surprising when even a cursory read of his biography reveals that Foucault had all sorts of loathsome predilections, including praise for Mao, Stalin, and Khomeni as well as stated opposition to age of consent laws and support for eugenics, not to mention his passionate involvement in S&M and LSD trips. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Basic Text of SCA, not SAA
Just as claraification: This book was written by anonymous members of the group Sexual Compulsives Anonymous (SCA) and is the basic text of that group.I am a member of SCA and I have found this book extremely helpful.I would recommend it to anyone, both on the basis of a standalone book and and a possible introduction to what SCA is about.

4-0 out of 5 stars It's not the basic text of SAA
I was checking out some recovery books on Amazon and noticed this review about "Hope and Recovery".I'm a member of Sex Addicts Anonymous and "Hope and Reovery" IS NOT the basic text of that fellowship. It is read, but it's not the basic text.If you read the Steps and Traditions in the book, and really the rest of the book, nowhere is Sex Addicts Anonymous ever mentioned in those pages.I'm not saying "don't read Hope and Recovery," I just want to make it clear that it's not the basic text of SAA.5-0 out of 5 stars A very in-depth tool book of recovery for sexual addiction.
Hope & Recovery is the current basic text of SAA (Sex Addicts Anomyous, a twelve-step group for sexually recovering people). The book is designed for individuals who feel that they are sexually compusive and are looking for information on the addictive disease and "tools" to use to become and remain free from sexual addiction. Each of the twelve steps is explained in detail on how they can be lived daily for sexual recovery. A number of individuals tell their own experiences of how they lived their disease, discovered the hope of the program, and how they are currently living a life of recovery. The book is well written, sensitive, hopeful, and a continual must read through the journey of recovery. Definately Hope & Recovery. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A very detailed report on specific educational interventions
This book is based on a report of research conducted by a committee of select members from the National Academies. While it does appear quite techincal, it provides a good resource for anyone attempting to put toghether a good educational program for their autistic child. It's a must have book for knowing what needs to, and can be, put into a child's IEP.If you are using an attorney or advocate to put together your child's IEP, make sure they have a copy of this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars This is the book your school district has - you need it too!
Although I do not necessarily agree with EVERYTHING that is written in this book, I do appreciate the way it was put together and the information shared. 5-0 out of 5 stars A profound and arresting analysis of interventions
My contact with autistic children and teenagers is primarily through research into social skills teaching.I have a assembled a small library of key texts and until I read this one, I found my library incomplete in one area - a review of intervention programmes. This book is simply superb is its coverage of the various principles that inform current interventions, its analysis of the outcomes of several commonly cited progrmmes, and the scope for future work.

1-0 out of 5 stars Nutrition or just plain nutty?
This book seems to be full of formulae for curing mental illnesses. After I finished reading it, I tried to look up "pyroluria" in the Merck Manual and several reputable nutrition books...it wasn't listed. Then I checked the internet and found plenty of listings, but only circular information, as though the writers relied on this book rather than doing original research. Another case of "let the buyer beware"! If you must read this book, try to find it in the library, I wish I had!

1-0 out of 5 stars Outmoded, Outdated, and Out of Business...
Wow, I am amazed at the allure the Brain Bio Center still has after all these years. Its very existence seems to be hotly contested in this forum. Please allow me to settle this question once and for all. My Mom was a patient at the BBC and a former neighbor was an employee. However before I go any further, I should say that despite the "Princeton" attachment, BBC was never affiliated with Princeton University, which has no medical school. It wasn't even within Princeton's city limits; it actually was located in neighboring Montgomery Township (Skillman). But that is not surprising. Entities from churches to multi-million dollar companies who are physically in other municipalities have added "Princeton" to their names and/or rented PO Boxes to obtain a Princeton mailing address just to cash in on the prestige of the Princeton name. This is a very common practice in Central New Jersey. It is all marketing, hype, and horse feathers.
5-0 out of 5 stars Do not believe "Kinda fishy" review, it is incorrect
I did some research on what this reviewer said and found a few things. Reviewers said the Brain Bio Center was supposed to be in Skillman, NJ, but it says on the back of the book it was in Princeton, NJ. Reviewer said it was not listed in the phonebook. It's not likely because it is no more. The Brain Bio Center operator from 1972 until the early 80's. That would also account for there not being a web page for it. Unlike reviewer says, the full name of the institution is not "The Princeton Brain Bio Center". It is just "The Brain Bio Center" and it happened to be in Princeton. Reviewer said it is not associated with Princeton University and neither did the bio claim to be. The bio says "it is sponsored by the Schizophrenia Foundation of New Jersey and the New Jersey Mental Health Research and Development Fund".

5-0 out of 5 stars A sympathetic voice

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent source of info on one aspect of bipolar treatment
This book should be read by anyone trying to optimize treatment of bipolar disorder through the use of cognitive-behavioral therapy. In fact it should be read both by patients and by therapists and possibly psychiatrists too.The book is well written, well organized, and fairly easy to understand. It is not intended to be a comprehensive guide to surviving bipolar disorder- if the reader wants a comprehensive guide, see Torrey's "Surviving Manic Depression" and Miklowitz's "Bipolar Disorder Survival Guide".But for just learning about cognitive-behavioral therapy, this book is excellent.Avery Z. Conner, author of "Fevers of the Mind".

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellentinsight into the damaging abuse process
This is a landmark book, many papers written based upon this book are now famous. For those well read in child abuse psychopathology, this book explains how and to what extent the damage is done to children of abuse.
3-0 out of 5 stars Caveat Emptor
Although deeply literate, thought provoking, and full of interesting and penetrating observations, formulations, and interpretations, I recommend this book only to those who already well-read in the area of childhood trauma.5-0 out of 5 stars a map of the badlands
I've read this book several times, and find it very useful to understand and to undo the effects of trauma. Shengold speaks to me personally as the one-time member of an abusive family, and professionally as a psychoanalyst who works with people who have been abused. This book is painful to read attimes, and is probably better read in small sections at a time, so that itcan be felt and digested. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Very useful
I purchased this book for a psychology class and I found it easy to read and easy to implement the suggestions offered within the book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent, practical methodology
this book is very well-organized and easy to read. it is comprehensive and thoroughly addresses all the possible components to an intake interview that one could imagine! sections of particular interest to me were how to address sensitive subjects and how to get patients to get in touch with feelings (people are often too much in their heads), mental status exam aspects, signs and symptoms, and dealing with difficult patients (lying, hostility, etc.). also useful was information on presenting findings once all the data gathering is done. great resource for students just getting started in the field of behavioral health, as well as medical students assessing potential psychological aspects to a patient's presentation and the need for a referral to a behavioral health practitioner. also helpful when creating documents, such as during the transition to private practice or an administrative position responsible for organization of information/compliance with professional evaluation standards, especially with increasing pressure from accrediting agencies....in other words, a great resource for ALL clinicians!

5-0 out of 5 stars Written by a great academic teacher
A wonderful book! I have an MA in Psychology (and a PhD in an unrelated field) and have been working in emergency psychiatric evaluations for two years now. This is the one most helpful book that I have found on the question: How do I talk to a person for one hour and know what's going on with them psychiatrically?
