4-0 out of 5 stars A Social Work Must
The information on treatment in direct practice of Social Work is a valuable tool for our helping profession.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Have Reference
This book is excellent! It is very reader friendly and practical; not only does it describe the disorders thoroughly but it also discusses typical client characteristics, preferred therapist characteristics, tells intervention strategies that research has found works best for the particular disorder, and then provides a detailed treatment plan, along with, a case study. I found this book to be very useful for counseling professionals and students. It is also helpful when studying for the NCE Or NMHCE exam!

5-0 out of 5 stars First-class resource for the mental health practioner.

3-0 out of 5 stars a real missed opportunity
This book is, at best, mediocre and I agree with the reviewer who said it costs too much.A well-written, well-chosen, well-edited series of essays on overshopping would have been worth the price. Not this relatively simplistic analysis.
5-0 out of 5 stars An In-depth Illuminating Survey of Thoughts, Theories & Treatment for an Important Topic
I greatly appreciate Dr. Benson's survey of essays on the topic of shopping and compuslive overshopping. This book is chock-full of interesting articles that have really opened my eyes about these issues that are far too often dismissed as silly. The trend toward increasing debt and overshopping is enormous and Dr. Benson appears to be at the forefront of sounding the alarm. This book is not a quick read. I received it almost a year ago and am still re-reading much of it. But I highly recommend it, especially for therapists like myself, and for anyone who thinks he or she might have a problem with shopping or spending. Thank you Dr. Benson for your knowledge, passion, and ability to bring many diverse articles and essays into one book.

1-0 out of 5 stars Bright lights, big city
Surely we all realize -- or at least those of us who acquainted with reality -- that the medicalizing of everyday life is wildly out of hand. We have now reached the low and comical state where this quack Benson can claim, with a straight face, that buying and returning products is a biochemical disorder. And Costco, with its lifetime return policy, must be the devil herself. If P.T. Barnum were alive today he would surely be a mental health professional so he could invent suckers instead of waiting for them to appear. How Barnum would marvel that insurance companies and the government now pay innovative scam artists.

2-0 out of 5 stars Way overpriced for what it offers!!!
This volume is an expansion of the oblique DSM IV-TR and delves into the etiology and treatment of mental illness, in addition to diagnosis. The etiology is of course purely theoretical, and the treatment is set by the marketing strategies that target psychiatrists, and by skewed studies sponsored mostly by the pharmaceutical companies. The DSM IV-TR is a great book to promote diseases that fit the armaments of medications that the pharmaceutical companies would like physicians to use.

5-0 out of 5 stars My husband's secret revealed..I needed answers..I found them here!!
Easily, I could say that Patrick Carne's books on sexual addiction has saved my marriage and my husband's life and maybe my own as well. My first read was "Out of the Shadows" and it softened my angry heart after hearing my husbands confession of being with around 100 women over the past 5 years of our 17 year marriage and all sexual encounters were UNPROTECTED sex. I found out the hard way. How could all these powerful, crippling emotions that I was feeling be tamed?? How could I ever forgive this scrum of the earth!! READ this book and you can do the impossible!!
5-0 out of 5 stars As an Addiction Therapist I recommend this book to all of my clients seeking recovery from addiction to sex
Carnes can be readily credited for leading the way in developing a sound understanding of sex addiction and importantly, the treatment of this. By presenting sexually destructive behaviour within the paradigm of "addiction", Carnes has succesfully created a "problem to solution" model which offers a way out of sexually addictive behaviour. In "Don't Call it Love" Carnes offers a plan for living and a route out of this powerfully compelling condition. He manages to present a readable and coherent guide, outlining the multiple dimensions of both sex addiction and recovery from this. In his usual realisitic and compassionate style, this book makes it clear that the process of abstinence and recovery is concerned with helping "Good people get well" rather than helping "Bad people be good". Fundamentally, this book offers a clear message of hope to any person affected by sex addiction that recovery is indeed possible and importantly - enjoyable !!

5-0 out of 5 stars A Life-Changing Book for Many People
"Don't Call It Love," by Patrick Carnes, is an important book in the growing body of literature on recovery from sexual addiction. Although it was published in 1991, it is still widely read and frequently quoted by recovering sex addicts.

5-0 out of 5 stars A wonderful law enforcement field guide
Obviously the author of the one star review has had some negative experience with regards to the subject matter of this book. To call the information "outdated" is ludicrous in that so little information has been available for so long. Those that have participated in the web of deceit referred to as Munchausen's Syndrome find it difficult to accept the truth and are often on the offensive with anyone that possesses the knowledge of this disorder and its existance. Their anger and resentment is further exacerbated when this information is conveyed in any logical, fact based manner.

1-0 out of 5 stars Over-priced and Out Dated!
This witch-hunt is over. The creator of MSBP (Roy Meadow) has been exposed and discredited for his "fanciful tales" and courts all over the UK are overturning convictions. Courts in the US are recognizing that this is not a diagnosis accepted by any medical establishment. 5-0 out of 5 stars An important work from an acknowledged expert in the field.
Detective Artingstall is well-known for her body of writings and her experience in Munchausen syndrome and Munchausen by proxy cases. In this authoritative work, she provides insights and practical assistance missingfrom most other books on the subject.Legal forms, lists of pertinentquestions to ask as cases are examined, and summaries of chapter highlightsare among the useful elements of the book. The book is also liberallydotted with case studies, including legal outcomes.Although thecopy-editing is not as thorough as I would have liked, the content of thebook is outstanding.Detective Artingstall's book will be an often-citedresource for practitioners of multiple disciplines--social work, lawenforcement, nursing, medicine, child protection, and more.Whilefactitious disorder and Munchausen syndrome have been long-acknowledged inthe professional literature, the type of abuse called Munchausen by proxyhas been recognized and studied only within the last 2 decades.Works suchas this one--based on a mastery of the literature, a wealth of personalexperience, and an abiding desire to uncover the truth (no matter howdisturbing)--will be invaluable in irrefutably establishing Munchausen byproxy as a public health and criminal-justice issue that requires ourcareful attention. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Good book for parents
A good book for parents. In the social skills intervention we developed, I recommend a range of books for parents based on their accessibility and general sensitivity to parents needs. This book is one of the ones in that basket - there aren't many. I would also recommend reading Succeeding with Interventions for Asperger Syndrome Adolescents.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very helpful and informative!
This book is practical and helpful. I have learned more about the areas I need to be targeting with my son. It has also increased my awareness of more of the things my son faces on a daily basis and how to approach them better.
4-0 out of 5 stars very complete reference
Offers a good background of asperger response to the real world and also gives a number of suggestions on how to support the person and or make their world more liveable. The suggestions are able to be done by family and school. Most of them do not require any special techniques or equipment, just an understanding of AS and the people if affects. ... Editorial Review

From Kay Redfield Jamison - an international authority on manic-depressive illness, and one of the few women who are full professors of medicine at American Universities - a remarkable personal testimony: the revelation of her own struggle since adolescence with manic depression, and how it shaped her life. With vivid prose and wit, she takes us into the fascinating and dangerous territory of this form of madness - a world in which one pole can be the alluring dark land ruled by what Byron called the "melancholy star of the imagination," and the other a desert of depression and, all too frequently, death. ... I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It helped me understand manic depression better and it was written in a very personable way. Highly recommended!

5-0 out of 5 stars this book changed my life
even years after being diagnosed with BP, I still felt....just 'misunderstood'. After reading through this book, I found myself yelling in my head THAT'S ME!!!!! she's talking about me!
5-0 out of 5 stars Kudos for Courage
Like it or not, human nature tends to box and label people, and unveiling mental illness carries a threat of permanent stigma.I applaud Dr. Jamison's courage in exposing her affliction with manic-depressive illness.Unlike many others who suffer from this disorder, she has survived, learned to cope and effectively manage medication; she has maintained her professional credibility and salvaged creativity.Yes, she's been fortunate, but by sharing her personal wisdom in AN UNQUIET MIND, Kay Redfield Jamison offers hope! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Facing Reality
Dr. Carnes is a noted authority and perhaps the premier researcher in the area of sexual addiction. His work goes back easily some twenty years.I have studied with Dr. Carnes and I can say with some authority that this may be his finest work.It is the fruit of much thought and labor. It is reality.Carl Rogers said:"Until we can accept ourselves as we really are we can't change."This book, really a work book, helps the addicted person do just that. But it doesn't stop there. The addict is able to see through the work he does that he is able, through healthy activities, to regain control of his life. This is the second edition.Dr. Carnes demonstrates not only his high standards of authorship, but his humility and ability to accept constructive criticism both from within himself and I think perhaps others, in the changes he has put into this second edition. They are well worth the effort.Dr. Carnes comes at the sexual addiction issue with clarity, research, and above all empathy. His other work "The Recovery Zone,"will I think prove to be as well received as this work.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Resource for Adult ADHD
As a co-owner of the ADDvisor, we hosted a teleconference featuring Dr. Lenard Adler in May. Dr. Adler was a very engaging speaker and provided many valuable insights into adult ADHD. Dr. Adler's new book, Scattered Minds, highlights both his knowledge about ADHD with writing that is both accessible and readable. This goes for professionals as well as the general public. In understandable terms, Dr. Adler describes the neurobiology of ADHD, the co-existing conditions that often accompany ADHD, medications and complimentary treatments and alternative treatments. 'Scattered Minds' can be used as a reference for questions as they come up or can be read cover-to-cover. Either way, your book shelf will be more valuable as you collect your resources about ADHD.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very useful information, but does have some shortcomings
This is a unique book in that it presents how to become disentangled from a relationship with someone who has borderline personality disorder. Most books are aimed at the person with BPD and not the people on the receiving end of the dysfunctional behavior.I can see where this is very helpful, for many people and the advice is sound.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very useful and well written
Very useful and understandable, practical tool and method. It is welcomed as an assett to the counseling profession

5-0 out of 5 stars This is a case examples book, not a text.
I read the criticisms from other readers and felt that they didn't understand the intention of the book. They wanted an explanation of how to do EMDR, and this is a casebook of examples not a text.If you want to understand how to do EMDR, you have to read the textbook by Dr. Shapiro that explains the procedures and protocols. If you want to actually do EMDR, you have to take the class.I did last year, and because I haven't practiced I am taking it again. It's not something you want to try on your own.
5-0 out of 5 stars a therapy that gives hope
This is a well studied and important psychological modality which appears to be little known to the lay population. This book is clear and easily read. 5-0 out of 5 stars Fills a unique niche
I applaud John McManamy for writing an excellent, insightful and information packed book!John has the unique perspective of not only being a very knowledgeable authority on depression and bipolar disorder, but also a consumer himself because of his diagnosis. He is brutally honest about issues ranging from medications, the role of sleep in wellness, the seriousness of the illness . . . there is no sugar coating or glossing over topics. At the same time, John intersperses the book with a refreshing sense of humor and candor.Unlke many books that present the facts in a dry clinical format, this book will bring a smile to your face or have you laughing out loud at comments such as "anyone taking ***** with either of these drugs is simply begging for an audition as the next Macy's Santa" (in reference to medication induced weight gain).

5-0 out of 5 stars Vastly More Than a Text--The Future of Mankind's Mind
This is an extraordinary book that I selected in part based on Amazon's own extraordinary "referal" system.I have been richly rewarded.Although the book is completely out of my field, it has some blinding insights pertinent to my field, which is that of saving mankind by actualizing the World Brain envisioned by H. G. Wells.
5-0 out of 5 stars Fascinating synthasis of neuroscience with analytic-based psychiatry
Eight truly fascinating essays by Nobel Prize-winning psychiatrist and neurobiologist Eric Kandel. An incredible overview of how biology must influence psychiatric thought.

5-0 out of 5 stars My Favorite Book on Multicultural Psychology
I bought this book years ago when it first came out.It remains my favorite text on multicultural psychology, and it has plenty of clinical insights that I've never found elsewhere.Apparently, it didn't become a classic, but it SHOULD have, along with it's companion, "Meanings of Madness."I think it is just a little too brilliant and insightful to fit easily into the standard, stale multicultural zeitgeist.

Editorial Review

"A bright red scream" is how one of the subjects Marilee Strong interviews in this chilling yet compassionate study of self-mutilation describes the sensation of intentionally inflicting pain upon oneself. It is a compulsion that, while shocking and bewildering to most people, affects 2 million or more Americans and countless others around the globe--one of whom, the late Princess Diana, also suffered from the eating disorders that characterize between 35 to 80 percent of all cutters. Rejecting the classic psychiatric wisdom that views self-mutilation as a species of suicidal behavior, Strong links the phenomenon instead to the will to live--often in the face of such overwhelming childhood abuse that the resulting dissociative behaviors are something akin to posttraumatic stress disorder. Strong touches on other issues as well: Why are most cutters women? And is the current fascination with tattooing and piercing, from its most extreme forms in the "alternative" culture to its growing mainstream acceptance, a sublimation of the cutters' instinct? Through interviews with more than 50 self-injurers, Strong tells the moving story not only of their rage and self-punishment, but also of the courageous journey towards reintegration. (The book also contains an introduction by psychiatrist Armando R. Favazza, author of Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Boring...
I've been cutting myself since I was 14, now I'm 24. I'm currently writing my own book about self-injury and personally I felt this book was boring. I pushed myself to continue to read it and by the end of the book it ended up being just another book on my shelf.
5-0 out of 5 stars Powerful and informative read
this book was recommended to me by a patient who struggled with self-injurious behavior. i thank him to this day and have recommended the book to numerous patients and parents of adolescents who self-mutilate. this book is a graphic and eye-opening depiction of the epidemic that self-mutilation has become. notions of self-injury as strictly "attention seeking" are outdated, and this book explores the origins of self-mutilation, its reinforcing value for the injurer, and ways in which sufferers have conquered this seemingly compulsive behavior. it's also a great resource for friends and family members of those who self-injure, as it sheds some light on the inner workings of these individuals and can, thereby, create increased understanding and empathy for the psychological and emotional struggles that underlie self-mutilation. though self-mutilation can be seen as a very primitive behavior, it's expression can be very complicated and not easily understood by those who have never felt such intense emotionality. this is a highly recommended read. as others have noted, however, this book is not for the faint of heart. i also appreciated conterio and lader's book entitled *bodily harm: the breakthrough healing program for self-injurers.*

5-0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive and intriguing, this is a book for self-injurers and those who care about them
Strong's book is a comprehensive look at self-mutilation, providing dozens of personal profiles interspersed with medical history, mass psychological studies, expert opinions, and treatment philosophies and experiences.Strong herself is a journalist, but she's gained the respect and cooperation of self-mutilation psychiatrist and expert Amrando Favazzo, who wrote the introduction to the book.As the reviews reveal, many cutters have identified with this book, found solace in the fact they are not alone, and been able to seek help after reading the book. This book is not just for self-injurers and their loved ones, however, it is a well-done work of non-fiction appropriate for anyone who wants to learn more about medical conditions and treatments.
