2-0 out of 5 stars Unwieldy, unhelpful
Some people swear by this book; I don't get it.It's a pain to either read or to use as a referenceThe layout of this book is busier than that of an undergraduate textbook. For no apparent reason, brain images are slapped into sections of some disorders and not others.Ditto for lists of empirical studies. The authors feel it necessary to reprint as a box the DSM-IV criteria for every disorder--only the box appears in different places for different chapters. In fact, the structure of each chapter seems somewhat different, even across chapters on similar disorders.I'm not really sure about this, though, as the organizational structure of the chapters continues to elude me.And it definitely lacks some information that most people would find helpful. For instance, there are (I believe) only two decision trees in this 1400 page opus. And lots of space is wasted. It's unclear what the first 250 or so pages are doing in this book, doing a slapdash job of covering the entire lifecycle, the brain, Jean Piaget, Freud, IQ testing, and anthropology. These are bracketed by chapter 1, on interviewing, and chapter 7, on doing clinical examinations. Why those two chapters are not consecutive is anyone's guess.Do I need to go into the writing? It fluctuates between platitudes and stupefying detail. The case histories are well-written, but they are generally taken from the DSM-IV Casebook.
5-0 out of 5 stars Synopsis of Psychiatry: Behavioral Sciences/Clinical Psychiatry
This is an excellent book.It was purchased for a social work class I was taking - Psychopathology and was used along with the DSM -IV-TR and was a great resource above and beyond the DSM.It is also very useful in my current job.It not only outlines all of the mental disorders in a easy to understand - detailed way, but it goes beyond that so that you have a real understanding of cause and effect.I would recommend this book to anyone who works with clients that need a diagnosis. It is a social work bible.

5-0 out of 5 stars Condesed version of Big book, cutting out the fat
As known by many, Kaplan and Kaplan (or Kaplan and Sadock's) comprehensive textbook of psychiatry is pretty much the gold standard text book for the history and diagnosis of psychiatric illness used by all residencies and medical schools in the USA.This book is a thinned soft bound edition summary of the 2 volume comprehensive book. With this book, you still get many of the helpful tables, all of the information, and at half the price. This is no substitute for the Big book, but if you read this prior to any shelf exam in medical school, or as the basis for starting research into a disease in residency, you will have a good basis and diretion so your future searches will be easier, and the exams simple.Highly recommended, very good investment for Family Medicine, Internal Medicine, and OB-Gyn residents/students to have on a shelf, and essential to psychiatric residents/students.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great teaching aid for clinical psychology students
Great way to see how the DSM-IV criteria apply to real cases. Beware, this is the exact same (with exception to the references to the DSM-IV-TR page numbers) as the 1994 DSM-IV Casebook. So, if you already own the older version, don't bother wasting your money.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Bathroom Book
This is a great book with real-life case vignettes illustrating presentations of most of the diagnoses in DSM-IV-TR. Though initially skeptical, given the contrived case names, the book is excellent. Each case is followed by a discussion of the DSM-IV diagnostic issues raised. An especially neat part of the book is a presentation of historic cases from Blueler, Freud, and others, as well as international cases. Each case is self-contained so the book can be read in a three minute sitting.
5-0 out of 5 stars informative and actually somewhat fun
I found this book to provide excellent supplemental info to the "DSM-IV-TR" itself. Written case studies, though no substitute for living, breathing subjects, actually provide a good deal of help in learning to apply the diagnoses in the "DSM-IV-TR". Highly recommended for anyone who wants to learn how to properly apply these diagnoses or learn more about psychiatry in general. I found it actually kind of fun.Avery Z. 3-0 out of 5 stars Easy-to-read textbook detailnig the counseling process
Hackney & Cormier offer a simple stage presentation of counseling that explains the process to readers in a revealing way. Each stage is detailed, and various intervention genres are explored. At times, howeverthe book does not flow well. The authors do not take enough time to showhow each aspect of counseling ties together.Hackney & Cormier, however, are sensitive -- almost to a fault -- to multicultural issues.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great at process; tainted at points by political correctness
I've used this as a text for two years to teach the process of counseling at the undergraduate level. It's quite good at setting forth an understandable five-step process of counseling. The taint of politicalcorrectness rears its ugly head at points when the authors tacitly presumethe morality of homosexual unions--but these can instances can be bracketedoff. Most in need of rework is chapter nine on behavioral interventions;undergraduates find it difficult to digest this as written. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Interesting, no-nonsense, and engaging.
This book is very interesting. As the title implies -- sociopaths seem to be "everywhere", for lack of a better word. But the book, in my opinion, is not meant to sensationalize or to scare -- in fact, I found it very informative. It's also not boring to read.Even if you aren't a Psychology buff (as I'm not) it is layman-friendly and doesn't use a lot of jargon from her field; and, when she does, Dr. Stout takes time to explain. She uses plenty of examples and takes a no-nonsense approach.
5-0 out of 5 stars Conscience Or Superego?
Despite the marketing of the book as a "how to" in isolating destructive types conquering your life in which it succeeds..the book itself is also a lucid study in dealing with the questions surrounding human motivation, nature nurture arguements, inflation of ego,the clash between rugged individualism and the common good as well as clarity in outlining the arguments with evolutionary biology and psychology as to the future of mankind and the creation of a just society based on conscience.
5-0 out of 5 stars If you deal with people, you need this book
Remarkable insight and non-judgmental. Anyone in a profession that deals directly with people, i.e.. teachers, lawyers, human resource, etc. should read this book. Although it probably describes most people in the entertainment industry, it is may be explaining the the person closest to you. ... Read more

A series of essays by distinguished psychologists and psychiatrists in this field is as good a way as any to introduce Autism and Aspergers syndrome to the enquiring reader.
4-0 out of 5 stars Valuable Reference Book
This is a reference book explaining just what the title says: Asperger's Syndrome, autism proper, and how the two are related. The book also offers a sample of various alternative medical theories and, in one chapter, details six case samples from real life.If you or someone you know hasAS, this is a good book to read.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good AD/HD Resource
When I was first diagnosed as ADHD (emphasis on the "H"), I craved knowledge on the subject.I turned to this book and learned so much. However, true to my inattentiveness, I haven't actually FINISHED reading the book! It's one of those things that comes with so much information I can only absorb it in small doses. So I read the chapters as they become meaningful for me in my journey of coping with ADD.Eventually I'll finish the book.Especially meaningful has been the section of "Women in the Workplace".
5-0 out of 5 stars Must Read
This book will be a validating reading experience for any woman who has AD/HD, not to mention those in her family who want to understand her better. The author breaks down the symptoms, perceptions and realities of AD/HD so that the reader can get a clearer picture of what AD/HD is for women and what can be done in order to improve their lives. There are many references included in the book so continued research and reading is made easy.Do not pass this book by - you'll miss out on some VERY important information that will change your life for the better.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic
The answer to so many of my questions. For me, as a woman that has just been diagnosed with ADD on my 52nd birthday, this book has been a life saver. A must read for all women who suspect they may have it, think someone they know might have it or has already been diagnosed with it. 5-0 out of 5 stars Very Practical and Supportive
This book was very helpful to me as an adult child of a borderline parent. It gave me validation, the secure sense that I was not going crazy through all this time of the tough experiences in this relationship with my mother.Reading the book was like I had told someone what I went through and they were talking to me about it.The exercises are very practical if you have the time to follow them. The only suggestion I would have for the authors would be a set of recommendations for how to connect with other family members who are not "target" of the BPD behavior.Another aspect that would be helpful is to how to help a sibling that is going through this challenge, overcome the difficulties a BPD parent can cause to them and how they see life.Despite these two things not being part of the book, it is still a great work, a quick read, and understanding of where the adult child of a borderline parent is coming from. Also helpful for spouses of the adult children, to better understand them.

5-0 out of 5 stars Help for Dealing with a Difficult Parent
Not sure what was wrong with my relationship with my mother, but suspecting BPD, I read this book in 2 days. It is the only book I've read that offers practical advice for dealing with difficult people, especially the overbearing, moody, and negative parent. This book was my saving grace and I have given it to friends who also have difficult family members. I can't say enough about the positive change this book has brought, helping me create boundaries and be able to communicate effectively and respectfully. It has also helped me, as a borderline mother myself, not make the same mistakes my mother did.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book is so healing!
I am a 39 year old woman who has been living with confusion about my childhood all of my life. This book is exactly what I've needed, I wish I read it 20 years ago.Reading the stories of other survivors has been so healing. My feelings are normal, as far as having grown up with a mother with BPD!I can't say enough about how much this book means to me!!! ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Pretty Good
This book was pretty helpful. It covered most topics that I was looking for.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very User Friendly
I like the variety of ways that the stories can be presented to the student. The stories may be cut into conceptual thoughts, or put into a three-ring binder, placing the pages in plastic sheets, just to name a couple. It leaves room also for filling in any missing pieces of the Social Story puzzle, dependending on the circumstance.

5-0 out of 5 stars Gives visual insight to struggles
This well illustrated book not only helps those with ASD, but also those of us who come in contact with them on a daily basis. As I read the stories and illustrations, it helped me to understand that even things which we may consider simple, can be a challenge to a person with ASD . Tasks such as chewing gum, sharing, knowing when to say "excuse me", chewing food properly, and so many more are illustrated in this book. Good job! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars You need not be Dummies to benefit from this book
Finally! A book that gives a clear overview of pretty much every aspect related to autism spectrum disorder: from "classic autism" to Asperger Syndrome and High Functioning Autism. It covers diagnosis, medical and biochemical interventions, sensory issues, learning environments, education, social skills and relationships from pre-school through adulthood. And much more! How can one book address so many topics on one book? Even I'm dumbfounded it can be done...and I guess that's the point. It's Autism for Dummies, which means it gives the briefest most concise explanation. It is written in a clear and understandable manner than ANYONE can simply pick it up, scan through it and get a good handle on what autism is. This is an excellent reference book that every school and parent should have in their library to quickly thumb through for a quick explanation. I, as a parent of three children with ASD, have purchased SEVEN copies (so far!); one for myself to use a continual quick reference book, and 6 others for the professionals who work with my kids.
5-0 out of 5 stars A very complete and helpful guide...
Over the past three years since we began to suspect my grandson was autistic, I have accumulated a large library on the subject. Many of the books covered or advocated specific types of treatment, or information on school special education, or finances and autism, or possible causes, or personal success stories or even stories of acceptance when success didn't happen. This book covers them all, and more, and does it well.I'm getting another copy for my son and daughter-in-law, although by now they are experts, not dummies.. This is a really EXCELLENT contribution to the available literature on this increasingly common developmental condition.Don't miss it! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The most amazing book I've ever read
This book touched me where no book has ever donw before... it changed my life and i think everyone should read it, because it applies to everyone with problems. What none of us realize is that borderline personality disorder is a much more common problem that any of us percieve it to be. Borderline Personality Disorder is just a name for a much deeper issue dealing with one's childhood that causes them to act the way they are. This is your neighbor that screams at her kids, this is your mailman who hates his job, this is you parents that you fail to understand, this is you and almost everyone around you. Everyone needs to read this book, once again, I'll repeat, it changed my life.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must read!
While reading this book, I realized that I had experienced so many of the same things the author experienced. After 8 years of therapy, I realized along with my diagnosis of PTSD, I also suffer from BPD."Get Me Out Of Here" helped me face some of my own issues and has helped me open up new dialogue with my therapist so that I can heal too.I encourage anyone who suffers from BPD to read this book.I am on the road to recovery and consider this book to be a turning point in my own recovery.Thank you, Rachel Reiland, for your honesty and willingness to share your experience.

5-0 out of 5 stars Essential reading for mental healthcare counselors
Okay, I did not know what to expect when purchasing this book, but I was intrigued by the synopsis. As a Board Certified Member in Expert Stress (BCETS)and a member of the American Academy of Experts in Traumatic Stress (AAETS) actively involved in treating veterans returning from Iraq and Afghanistan, I suggest this should be required reading for EVERYONE in and considering on entering into the mental healthcare profession. Rachel eloquently elaborates on, not only what it is like to live with BPD, but describes the epitome of professionalism in counseling -- transference, boundaries, self-disclosure, and counseling metodology. I wish that I had read this book early in my journey in counseling. It is directly applicable, not only to BPD, but as dissociative identity disorder (DID) and other DSM-IV-TR disorders resulting from trauma in which transference is an issue. A 5-star rating is an understatement. ... Read more

In reviewing this book I found it to be interesting and educational at the same time. It is not dry reading for a subject that could well be that. I will be able to use this book in my clinical practice when I graduate this summer.

Superb introduction to psychosocial rehabilitation.Introduces the experiece of mental illness from the client's perspecitive, covers symptoms and etiology of severe and persistent mental illness as well as treatment strategies. The book is simply written using case illustrations.I have used it for new staff at our community mental health clinic for the past 2 years. The book was popular - so popular that it disappeared and I am replacing it with several copies, one for each team. 4-0 out of 5 stars Very helpful
Ignore the fussy Library Journal review up there and get this book if you have any suspicion that you were raised by a narcissist. I'm just starting the process of coming to terms with my childhood and this book has been a tremendous help. Dr. Golomb collects a diverse range of case studies, insightfully explains the psychological processes at work in each one, and then finally brings the lessons of all the cases together to offer practical advice on recovery. If you've been dogged by the cruelty and rejection of a narcissistic parent all your life, this book is a great way to begin the process of moving out from under that shadow.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book
This is a "GREAT BOOK" if your ready to learn how your life has been effected by your childhood.Very moving and can be pain full in some parts.A must read if your ready to understand the why and the what.

This book was great. It flowed well, with a lot of real life stories. The explanation and solutions were well tied into those stories.

5-0 out of 5 stars Nails it ...
God bless for Martha Stout for writing this amazing book.If you have ever encountered someone who defies explanation, who you just feel uncomfortable around, who you don't trust, you must read this book.Someone has finally revealed in a most readable manner true sociopathic behavior and how it can exist without being called to task for the horrendous damage it can do.I truly think this book should be on the bestseller list, just so it reaches more people. It gives a voice to everyone who has been affected by sociopathic behavior whether they have realized what it was or not.Thank you Martha Stout for writing this fascinating book.Your courage is deeply appreciated.

5-0 out of 5 stars A MUST read!!
You just never know who you are dealing with!I do believe that this book is imperative reading for any human-being who cares about their psychological health and the health of their friends and family.

3-0 out of 5 stars Read With Caution: Misrepresents Our Armed Forces
The Sociopath Next Door by Martha Stout (2005), in the main, is on the mark. It is clear, straightforward, and the examples are easy to follow. But, I take strong exception to the impression Dr. Stout leaves that the soldier in general and special operations professionals (snipers, undercover operatives, hand-to-hand specialists), in particular, are sociopaths. She says: "To some extent, we can think of sociopaths as being shaped and maintained by society because nations so often require cold-blooded killers, from anonymous foot soldiers. . . Sociopaths are fearless and superior warriors. . .(Stout 2005:139).

5-0 out of 5 stars Good for curing conservatives...
If you know someone who reads Ann Coulter or Neanderthals like that, get this book; you may be able to help them. If all else fails, you can at least hit them with the book.

5-0 out of 5 stars One Of The Best Books About Psychopathy
This is a classic. A must read. Although pricey, this book will be indispensable to both the student and student of life. I found it fascinating and very in-depth. I study psychopathy, so this book came in very handy when completing a website, along with Meloy's other work, "Violent Attachments."

5-0 out of 5 stars Not quite the Psychopathy Bible...but almost
J. Reid Meloy's book provides a fascinating insight into the mind of the psychopath and is perhaps one of the most comprehension books on psychopathy since Hervey Cleckley's masterpiece, "The Mask of Sanity".This book is divided into four sections that discuss originsand previous theories, the psychopath's experience of emotion, theimportance of aggression in the psychopathic mind, and treatment plans forpsychopathy. While the first two sections on previous theories andpsychopathic emotion are difficult to read because of the technicalvocabulary terms, they still provide key information concerning thecreation and signiture traits of a psychopathic individual. The readingbecomes easier once Meloy starts to discuss certain case studies and thetreatments he has used and studyied. The increased readibility does notmean that this book loses value for a clinician. On the contrary, Ibelieve that this is a book that all individuals who are interested inunderstanding and identifying the psychopath, clinicians and lay personsalike, should read.Meloy's book is mainly from a forensic perspective andtherefore almost all of his case studies involve criminal psychopaths.Oneimportant distinction not made clear in this book is that not allpsychopaths are criminals. However, this distinction is not severelydetrimental to the quality of the book, and it is still an excellent andvery comprehensive source on this disturbing, yet interesting mentaldisorder. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars OCD
This was a very informative and helpful book for both therapists and those seeking self-help.

5-0 out of 5 stars Supportive and realistic
This book is exactly what it says - a complete guide. Very informative, practical help is given, with a strong element of understanding supportiveness at the same time. You can take this book, design a program for recovery, and implement it. Or, if you just want to understand more about the world of an OCD sufferer, you will find plenty of information here. I especially liked the sections covering realistic expectations in recovery, acceptances the sufferer needs to make in living with the disorder, and how to maintain a recovery over the long term. A lifeline to those suffering from OCD or their families, this book is hopeful and realistic at the same time.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Outstanding Contribution
Obsessive compulsive and related disorders are difficult but not impossible to treat. In this comprehensive and highly readable book, Dr. Penzel covers all of the most important aspects of these conditions. As a nationally recognized expert, the author uses his vast knowledge and experience to assist sufferers, relatives, and clinicians as they confront these challeging problems. I highly recommend this book for the knowledge that it imparts as well as for the author's optimism and compassion, which are evident throughout the book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Really Love This Book!!
Don't let the size fool you.If you have been diagnosed with DID, then this little book of 109 pages is what you need.It doesn't go into the hows and whys of DID, the DID Source Book is great for that. What "Got Parts?" gives you is a day to day manual for getting through life with DID.I carry it in my backpack where ever I go. There are times that DID just gets me down, so I pick up the book, thumb easily to the section I want, take a minute to read about what I need to do, then I remember and do it.Another great thing about this book is that it is written by someone who has DID, who lives and fights in the trenches of DID.This brings authenticity to the book.It also has an index and is easy to locate the subject you are looking for. The writing style of the author is very easy going and she doesn't ever break into stories of her past. There is a page, however in the very back entitled, "About the Author" who remains unidentified.Even then she never talks about the details of her abuse. It's just plain good advice from someone who knows.I have several DID books, but this one is my favorite when I just need to get through the day. When I have moments of feeling crazy, I open the book. When I feel overwhelmed with emotion, I open this book.It helps me to clear my thinking and gives me immediate direction. In short, I really love this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Must Have for sufferers of DID
Excellent information, step by step excersises, easy to read, non complex book. Must read for all patients and mental health providers of DID!

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing!
When I first got this book, I was a bit ticked that I paid thirteen dollars for a book that was only around a hundred pages. But once I read it, I knew it was well worth the money. Every sentance is informative. It confronts many daily aspects of life that are affected when one has DID and how to overcome that. Its not full of psycho-mumbo-jumbo but how to handle everyday thigns like taking medicine, raising the kids, sexual activity, work, and respect among the alters. It is truly an owners manual for those with DID. ... Read more
