5-0 out of 5 stars VERY Technical, but extremely interesting!
Although it is obvious that this book was written more for other physicians and workers in the mental health profession (the vocabulary is quite advanced to say the least), I found each new chapter held something in it to help me learn more about the effects of trauma and the different outcomes of a traumatic childhood. I, having Dissociative Identity Disorder (formerly known as Multiple Personality Disorder) was relieved to read that I was not different in the fact that I had been diagnosed with almost everything and have been in and out of hospitals. I've also worked with the author's staff as well as his assistant and, although I'm not quite sure of my thoughts on his view of memories, I totally agree that memories are not the point. The point is that we wouldn't have problems if life had been bliss. I highly recommend this THICK book to anyone who, if they don't have a complex vocabulary, is willing to look up words as they go. 5-0 out of 5 stars The significance of trauma
In this landmark work, Dr. Ross challenges the field of psychiatry to make a giant leap forward in the treatment of mental illness. After 21 years of carefully listening to patients and weighing scientific evidence, he has hit on what should now be obvious: trauma causes and/or contributes to most psychiatric disorders. This is especially true for comorbid (many diagnosies) patients.Just as a single disease can produce multiple physical symptoms, unresolved trauma can generate multiple diagnosies. He describes why the single gene-single disease and biomedical reductionist models don't work for psychiatry. He also points out many flaws in logic in the DSM IV diagnosies, making specific revision suggestions. His hypothesies will pique the curiosity of many reseachers and lead to many dissertations. He concludes if trauma therapy is added to medication for many patients, outcomes will be much improved. This is a must read for the serious mental health professional. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Enlightening, practical, motivating
This book was enlightening to read as it greatly extended my own thinking about the many ways that I can positively impact my clients' and students' lives. The many practical examples included in each chapter motivated me to try many of the interventions described in the book in my professional practices.and guess what... they really do work...
5-0 out of 5 stars Pace setting and exciting
This is a must read for students in counseling, social work, and psychology. The authors do an excellent job of clearly describing the paradigm shift that is occurring in the mental health professions... I use this textbook with my studnets and they rave about it...This is a must read book!!!!!It will truly prepare your students for the challenges they face in the future.
1-0 out of 5 stars Please don't make your students buy this.
This is the *worst* textbook I think I've ever read.I actually get angry just reading it.The message about the need for community counseling is fine, however, when that exact same message is repeated over and over and over in just slightly different ways, paragraph after paragraph for over 300 pages, without any really communication of theory or practice - well, it just makes you want to throw the book across the room.

Book was in excellent condition, inexpensive, and came in a resonable amount of time.

2-0 out of 5 stars Think of how many prostitutes you could afford with $106!
This book has made me wonder just what the hell psychologists have been doing for the last 100 years.Used in a large number of college classrooms around the nation, and along with the hefty $100+ price tag, I was rather expectant as I began reading this colorful text that was to offer an introduction to abnormal psychology. And if I might be blunt, after finished the whole text, I'm left with the conclusion that either psychology is one of the emptiest modern "sciences" practiced today, or this book fails to achieve its introductory purpose.Due to further research and careful observation of my professor, I surmise the case is more of the former.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding!
The book is great, and a "must have" for those who seek a better understanding of personality and its disorders. 5-0 out of 5 stars One man's personality disorder . . .
. . . is another man's path to riches, professional prestige, and social control.5-0 out of 5 stars The best book on personality disorders on the market !!!
There are few books in psychology that are as comprehensive in scope and detail as Dr. Millon's book. The book provides a solid, integrative theory of personality and personality disorders that can be used not only in research, but also clinical practice by psychologists from any theoretical orientation. Because it is so comprehensive, the book is especially useful for students. The first section of the book (approximately 200 pgs.) is dedicated to laying down a foundation for the study of personality disorders -- the issues that it entails and a concise (yet, detailed) review of various personality theories.Dr. Millon then presents a rational, integrated theory of personality that is the foundation of his integrated biopsychosocial approach to personality. The rest of the book is dedicated to a detailed examination of the DSM-IV personality disorders. This single book can serve as a primary text for any advanced course in personality. Whether one aggrees with Dr. Millon's theory (and few can disagree with it completely once they understand it's comprehensive and integrated nature), this book is one that anybody who deals with the personality disorders MUST have on their bookshelf. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Read for All Behavior Analysts
Controversial Therapies exposes the ugly, inconvenient truth about sensory integration, auditory integration training, facilitated communication, positive behavior support, and a host of other fads and bogus treatments. Jacobson, Foxx, and Mulick have complied a set of chapters, and written many themselves, that provides all the ammunition that anyone needs to shoot down these wasteful and chronic malignancies that pervade the field of developmental disabilities and especially autism.
5-0 out of 5 stars Editor's remarks
Some notes about the book:
5-0 out of 5 stars Essential Reading
Autism and other disorders on the Autistic Spectrum are among the most serious of behavioral diagnoses. As such, the ASD's should be the focus of our most intensive, science-based efforts to find ways to address the difficulties we associate with the diagnoses (see www.asatonline.org).Instead, treatment has been a history of fad, with charlatans or the uninformed pushing useless and potentially dangerous "treatments."This book will inform you of the history, as well as current trends. Most importantly, it will show you how to avoid the common non-science based traps. The field's friend, Dr. John Jacobson, recently died. This book is a fitting final contribution. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Very Educational
This was one book I did not hesitate to buy as I know so many people with the mental illnesses.
5-0 out of 5 stars A caring and compassionate work
The former First Lady's book is a very compassionate effort which can help a person who has to deal with mental illness for the first time no matter what the setting.Mrs. Carter gives a good over-view of the "wholepicture" concerning all mental illness with enough detail to give thereader a good foundation in the subject.I think the really profound thingthat I read in every line of the book was the real sincerity that Mrs.Carter has for her work. She really is serious about changing the way somein society look at individuals with mental illesses.I applaud her for herwork and her book.

An excellent resource for family members and friends who wish to help a person with mental illness. I especially appreciated the book's emphasis on biological *and* social risk factors for various forms of mental illness.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An important book to read for anyone interested in ECT
Max Fink's book discusses ECT in detail, but also in terms that the majority of patients can understand. It is clearly written, without hype, and describes ECT from the perspective of an experienced and caring clinician.I frequently recommend it for patients who are considering ECT.
4-0 out of 5 stars FDAapproved vagus nerve stimulation-a much better therapy
In February of 2005, the FDA approved vagus nerve stimulation as a treatment for chronic depression. With this approval, for many patients electro-convulsive therapy will no longer be the most aggressive way to treat their chronic disease. Max Fink's book is very helpful in explaining and comforting a patient that is fearful of ECT. There is a terrible stigma associated with shock therapy. If it works, the relapse rate is high. For my money, I think I will go with vagus nerve stimulation and itsbenefits which are apparently sustained over a long time.

2-0 out of 5 stars Cautious, Not Unconvinced
I have some hesitation recommending a book on Electro-shock which is so clearly pro-ECT and does not review this very controversial subject with an objective eye, however, having said that, I believe it is a worthwhile book as long as it is read in conjunction with a book that seriously questions the value of ECT and studies the mechanism by which it is assumed to work.Dr. Fink gives some very clear and logical sounding reasons for choosing ECT, but he does not counterbalance theseRead more

5-0 out of 5 stars Strange And Dangerous Dreams: The Fine Line Between Adventure And Madness
Being an avid reader of mountaineering literature, both historic and contemporary, I was already familiar with the accomplishments (or lack thereof) of the climbers in this book. However, seen from writer Geoff Powter's perspective, who is both a practicing psychologist and a veteran of many important ascents in North America and the Himalaya, his arguments for inspired madness have breathed new life into what had once seemed all too familiar territory.
5-0 out of 5 stars Those Whom the Gods Grant Vision, Then Make Them Crazy . . . .
A "human desire for heroes of virgin promise" is the foundation that winds through three areas, 1) the burdened (Lewis, Scott, Andree and Crowhurst), 2) the bent (Franklin, Batten and Crowley) and 3) the lost (Corti, Wilson, Denman and three Watermans). This is a frightening and compulsive read that visits your thoughts for a long time.
4-0 out of 5 stars Strange and Dangerous Dreams
Climber and psychiatrist Geoff Powter tells the stories of explorers and climbers, from Meriwether Lewis to Aleister Crowley, who may have suffered from psychological ailments. In many of the cases, the individuals may have been driven to their desperate adventures by their mental and emotional suffering. Powter gives engaging sketches of their lives and addresses the difference between them and the risk-taking mountaineers and explorers who may be labeled 'crazy' by the public, but in fact are entirely sane. He has a relatively good sense of historical mentalities and the contexts in which his subjects lived. In the cases where he suggests clinical diagnoses, they seem sensible (he doesn't accuse anyone of having a random 'death wish') and based on evidence.

5-0 out of 5 stars Humanistic - Existential Psychotherapy
A Excellent synthesis of Yalom's former publications. Yalom is very easy to read, yet informative. He does not write in the troublesome professional jargon of other psychiatrists. Anyone going into the field of psychotherapy, counseling, social work, etc. should read this book. A great book is one that is informative yet enjoyable at the same time. This work leaves a desire to read all of Yalom's books.I just purchased Existential Psychotherapy and I have already read When Nietzsche Wept and Love's Executioner. From a student in Philosophy looking to go into clinical psychology.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent overview of Yalom's prior work
As a psychologist working in a college counseling center, I found this book to be a useful review of Yalom's prior publications. The first part of the book draws from Yalom's definitive text on group therapy, THE THEORY AND PRACTICE OF GROUP PSYCHOTHERAPY.In this section, he addresses some of the most salient therapeutic factors to group treatment as well provides vital guidelines for therapists serving as group facilitators. He also describes group therapy with several different types of specialized groups:hospitalized patients, patients addicted to alcohol, the terminally ill, and the bereaved (although this last group was aimed at widows/widowers, I have been able to adapt some of the concepts to my work wtih college students).Part two centers on existential therapy, as Yalom provides excerpts from his previous text by that same name.He spends time examining each of the four ultimate concerns--death, freedom, isolation, and meaninglessness--and he focuses particularly on death and anxiety in psychotherapy. In the final section of the book, Yalom espouses on psychology and writing, and he reviews his journey from therapist to fiction writer.Yalom is a thoughtful and engaging writer who provides intelligent insights into some of the most critical areas of psychotherapy in this enjoyable and important book. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars if you are not professional, better take other book
Actually of the book I read the last part that is helpful. The first part is full of statistical details. Maybe it is important for professionals (and it really is a book for professionals) but for me not. I read the book as a partner of survivor and the last part really explained a lot to me.

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome, but Caution
I am a physican and mentalhealth professional, and I was found the book to be one of the better books on the subject because, for the first time, brought you into the mind set of the perpetrators AND the victims.
4-0 out of 5 stars Understand the effects of sadistic and non-sadistic abuse
I read the chapter about the after effects of sadistic sexual abuse and non-sadistic sexual abuse (after searching all over for a book that addresses this aspect of child abuse). The examples were horrifying, so I do not recommend this book to everyone. This is one of the few books on sexual abuse that talks about sadistic abuse, and as a survivor I know how important it is to understand the unique effects of this kind of sexual abuse. Reading this chapter helped me to understand the motivations behind the cruel acts that were committed against me, and the after effects that I experience.I could see myself in both the survivors of sadistic abuse and non-sadistic abuse because I was abused in both ways at different times during my life. This book offers important insight into a painful topic. 5-0 out of 5 stars The reality of Echo and Narcissus today
The most surprising fact about the myth of Narcissus as the Greeks told it is that it is not about a mythical man who could not recognize his own reflection. It is about a severe psychological blindness that accounts for many problems that prevent communication between individuals. The Narcissus relates to a 'reflection', his own reflection and by this I mean his inner perception which seems to be an other, not his own reflection. Thought is a reflection. The Roman version added a lonely female counterpart who mourned the loss of male companionship as she repeated the last words of what she heard Narcissus say. Modern individuals may not recognize the 'resonation' within that causes him or her to respond: "Tell me about it!" when their inner 'reflection' is discerned. This is a dreadful condition, and its one that causes many, many relationships to crumble. When Mr. Schwartz writes that the narcissist has a poor sense of history, it would be more meaningful to realize that the narcissist seems to forget very many details of every day life. It can cause immense confusion if one speaks about something that was said or done that the narcissist doesn't remember, because (s)he is almost certain to say something like "you are imagining things, I wouldn't do that. I'm not that sort of person." The book is very readable and thought provoking. Anyone can learn something about how 'projecting' one's 'reflection' or one's 'shadow' without recognizing it occurs. I'm not sure the word 'shadow' is what is rejected, this is a factor of inner perception, a mechanism of 'insight' that is quite difficult to identify. Goethe mentioned that he saw 'not with the eyes of the body, but the eye of the soul'. The fact that what is 'inside' one's own head can seem to be 'out there', outside of one's body is a strange fact to have to deal with, but this book can provide information that is useful. I have worn out my first copy.

3-0 out of 5 stars The Obfuscating Myth
Schwartz-Salant is one of the most thought-provoking Jungians around. He continues and extends Jung's archetypal narratives by exploring deeper links with alchemy, mythology, and other psychodynamics and object relations schools of psychology. In this book, he uses Greek mythology as an exegetic (interpretative) framework to gain clinical insights. This is not such a good idea and resorting to Kohut's work does not counter-balance this deficiency. Greek mythology is limited both by its set of characters and their interactions and by its cultural context. That it is a finished work - cast in the stone of history - makes it static and unable to cope with the dynamics of the hydra of pathological narcissism. A colourful intellectual exercise - but of very litlle clinical use, I am afraid. Sam Vaknin, author of "Malignant Self Love - Narcissism Revisited".

Editorial Review

The odds are high that someone close to you has been told he or she has a "chemical imbalance" in the brain, but the odds are slim that the doctor who said it could point to any convincing evidence that it was true. The increasing awareness that most biological theories underlying diagnoses of depression, schizophrenia, and other mental problems are based very loosely on accidental drug discoveries and promoted heavily by pharmaceutical companies is the basis for neuroscientist Elliot S. Valenstein's book Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars And who would want to read about the worst kind of sin?
I've always been fascinated with the intricacies of the human mind. After completing a book about a patient with schizophrenia, I picked up for a change this book about Disassociative Identity Disorder. I've to tell you, in sharp contrast to the effort it took me to comprehension the symptoms of schizophrenia, DID required challenging- no, scratch that- almost mind-bending attempt on my behalf to comprehend how the brain could invent such a mechanism to cope with abuse.
5-0 out of 5 stars Non Co-Conscious View
I have heard many people bash this book, but as a multiple who is NOT co-conscious with many of her alters...I found it extremely helpful in establishing contact with them. Yes, it reads like a novel. He wasn't attemping to be a doctor and write it as a "how to" guide. It lets you into the feelings and the uncertainly. There is much speculation and doubt within the pages. I know how that feels.
1-0 out of 5 stars Worst book ever read on Multiple Personality disorder
I'm not going to waste much time on this book review except to say that of all the books I've read on this disorder this one is the worst.

4-0 out of 5 stars Move trauma out of your nervous system.
EMDR helps you to integrate the two halves of your brain and to heal from trauma that is trapped in your nervous system.EMDR is a very effective treatment for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). It isn't quite as spectacular as the books make it seem, but it really can work.EMDR helps you to recognize that the abuse happened in the past, and is not happening in the present. Therefore it is easier for you to process your traumatic experiences because you don't have to live as if the abuse is still happening. This book has a more realistic view on EMDR in the treatment of adults abused as children. Some books claim that healing occurs in only a few sessions. That may be the case for a person with a single trauma, or a trauma in adulthood, but there is no real quick fix for the person abused extensively and long term during childhood (especially if abused by a parent figure). However, EMDR can speed up the process.5-0 out of 5 stars If you think it's hocus pocus, you don't understand it
I've used EMDR to treat many sexually abused patients. It is an extremely powerful tool that doesn't rely on only eye movements but rather on the physiology of the brain addressed by stimulating it, the brain, in a symmetrical and bilateral means. It is the only tool I've found that can allow the healing of a single traumatic memory (such as a rape) in a way that does not re-traumatize the patient.Recommded highly.

5-0 out of 5 stars EMDRite FINALLY FINDS BOOK THAT TELLS IT LIKE IT IS
As an experienced EMDR client, neuropsych. researcher, Early Childhood Educator and childhood abuse survivor I finally found a book that tells it like it REALLY IS.Laura Parnell has the awesome capacity to translate what my brain was activating, my mind thinking and my emotions feeling in a direct and insightful manner. This is MUST READING for anyone working with children as well as those of us still learning how to use our weakest link as our strongest link. After reading this book I was able to go on vacation for the first time in my life truly at peace with the present. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars 1 of the BEST books on Manic Depression
By far, this is one of the best books I've read on manic depression. I should know -I'm a PhD-MD cannidate at the university that is the brother school to the college (sister school) I attended- (Ivy L, 7 Sisters, CT, MA -figure it out...;)- in psychiatric medicine, focusing on mood disorders and substance abuse. I'm also a person living with Bipolar I and who is sick and tired of everyone yapping about Bipolar Illness and not doing much research on it (which is pointed out at the very end of the book.) However, this book is a refreshing surprise in a sea of far too many "I have BP disorder, read MY book b/c I'll tell YOU how to survive!!!" narratives.
2-0 out of 5 stars Disappointed
As a person with manic depression, I found this book lacking tact. Why refer to the person in question as a "maniac"? Why always refer to the person in question as "he" -- except for the one time the authors pointed out that female "maniacs" often erroneously believe that men are in love with them. (Well! I never! I'll have you know that men ARE in love with me.) It was as if the authors assumed that no person with the illness would actually pick up the book and read it. I felt the whole time as if I were eavesdropping on a conversation about people like me but from which people like me were excluded. (I also found it striking that although the authors chose 4 great men to write about, the cover of the book has on it a sad and scary-looking crazy woman.)
5-0 out of 5 stars Much needed
While we have some great examples of depression and its link to creativity (think Conroy's "Prince of Tides" or "The Bark of the Dogwood"), there hasn't been enough written about this subject from the perspective that Hershman and Lieb give us.Thisbook is an overview of four talented and well-know men--Newton, Beethoven, Dickens, and Van Gogh.I'm sure the list of manic depressive creative persons is miles longer, but the book focuses on these four. This is an extremely valuable book for anyone attempting to understand the creative mind and how it works (or doesn't).Highly recommended along with "Touched with Fire." ...
