5-0 out of 5 stars New Age Hypnosis
Most hypnosis books don't focus on "New Age" concepts.Bruce5-0 out of 5 stars I don't understand the bad reviews...
Maybe this exercise book doesn't compare to his other books (which I haven't read), but it contains so much simple and valuable information.3-0 out of 5 stars Read the title
Well, I thought the script was repeated WAY too many times. The rest of the book, however, was not that bad. I think maybe people should notice the "NEW AGE" in the title before they buy it and assume that it's a mainstream self-hypnosis book.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Most intriguing and highly recommended!
This magnificent book takes you on a journey through "crop circle world", a complete and unique world of its own. It has been excitingly and passionately written. It holds your attention, even if you are not into geometry! The best thing about it is the author's conclusions, that he dares to draw through his decade of work on these miraculous designs. His conclusions change your view on this world, on reality itself. No other author has ever discovered what Bert Janssen discovered, and no one has ever had the guts to write it all down and share it with the world! Absolutely highly recommended!!! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent hypnotherapy text!
This book has to be approached, that is, read, from the standpoint of a hypnotherapist learning to improve his skill set.It is, in a way, a difficult book to read because reading scripts tends to put you into trance. You must consistently read it with an eye toward picking out the phrasing used and the intent of the wording in the scripts. If this is done, the text is quite instructive and complete. The casual reader
5-0 out of 5 stars Great for intermediates
I am relatively new to hypnosis.I have read a few books and have managed to advance my understanding of the practice with each.In my opinion, this book took me from beginner to intermediate. Some of the claims seem outrageous, but, I think that is part of his point anyway.I feel like I have taken a giant step forward after reading this one.

3-0 out of 5 stars Informative!
As a hypnotherapist, it was nice to read more of the medical approch to hypnosis.Lots of information about why and how we get sick.It made me feel a little more knowlegable so that not only can I help, but I could also explain why and how we get sick in laymans terms, very advantagious in the pretalk. In reading the book, some outdated technics were used,(probably filler for the book). I'm not saying that they don't work, but these techniecs are no longer used.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A classic by a mainstream author
Now don't go comparing this book to others for the number of stars. As this book is five star on its own. Leslie M. Lecron is well known as a mainstream specialist in the technique and understanding of the hypnosis process. What you are looking at is a classic. He may be a little Freud happy; however so was every one else in his environment. Say what you will the concept of triggering events is still with us. There is only one diagram of a Cheurel Pendulum "Magic Eye" and no photographs. Instead of me trying to interpret the good, bad and ugly of this book I will write the chapter titles so you can decide if this is what you are looking for.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars contains deep secrets
Dr. Barnett's book is fairly short and easy to read. It contains an excellent explanation of the root causes of emotional (and many physical) problems, using a Transactional Analysis model. By using hypnosis to get at these root causes, he has been able to free many patients from depression, addictions, obesity, and psychosomatic medical disorders. It was particularly useful for me that he has the credentials of having been a family practitioner for many years prior to entering the full time practice of hypnosis. Many books on hypnosis aim to clear up emotional disturbances by using more superficial means, such as direct suggestion. Barnett does regression therapy to truly get at the root cause of the problem, and cure it. He makes an excellent point that it is not our negative emotions which cause us problems, but our resistance to feeling the truth of our emotions that is the REAL cause of stress and unhappiness. A must read for all serious hypnosis practitioners. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Mesmerization of Victorian Britain
Alison Winter has written a thorough , well-researched look at mesmerismin Victorian Britain that is actually a thorough look at Victorian Britainthrough the concept of mesmerism. It was amazing to see how mesmerismtouched on such Victorian concepts as gender relations, the emergence ofscience and medicine as a profession, and class relations. The chapters onmesmerism and colonial India, and the effect of the idea on mesmerism inchanging the image of the homebound invalid were the most fascinating. Allthe famous characters from this period appear somewhere in this vast study. The metaphor seemed to stretch a little thin when reading and politicswere added to the mesmerisic mix near the end of the book, although thiswas nevertheless very interesting.A good book that makes me interested toread more about this time period in Britain.

4-0 out of 5 stars Medical hypnosis
This excellent book contains many fascinating threads, interwoven skillfully to produce a most satisfying reading experience. It is certainly a good history of altered states of consciousness obtained by interpersonal communication. The Austrian physician Franz Anton Mesmer borrowed the notion of "animal magnetism" (science was infatuated with magnets in those days) and went about effecting cures by touching patients with a glass wand in an abracadabra setting. The phenomenon took his name ("mesmerism") until the Scott James Braid started calling it "hypnotism" based on the Greek name for sleep. As should be expected, Victorian mesmerism/hypnotism bares little resemblance to modern medical hypnosis.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
A review as appeared in the International Journal of Clinical and Experimental Hypnosis,July 1997,Volume XLV, Number 3.The Handbook of Hypnotic Phenomena in Psychotherapy presents a discussion and anexploration of the use of the hypnotic phenomena that are the naturaloutgrowth of trance. The authors describe in detail the different hypnoticphenomena and how they can be used therapeutically for clinicalinterventions. The hypnotic phenomena discussed in this book includeamnesia, hypermnesia, posthypnotic suggestion, time distortion, ageregression, future progression, dissociation, hypnotic dreaming, catalepsy, arm levitation and ideomotor signaling, automatic writing, anesthesia andanalgesia, hyperesthesia, and positive and negative hallucinations. The Edgettes present their material from a theoretical orientation that islargely based on an Ericksonian approach.Nevertheless, their presentationof the potential clinical applicaitons of the various hypnotic phenomena,as demonstrated by a number of clinical case examples, would be of generalrelevance to clinicians from a wide range of theoretical orientations. The authors' stated goal in this book is to take the practitioner ofhypnosis beyond the use of hypnotic phenomena as an indicator of successfulclinical induction or as a measurement of hypnotic induction and depth inlaboratory experiments.Instead, they explore and explain how thesehypnotic phenomena can be used as a vehicle for clinical intervention. In my opiniion, the Edgettes have been highly successful in achievingtheir goal. They have written an extremely clear and readable explanationof the potential for using hypnotic phenomena in clinical interventions. There is a chapter devoted to each of the hypnotic phenomena. Each chapteris then organized into clear and consistent subdivisions covering suchtopics as experimental studies, indications for use, contradications, techniques of eliciting the phenomenon, and selected case examples andtranscript material. As a clinician working in the field ofpsychotherapy and using hypnosis in my practice, I found the chaptersdiscussing the specific phenomena and their clinical applications to be ofmost interest. In contrast, I found the introductory chapters to be lessinteresting and useful. However, a research-oriented reader or clinicianwith a different backgraound might well feel differently. In regard tothe chapters dealing with the different hypnotic phenomena, some wonderfulexcerpts are provided of verbalizations that could be used in specificclinical situations. An example of such excerpts is the authors'description of the use of the hypnotic phenomenon of amnesia to help aclient "forget to remember about that old habit" of smoking(p.51).The chapter on the phenomenon of age regression was of specialinterest to me as a clinician because of my own work in this field: particularly in the use of age regression with "creativeself-mothering" and the creation of "healing scripts" forclients with severely abusive or deprived backgrounds. In discussing theirwork in this area, the authors appropriately note that clients working withthese issues may require special care and expertise on the part of thetherapist due to the clients' impairment and vulnerability. However, theauthors also support the use of age regression as a tool for creatingpositive images and feelings in such severely deprived clients.Theysuggest that hypnosis can purposefully and therapeutically augment theclient's personal history. In summary, I feel that The Handbook ofHypnotic Phenomena in Psychotherapy is an excellent book.It provides anew perspective on the importance of hypnotic phenomena, and it also opensthe way for potentially new and expanding uses of these phenomena in theclinical setting as vehicles of therapeutic intervention. 5-0 out of 5 stars Learn to hypnotize yourself with the help of a friend
Freda Morris writes a book to demystify hypnosis and make it available to everyone. She has many years of experience as an educator in the field of hypnosis and knows how to make is simple and easy to follow. She is down-to-earth, unpretentious and fun.She is teaching what she calls assisted self-hypnosis. By working with a friend, she guides the reader through a process to allow them to hypnotize each other with the goal of becoming skilled in self-hypnosis. The hypnotee is ultimately in charge of each session. She applies hypnosis to subjects that include improving learning skills, better interpersonal relationships, enhancement of lovemaking, goal setting, past life regression, accessing spiritual guidance and more. I highly reccomend this book to anyone who wants to learn hypnosis. However, the program that is outlined involves a committment in time and regular practice. The results will be there if the suggestions are followed as directed.(I have only read this book so far, but not done the program. I did read her other book called Self-Hypnosis in 48 Hours. I was successful in hypnotizing myself, so I have faith in her methods. That was also a fun book as well) ... Read more

A good book to inform the complete novice but lacks real techniques anddepth.A bit of a springboard for Mr McKennas company and his manyhypnotic products. As a much better choice I can recommend"Professional Stage Hypnosis" by Ormond McGill. This covers arange of techniques and is much more technical in nature, it actuallyteaches you how to hypnotise and lists stage routines. ...
