5-0 out of 5 stars Best Textbook on Child Hypnosis and Hypnotherapy
This book's first edition was published in 1981, describing itself as a "comprehensive text...[providing] an up-to-date survey of the available information on child hypnotherapy...a detailed, thorough, andstimulating source of ideas and creative approaches to understandingchidlren and helping them develop their potential to the fullest." Therevised and expanded third edition includes new material, but hasn'tchanged substantially from the first edition - it is hard to improve onperfection. In its latest incarnation, this third edition remains the"gold standard in the field." This is a professional (but easily readable) monography. It is very comprehensive and can be used as both a textbook and a handbook. I received this book as a gift. I don't own a horse, never have, so I was puzzled by the gift.Ms. King's book was an informative, yet easily understandable read.I gained insights into what holds us back from winning and the importance letting go of unwanted "noise."I would recommend this book to ANY ATHLETE or ANY person wanting to acheive their best, not just those in the equestrian world. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Erotic Hypnosis is pure euphoric ecstasy!
As a certified hypnotist, I know that Peter Masters' guide to unleashing the euphoric power of HypnoSex (or Erotic Hypnosis) is a gift to the sexually adventurous! By tapping into the power of one's own erotic mind (where ALL our pleasure already originates), most anyone can experience explosive orgasms which can be even more intense than wildest fantasies!
5-0 out of 5 stars A new "toy" for the bedroom
I was curious to read Master's book because I have been hypnotized several times myself - though in a therapeutic setting, not a sexual setting. I haven't yet tried the techniques outlined in Master's book (though I've passed my copy off to my partner and am curious to see where things go) but I can say, speaking from my own experience of being hypnotized many times, that Masters has written an excellent guide to hypnosis for the lay person. His instructions are clear and very detailed and he often explains the reasoning behind his instructions as well so that the reader will be able to confidently adapt the techniques for individual situations. Masters even covers many of the "glitches" I personally experienced as a hypnosis subject and explains ways to avoid or minimize those situations.5-0 out of 5 stars The eyes have it
Ever since reading the once infamous novel Trilby, in which the evil Dr. Svengali hypnotizes the innocent but untalented Trilby into becoming a brilliant pianist, I've been fascinated by hypnotism. Also, my partner says I make love as if I'm in a hypnotic trance anyway, so I thought I'd see if this book could help. Having been trained in hypnosis at the famous Svengali and Trilby Institute myself, I can only say that this book is a fine contribution to the field, especially for those guys (like me) whose modus amore, as it were, is indistinguishable from a zombi-like stupor. Highly recommended. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A useful resource of hypnotic inductions
This book is a well-done compilation of induction techniques that can serve as models for practicing hypnotherapists. It is thoughtfully organized and a useful reference and learning tool.I was surprised by the review by "David Burns, Ph.D." who feels that hypnosis is unethical in psychotherapy.I put the name in quotes because I'm not sure whether that is his or her real name.Anyone with a Ph.D. in psychology would know that hypnosis is a well-validated and widely accepted medical technique. One would have to wonder where "David Burns" got his Ph.D. to be so unaware of the research evidence on hypnosis.Hartland's textbook Medical and Dental Hypnosis is well documented and gives references to countless studies showing its effectiveness in medical practice. As a psychiatrist who has used hypnosis as a tool in my practice for 30 years, I have found it to be an invaluable adjunct to both cognitive behavioral and psychodynamic approaches. If anything is unethical, it is depriving patients of a valuable tool because the therapist has a personal bias, ungrounded in scientific evidence, against hypnosis.

4-0 out of 5 stars An excellent manual ... if you know what you're reading.
When we take into consideration what this book is supposed to be, that is, a guide to deeper and more productive inductions, the Handbook fills this niche very well.4-0 out of 5 stars Handbook of Hypnotic Inductions
The encyclopedic nature of this text shows a careful and complete overview of the field in addition to the practical applications gleaned from years of actual use of these methods. This book a must-have for the practitioner looking to enhance their therapeutic techniques.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Cassette.... if only there were a CD version
I love this kit, and have used it from time to time. The author has a pleasant English accent, and if you've ever listened to any guided meditation before, you know that the voice can affect your ability to relax and follow instructions.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great book, even better audio tape
I, too, often fall asleep listening to the audio tape.I consider it a good thing since I normally have trouble falling asleep. If you do not want to fall asleep while listening to this tape, I reccommend sitting upright in a chair without a head rest; use the tape at a time when you are not tired.Besides helping me sleep better, both the book and the tape helped me handle my stress and self-esteem issues. The book is packed full of affirmation scripts for different ailments (including smoking cessation, skin problems, asthma, and confidence) that you can use to personalize your self-hypnosis routine.I found the one on weight control to be especially useful in helping me achieve my weight loss goals.Only one thing would make this product perfect:if the audio tape was a CD instead. When I fall asleep during the tape, the automatic stop button pops up and rudely rips me from my sleep.

3-0 out of 5 stars Fell asleep!
I think this is a nicely done kit on self-hypnosis, but--as with so many self-hypnosis tapes, I fell asleep while listening to it. I've made the attempt twice now and just can't seem to stay awake. I'm not blaming the kit, itself, but there's got to be a way to stay awake during self-hypnosis...and I can't be the only one who has encountered this problem. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Inspirational Read!
Innovative approach to therapy! Dr, Erikson was an expert on the nature of humans. He did not focus on the cause of a patient's problem but rather on how change in a person's behavior could provide the solution. It is inspirational in that the realization of effective therapy is that there is no one treatment, and approaches to treatment vary according to the therapist's interpretation. "Thinking outside the box", so to speak. The approaches Erikson implements are humorous and extremely effective! I could not put the book down!

3-0 out of 5 stars Good Book, but over Haley's head
As an admirer of Milton H Erickson's work and techniques, I wish I could give this book (which i happen to own) a better score. Contained within is alot of great and useful information, unfortuneatly the novice will learn very little from the book on how the therapy is performed. The persons familiar with Ericksons work will find it a good source for condensed case histories, and fresh ideas, even when Haley does not fully understand the nature of what he is writing about, he does a good job of keeping things flowing and drawing simple conclusions.5-0 out of 5 stars Classic Psychology

Editorial Review

Now that the popularity of alternative medicine has made justabout everyone aware of the health connection between mind and body, itseems like a fine time to bring back this book, originally written bythe late psychiatrist Caprio and newly revised by Caroline Miller, deanof academic studies at the American Institute of Hypnotherapy. To theauthors, self-hypnosis is an ideal way to reach a state of relaxationand concentration that will allow you to send healing messages to yourbody and really get it to listen. The easy-to-follow text includesseveral methods of hypnotic induction, and instructs readers on usingthe process to lose weight, sleep better, overcome depression, improvetheir sex lives, slow the aging process, and conquer other healthdifficulties that are now widely acknowledged to depend quite a bit onsubconscious mental states. The authors acknowledge that hypnosis isoften misunderstood, and they devote quite a bit of effort toovercoming misconceptions and getting readers to take it seriously as ahealing force. --Ben Kallen, Personal Growth editor ... 1-0 out of 5 stars much too wordy and patronizing
This book is mainly trying to convince the reader that hypnosis isn't bad for you. I happened to assume that already, that's why I bought the book.
4-0 out of 5 stars Very easy to read yet very effective
This book was an easier read than many hypnosis books on the market. There are also many relaxation scripts to help get beginners started.I have been exposed to many types of hypnosis practices and I must say that Ilike self-hypnosis the best, but I do feel that some exposure to aprofessional can be very beneficial.I have been using this book as an aidfor about 4 months and I must say the changes are indescribable. I havelost weight (a lot!), become more disciplined in my studies and have a morerewarding relationship with my boyfriend of 4 years. Also, since thesuggestions are my own that I am giving, then I am not as prone to acceptsuggestions from others and as result, I am more aware of negative energyamongst other people and don't take it on.This is a great book and inconjuction with other tools such as relaxation, some exposure to personaltherapy, it can/will have amazing effects and the that is the truth!

5-0 out of 5 stars Healing yourself with self-hypnosis
If you care about yourself and well being, this book is for you! The book is easy to read and enjoyable. You can apply self-hypnosis to almost anything in your daily life. There's no magic in hypnosis, it's all aboutthe positive attitude and response. The book in general has very good tipson how to relax and have a better way to live. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A definitive reference in the field of clinical hypnosis
Hartland's book on hypnosis is a staple in the field. It has gone through many editions, this being the most recent and up-to-date.The information is scholarly, well presented, and clinically very useful. The authors do seem to have an academic bent and a bit of an anti-American bias. They question the importance of Milton Erickson's work and poo poo the NLP literature, while at the same time borrowing many clinical techniques from Erickson and NLP without giving due credit. That minor objection aside, I found this book to be richly clinically relevant and I would recommend it to anyone who uses hypnosis in clincial practice. It is one of the "Bibles" in the hypnotherapeutic literature.

5-0 out of 5 stars Everything you want to know and more!
Very well written and easy to follow. Much more than I expected on topics that therapists encounter. Great book for those that are interested in hypnosis and want to learn how it is applied. Excellent for those that arealready practicing. Many scripts alone and how to use them make this bookwell worth the price. No steps left out. I have to keep this in the officeand often return to it for it's valuable information. For start to finishthis is worth it's weight for what you can learn and apply. This book is a really good starting point for a person looking to get involved with the field of clinical hypnosis as Hadley and Staudacher have clearly outlined the basic process. 3-0 out of 5 stars Useful, but read with caution
Overall there is some very useful information in here on the uses of hypnosis for pain control. It is written for clinicians, and so is free of some of the fluffier and more new age leanings of some other books on the subject. The potential buyer should be aware, however, that this is not a book with script ideas or lots of practical advice on how to phrase hypnotherapy sessions with pain patients.Rather, it provides an extensive overview of issues related to dealing with different kinds of pain patients and suggests how hypnosis is useful in these situations.5-0 out of 5 stars Beyond Pain
This book goes beyond simple suggestion for pain. It encompasses the psychology of pain, which includes somatic, neuropathic and procedural pain. This book is an absolute must for anyone interested in pain management.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent. The definitive text.
As a lay person, I found that this book is not only a tool for clinicians, but also provides a valuable explanation of hypnosis for anyone with an interest in psychology. In his introductory chapter, Joseph Barbersuccinctly defines hypnosis and explains the phenomenon clearly andaccurately. He makes the necessary distinctions to dispel myths abouthypnosis and separate the hypnotic state from mere suggestion.Barberdemonstrates a combination of sensitivity to human needs along withrigorous scientific grounding. It's fascinating reading, and one of thevery few books that a novice would need to understand the true nature ofhypnosis. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Lightweight?
Makes for a pleasant albeit bloated read. My impression is that most people would do well beginning with self-hypnosis and many would be fine sticking just to self-hypnosis.Temes' focus seems to be on wide coverage, i.e. showing all the things that hypnosis may help with.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book for the lay reader!
This book is superb for the average reader, because it tells so much about hypnosis. It does not seem to be intended to teach a lay person HOW to be a hypnotherapist, because for that one has to first be a qualified health professional, such as a psychologist or a physician. So, if one wants to learn a lot ABOUT hypnosis, read this book.

If you don't know much about hypnosis, The Complete Idiot's Guide to Hypnosis is a great introduction to self-hypnosis and choosing a hypnotist or hypnotherapist. The author dispels many common myths and provides a good historical overview. The portions of the book on self-hypnosis probably aren't comprehensive enough to allow for mastery, but they are certainly a good beginning. The strongest parts of the book deal with addressing common fears associated with being subjected to hypnosis.Like all Idiot's Guides, it is a pleasant and fast-moving book to read...quite enjoyable. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing
I bought this book after reading the rave reviews.Maybe I was expecting too much but I found the book overly academic, abstruse, rarefied, laden with jargon and poorly written. It begins with a review of some devleopmental psychology (Piaget, Gestalt theory, etc.).I had not read anything this dry and boring since my college intro psych course. The authors present a model of hypnotic language that appears to be their personal theory with little reference to any evidence. The case examples are somewhat more interesting but the proposed dialogue is so academic that it's hard to imagine anyone in the real world taling like that.I suppose this book would appeal to overyly intellectualized NLP nerd types who get off on playing with jargon somewhere up above cloud 9 and with little grounding in reality. For us practical, flesh-based, earth folk, this book is a jargonized disappointment. Can you imagine saying the following to a living, breathing human being:"Just how is it that you know what you think you know...and before that? You must find some reference to which you pay deference. ... Now you know you must contain the where with all within for performing as desired because you know you are not yet you will, won't you?"Got it?Then buy the book and you can read a lot more sentences like the ones quoted above.

5-0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive Manual - Highly Recommended
"You can, by just saying some words, send people into wild and wonderful places and give them altered experiences, and possibly change their lives, empower them with new abilities and much more."
5-0 out of 5 stars Must have text into the study of hypnotic language
The structural and academic (rather clinical) approach adopted by the author successfully chunk down rather coarse and large concepts into tasty , easy to swallow chewy bits. Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Your money is leaving your wallet
This book is trying to train trance by putting the reader into a ***trance***.It worked for me, I tried to read it and then trapsed (tranced) right down to the used book store to see if someone could be tranced into buying it from me so that I could get something out of it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Concise and covers the foundation you need and much more.
This book has all the basics and most important things you need to get. It's a book full of all the things that you need to master, and full of great information, and is formatted really nicely. People who are really out to share the good stuff without the fluff. Giving it to you strait really teaching you how to fish for yourself so to speak. Having read many of bandlers great books I would say this is one of the greatest books on NLP/ hypnosis that I have read and give you great understanding about trance phenomena etc. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Self Hypnosis Book Ever..............
-5-0 out of 5 stars I'm amazed, this really works!
In this book, you are provided with several self hypnosis "scripts" to record onto a tape, in your own voice.I recorded the weight loss script a little over a week ago, and I, an avid chocoholic, have not had a bite of chocolate since!I'm no longer snacking between meals, I'm not tempted by sweets, and I couldn't be happier. There is at least one script in this book for everyone. The wording is wonderful, very positive, and extremely effective. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars A Great Tool for Therapists
Wallas' hypnotic stories are thoughtful and creative. They're great as a healing technique, especially for those clients less responsive to more direct approaches. They can be used both in individual and groupmodalities, with or without the client already being in trance. They'realso quite useful as a base to boost one's own creative juices.I highlyrecommend this book. ...
