captivating and comprehensive history of hypnosis
hidden depths is an absorbing and fascinating history of hypnosis --it's background, high and lows and it's influence in the birth of psychology. highly recommended.
Excellent Resource
This is a very thorough, well organized, superbly researched and intelligently written book on the history of hypnotism. I recommend it to all of my hypnotherapy students and feel it should be required reading for anyone with a serious hypnosis practice.
Poor on the Ancient World - Egypt, Greece, Rome
All books on the historical evolution of hypnosis - and there are a lot of them - start with Anton Mesmer in the 18th Cent. As a professionally-trained Archaeologist and a Certified Hypnotherapist with the National Guild of Hypnotists (NGH), I was excited by the idea of Robin Waterfield's book as it was supposed to chart the 'story' of hypnosis from Prehistory to Modern Times.Read more

Quite an interesting book
I come from a background of severe abuse.My therapist gave me this book to read at the begining of our work together. The book is basically written for clinicians to use during hypno-therapy sessions with clients, but my therapist does not use hypno-therapy and instead asked me to read and think about the stories while I was fully conscious.The book is basically a composition of many small, very simply written short stories about family life. I would compare them to stories one would write if one were writing for young children. The characters in the various stories are very neutral.Details about the characters are very few and far between...with the exception of positive emotions - which abound.

I found this book to be informing and enlightening... This is a positive review for Hypnosis: A Power...by Hewitt
This is basically a how-to book on hypnosis.Hewitt explains different strategies and way to try to hypnotize yourself and others.He encloses detailed instructions that prove to be quite helpful.He even includedssome of his past experience with himself and other patients.The mainfocus of this book is self-hypnosis, even though it does have quite a bitof other information.

One of a kind
A great book.The only one I'm aware of that gives you a non-BS procedure and absolutely thorough, usable programme to work through.Not sure I agree entirely with his non-trance model of the hypnotic process (as if I'd know), but this guy's sociological approach is, if anything, the better for his take on it.It's an absolutely superb and unique programme.Having worked through this you should then buy the handful of decent self-hypnosis books out there.Here they are: Simpkins and Simpkins, Effective Self-Hypnosis; William Fezler, Creative Imagery; Leslie LeCron, Self-Hypnotism (dated and completely redundant in parts, but still worth getting).After that you may profit from the standard textbook by Michael Yapko, Tranceworks, but only as a reference.TranceFormations, if gettable, by Bandler and Grinder, and Training Trances by Overdurf and Silverthorn are extremely useful for getting a handle on the concepts underlying this whole field.And you really do need an intellectual grasp on this stuff.But every other book out there is hopeless.Amazing but true.(One surprising exception, now I think of it, is Forbes Robbins Blair's Instant Self-Hypnosis: a rather commercial project but of actual interest and use.)But get the first three I mentioned, and maybe Straus's second book, Creative Self Hypnosis.You can read the entire texts of Straus's books on iuniverse's website.Email me (an utter novice but a prolific book buyer in this field) if you like.

Excellent and practical instruction on self-hypnosis
I mistakenly submitted my review for this book for the companion book, Creative Self-Hypnosis, but the review is the same. Straus' two books provide the reader with the best and most useful instruction on using self-hypnosis to achieve one's goals.In the process, Straus also presents a perspective on the mind that by itself can help people work more effectively toward their goals or solve personal problems. ...
