I suspect Mr. Burnett didn't actually read this book, but simply reacted out of his latent resentment of any claims gay folks might have on our common human imagination. (Telling flaw in his argument: He feels the need to tell us that some of his friends are gay. Ok. But I bet he doesn't like to listen to their stories.)

1-0 out of 5 stars Where is Vygotsky?
"Lev Vygotsky: Revolutionary Scientist" by Fred Newman and Lois Holzman purports to be a clear introduction to Vygotsky and his ideas but it's actually a muddled, mish-mosh in which Vygotsky's discoveries get lost in a sea of philosophical, political, and psychological jargon. For example, the authors devote pages to discussing the "Zone of Proximal Development," a concept central to understanding Vygotsky's significance to educational theory, but never bother to explain or define it for the reader. Moreover, the authors have an alarming axe to grind.Fired up by revolutionary zeal, they want to show that Vygotsky's ideas are thoroughly Marxian and can not be understood in any other context. Reading the book has something of the feeling of being invited to a seminar on financial planning and then discovering that the seminar is a poorly disguised infomercial for an expensive and unrenumerative annuity.Readers looking for a lucid introduction to Vygotsky should look elsewhere. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing
I was expecting a scientific survey of the emotions, but this is a literary and historical survey.
5-0 out of 5 stars An insightfully informative examination of the history of human emotions
Charles Darwin's survey of emotions serves as a starting point - and a focal point - for Stuart Walton's A Natural History Of Human Emotions, an insightfully informative examination of the history of human emotions, which considers how these emotions have fueled social and political change over time. Human emotion hasn't been a constant in as much as society has changed its rules for expression in both public and private and thus emotional honey has come to be valued while other emotions have risen to the foreground to dominate. Chapters use plenty of historical references from Biblical to modern times to chart these changes.

5-0 out of 5 stars Get a better understanding of the society in which we live.
How many of us had to go through "Diversity Training" or "DARE" or other groups and didn't feel quite right about it?
1-0 out of 5 stars Poorly written term paper
This neoconservative attack on psychology is no better written or researched than the average term paper. The author simply summarizies bits from other books and adds her cynical, hateful comments. She especially loves to find negative gossip about the great psychologists, as if they should have been perfect human beings. Do we really need to suffer through another Republican screed against psychology? This is an addition to the sub-genre of books by authors who hate the idea that psychlogists actually try to help people. How dare they? Don't they know that all the answers are in the bible?Does the author even understand that the psychologists she throws mud at actually promoted personal responsibility and social interest? She seems to have started her research in the library with a hatred of psychologists (who, after all, were only trying to find ways to help people) and only paid attention to whatever bits of misguided criticism she could find. Then she paraphrased other people's criticisms and called it a book. It's actually a pathography, a relentless focus on the negative. If that's how you want to spend your time, feel free. I regret wasting my time on it.

1-0 out of 5 stars Wondering who hurt joyce milton?
This is a very angry and hurtful book.It is both biased and gossipy. We were interested in reading the book because we believe that there is value in building each other up as people and would like to understand the difficulties that come with attempting to change the way we look at ourselves. The world is full of hurt and anger and we find it quite ironic that Joyce Milton would would write such a scathing angry mean spirited book about those who attempted to elevate humanity; whatever the outcome of those attempts.

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautifully written
A provocatively insightful, beautiful elegy on the transience of life.Phillips turns to these two thinkers not to provide a study of their theory as much as to discover in them the workings of his own imagination (and also to illuminate the not-so-conscious underpinnings of their own thought).3-0 out of 5 stars Interesting Book, Misleading Title
This is not a book for the casual reader.Oh no, he who picks up this book had better have his thinking cap firmly in place. The book is split into four sections, each distinctly different from the others yet related in their relevance to the studies of two men: Darwin and Freud.3-0 out of 5 stars Interesting questions, superficial answers
This book consists of four somewhat related essays on what Darwin and Freud have to say about how to live a life in the face of the transient nature of existence.Disappointingly, the essays fail to address this interesting question effectively. Instead, Darwin's Worms is a collection of brief, descriptive essays on a few elements of Darwin and Freud's thinking.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Much deeper than Freud
Fascinating book. The world of dreams and how they relate to Archetypes and Collective Unconsciousness goes much deeper than Freud's ideas of personal unconsciousness, repression, and sexual instinct as the main hallmark of psychiatric problems. Jung and the author's explanations about the Primordality of Self and the beauty as well as complexity of archaic ancestoral influence on our dreams make quite sense and seems to coincide with evolutionary perspective of behavior, including dreaming. I was going thus to rate the book with five stars until I read the last two chapters of the book. There, the author, becomes adventurous and somewhat careless and attempts to generalize his theories beyond what is known. He gets somewhat grandiose and thinks that he can now solve the problems of the modern humanity and the Earth. This sometimes happen to authors or theoreticians who are overtaken by their views. Overall, a book well woth reading.

4-0 out of 5 stars A fine and clearly written introduction to the field
This is one of the clearest introductions I could imagine to the field of sexuality studies--Bristow does a fine job giving an overview of a very dense and crowded theoretical field. The chapters on sexology and on Foucault and his influence on [homosexual] studies are the best; I think the section on postmodern theory was probably not a good choice. Most of the models Bristow proposes here--Lyotard, Baudrillard, Deleuze & Guattari--really don't fit into the rest of the discussion, which is mostly about the desirtes of individuals rather than of "culture," and thus seem like a sop to critical fashion. The space this section took up (half a chapter) could have been used to speak more in depth about Freud or Lacan, or to give a fuller account of newer psychological insights into sexuality. But otherwise, this is a great introduction for students. ... Read more
