5-0 out of 5 stars Great introduction to Freud with amazing illustrated slides.
The 'xxx for beginners' are marvellous not just because they give you a valuable grounding in forbidding subjects, allowing you to approach primary texts with more confidence, but because they are so entertaining, even in subjects you have little interest in.Though this book is a much-needed introduction to and exposition of Freud's basic theories, making you feel clever as you join the dots you always knew were there but for the intimidating jargon, the real joy is in the irreverent presentation, especially the illustrations. These are full of in-jokes about Freud's life and times which are not always treated explicitely in the text, as well as being technically expert, imaginative and, sometimes, bracingly shocking. So while it is pleasing, in these anti-Freudian times, to be reminded of the man's incalculable importance and influence, the illustrations offer an in-built critique that puts everything in perspective.Great fun.

5-0 out of 5 stars Sometimes a Book is just a Book
This book is just a book, but a better book than its successor of the same title by Richard Osborne. Mostly because it does not hang onto the relationship between Jung and Freud as long and focuses more on the theories of Freud. In fact, what I really enjoyed about this book is that gave a good round about summary of most of Freuds theories inside each book. Certainly acts a good stepping stone for those who need to know Freud in a hurry and wants the gist of his work. Richard Appignanesi displays good understanding of Freuds work and summarizes it well and concise. Reccomended for the prodigal psychologist.

5-0 out of 5 stars "I MAKE the world! This is my GIFT!"
(See page 79 for explanation and a very funny illustration of the second stage of psychosexual development). This book, in addition to being very informative, is also incredibly funny.Very well written and drawn; thoughin the form of a comic book, it is nevertheless a splendid introduction toFreud's life and work. The author and illustrator are quite witty as wellas knowledgeable, and in this book they have succeeded at what should bethe goal of all beginners' book writers: piqued my interest in the subjectand made me want to learn more.Would be a great supplementary text in acourse on Freud or on psychology/psychoanalysis in general.Highlyrecommended! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Neglected masterpiece
Although Hayek's influence on economics and political science has been profound, his work in psychology, of which this book is the sole product, is still relatively unknown. This is unfortunate, not only because Hayek is a great psychologist, in the same league as Helmholtz, Fechner, and Freud, but also because his more influential work is often based on the conceptual framework established in The Sensory Order.I can think of several reasons for the neglect of this book.First, it is not easy to read.Despite a lucid style, the ideas contained are so complex and expressed in so compressed a form that several readings are required to fully appreciate them.Second, the ideas are so revolutionary that we still fail to grasp their implications, though even Hayek himself, it should be said, failed to address them adequately. Hebb's Organization of Behavior, the first explicit proposal of Hebbian learning and cell assemblies, and Gallistel's Organization of Action, a compilation of classic works on motor coordination, contained similar ideas, but they are nowhere as original and profound as this book. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Fabulous!
I thought this book was fabulous! It seems that Burleson has researched nearly every detail on this 1925-26 safari. Thus, not only is it an interesting book on this portion of Jung's life but it is also a great insight into what was perhaps the last great walking safari across Kenya.Jung traveled by truck and railroad whenever possible, but the crossing into the desert of Sudan on foot makes for some interesting speculation.I loved the entire book and recommend it to Jungians and safari buffs alike. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Very interesting book.
It is a great book for anyone interested in sexual studies. It's interesting to anyone who likes seeing how views change through the centuries. The book is quite comprehensive and lists a good deal of sexual fetishes and deviances. While it may be a scientific book, some may find it a bit arousing to read some of the stories. Whatever you're pleasure, it's an interesting and fun book to read that's educational. You don't get that too often.

5-0 out of 5 stars pornography or psychiatric reference tool?
Although some of Dr. Richard von Krafft-Ebing's 19th c. theories and conclusions have been discredited or rejected by contemporary psychiatry, this is an incredibly interesting and shocking collection of personal individual case histories of "sexual perverts"--lust murderers, vampires, necrophiles, rapists, lesbian nymphomaniacs, zoophiles, sadists, masochists, pedophiles, coprophiles, fetishists, voyeurs, exhibitionists, defilers of dummies or statues, and other sick and twisted kooks and crazies. Each case history is numbered, giving the patient's background and deviant sexual history, although only the patient's initials are given. In all there are over 200 individual patients evaluated. The author Krafft-Ebing meant this highly controversial study to be accessible only in Latin and available only to the medical community so as not to corrupt the less well-bred. However, it has since been translated into several languages and has become essential reading for students of abhorrent and alternative sexuality and criminal psychology; it has also been read as a new form of pornography by some.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great edition of a great primary source.
As a student of the history of homosexuality, this is one of the best (and cheapest) editions of one of the best nineteenth century sources out there. Krafft-Ebing's work provides a quaint and often humorous reading today, but was largely considered on the cutting edge of sexology in its day and provides a great contrast with the works of Karl Heinrich Ulrichs, whose publications are finally in modern translation. This unabridged book is well worth the price. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Madness in Social Context
Ror Porter's excellent book places the history of madness within specific social contexts. We get a full picture of the perception of madness primarily as an emblem of difference which serves as a trigger for rejection by the dominant social forces of communities. Individuals outside the dominant social groups are confined, placed in asylums, and made invisible; Porter reveals to us that the "mad" weren't necessarily ill or disordered, but often individuals that were seen as a blight on the facade of cities---single women, orphaned children, the disabled, or artists whose freedom was considered a threat to more conservative rulers of town and country. Porter's description of madness as illness is equally compelling. He writes with elegance, style, and clarity. Highly recommended.

4-0 out of 5 stars Madness... Such Beauty!
This book was like nothing I have ever read before. The detail that was shown throughout the book really was able to make me see what it might have looked like, sounded like, felt like and sometimes even smelled like being in an asylum. The amount of information that Roy Porter put into this book was amazing. You might have thought he haad been in an asylum himself. I would absolutely recommend this book to anyone.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Essence of Vygotsky
A must for educators! Wink & Putney capture the essence of Vygotsky's pedagogy in this easy-to-read book. They provide insight into how Vygotsky differs from the traditional behaviorist views of classroom interactions. The authors provide many practical examples of theory-into-classroom-practice from a Vygotskian point of view.

3-0 out of 5 stars Interesting & refreshing book from a Civil War non-expert
With some 60,000 books on the Civil War, here is one that delves into a relatively untouched area.Although some of what R. Gregory Lande covers has been revealed by Thomas Lowry and touched on briefly by the likes of James McPherson and Earl J. Hess, none has put them all together.
5-0 out of 5 stars Refreshing
I purchased this book recently. It tells the history of the Civil War from a very unique perspective. I never knew that insanity had such a rich history during America's Civil War. The author writes very well, much like a novel, only this is a true story. You will enjoy reading this book!

2-0 out of 5 stars Malfeasance of Text
Dr. Lande has poorly researched the aspects of Civil War, preferring instead to demur to general logistics, rather than in-depth perusal of legitimate history. His writing resembles that of a high school report, with poorly constructed sentences, run-on phrases, choppy verbosity and a verbal cadence that approaches boredom. The true battlefield in the book is the one between the author and his lack of writing expertise.Read it with a grain of salt, and spare your wits for much better treatises on Civil War history. ... Editorial Review

Although critics would have New Age spirituality deemed trendy and fleeting, author and religious scholar Eugene Taylor offers a convincing testament to the historical worthiness and longevity of the alternative spirituality movement. Taylor, who is a lecturer in psychology at Harvard Medical School, explains that the New Age movement is a historically rooted movement that blends psychology and spirit. In fact, he calls it the "Third Great Awakening" in American religious life--an awakening that always springs from a "shadow culture" (most recently, the counterculture rebellion of the '60s). What makes this a fascinating read is its extensive and smoothly presented research. Taylor documents the "First Great Awakening," which dates back to the puritans and mystics of the 1600s and 1700s. Stretching forward in time, he presents the "Second Great Awakening," with profiles of leaders such as Emerson and Thoreau. This fascinating discussion elevates the New Age movement to an evolutionary necessity, which will no doubt raise the ire or gratitude of American readers. Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Explanation of America's Shadow
Eugene Taylor offers a great explanation of the shadow culture in America since the first Great Awakening in this book.He explains every aspect of the spiritual history of the United States, including the Quakers, Shakers, Transcendentalists, Swamis, and even the counter-culture of the 1960s.I especially enjoyed the section on the Americanization of the theories of Sigmund Freud and Carl Jung.I recommend this book to anyone with an interest in psychology or religious studies. As a student of both, I found this book to be an excellent mixture of both disciplines.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Development Of The Transpersonal In America
I feel compelled to review this book because of the several bad reviews its received so far.I agree strongly with the review below by A Reader from San Francisco. This is a remarkable history of what I see as the true spirit of America, which is about as far removed from the Puritan ethic as one can get.For better or for worse, only in America could the developments described here take place. What Taylor very successfully shows is that there is nothing at all "New Age" about this attitude toward the conventional.Above all, though, I like SHADOW CULTURE for an entirely different reason. This was the first of several recent books I've read that discuss how the 60s counter-culture really *was* successful in bringing about a change in the American mindset.Again, for better or for worse, this is *not* the same country it was 50 years ago. There continues to be strong resistance to this from the far Right (take, for instance, the *viscious* hatred they hold for Mr. & Mrs. Clinton). But, as Taylor shows in this book, the "alternative" approaches to almost everything have decidedly permeated our culture.(I even read recently a newsletter from a medical malpractice company *strongly* advising doctors to become familiar with alternative practices, as the doctors are likely to do harm and get sued if they don't know how those things interact with prescription medications!)There's no turning back from this.Where it's heading, though, remains to be seen.

2-0 out of 5 stars A Shallow Analysis Masquerading as Scholarship
Taylor does indeed present an overview of a certain sort of tradition that has not been well-surveyed to this point. His historiography, while not deep, is adequate, given the wide range of material. However, Taylor's own agenda so overwhelms the history that his assessment of particular figures is nearly useless. To contrast broadly the "Western rationalist tradition" with the "Western visionary tradition" - as he does in various ways at every opportunity - is little more than name-calling. His "faith" in something called "pure religious experience" is almost 100 years out-of-date -- has the author not realized that all experience (including religious experience) is shaped by language, culture, and tradition? Unsuspecting readers, beware: a position as a psychitrist at Harvard does not make up for a history that is little more than an advertisement for his own personal spiritual predilection. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars The Dangers of looking Backward
Rear view mirrors often contain the printed admonition that "objects in this mirror may be closer than they appear."Historical accounts of events nearly a century ago should also come with a disclaimer: "There is no history, only "histories" or accounts of past happenings as one person imagined them to be." Madhouse is the story of medical research gone overzealous; of needed oversight and peer sanctions being ineffective. Madhouse provides an account of Dr. Henry Cotton, a psychiatrist in search of a physical cause for mental illness. He performed surgery on numerous patients with the belief that their conditions were caused by focal infections.
1-0 out of 5 stars Sadly disappointing
As a psychiatric resident, I thought I might find something of educational value in this book. Instead I found a full-scale assault on psychiatry and psychiatrists. Although the book appears well researched, I found the author to have surprisingly little understanding or appreciation of modern psychiatric treatment. This, combined with his crusade against psychiatry, leads to spurious conclusions, broad generalizations and inferences that are misleading and untrue. I would not recommend this book to anyone.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic essay on misplaced medical physicalism
This book describes the treatment of a variety of psychiatric disorders using radical surgery by the American psychiatrist Joseph Cotton. He was a advocate of the doctrine of 'focal sepsis' which located the seat of mental illness in bacteriological infections of various body organs. While this may appear crank thinking now, Cotton was simply elaborating one trend in medical thinking at the time. Admittedly his elaboration was robustly surgical.'Infections' leading to psychoses were found in the teeth, the sinuses, the ileum, colon, almost all parts of the intestines, the cervix, testicles, and naturally the stomach.
