5-0 out of 5 stars This book will help Jehovah's Witness
I have seen this organization destroy families and lives. This book could save cult members.

5-0 out of 5 stars Will strongly influence your ideas on brainwashing
Beginning with the stories of brainwashed American soldiers in the Korean War and ending with positive suggestions on how to avoid brainwashing, the author of this book takes the reader through a fascinating and very informative overview of the subject. Avoiding long-winded philosophical musings on free will and determinism, she instead supports her case on the reality of brainwashing with what is known about the human brain via research in neuroscience. The book is rich in information and gives the reader an understanding of to what degree the human mind can be controlled and manipulated. The author gives several examples of mental manipulation, all of these being quite frightening scenarios. It is the opinion of this reviewer that the election results of last year serve as a good contemporary example of how the press, government, public relations firms, and well-financed private interest groups can exert intense influence on the minds of a large portion of the American public. The outcome of that election serves as a grim reminder of how a passive, uncritical frame of mind can be filled with ideas and impressions that bear no resemblance to reality.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best history of how Jung's ideas emerged
Jung and the Making of Modern Psychology is a landmark in Jungian scholarship. The author, Sonu Shamdasani, is a historian of psychology, with a specialization in Jungian psychology.
3-0 out of 5 stars Tangible and Intangible
As I was once a prospective PH.D. candidate, I can defnitely appreciate the quality and painstaking research that went into this finely written scholarly work. However, having been coached by a very fine Jungian psychologist, Dr. H. Skipton Leonard, PH.D., I find this book more a history of psychological thought than an in-depth study of Jung and ensuing practical applications.

4-0 out of 5 stars Meet a man you thought you knew...
Shamdasani's "cubist history" of Jung's core projects places them in their historical and intellectual context. His meticulous research incorporates an extensive review of the writing of Jung's contemporaries, Jung's own papers, Jungian commentary, and even some of Jung's personal marginalia. The scholarship alone is staggering.

In Freud's Free Clinics: Psychoanalysis and Social Justice, 1918-1938, Professor Elizabeth Danto looks at a familiar subject and, by dint of seriousscholarship and critical intelligence, manages to tell us fresh andimportant thingsabout it. Much of the cultural and social impact of psychoanalysis developedin the political-economic climate of Austria and Germany during the twotormented decades between the world wars. Danto demonstrates asensitiveunderstanding of that scene and its powerful influence on what became the ideology andpractice of psychoanalysis. This well-written book is essential reading for

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Introduction to Jung
This is one of the best introductions to the thought and life of Carl Jung.It covers all of his major psychological concepts in clear and concise language. The author has also included several "exercises" to help the reader in their own journey towards wholeness. For example, in one section, the reader answers a series of questions and then one is able to determine what "Psychological Type" they are.Several other exercises focus on Jung's method of active imagination and confronting one's own shadow. The book, then, is not just a dry academic presentation of Jung's psychology.Instead one becomes actively engaged with Jung's theories and through the exercises one can see how his ideas relate to our day to day life.In this sense, the author has made Jung much more enagaging and richer than many other standard "textbook" type introductions. The book is well illustrated with several photos of Jung and his world.I highy recommend this for anyone who is new to Jung and wants a good introduction to his thought.I have suggested this book to many of my friends and despite its brevity, it does an excellent job of capturing the heart of Jung's ideas on human nature.

5-0 out of 5 stars "Must" reading for all students of Jungian psychology.
Carl Gustav Jung (1875-1961) is an amazing man whose personal researches and inquiries into the mystical traditions of Hinduism, Buddhism, Zen, Taoism, Protestant and Catholic Christianity, Gnosticism, mythology, andpsychology, created a profound influence on succeeding generations of truthseekers is presented and surveyed in a single volume that does full andcomplete justice to the man and his thoughts. Jung: A Journey OfTransformation will enable the student of metaphysical, spiritual, andpsychological insight to fully grasp this original thinker's manifoldobservations, insights, ideas, and findings. Highly recommended. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Fame and the family
This very moving and fascinating book is a must read on several different levels. On one level, Sue Bloland is addressing an issue we are all so familiar with - fame and the human fascination with either achieving it or connecting with someone who has achieved it. Certainly, as she explains so simply and clearly, it is very human to idealize, envy and project many of our own fantasies (and power)onto the most successful people in whatever field they excel. As an analyst, the story she tells about her life with her father, Erik Erikson, expands and illuminates why some people are driven relentlessly to seek fame; what many issues the famous struggle with internally and silently, and what it is like to be the child in their shadow. She succeeds without jargon or over-intellectualizing in bringing to light the complexities of all these issues and in inspiring compassion for both the admired and the admiring.
2-0 out of 5 stars Ego Identity vs Despair
In the final stage of ego development, Erikson suggests that an acceptance of one's life is an indication of conflict resolution and maturity leading to end-life satisfaction. Having purchased the book because I knew and admired Harland Bloland prior to his recent death,I was eager to explore how this marriage and associationsmight have influenced thisbrilliant, humble and patient man who lived so generously in the shadow of others. Many of my questions have been answered about Harland, and my admiration for him has grown. While I did not have the opportunity to know Harland better, it is clear that he was, perhaps, the most centered member of the Erkison clan while he was with them.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great reading for those with or without famous parents

4-0 out of 5 stars Serves its purpose
The book is not extremely interesting but serves its purpose. I wouldn't recommend reading it unless you're very interested in the history of psychology, mainly because I think the topic is dry; the book is fairly well written, however. It would have been better if it had included a section on the impact of Aaron Beck, Albert Ellis, and Don Meichenbaum on the practice of psychotherapy. 5-0 out of 5 stars Into Psych Instructors - Pay Attention!
This is a wonderfully human view of human psychology. I really wish I had known about it when I started in psychology.5-0 out of 5 stars Very Entertaining and Educational
Raymond Fancher provides an entertaining account of the development of psychological theory based on the most significant contributoers to the field. He did an excellent job of weaving biographical information withtheoretical information. The stories were amazing and funny (especiallyDarwin and the bugs and DesCartes and the Fly).GOOD WORK!I feel like Ilearned alot without being mentally drained. ...
