4-0 out of 5 stars Can't we all just get along!
This book with mainly two things in mind: communication and understanding. The author's adopt their longstanding research about the world of typewatching into an intelligible book about the main areas of the work environment such as problem solving, conflict resolution, time management, etc.
4-0 out of 5 stars Better tool for self understanding than controlling others
Kroeger and Thuesen are not my favorite MBTI authors, but the Type Talk books are a decent reference for those who consider themselves beginner and intermediate level in the personality theory world. The explanations of the four preferences and how to look for them in one's own self or in others is reasonably well done.I particularly liked how they borrowed from Keirsey's theory and delineated the NT/NF/SP/SJ categories. They do not delve far into the dominant/auxilary/tertiary/inferior functions.
5-0 out of 5 stars Finding Ways to Communicate
All personality books offer generalizations and this is no different. The authors, however, do acknowledge the limitations of the Myers-Briggs test (in contrast to Please Understand Me, a worthless book).I had my staff take the MB test to see how they scored and then had them read and use the book in exercises to understand how their communication with and peception of others is affected by their personality. It was an interesting process and got them to realize that some of their interpersonal conflicts start in their head.A good choice for team building and organizational development. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars A Thorough Explanation and Illustration.
Where I work, we are close to the point in which we will be implementing the Response to Intervention model for determining learning disabled and emotionally disturbed student eligibility. This necessitated my pouring over this book a few times in the last few weeks. I have to recommend it strongly as it would be difficult to imagine a more thorough work concerning this very new subject. Its historical discussion of special education and learning disabilities was excellent as was the authors' review of recent laws and legislation. The authors' description of the ineptitude of the discrepancy model is compelling even for those of us who never endured zoo staffings which were often its inevitable result. For those of us in the field, there are endless forms and figures on these pages which can be used as inspiration behind the forms accompanying our district's transition; although, RTI adoption clearly isn't just a matter of forms. The most exciting aspect is that it will give us an opportunity to develop a new aspect to one's game. Now, we'll utilize scientifically based interventions and be able to initiate them while recording the results. The authors even offer a template for a novel psychological report based upon Response to Intervention. Their creativity and thoroughness was a pleasant surprise.

5-0 out of 5 stars Avoiding and Managing Errors

4-0 out of 5 stars Best the third time through
This book is a very complete and well done review of the history and mechanisms of human error.I can't think of a better reference book.It takes some work to extract the knowledge from the rather concentrated material, but it is well worth it.I generally like an easier, novel-type read, but there are plenty of other books on human factors that provide that. This one shines in the very systematic and complete treatment of the subject. And the bibliography is excellent, because it facilitates the easy branching out into all of his sources.Speaking of people mentioned, I knew I would like it when he spoke highly of Donald Norman. He also mentions Perrow's 'Normal Accidents', which is an excellent book. Also the quote from Ernst Mach can lead into a fascinating side trail of discovery on that man.But mainly his dedication of the book to Jens Rasmussen sent me off on a trail of his work, which is quite prolific.I think this is academia at its best - building on the work of predecessors to help further development of tools and understanding on how to solve practical, real world problems.

5-0 out of 5 stars THE BIPOLAR DISORDER SURVIVAL GUIDE
This is the best book on the subject I have ever read.It is an essential read for anyone with bipolar disorder. It really does gives you strategies not just to survive but to have a good quality of life too.

Excellent resource for families struggling with this devastating diagnosis. Lots of great information and help.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent guide to coping with bipolar disorder/manic depression
I have read many books about bipolar disorder, and this is one of the best I've found. It offers strategies for coping with the diagnosis itself, depression, and mania. It talks about diagnostic criteria, biology of the disease, medications, psychotherapy, and coping in both family and work settings. The fact that there is only an 8% chance of passing bipolar to your kids (20% if you include major depression) was worth the price of the book all by itself. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Knowing when you are manipulated by others will lighten your life burdens!
I remember buying this book when it hit the market, and now I'm buying it for others in my family to read.I'm sixty now so I've had plenty of time to see lots of games and manipulation, some of which I got pretty good at myself. No blame or shame involved. Most families pass down their learned ways of coping to the next generation so this stuff has always been going on.As I age I am very much less interested in other's games or even my own.Victims, tears, blame, "you caused my problems" I just leave to their owners.Life is too full of fun to be manipulated or guilt-tripped by anyone, and I do believe in total responsibility for my life and what happens in it.Read this and forgive yourself for your games and unplug from other's attempts to control you by any means they can. This book is one of my favorites!Recommended reading for those in the pangs of guilt from anyone, even parents or children.

4-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful but not too easy
If you are looking for a self-help book, you may be disappointed. I tried to read this book several times over the period of the last six years in attempt to resolve conflicts in my relationships, and could not struggle too far until now, when I have some background knowledge of relationships and look not for problem-solving recipies, but for more general understanding.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Tips on Marketing
I originally purchased and previewed this book for a client who is getting started in coaching. To my delight I discovered a host of tips on building a successful business and internet marketing.Authors Fairley and Stout are clear, specific and share a wealth of information for both new and experienced life and executive coaches. As a social psychologist and the author of "The Mighty Power of Your Beliefs" (Dream, Believe, Prosper), their ideas represent solid recommendations void of hype, fluff and ambiguous terms.I highly recommend this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent tips on establishing & growing your coaching business
Note that this is NOT a book about how to coach. This is a great resource for someone who is looking for a well structured set of tips on how to establish a new coaching practice. It is also a great reference for experienced coaches to dip into. The networking and marketing sections are particularly useful. Experienced coaches will likely find some new ideas, but may get more value by being reminded of techniques that already knew about but have just forgotten to implement...

4-0 out of 5 stars Clear and Concise Information You Can Use
I took a webinar based on this book and found the information presented intriguing enough to buy the book. It's a short read but filled with good, practical information. If there are certain people in your lives who rub you the wrong way, understanding how their style differs from yours could help to improve communication and make the relationship more effective and pleasant for both. This book was definitely worth reading and I've experienced benefits from it at work in a very short time.

4-0 out of 5 stars Must read for every one...
Of the several books I have studied on similar topics, this was one of the easiest to read through and apply.Although the title says People Styles at Work, it is equally applicable in personal life as well. The focus on studying behavior and inferring "style" from the same is much easier accomplished than trying to figure out the "temprament style" based on Myers Briggs.

Not as useful as his later work

4-0 out of 5 stars Not as well written as the companion book by the author
This book is very similar to "The Seven Principles for Making Marriage Work : A Practical Guide from the Country's Foremost Relationship Expert".It almost seems like a first draft of the other book. Not as well organized or clearly written. It is a very good book, but I would recommend "The Seven Principles" over this one.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of my favorites
This is one of my favorite relationship books. It really focuses on communication, and gives you real guidance on what to do, and what to watch out for, in your communication with your spouse.I asked my husband to read it after I had, and he very grudgingly accepted.Once he started reading it, however, he was quite impressed, and had many highlighters and sticky notes on his favorite parts.I highly recommend. Also, I suggest this over his "Seven Principles" book which I have also read. This seems more to be the real deal, and the "Seven Principles" more of a spin off. ... There is something to be said of a person who can go through a horrific journey such as the atrocities of Auschwitz and recall it with such clarity in order to help others. I was completely emotionally overwhelmed by the first half of the book-which is a narrative of what he experienced and fascinated with the next half which is an explanation of logotherapy.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent introduction to the many psychotherapies
This book provides excellent introductions to a variety of psychotherapies, indeed the most popular methods today. There are over 400 different therapies, and as such this book can not cover them all. However, the book does provide adequate detail for an indepth overview of the therapies, and comes highly recommended to beginning students and graduate students alike.

5-0 out of 5 stars It's about limbic resonance
There! I've spilled the beans. Now you know. But the journey these authors, all psychiatrists, take is a trip fantastic through not only neuroscience but through all the wisdom about loving attachment to other humans, nay, all mammals (a limbic system, not just mammary glands, hair, warm body temperature is our hallmark) so that we grasp why we must understand its power and necessity in our lives.

1-0 out of 5 stars Unstructured and very disappointing
Reading Waking the Tiger was an extremely frustrating experience, for several reasons. Mr. Levine contradicts himself repeatedly in his writing. On the one hand he repeatedly claims that revisiting painful memories does no good to trauma victims. On the other hand, in the case stories he uses to illustrate his method, the trauma sufferers DO recall their memories, very vividly, as part of their healing. Also, time and again throughout Waking the Tiger, Levine hints at the healing techniques to be revealed to the reader later in the book. But when I reached the end of the book, those appearantly magnificently efficient techniques were still unrevealed - and the only substantial advice to the reader seemed to be to visit a practioner of Mr. Levine's techniques, thereby reducing the book to little more than an advertising poster.
5-0 out of 5 stars waking the tiger
a worthwhile read for those who have or have not experienced trauma in their lives.

5-0 out of 5 stars A framework for understanding trauma
This is an excellent book for anyone who wants a mature view of what trauma is and how we heal from it. Peter Levine makes a compelling case that trauma is unique to the human species because our rational brains get in the way of the organism's instinctive physiological responses to life-threatening situations. In a case study near the end of the book, Levine clearly demonstrates his belief that re-exposure to traumatic circumstances as a way to heal must be gradual and at the organism's own pace. Cathartic experiences may be dramatic and lead us to believe we are helping, but in his view this approach risks deepening the traumatic symptoms. This is an excellent book, written in clear, non-clinical language that any non-professional can understand. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Start Here
This is the first book I read on Asperger's, and I am glad that it was.Tony Attwood is one of the leading experts on Asperger's.He really gets it and doesn't try to fit an Asperger child into a nt understanding of the world, but goes to the Asperger world. It has really helped me understand myself and my children better.Well done!I can't wait to see more from him.

5-0 out of 5 stars At the very top of my list
My son was found with some type of High Functioning Autism about two months ago. I'm a physician and behavioral researcher, though not in the area of autism or anything related to children or developmental disorders. I've read many books, scientific texts, online publications... you name it, in the past weeks. I've obtained very valuable information from all of them. This book does not go into the details of genetics or the neurological issues around Autism, in which I'm deeply interested, but I got that from other sources. However, it was from this book that I could draw a clear plan of action for my son and my family. Mr. Atwood must be a very smart and practical person. So far, of all that I've read, I'd put this book at the top, with the much more academic though less practical textbook on AS by Klin, Volkmar and Sparrow.

****
5-0 out of 5 stars Not triggering, a daily inspiration
Life Without Ed is one of the only books I have read on eating disorders that is NOT triggering (Jenni does not give any tips or tricks).I find hope and inspiration every time I read it. I actually carry it with me daily just in case I need to refer back to it.
