5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding contribution; must for Wechsler users
This is a terrific book -- it provides a lot of information on how to administer and score the WISC-IV.It has the same innovative approaches Kaufman has used in previous books on earlier Wechsler tests -- new ideas on interpretation and scoring that make sense. With the added viewpoint provided by Flanagan, a specialist in the cross-battery assessment, this book is a merging of two interesting approaches; unique project by two top psychologists in their prime. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A useful and inspiring resource
This book, intended for therapists, is a comprehensive, compassionate, and accessible guide to what Najavits establishes is the first crucial step for someone struggling with PTSD and substance abuse: learning to feel safe. It is also an excellent resource for patients who want to help themselves. What I like best is that the book is filled with checklists, stories, exercises, and quotations such that I can open to nearly any page and find ideas that are both practical and inspirational. In short, this is a great book.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Very Powerful Book
Thank you for writing such a great book.I have suffered from addictions for years, tried many books and many methods.Working with a group or individual is one thing, but for me, nothing helps more than a book. It's on call twenty four hours a day and I can easily reference it.As far as books go...this one is by far the best. The most comprehensive and in-depth book I've read so far.It provided tremendous support and guidance on issues that often result in isolation. Most of all, it didn't talk down to me as a reader. That's something I don't need!Thank you for making this book available and writing it in such a helpful way.

5-0 out of 5 stars Extremely useful volume for professionals
I can see why this book got such rave reviews and is such a best-seller.It's a superb book, offering both real insight into trauma and addiction, as well as hands-on clinical tools. As someone in the field, I have found both the philosophical and practical aspects of Najavits' work incomparable. On top of the impeccable professionalism, is her impressive writing. This is a must buy for anyone interested in this area. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Superb overview of research as it stands
Allowing for the inevitable time lag between copy editing, proof reading and final publication, this two volume set is as near as anyone will get at present to comprehensive state of the art reveiew of trends in research and therapy.Having digested the previous version - one volume with a blue cover - I was a little sceptical about the added-value that any new edition might bring.Honestly, I could not have been more wrong. There is a great deal more orgnaic science in this volume and the sections of therapy and interventions are well worth reading carefully. This review is not about the content of the book, more a case of witnessing that if you have bought the blue book, you should buy this set. ... Read more

This is certainly a marvellous book to read! In fact, this is my first book from John C Maxwell's collection. Iagree with the author: "The difference between average people & achieving people is their PERCEPTION of & RESPONSE to FAILURE", although I am inclined to add that there are a few other equally important factors as well.

Editorial Review

When Harville Hendrix writes about relationships, he discusses them not just as an educator and a therapist, but as a man who has himself been through a failed marriage. Hendrix felt the sting of his divorce intensely because he believed it signaled not only his failure as a husband but also his failure as a couples counselor. Investigating why his marriage dissolved led him to start looking into the psychology of love. Marriage, he ultimately discovered, is the "practice of becoming passionate friends."Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Repackaged psychoanalysis
The basic idea of this book is that problems in marital relationships are caused by childhood psychological wounds. Those wounds are unconscious, but, according to the author, we all had them. Many of the exercises (e.g., listening exercises) would be helpful, but they are basic, and many of them are not really based on the theory. The author says repeatedly that we were "whole" humans in the womb, but we were damaged as children, and we need a healthy marriage to make us whole again. Some of the examples in the book reveal a patriarchal mindset. For example, in the section about "rewriting scripts" for arguments that a couple has repeatedly, the author suggests two alternatives that give the man what he wants, but no options for giving the woman what she wants. But if I object to that, I suppose that it must be because I was wounded as a child!

5-0 out of 5 stars Love-filled Book
Falling in love is wonderful, but when the divorce rate is so high that less than 1 in 2 marriages succeed, many people want and need relationship advice, communications skills, and marriage counseling to make sure that their love can last. This book will help any couple find the love they want. Harville Hendrixhas more than 30 years' experience as an educator and therapist. He specializes in working with couples in private practice, teaching marital therapy to therapists, and conducting couples workshops across the country. This book will be very useful for just about any couple.

This book was prescribed for me in my first year of my now 7 year marriage. It highlighted many mysteries and removed many of my mythical but un-useful beliefs about 'the power of love.'It is remarkable in its power to change and its simplicity. Some of the insights have been applicable to all aspects of my life.I look back with real gratitude for the insights I gained from this book.I've often recommended the book to others, always with positive feedback. ... A fairly good text, it probably covers the field better than other available sources. However, the selection of illustrations seem to be chosen based on how much profanity they can include. I realize that crisis situations involve people who don't monitor their usage, but why include every F--- and other curse word when they aren't needed to convey the meaning. 5-0 out of 5 stars An invaluable tool in the field of mental health.

3-0 out of 5 stars surface but instructive
I had great hopes for this book. After I glanced at it, I purchased it immediately. It certainly does reorient you to the distinctions between goals, objectives and diagnoses, but after using it for a while, it just wasn't sufficient for those more complicated kids. I'll keep referring to it, not so much for information but to place me back on course when I'm stuck and blocked- (happens more than I'd like, when the stress gets to me,) yet I still would suggest, for more seasoned professionals, a higher level of diagnostic and prescriptive content. 4-0 out of 5 stars A great aid for clinicains.
If you work with adolescent this is a great aid to writing treatment plans for a beginner or a skilled clinician. It makes following this state regulations a lot easier.I would definitely recommend this book to all my colleagues. This book has helped me write treatment plans quicker and easier then I ever thought possible.I love this series of books.

5-0 out of 5 stars A godsend for the busy clinician
I work in a mental health agency as an intake clinician, interviewing families and children and writing assessments to be used for case disposition and treatment planning.I see 4-6 families weekly and my work load has been eased enormously with this addition to my library. It sits right next to my DSM-IV and I use it daily. The language for long term goals and therapeutic interventions are clinically sound and there are a number of options in each to tailor for specific cases. ... Editorial Review

There is little sugar but lots of spice in journalist Rachel Simmons's brave and brilliant book that skewers the stereotype of girls as the kinder, gentler gender.

5-0 out of 5 stars Girls Need To Make Peace With Conflict
I found this book, "Odd Girl Out," not only helpful but also cathartic. It answered a lot of current questions I have about raising an adolescent daughter by enabling me to go back and visit my own youth and remind me of my own experiences. This book illustrates how easy it is for mothers raising daughters to live vicariously through them and see how it brings out old fears and insecurities. It was a re-education.
4-0 out of 5 stars Part of the Puzzle, Read It, but Don't Stop Here
You know, this is actually a topic that is near and dear for my heart and it did have a lot of interesting examples and data...but like Fast Girls before it, this reads a lot like someone's research paper and doesn't really delve too far into the history of aggression (in boys or girls) beyond a barest basics that most people probably already know.Simmons also doesn't offer any statistics, she mentions repeatedly that there really isn't any research on this, but I felt like this was just a big book length article that focused on her own personal fascination with the topic and the scope of the book really doesn't go much beyond her own group of interviewees.I was also kind of annoyed by the great deal of repeated information, it's as if in the absence of statistical data to support her theory she just keeps saying the same thing over and over.
5-0 out of 5 stars Dads and Educators ALSO Need to READ This Book!!!
The book opened my eyes into a girls' world I'd never realized existed. A father, I got the book to understand the social dynamics my daughter navigates. It's like a gardner suddenly discovering that flowers have aromas, weeds have deep roots, and roses have thorns.

5-0 out of 5 stars moving in the spiral
Spiral Dynamics is an elegant view of evolving value systems in individuals and cultures which help us to see our own filters as we attempt to meet people where they are. It is not about stereotyping, although certain "memes" will bristle that it could be....the intention ofDr. Beckin carrying on the work of Clare Graves, is to use this information to work beneath the surface of major social issues, to untangle obstacles to positive change by tracking the symptoms back to the source where the belief systems at work operate...so they can be addressed in a way that will resonate and increase the chance for movement in the spiral.....which effects us all since we are all connected. There are endless possibilities for using this system....having an understanding of this expanded perspective will serve to broaden our own.

4-0 out of 5 stars basic book for memetic studies
This book came to my attention through reading Ken Wilber's books. For all interested in his All-Quadrants-All-Levels model the information offered in Spiral Dynamics is fundamental to map the levels presented in Wilber's 4 Quadrants model. This book also has much practical information useful for teachers, psychologists, business coachers, social assistants, managers and anyone that deals with group dynamics [In other words: everyone, because all of us interact in several groups in our lifetime].There

5-0 out of 5 stars Real Help for Parents and Therapists
Very helpful for therapists and parents who want to use the Collaborative Problem Approach with explosive kids.Using plenty of examples and scripts, Drs. Green and Ablon help to walk people through the approach, through common pitfalls, and provide guidance and support for therapists working with families.A must-read for every family therapist and teacher who has ever worked with an explosive child.

5-0 out of 5 stars Creating a better world
I am reading "Treating the Explosive Child" and simply cannot put this book down - if everyone incorporated this approach into everyday life, what a humane world it could be.Thank you, Dr Ablon and Green for the expertise you are sharing and disseminating to the world - in my eyes, you are true heroes.

5-0 out of 5 stars Finally an answer
Ever since my child was about 4 I have been wondering what he "had"....what his behavioral issues were all about.Three therapists later, psychological testing, and countless offerings of advice from friends, parents and teachers I have finally found an explanation that rings true and speaks to my husband and me. My son is now 14.How I wish I had known about this "CPS approach" years ago. The approach is not "Magic 123" (and therefore simplistic) but if it's followed, it works.I first read Dr. Greene's other book aimed at parents called "The Explosive Child" which is also wonderful."Treating Explosive Kids" is directed at therapists and is therefore more dense and a little more difficult to understand for the lay person but the book is filled with dialogue between professionals, parents, and kids which brilliantly and realistically illustrates how to treat a child who is inflexible, explosive, and therefore incredibly frustrating.Guess what:these kids are not simply being manipulative or looking for attention. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Promising intervention but reservations from an EMDR client
EMDR may be an excellent form of overcoming trauma, and the research tends to suggest it does, although if you read the literature in a disinterested way, you will find there are many mixed reports on study results. Some find EMDR equal to or better than Cog/Beh Therapy intervention; some find it better; some find it not as effective. As someone who has conducted experimental research AND has undergone EMDR for trauma, I wish to point out several issues that should be addressed, even for true believers.First, EMDR is a perfect intervention for a technological age: after all, don't all our life's problems supposedly have a technological solution. Our culture says so, but of course, history tells us otherwise.Spiritual meaning, social integration, a personal credo, culture and religion still appear to be the ingredients that hold us together..or as Paul Tillich says, "Our ground of being."Technology may be helpful but it is ultimately ancillary.Of course, those who suffer from trauma may require immediate relief, and if EMDR can reduce suffering efficiently and quickly, that's fine.I had about 10 EMDR sessions and they helped me immensely.HOWEVER, that being said, one must look a bit further.First, one must consider the individual client him/herself.EMDR helps us return to a traumatic event, see it more objectively, and hopefully allows us to use our reasoning faculties which may not have been in play during such events owing to stress, shock, immaturity, ignorance, and so forth. However, I believe we all have varied levels of experiencing or "reliving" memory. Some can visualize quite easily and can "see" the experience as vividly, even more vividly than the true life one. In keeping with Gardner's idea of "multiple intelligences," we should consider that different individuals have different "intelligences" in reconstructing or reliving events. Furthermore, we should consider that individuals have varying degrees in their ability to make associations. While a trauma may be a single event or several similar events, in all likelihood they have developed as narrative themes that compose the self-concept the client has.The better a client can connect the trauma to such themes, the more holistic the effect. A good EMDR clinician can encourage this reconstruction, but one should be aware that we have different cognitive styles.
5-0 out of 5 stars Recommend!
Easy to read and helpful for understanding the process of EMDR.I would have to agree with the previous reviewer Laura M that PEACEFUL HEART : A Woman's Journey to Healing is a must-read.Aimee Jo Martin's story clearly illustrates and details her journey with successful EMDR treatments.Quite powerful if you want to really see how effective EMDR can be.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Good Condition
Book was in excellent condition, inexpensive, and came in a resonable amount of time.

2-0 out of 5 stars Think of how many prostitutes you could afford with $106!
This book has made me wonder just what the hell psychologists have been doing for the last 100 years.Used in a large number of college classrooms around the nation, and along with the hefty $100+ price tag, I was rather expectant as I began reading this colorful text that was to offer an introduction to abnormal psychology. And if I might be blunt, after finished the whole text, I'm left with the conclusion that either psychology is one of the emptiest modern "sciences" practiced today, or this book fails to achieve its introductory purpose.Due to further research and careful observation of my professor, I surmise the case is more of the former.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Question your assumptions and challenge what you think you know
This book provides a well-organized survey of issues that limit our reasoning abilities:
3-0 out of 5 stars Should Have Been Better Than It Was
Gilovich starts this book of with a real bang! After reading the Introduction, I thought this book would be really interesting and change the way I look at the world. He writes in a college-teacher tone that will not be approachable to those he most needs to reach. In other words, I really don't need a book to tell me to avoid holistic cretins, ESP, psychics, mysticism, and all that other garbage.
5-0 out of 5 stars Required for all psychology students!!!
This book is a contemporary classic that should be required reading in all psychology programs. As a psychologist, I am regularly appalled by how few trained psychologists know of the research discussed in this book, indeed, of decision science in general!! It only goes to show, there's scientific psychology (of which this book qualifies), and then, well, there's the other 99%...the crap, fluff, unsupported, unscientific, claims and practices that arise out of pseudo-scientific approaches, misinterpretations of data, and fallacious assumptions and conclusions. As an exemplar of what's good in a field rife with methodological manure and hocus pocus B.S. (e.g. psychotherapy, psychiatry, etc.), this book really shines. Read it and discover why some of psychology really is a science. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Extremely helpful
I don't normally write reviews, but I feel really strongly about this one. I have "pure o" OCD which is harder to treat because there are no compulsions. Even so, this book (along with an amazing therapist) really saved me. Every night when I would lay there panicking about the terrible fears in my head, reading this book always helped me feel better (at the very least, it distracted me as is explained in the 4 steps). I wish I could give it more than 5 stars because it has such an amazingly positive impact on my mental health. After 5 years of living a much improved life by this system, I would highly recommend this to anyone with anxiety.
3-0 out of 5 stars Useful for some types of OCD, but simplistic and judgmental
This book teaches OCD sufferers four steps to use to control their disorder, starting with "relabeling" their fears and urges as just a symptom of a disorder, rather than "something real." By reading the case studies, I figured out that "relabeling" means telling yourself, "My urge to perform my compulsive ritual is not a supernatural omen that something terrible will happen if I don't perform the ritual; it's just a symptom of OCD."The author never actually explains this, however.
4-0 out of 5 stars An excellent self-help book
I recommend this book to all of my patients who have symptoms of OCD.It is one of the most helpful books on the subject ever written. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Useful insights, practical exercises.
Written in 1979, People Skills is a classic in the field of communication skills. Like many people, I decided to read this book after it turned up on a must-read list for consultants and business people. The book offers a useful and practical guide to someone looking to improve their effectiveness in interpersonal situations. It is broken down into Listening Skills, Assertion Skills, and Conflict Management Skills.
3-0 out of 5 stars Starts strong, ends weak
Most books give you 2-3 really good nuggets of insight, hidden in a dry prairie of "heard-it-all-before." Such is the case with People Skills. Most of the content is obvious - have a pleasant demeanor when listening, reflect what you've heard, and so on. Not very insightful.
5-0 out of 5 stars Classic and Vital
This was part of my "assigned reading" when I first became an IT consultant. It does a fantastic job of providing practical guidance to anyone who interacts with people (i.e., all of us). There are numerous example dialogues and many gems of advice. ... Read more

This book gives a good insight to handling difficult people in any day to day situation.Reading this book is a good aid on how to learn techniques to handle difficult people, as well to give the reader aperspective to not take negative behaviour personally.Being aware of common traits of difficult people gives the reader an opportunity to practice what they read, in the workplace or their personal life. 2-0 out of 5 stars too much ego
For someone who has spent so much time ostensibly obliterating his ego, Pinchbeck uses the words "I, me, and mine" with surprising frequency."Breaking Open the Head" was a brave and well-told story, and Pinchbeck does have great skill at telling the tales of his own adventures down the rabbit hole.He is, at his best, a journalist with a skill for wrapping his own experience into fascinating questions.
