5-0 out of 5 stars Fair coverage of a very difficult cluster of topics.
Since this book deals with evil, some parts are difficult reading. This is a fair, balanced scientific exploration of evil from minor to maximum, i.e. demonic possession. Not based on sensationalism.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Truth Shall Set You Free
In The People of the Lie, Dr. Peck taps into human evil. He presents case studies of his own and shares with us in depth of their evil, depression, madness, and narcissism. In the case of Bobby, a depressed fifteen-year-old boy, he had a brother who committed suicide with a rifle. His parents gave him his brother's suicide weapon as a Christmas present: this was an act of evil. Bobby was a victim of his parent's evil.
5-0 out of 5 stars explains why evil often causes confusion
If you have ever experienced or been frustrated by people who seem to have a hidden agenda then you will enjoy and benefit from this book. The author states (some are paraphrased) and explains the following:

3-0 out of 5 stars ok
the book came in a reasonable amount of time but was not the same quality as was initially stated. It said the book was brand new but it had bent corners.

3-0 out of 5 stars Book NOT in Good condition.
Company was prompt and service was great. However, the book was listed in 'good' condition and it is not. I can ignore the writing and hilighting but it had a defect in which it was missing about 50 of it's pages. To me missing pages does not qualify as 'good' condition. These people obviously do not check the quality of thier books.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Textbook I've Ever Read
I would like to find Neil Carlson and shake his hand. This is is without a doubt one of the best textbooks I've had the pleasure of using.

Editorial Review

It's true that politicians blink much more frequently when they're lying, but what other behavior clues do people inadvertently give off? If you want to know if you're being boondoggled, how to tell if your date is interested in a serious relationship, or if you should take that new job, Jo-Ellan Demitrius will help you figure it all out. She gives away the tricks of her trade--jury consulting--in this eye-opening handbook for predicting the behavior and revealing the thoughts of others. She's consulted for more than 600 jury trials, including the O.J. Simpson, Rodney King, and John DuPont cases, as well as for Fortune 100 companies. If her name rings a bell, it may be because she's been on Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars good book -- but forgets autism
As a person who has a difficult time reading people, due to autism, I found this book useful and interesting.Nevertheless, the huge exception to all of her information is the behavior that people on the autistic spectrum exhibit. And she never, anywhere in the book, addresses the differences.

5-0 out of 5 stars Well thought out, balanced, concise, and to the point
If you look for reliable information thoughtfully presented, as I do, you will like this book. The first author is a top-flight legal consultant specializing in jury selection. She knows what she's talking about. I especially liked the objective, analytic attitude that permeates the book. The authors never forget to qualify their statements and warn the reader that there always are exceptions and false leads. What a difference from the watered down platitudes delivered with solemn confidence that are all too common in the self-help literature! The first chapter speaks about the method---objectivity is key; there are no silver bullets; practice makes perfect. The second chapter lays out the people-reading process in broad strokes. Subsequent chapters take on specific issues: physical appearance, behavior, context, etc. Most specifics are plain common sense but there is great value in having them gathered together and systematized. There is a one-page summary of the key points at the end of each chapter. Two detailed appendices list the various signs and their possible interpretations. All in all, this book bears all the marks of a useful and trustworthy source. I enjoyed reading it and I'm sure I'll refer to it every now and then. The sequel, 'Put Your Best Foot Forward,' is good too.

4-0 out of 5 stars Overall well written
I had high expectation for this book. The book is enjoyable, and I can so recognize so many people descrived as liars etc around me, and want to explore how well to learn toread the other people.

1-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful to learn about attachment
This was one of many books I have been reading regarding attachment. This book had my sons name written all over it.I am a mother of a foreign adopted son with many issues ahead. This has by far been the best one I have found. It showed examples of problems along with a recommended solution to correcting the behavior. We are now seeing some much needed changes in our household.I highly recommend this selection.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic!
Daniel Hughes really understands children with RAD! I especially would recommend this book for parents adopting or doing foster care.

5-0 out of 5 stars highly recommend
We recently adopted a 9 yr old boy. This book helped me understand the source of his behavior and have more compassion. There weren't a lot of methods to help me cope, but I hope his other book will have that.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book
I bought this book after being diagnosed as Bipolar II.For many years I've been diagnosed as having PMS, PMDD, and most forms of depression. It wasn't until I experienced a major depressive episode (suicidal), became euphoric while on antidepressants, and saw a good psychiatrist that I felt I was finally diagnosed properly.
5-0 out of 5 stars The best book for patietnts about bipolar spectrum disorders.
This is a very important book in these days when many depressed patients are placed on antidepressants after a too short 5 minute visit to their primary care doctor. The National Comorbidity Survey found that 15-20% of patients with depression may be part of the bipolar spectrum. These patients will not get well and stay well with antidepressants alone as their treatment. Dr Phelps explains clearly how to tell if your depression may be part of the bipolar spectrum and tells you about the treatments that can help. I have recomended Dr Phelps website at psycheducation.com for some years. I find the book to be just as good. There is very balanced presentation of all the controversial issues.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good, if not a tad condesending
As a Bipolar II sufferer I agree with all that has been stated by the other reviewers. However this books greatest failing is in its definition of Bipolar II as "soft" bipolar. It is a seperate illness and should not be compared as such.Bipolar sufferes have greater highs, but bipolar II sufferers have greater lows (which also tend to last longer than bipolar I).

1-0 out of 5 stars CBT rips off the Buddha
CBT theorists tend to present in a lucid fashion ideas that have been therapeutically effective for centuries, or in the case of Mindfulness, millennia.Unfortunately, the authors of this book, in fine CBT tradition, manage yet again to misappropriate the work of others and call it 'a new approach'.There is nothing new in what CBT does, other than to re-label as 'evidence-based' the ideas of other innovators after some dubious random-control trials. If the reader wishes to avoid supporting the political recycling of every other therapy ever created, he/ she would better serve patients, clients and self by reading original texts from, for example, Buddhism, which are more authentically authored than CBT's eclectic bag of techniques. However, as with any heavily funded political movement, I suspect that the CBT movement will continue selling old rope as new as long as we want knowledge served up as fast food. It's enough to make any self-respecting therapist relapse into depression!

5-0 out of 5 stars Depression researcher
A fantastic book explaining the basics behind previous research and how we've come to arrive at the new mindfulness-based concept.Highly recommended for new clinicians wanting to further expand their understanding to a brief background of the cognitive aspect of relapse of depression as well as the direction future research appears to be heading.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book Used in My Dialectical Behavior Therapy Class

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Relationship Guidence
. . . from some people who know what they're talking about. I could have used this when I was in Junior High. I have been through a series of broken relationships during the past few years, mostly because I am by nature a trusting person, and ignore warning signes until the vehicle (i.e. relationship) is fixing to dive off a cliff. Since moving to "Yahoo City" almost two years ago, God's given me lots of trials to help me wise up. Now I am learning to get to know people before I get too attatched to them. I am still reading this book, but have already gotten a lot out of it. Straightforward, sensible, balenced advice. I highly reccomend.

5-0 out of 5 stars if you werent taught, this book will teach you
I read this book a while ago, and I think I liked it so much I read it too fast :) But I see on here that there are some not so good reviews. I thought this book was fantastic! If you are familiar with Dr. Henry Cloud and Dr. John Townsend, you are familiar with their biblicaly backed up work. In this book, they explore what makes an unsafe person, how we attract unsafe people, and how to find safe people. Another "problem to solution" book of theirs. They give a solution after breaking down the problem. After reading this book, I realized that some of the realationships in my life were unsafe and why. This book gave me courage to let go of these unsafe relationships or challenge them. To some people, determining safe people comes easy, but it doesnt always come easy to me. I may have an internal inkling that something isnt right, but I dont know why or how to solve it. This book is helpful in that regard.

5-0 out of 5 stars Discernment versus Judgement
Discernment is objective, it alerts us that some people, places, and situations are legitimate unsafe conditions to have in our lives. Discernment is having a clear head to choose to say no and be available for safe and healthy realities. And you are able to wish them well so they one day may find the way. Then you let go and forget about it. It is in the past.

5-0 out of 5 stars Clinicians Thesaurus6th Ed.
As a clinician in an Emergency Room, this is a very important tool of the trade. This offers concise, descriptive information on the symptoms, and enhance accurate report writting. It is compliant to HIPAA/JCAHO guildlines. It's presentation is easy to understand and presentation has an interview like flow to the presentation of the information. It offers definations, formats, concise medical terminalogy, and dual listing with the MSM-IV-TR as well as the ICD-9.

2-0 out of 5 stars Where is the CD?
While the text portion of this book is acceptable there is NO CD that accompanies it. That one is told after buying the book is available by spending another $50.00 to get edition #6 which was just released this month. I wished I had known that before...would have saved the $$$ and bought #6.

5-0 out of 5 stars Every clinician will benefit!
This guidebook offers so much you will use it time and time again. With sections on what questions to ask, different formats for writing reports and progress notes, abbreviations, DSMreference, and medical conditions that masquerade as mental illness, you will find this book invaluable.Great for students who are new to diagnosis and report writing and a wonderful tool for the skilled clinician in avoiding stale reports and progress notes. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars I wish I'd changed my mind before purchasing this
Gardner's book is full of banal and often incorrect observations. It's hard to believe he has received over 20 honorary degrees from universities around the world if his ideas are this unoriginal. He chooses the staggeringly bad examples of Margaret Thatcher, George Bush and BP CEO John Browne as people who have successfully changed minds. He doesn't mention that Thatcher and Bush antagonized large sections of their countries' populations, completely failing to change their minds, in fact hardening their positions of opposition; in large part due to these leaders' own refusal to ever change their minds or consider alternative policies. Gardner lavishes praise on Bush for switching from isolationism to an interventionist foreign policy after 9/11, without any mention of the PNAC team that had already planned to invade Iraq even before 9/11.
2-0 out of 5 stars Changing minds with one point of view
I found the first 50 pages or so to be intriguing, after that it became a grind to endure. Mr. Gardner makes very indirect references to the impact of the media on the vignettes that he recounts, yet seemingly asserts that the individuals involved acted in a vacuum.
1-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing
Changing Minds is very disappointing - average to very poor writing, poor development of ideas, ideas that have been shown to be weak or invalid constructs, and very little substance. You will learn very little about how to change anyone's mind or your own.Reading this book and finishing it is a grind. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The most amazing textbook ever written!
This is the best textbook I have ever used. It is engaging, VERY well written- basically- a page turner that will leave you with a true understanding of the concepts of cognitive science and learning. It is a joy to read, I have taken it with me for grad. school and will always have it close. Though it is an amazing reference tool to have around, this is really a joy to read--read it even if it is not for a class. I cannot say enough good things about this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Human Learning
This is an amazingly well written text. Ms Ormrod actually practices what she preaches, so the book is organised as an exemplar of how to help students learn. I bought the book as an optional text for a Masters inEducation, then I sat up one night to check it out. It became compulsivereading, very hard to put down. It gives a broad overview of EducationalPsychology thinking over a wide period of time, and encapsulates it. It isfull of useful references. Many of my colleagues have borrowed this bookfor various courses and for course development for educational projects.

4-0 out of 5 stars This is a good practical reference book for teachers.
Human learning gives a good basic understanding of learning theory for teachers and others who are interested in educational psychology. There are some very good examples for all theories discussed. The book jumps around abit and some of the explanations are too technical. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome for intro. to psychology
It seems that many other books in psychology do not offer information in such a broad and defined view to the wide content that creates Psychology as a science. I would recommend this book to someone instead of the For Dummies or Complete Idiots Guide series. The logic behind many concepts are shown in cartoons, pictures, and presentations. I would say this book, in many aspects, is descriptive.

Sometimes a writer has to revisit the classics, and here we find that "gonzo journalism"--gutsy first-person accounts wherein the author is part of the story--didn't originate with Hunter S. Thompson or Tom Wolfe. Aldous Huxley took some mescaline and wrote about it some 10 or 12 years earlier than those others. The book he came up with is part bemused essay and part mystical treatise--"suchness" is everywhere to be found while under the influence. This is a good example of essay writing, journal keeping, and the value of controversy--always--in one's work. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Trippy Man
I'm not one for hardcore drug recreation, but I'm still very curious about it. I always ask people about their perceptions while under the influence and no one is able to articulate it. I think I have a pretty good understanding now when it comes to the effects of hallucenogenic drugs. I realize each individual has a different experience, but it takes an intellectual with an open mind to even begin to relate it to others.
5-0 out of 5 stars Huxley A Brain Change God!!!!!
Hmm Timothy Leary; Aldous Huxley; Robert Anton Wilson; David Icke; Terrance Mckenna; Aleister Crowley...
4-0 out of 5 stars Are you experienced?
Huxley's `experiment' in The Doors of Perception was a right of passage for many in my generation, and it's interesting to have such an intelligent analysis of the experience. He does waste a lot of words on something that is indescribable, but it seems to have been written in the first blush of excitement. And Huxley makes some very sound observations, as well, that have probably helped many people reconcile their own indescribable experiences.

Editorial Review

When Terrence Real was studying to be a therapist, he acceptedthe notion that women suffered depression at rates several times thatof men. Now he believes that conventional wisdom is wrong, that therehas been a great cultural cover-up of depression in men. Real isconvinced of the existence of a mental illness that is passed fromfathers to sons in the form of rage, workaholism, distancedrelationships from loved ones, and self-destructive behaviors rangingfrom stupid choices at work and in love to drug and alcohol abuse. 5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for understanding the man inyour life
This book is very helpful in understanding depression in men.My husband and I have two copies and I have sent copies to others who are suffering from depression.
5-0 out of 5 stars Brace Yourself
I am on my second reading of this book. My first reading profoundly moved and disturbed me. It's like having a veil lifted and seeing with a little bit more clarity some of those things about myself I've never been able to quite understand. If you've ever had those moments when you catch yourself wondering, "Why am I not feeling (emotionally) anything at this moment?" or "Why did I get that angry?" you might want to brace yourself for a very insightful and upsetting read. I went into this trying to do some research on what was going on with my son, only to learn a few things about what was going on with me, and also my father.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not bad, but...
...about half way through this book I started to realize it's more a collection of stories intended to give this disorder a context for readers, rather than concise descriptions of what the disorder is and how to treat it. That said I'm sure many men recognize themselves in the stories and thus hopefully get some help or help themselves somehow. Worth reading... ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent--Reread it Every Year!
This book will open your eyes and give you tools to figure out conversations you have every day!(I also highly recommend another of her books, _That's Not What I Meant!_ about cross cultural speaking, which includes a chapter about men and women as well.)
4-0 out of 5 stars Worth the read, but use caution
Tannen's book is well done and worth the read.However...it is also imbued with a subtle, and sometimes not-so-subtle, bias toward a perspective which presumes female modes of communication and other activities to be inherently superior to those of males.Of course, this is a patently false presumption. The examples of female communications/activities are almost uniformly praised and those of males are much more likely to be disparaged, either subtly or explicitly.
4-0 out of 5 stars Worthwhile for most people, men or women.
This is a very good book for anyone interested in gender differences, particularly with regard to peer expectations, communication habits and social instincts. The author touches upon a broad range of issues, but she also keeps the narrative flowing, using examples extensively. The end result is a book that is both educational and enjoyable.

5-0 out of 5 stars i wouldnt be where i am now without it
Like many other people who have posted their opinion of this book, I too have struggled for most of my life with Severe Depression, Severe Anxiety, and manic bipolar disorder- which led to a number of suicide attempts and constant ideation...Soon after finally recieving treatment, My therapist had recommended that i take a look at this book- at first i wasnt very motivated, but i decided that i dont HAVE TO do it in ten days- so i spread it out longer- doing one chapter a week and talking/discussing everything with my therapist. It was very helpful to have worked on it with someone who could help me understand everything and be able to help me look at MY situations and apply them to what i was working on. I cant even begin to tell you about what a difference this book has made im my life.
5-0 out of 5 stars Self esteem
Very Good and helpful book hoping it will keep me on the right track where I want to be.
5-0 out of 5 stars Very helpful adjunct cognitive therapy
This book was recommended to me when I went into a major depressive episode subsequent to job loss. I'm only part way through the book so far, but have found the exercises to be extremely helpful in understanding the negative thoughts that are contributing to my funky mood and seeing how distorted they are. The next part of the book deals with how to change these negative thoughts into more realistic ones. I'm looking forward to working through the rest of the exercises. ... Read more
