Editorial Review

"It seems that when normal life goes into eclipse, the differences in cultural patterns also fade away, and at the outer edges of behavior, deviant patterns are the same, the world over." This absorbing second book from the serial-killer expert who wrote Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Summations of Famous Cases
I learned a lot that I had not known about the Gacy and Dahmer cases. This book is well written with self-contained chapters on some of the worst cases of serial murder. If the author is self-aggrandizing I did not pick it up. He has justifiable reasons to be proud of his work. Many killers will kill no more because of his and others work. It must take an incredible amount of character and emotional strength to work these cases without going crazy or falling into a suicidal depression. My only criticism is that I am completely uninterested in any professional rivalry between Douglas, Ressler or any others. Both have done good work.1-0 out of 5 stars Not worth one second of your time...
I thought Whoever Fights Monsters was terrible.Amateurishly written, no depth in discussing the subject, and a self aggrandizing attitude on Mr. Ressler's part.I Have Lived In The Monster is all of that...times100! Worse yet, throughout this book Ressler came across to me as anapologist for these serial killers.A recurring theme is that it's nottheir fault that they are the way they are, someone made them that way, executing them would be wrong, we need to show them compassion, study them, and figure out how to make their minds right.Ressler's ego trip isfar more potent in this book.He aggrandizes himself in barely 200 pagesas opposed to his previous outing which took 300 or so.This waswritten in a very slipshod, sloppy way.I got the impression that maybehe'd just bought a house, boat, etc. and needed a quick influx of cash.Ihope it was worth it, because I have an even lower opinion of him thanbefore and I will not buy another one of his books.

2-0 out of 5 stars An author "bigger" than his subject
After reading this book I came to the conclusion that I prefer to read the books of Mr. Ressler's former collegues.I found his general attitude in writing this book to be if he did not profile the subject it was not donecorrectly. It is also apparent he has a recurring need to elevate himselfabove John Douglas which takes away from the subject in his book.Thisbook would have been a better read if it had not "starred" Mr.Ressler as opposed to the subject matter at hand. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A fascinating read
I've read this book from cover to cover and I guarantee you it is a fascinating (and at times almost unbelievable) read.I knew some of the studies covered but not in this detail. It's a great idea for a book. The more you find out about these stories the more you appreciate how amazing human behaviour is.I loved the story of railway worker Phineas Gage who had a 6ft metal pole blown through his head and lived to tell the tale travelling around carrying the pole for the rest of his life (he was even buried with it!) and the shocking story of David Reimer who due to botched surgery as a child had his penis cut off and was brought up as a girl before once again adopting a male role in his teens. Each chapter in the book deals with a different case study and they are all very interesting. The psychological importance and relevance of each case is also dealt with.I'd certainly recommend this book - you'll enjoy many of the stories and learn more about psychology and human behaviour in an entertaining way.
