5-0 out of 5 stars Psychological Profiling- It may after all be of help.
Crime Profiling originated in popualr writings of FBI Special Agents like Douglas and Ressler and caught the imagination of the world with Hollywood films like the 'Silence of the Lamb' and TV series like 'Profiliers', 'Cracker'. The last decade has seen acdemics attacking some of the fundamental postulates of the popular ideas on 'Offender Profiling". Today for each book advocating 'Offender Profiling' there is another book criticising 'Offender Profiling' and the battle lines were getting drawn with serious academics beginning to distance themselves from the Profiling Programme. As a practioner ( I work as a senior police officer in India) I was becoming cynical about salvaging anything from the initial promise of profiling as a helpful tool in investigating difficult crimes.

2-0 out of 5 stars True Witness: Cops, Courts, Science, and the Battle against Misidentification
Too much time spent on background of the players and their attempts to legitimize their theories. Were they just trying to make the book impressive by making it longer? I think there is enough current information out there to provide a much more interesting and informative read.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Exercise in Tuning Justice
Combining humor, history and the upheaval from DNA-proved wrongful convictions, Doyle stunningly recounts the long, bumpy process of fine-tuning justice in the American criminal system. While focused on the history and frailties of eye witness identification, this book is for anyone evenly remotely connected to ... or interested in ... the criminal justice system: psychologists, lawyers, law enforcement, pre & post conviction professionals, judges, criminologists, forensic specialists and, especially, university personnel and students of these fields.Laugh aloud when you read about Mr. Potato Head.Cringe with Jennifer Thompson as she realizes that her honest but mistaken testimony sent an innocent man to jail.Worry whether Texas executed an innocent man, a man whose last words were "they are murdering me..." This is great reading.Doyle unveils his subject with care, drawing on his uncanny ability to observe and participate simultaneously. As Doyle acknowledges in his final remarks, the science of justice does not stand still. But Doyle has made a massive contribution to describing the process, and capturing one of those rare moments when the science lurches forward. You will enjoy this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars New ammunition that improves accuracy by at least 50%!
Doyle's story might be the "body armor" for eye witness identification.Science has produced highly effective and reasonably accessible materials to keep you safer on the street.Yet it does no good when you leave it in the trunk of your cruiser.Science has done the same for eye witness identification yet many have yet to unpack it from its box.

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent resource!
dr. doren provides an excellent resource for the professional conducting civil commitment evaluations of sex offenders.he provides a fully sufficient review of relevant laws across the states that had civil commitment laws in 2002.he provides an excellent, detailed, methodical approach for the clinician conducting such evaluations.he discusses very practical implementation issues and how to avoid potential problems.when used with other sources, this is very helpful and i wish more evaluators might read and use this text before conducting such evaluations.i hope that he provides an update soon that includes discussion of all changes in state laws and, if the federal child protection act is passed, the effects of that legislation on federally-required state civil commitment laws and their implementation.he could discuss in greater detail some of the legal and programmatic implementation concerns.a revision might also include helpful web sites, literature, state resources, perhaps even documentation.this 4 year old edition, while not perfect, is outstanding and, i believe, worth every penny spent, new.

5-0 out of 5 stars Informative

4-0 out of 5 stars The final word
This book really should be the final word on the "debate" about whether, and the degree to which, traumatic memories can be repressed. The authors thoroughly and rigorously examine the scientific evidence showing that traumatic memories are indeed often forgotten. They also show, at great length, the many logical holes in the arguments of many of the proponents of the so-called "false memory" position. 5-0 out of 5 stars American Psychiatric Association Award Winning Book

5-0 out of 5 stars Mandatory Reading for Social Workers
Speaking as a child abuse defense attorney, life would be much easier if social workers would learn the mistakes they can make resulting in false disclosures of child abuse. My job would bemuch easier if the results of these interviews were more reliable. This book shows how and why social workers need to use proper interview techniques. It's a great book from a defense attorney's standpoint to cross-examine a social worker with, but if every state mandated this book as training for social workers in the first place, we would have fewer cases in the system, and more reliable evidence.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best book for current interview protocols
I wish I had read this book the first day it came out.Very good protocols.Very effective strategies.Speaking as a law enforcementinvestigator assigned to these cases almost exclusively, there is not abetter book I've found yet. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Criminal Psychology and Forensic Technology:A Collaborative Apporach to Effective Profiling.
This is a scholarly written book filled with details, mapping charts, andexcellent walk throughs of statistical analysis. This is a must read for anyone interested in the field of Forensic profiling. The writer also compiled an excellent reference section at the conclusion of each section of his writing. This book is well worth a reader's time.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not at the price
This book is NOT for the lay reader. You must have a grounding in statistical analysis to appreciate the research articles.Nonstatistical articles include a nice one on forensic archaelogy, three on ethics and two on cybercrime that essentially say there is a hacker subculture out there. The book has only one article with Godwin's four way classification scheme.A person who wants to learn that would be better off buying his other book (which I have not read). This book is a textbook and I've had much better textbooks. FYI Although I have taken many of the Justice and Paralegal courses at the University of Alaska, Anchorage, I have no background in law enforcement whatsoever. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars practical, helpful and entertaining!!!
an enjoyable, entertaining read.very useful content.brodsky cuts to the chase.he doesn't provide much detail regarding legal background, rules of evidence, criminal procedure, etc. in this book.he provides the essential information for the mental health professional to survive and be successful in direct and cross-examination.i believe it is worthwhile reading.for the alleviated fears, improved performance, and reduced potential embarrassing moments on the stand, it is certainly worth $13.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Expert Expert is Pignant
Ten years ago I read Dr. Brodsky's first expert book aqnd it was enjoyable and to the point. As a forensic psychologist having done many cases I find his new book The Expert Expert entertaining yet poignant when covering the issues and advice offered."The Paint by Numbers" metaphore is critical for the the practicing professional. This book will be a valuable and useful addition to the mental health practitioner's library

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must-Read...
...for anyone who is involved in legal proceedings, professionally or otherwise. Brodsky's latest installment, based on his obviously extensive experience and insights, is replete with useful info for both those who testify and those who solicit expert testimony. At the same time, it's marvelously well written and entertaining and hard to put down once you start reading it. Brodksy has clearly done it again, and let's hope there's a third installment in the works. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Interesting & refreshing book from a Civil War non-expert
With some 60,000 books on the Civil War, here is one that delves into a relatively untouched area.Although some of what R. Gregory Lande covers has been revealed by Thomas Lowry and touched on briefly by the likes of James McPherson and Earl J. Hess, none has put them all together.
5-0 out of 5 stars Refreshing
I purchased this book recently. It tells the history of the Civil War from a very unique perspective. I never knew that insanity had such a rich history during America's Civil War. The author writes very well, much like a novel, only this is a true story. You will enjoy reading this book!

2-0 out of 5 stars Malfeasance of Text
Dr. Lande has poorly researched the aspects of Civil War, preferring instead to demur to general logistics, rather than in-depth perusal of legitimate history. His writing resembles that of a high school report, with poorly constructed sentences, run-on phrases, choppy verbosity and a verbal cadence that approaches boredom. The true battlefield in the book is the one between the author and his lack of writing expertise.Read it with a grain of salt, and spare your wits for much better treatises on Civil War history. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars informative, though somewhat uneven
In this offering David Canter, one of the leading theorists in geographic profiling and how environmental psychology relates to crime, offers a detailed look at how space and time relate to criminal activity.
5-0 out of 5 stars Awe -Inspiring Insights for which Canter is renowned
Mapping Murder is a fascinating, inspiring read. Professor Canter is the world's foremost academic authority on psychological offender profiling so this was always going to be rather different from many other books in this area. 5-0 out of 5 stars One of the Better Titles
I found Canter's book to be very useful. This is decidedly the best popular book currently available on the topic of geographic profiling and as such I highly recommend it for students of forensic psychology. The book provides enough research to keep the professional interested, yet it is written clearly so that the student can appreciate it as well. I found this book to be both good reading and a good review of the literature on this topic, and the latter is something almost always lacking in popular books on profiling. Highly recommended. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Review from Choice Magazine
'Covering the history of forensic psychology up to the present, van Dorsten discusses everything from ethics and standards to courtroom application and tips for testifying. He looks at different types of psychological tests and at their application to forensic matters (versus in standard psychological evaluation). Specific detailed sections treat the use of forensic assessment in the areas of malingering, competency in criminal proceedings, court-ordered mental health treatment, child custody and child abuse cases, and sexual offenses. Also covered are forensic neuropsychology (i.e., evaluation of brain injuries) and forensic psychological evaluations in personal injury civil lawsuits. Excellent examples are used to clarify points. Summing up: Recommended. Collections supporting study of this specialized area of psychology; upper-division undergraduates and above.' J. A. Brown, Kaplan Choice Magazine May 2003 Vol. 40 No. 09

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent survey for both experienced clinicians or students
Though this collection of essays is primarily addressed to graduate students in psychology studying forensic mental health, it provides much sophistication in all the areas it covers. The articles are well written, and cover the field well. A very useful general reference of value to both students and experienced forensic mental health clinicians. ... Read more
