5-0 out of 5 stars every therapist needs this book
The primary author is well known as an instructor of "Family Law" for graduate students of psychology, social work, marriage & family therapy, etc. at several north Texas universities. His courses arealways well-received.A previous reviewer commented that a mental healthprofessional would have been helpful.I doubt that would make a differencesince so many professionals from various clinical disciplines use theseauthors as resources. This book is a great adjunct to remind yourself whatyou need to do as a professional to protect yourself & your clients. While you do not offer legal advice if you are not an attorney, being awareof these issues makes a counselor more likely to recommend that a clientsee an attorney for advice. Also, re-reading this book on a regular basisreminds us of what we need to continue to do to protect our professionallicenses.Often when we are in private practice, just as in other areas oflife, we sometimes get lax or forget to attend to all the details necessaryto protect us as professionals & our clients. This book is a must foryour professional library.

4-0 out of 5 stars Going into practice? Here's what you must know first.
I stumbled across this book while preparing a project as part of my undergrad Psychology studies at the University of Utah. What a lucky find this is! *** Many statements exist in the world of mental health practice regarding what standards of professionalism, ethicality, conduct, andconfidentiality a psychologist should adhere to. Many of them, I'vediscovered so far, are abstract: they state the standard but give little,if any, illustration on how a practicing therapist applies all that tohis/her job and life. This book is the first I've uncovered that gives theclear and understandable picture that I need as an aspiring psychologist.*** I think I understand well enough the general principle that motivatedthe authors to write this book: all too often, each of us has gotten burnedin the past because of some rule, some technicality, some law that wouldhave worked in our favor had we acted with a knowledge of it. For example,I know someone who wouldn't have paid a single cent of his medical billscaused by an on-the-job accident had he simply reported his injury within48 hours instead of waiting a week. Things like that. I'm always makingsure I do things like keep receipts, review credit card statements, andwatch what creeps into my college transcripts, because it's the littlethings that can screw our lives up so badly. All the more so fortherapists, the authors believe, because of their heavy responsibility tosafeguard their clients' welfare, and because unfortunately their trainingdoesn't seem to prepare them for some types of potential legal trouble. ***As part of that approach, this book takes an interesting departure fromother literature on mental health ethics. Despite what the title says, thecontents seem to focus not so much on protecting the client--although thatprinciple is by no means diminished--as it does on protecting thetherapist. That may seem selfish, but hey, you've got to learn this stuffsomehow! *** The authors do an excellent job of explaining a diversity ofissues in understandable ways. They use well-constructed scenarios thatmake you ask yourself, "what would I do if faced with thisdilemma?" Then they systematically explain what the options are, andwhat to avoid along the way. They show you several sample documents alongthe way that demonstrate how to remove any legal doubts from your practice. The objective is to prevent things from going wrong, but they also discusswhen things get ugly, such as a client who commits suicide and therelatives sue you, the therapist, for malpractice. Or when to breachconfidentiality and activate your "duty to warn" if a clientthreatens violence against someone else--or yourself. *** I noted that theauthors were both lawyers, and that only one was licensed as a mastersocial worker. I wish, despite their impressive knowledge and experience, that a psychologist might have collaborated with them on this work. Iwonder what sort of change in perspective it would have brought to havesomeone involved in this writing who was solely a practioner of mentalhealth, and not of law. *** Nevertheless, if you have a vested interest inpsychology, I think this is essential reading. If you are a practicingpsychologist, and you do not completely know these practical issues, youmay be an unwitting candidate for some serious trouble. If you are, likeme, someone who hopes one day to become a psychologist, this is anexcellent way to introduce and orient yourself to some very pertinentinformation--and get a firm and realistic picture of what it's really goingto be like for you. Best you pay attention. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Read!
Great intro to stalking behavior and the signs, symptoms, and preventive measures one can take. I found this book informative, well-researched, and insightful. Certainly, a good resource for anyone interested in stalking, domestic violence, or general offender behavior.

5-0 out of 5 stars great book
great book.good look from a psychological standpoint.Very imformative. He ties together information on threats, stalking and assassination.

2-0 out of 5 stars This book does not treat cases of multiple stalkers,....
I am a licensed psychotherapist with a personal and professional interest in 'multiple stalking' cases, in which a perpetrator organizes other individuals, likely strangers to the victim, to stalk and harass a feared or hated target individual, often over the internet. Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Adequate but lacking
I purchased this book for an undergraduate psych course, "Psychology & the Law". As I have a BA in psychology, I've read quite a few psychology textbooks in the past few years, and this might possibly be the worst of the bunch.3-0 out of 5 stars Good for students, but lacking in some vital areas
I bought this book for a course entitled Psychology and the Law, which I am taking as an elective course, and not as part of my areas of concentration. Although I am a Sociology and Women's Studies major, you don't need to be a feminist (or even a sociologist for that matter), to see where this book is lacking vital information on the criminal justice system, and on rehabilitation techniques used in North America.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An Accessible Treasure
In "Minds on Trial," the authors, Charles Patrick Eqing and Joseph McCann select 20 cases from roughly the past 50 years in which there is a fascinating intersection between law and psychology. The work initially looks like a book the casual reader may have some difficulty getting through. Such is not the case as each of the 20 cases are broken down into manageable chapters and are written in such a way so as to engage even the casual reader.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent overview of a difficult and very relevant subject
There are other books of interest on forensic and psychology of the law, but I was most impressed with this newly published text.If I were teaching this subject, I would assign this book for the class.I was particularly interested in the chapter on interviewing techniques, although, I think the authors missed an opportunity to integrate the techniques utilized by Alfred Kadushin (see, The Social Work Interview).

5-0 out of 5 stars An enjoyable read
I stumbled across this book while doing research for my graduate degree.I must say that besides presenting the information in a very clean and clear fashion, the author also has a killer sense of humour.I have read hundreds of academic books during my undergraduate and now graduate degree work and I have never laughed while reading an introduction to a textbook before (Dr. Girod fills it with some good jokes and stories and how they relate to the criminology theories).

3-0 out of 5 stars Biased Reviews
I think it unfortunate that a relative and a former student provide two glowing, 5 star reviews of this work.Buyer beware.

5-0 out of 5 stars "Total Justice": The Key to Unlocking Jurors' Minds
At the beginning of this review, I need to disclose my bias: I have knownNeal Feigenson for nearly 15 years: He was on the faculty at the law schoolwhich I attended, and I consider him a friend, as well as a mentor ofsorts.Although I candidly concede, therefore, that I cannot be entirelyobjective about anything written by Professor Feigenson, I am confidentthat, by any standard, this is a marvelously intelligent and incisive bookat the intersection of law and social psychology.5-0 out of 5 stars Everyone Should Read This!
Legal Blame is the best book I've ever read about how juries think. The author explains in simple, clear language the psychology of how and why jurors blame someone for an accident, and shows how that psychology isreflected in the words that lawyers use when they try to persuade juries aswell as in the jurors' own words. The book makes it possible to get insidethe jurors' heads as they decide these cases, and that makes it easier tounderstand why the jurors decided as they did, whether you agree with theirdecisions or not.The background chapters on the tort law system and thecognitive psychology, especially the psychology of emotions, were extremelyclear (I'm not a lawyer or a psychologist, and I felt I understood all ofit) and helpful.I feel that from now on I'll be a much more educatedconsumer of television and newspaper coverage of jury trials and the legalsystem. ...
