2-0 out of 5 stars Been there done that
It started off okay.Heroine never did that.I couldn't wait to see what else she was going to try.Much to my dismay I had done most everything she described.I am only 27 years old.I feel so bad for her if the experiences she talks about are really major tests or adventures.I can tell you that she really wasn't taking any chances here.I thought maybe there would be more experimental behaviors rather than tested and true life experiences that most of us have.Don't buy it and don't read it.And for goodness sakes if you liked this book please get out of that chair and experience life!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars An inspired taste of things I'd rather not eat
In spirited, refreshing prose, this book allowed me to venture into and vicariously experience much of the current bodily culture scene. In places, Jenkins' astute sensitivity is touching and disturbing.I closedthe last page bigger in awareness than when I opened the first.

4-0 out of 5 stars A good introduction, but can be deeper and better
As an underdog I read a lot of books on fear and on the body/mind connection respectively. This should be the first book I came across which devotes on both, and in particular how correct gestures/postures can help alleviate fear, especially those acquired during early lives. In this respect, the objective set per book title "What are you afraid of? A body/mind guide to courageous living" had been largely achieved, primarily by the first half of it. Sorry to say that the second half of it had been a little bit over stretched with theories. It would be better if the author can give more of the Feldenkrais Method and/or Yoga in fighting against fear/stress. Taking into consideration of the author's background (she's neither an M.D. nor a psychologist) I must express my heartfelt appreciation of her calibre of writing a book of such high quality. In short, recommended!
5-0 out of 5 stars Great intro to Feldenkrais
I've only experienced a couple of the exercises in this book and am so glad I got it.This book is great.I was afraid to excersise after a car accident because simple movements hurt.I was deathly afraid of physical therapists and thier torture machines.Thankfully someone recommended Feldenkrais and someone else reccommended this book in particular.I was afraid my life was over but not anymore. One of the excerises in this book is from Anat Baniels joint pain series so I bought Anat Baniels neck pain exercises.Even though I never thought about what I was afraid, I had a lot of fears and still do.I have a lot less now.Lavinia Plonka thank you!Great book! Let your life begin!reviews over!!!!!but on side note, why not get an extra copy and carry it with you, it's compact enough, when you see someone with a no fear t-shirt or big sticker on thier vehicle, give them a copy. They may not look like they need it, but it could be best book they ever owned.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Book For Our Times
Lavinia Plonka's book What Are You Afraid of? is certainly a book for our times. It seems that fear is everywhere, in our political, social, and private lives. I found this book enormously insightful. The author is direct and honest in her approach to acknowledging fear and gaining mastery over it. What I particularly found helpful was the focus on ACTION - do this and help is on the way. Ms. Plonka's extensive background in the Feldenkrais Method and her years as a performer lend credence to the exercises she offers here. The illustrations were a delightful bonus. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good defence of representationalism
This book is a good, but not introductory defence of representationalism. Tye is one of the big upholders of this view in the philosophy of mind, among others like Dretske and Shoemaker. Seager wrote a good introduction to representationalism (theories of consicousness). This book has three parts. The first deals with the explanatory gap and the knowledge argument. Tye considers an objection to the knowledge argument but finds it inadequate, so he proposes that colorblind mary lacks certain phenomenal concepts, and that therefore naturalism rests untouched. I think the knowledge argument, although still vey popular, is open to many objections, and this one is as good as many others. Tye then dismisses explanatory gap fears as cognitive illusions, and here I also agree, although I am more inclined to David Panpineaus thoughts on the matter.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A modern classic even in its reprint edition over fifty years later
Hadley Cantril was chairman of the Institute for international Social Research: his Invasion From Mars: A Study In The Psychology Of Panic originally appeared in 1940 but remains a modern classic even in its reprint edition over fifty years later. The focus on the lasting effects of Orson Welles' radio adaptation of the fantasy War of the Worlds explores how radio could have such an effect - and how people judged the accuracy of what they were hearing on the radio.
4-0 out of 5 stars A Psychological take on the great Hallowe'en "Boo" of 1938
On October 30, 1938, Orson Welles and his Mercury Theater on the Air dramatized H.G. Wells' science fiction fantasy "War of the Worlds."The dramatization was written as a series of news broadcasts and was realistic enough that at least a million Americans believed it was real and thousands were panic-stricken."The Invasion From Mars" was first published in 1940 and took advantage of this infamous episode of American popular culture as a rare opportunity for the social scientist to study mass behavior.Cantril's goal was to provide "insight into the psychology fo the common man and, more especially, the psychology of the man of our times."We must remember that in the fall of 1938 Hitler had already plunged Europe into war and Americans, recalling how they had fought the war to end all wars just a generation earlier, must have been nervous about what was to come.Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars More about studying intelligence than animals
This book wasnt quite what I expected. One basic theme of the book, we can all agree on: that there are many problems and hurdles to jump over before we can clearly define intelligence. She believes that misconceptions about a chain of intelligence (that is: the order of insects, fishes, birds, dog, monkey leading up to humans)caused by the media and our own arrogance have inhibited the study of intelligence. When comparing different kinds of intelligence and which animals excel, she proves her point quite clearly. For example is a certain kind of spider (Portia) smarter than Fido??

4-0 out of 5 stars A"Great Read" for a scientific overview
I purchased Ms. Yoerg's book in San Diego (her hometown). Little did I know that I bought a signed copy!I felt the book was very interesting, and written with great wit. Ms. Yoerg knows her stuff, and has done extensive research in her field. I found her animal/insect comparisions informative, and quite funny (you'll know what I mean when you read about Portia, the spider). I am currently an undergraduate, and will be using her book for some of my research. I would highly recommend this book for anyone who wants a good overview of animal behavior and intelligence. ... Editorial Review

"I began this book with a pretty firm prejudice," says Robert Ornstein of his survey of the two halves of the human brain. "I believed that after two decades of research we'd find ... that there might be little to distinguish the two sides." Instead, he concluded that "the division of the mind is profound," with deep roots in evolution, embryonic development, and society. It is profound, but not simplistic: Ornstein shows how the right hemisphere is neither a chimpanzeelike moron nor a mystical genius. It provides the context, the big picture, while the left hemisphere keeps track of the details. Doris Lessing says, "I have alwaysadmired Robert Ornstein's ability to explain difficult scientific ideas to ordinary people"; Paul Ehrlich calls Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars the right mind is the right book to read on the subject
This book is not simply a sterile collection of ideas about the right and left hemispheres of the brain. It is a superbly-paced, well thought out text, one that leads the reader not only to an understanding of how the halves of the brain may work, but to an idea of how the skills possessedwithin these parts of the brain might work together to produce the 'right'mind for a given situation.I loved the last sentence of this book-it putsit all together in a way that is just right.I strongly recommend thisbook to anyone who is interested in the subject.

2-0 out of 5 stars Brain for beginners
Readers with previous experience with Ornstein's books may find The Right Mind the most interesting he's written. The view of brain through psychology offers a different approach about brain functions. For Beginners, this book may be quite useful. Though I read other book fromOrnestein, I was expecting to find deep research on brain assymetry, whichthis book is poor, there's nothing you can't find over Internet on relatedsites. For intermeddiate readers on brain issue, this book may offer someinteresting approaches, but too hard to get them between 200 pages.Instead, I would reccomend Carl Sagan's "Dragons of Eden", amarvelous and interesting book about brain development. Advanced readerswon't like Ornstein for explaing brain lateralization, and a moreappropriate book would be "Left brain, Right Brain", the onlyserious book written on this subject. Conclusion: Ornstein book is not thatbad at all. If you like Oliver Sacks and psychological views of brain, thisis indeed a good choice. Wrong Title though, coz it doesn't have much aboutbrain lateralization itself (by the way, the book enphasizes the importanceof both hemispheres working together - which is quite obvious when you wanta scientific approach - but many people forget on daily life).

4-0 out of 5 stars A good book for Classes on Human Learning
I have adopted this text for a class on Human Learning and have found it to be an easily read and useful text.Morgan covers the essentials of "typical" learning modalities...classical, operant and social, and also moves on to address some cognitive issues, which is nice for us teachers who don't necessarily adopt Behaviorist philosophies. The book is written to be easily readable by most college students, though like all texts on learning there is an overemphasis on animal studies which get a bit dry and also are of questionable utility. The text could also benefit from a tad more skepticism regarding the utility of some behavioral technique, particularly given some of the controversies surrounding behavioral therapies for autism (i.e. Lovaas) and other disorders.Nonetheless this book makes for a very helpful text. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars For philosophical and educational studies collections
Wholeness: On Education, Buckminster Fuller, and Tao is a treatise divided into three main chapters; as its subtitle suggests, the chapters focus upon Education, Buckminster Fuller, and the Tao. Unifying the theme of this scholarly, superbly crafted presentation is the concept of wholeness and how it applies to life in a world where so many are often blind to the whole picture that encompasses the countless different threads that make up the tapestry of global events. Six appendixes offer further selected readings and more thought on the interdependence of world problems. Highly recommended for philosophical and educational studies collections and reading lists, Wholeness is a scholarly, vital look at the unifying factors connecting diverse global problems today.
