Great overview of a fascinating topic
For anybody interested in how gender and emotion interact with each other, this volume is a treasure trove of information. Some of the chapters are a bit weaker and consist of a lot of descriptive data with few explanations or theories, but a lot of that can be attributed to the relative lack of research on this topic. Gender has taken a long time to evolve its own theories and I think it will take quite a bit longer before we see the first overarching gender and emotion theory which might help place this array of fascinating but scattered findings into a single unifiying framework. But for anyone who does or is thinking about doing research on either gender or emotion will find this volume to be a wonderful overview. ... Read more

Helpful on the journey...
Present Moment Awareness is surprisingly simple. What I like most about this book is the practicality and usability factor.
It's just okay
I chose this book because "Awareness" is in the title.Although I wasn't expecting a lot of nuggets, I did expect some.Unfortunately, none were to be found.Instead, this book reads like a session with a psychologist - and not a very good one at that.The author begins by writing, "If you have picked up this book, then odds are that in someway you feel dissatisfied with your life."Again, that is not why I chose this book.Warning - this is the theme of the book.The author's own words sometimes weigh down the pages with emotional dissatisfaction.

Clear and comprehensive
I've read more than my fair share of research methods books and this has to be one of the best. The book is a joy to read. Pittenger's writing style is easy to follow even when he enters the turbulent areas of more complicated subject matters. What I particularly enjoy are the examples that Pittenger uses to illustrate various concepts. All the examples are "practical" in that they represent topics that are generally interesting to read. Pittenger also links the topics of statistics and research methods in seamlessly. Anyone wanting to learn the links between a hypothesis, research design, and statistical analysis will greatly benefit from reading this text. ... Read more

Pul-eeze How narcisstic can you get?
I have to admit, this book does have a good premise and some good practical exercises - INTERESTING CONCEPTS BUT NOT FOR EVERYONE!
Much of what the author is saying in this book looks good on paper; however, many suggestions are simply not practical for anyone in a low-income bracket.How many individuals could afford to have a year's wages set aside in the event they lose (or quit) their job?If you are a professional with considerable investments and savings, that may be possible, but for one who lives from paycheque to paycheque and just barely scrapes by, that idea is a dream not a realistic possibility. Realistic, practical, and hopeful.
As a psychotherapist and author who teaches the importance of facing fear head on (Embracing Fear, HarperSanFrancisco) I am always glad to see a book like Chapters that offers a realistic perspective, useful guidance and a hopeful message. Uncertainty is indeed the very nature of life, and Ms. Carpenter's well-written and organized book is based on the premise that coming to terms with that uncertainty (accepting that we cannot change this fact) is the key to feeling secure.
