4-0 out of 5 stars An excellent addition to the Freud literature
Cioffi's cricisms of Freud, freudian theory, and freudians is trenchant and exhaustive. It is, however, tough reading. He tends to be wordy and his sentence structure needlessly convoluted. It takes multipile readings toreally understand what he is talking about, and it helps to have somebackground in philosophy, or at least in the revisionist Freud issues. Thatsaid, the book is a real contribution, with a new essay and several classicarticles that are hard to get elsewhere. I highly recommend it. FrederickCrews once said that those still enamoured with freudian thought should besentenced to a year's hard reading. This book would be an excellent part ofthat year's study. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful reference - college through graduate school
This review applies to the 6th edition, which I bought as required reading for my undergraduate Physiological Psychology course. Now, in graduate school, I often refer to this text. The CD-ROM that came with the book has been invaluable as a "refresher" in basic neuroanatomy. The book is written in an easy-to-understand manner.I give it four stars instead of five only because I wish that the authors went into more detail about certain key topics, such as neurotransmitters and brain structures.

5-0 out of 5 stars AN INTENSE BOOK FOR ANYONE INTERESTED IN THE BRAIN
Being forced to read a textbook at school is one thing, but being asked to read about the brain and its cognitive functions is other. For any one fascinated with the brain, this physiological rollercoaster into the mind is very intense and very in depth. ( At times it may be hard to follow because of the amount of concentration needed to go along with its terminologies). Not recommended as a reference book. It is definately more of a textbook for any medical-school-oriented individual>>>

5-0 out of 5 stars Very useful
I am an undergraduate neuroscience major at Univeristy of Massachustts, Amherst, and I had the author of this book , Dr Neil Carlson, as my professor for both the undergrad and grad level of this course. I am now a TA for the course, so I know the book pretty well. It is written in exactly the same style as he lectures. This probably because the book was originally developed from notes he used to hand out, which you can tell when reading the book. He has little personal comments inserted in paragraphs; he writes in the first person; he has strange analogies; he sometimes jumps from subject to subject; but overall, the book is quite good. The best things about the book are the diagrams and the cd. They very clearly illustrate exactly what he's discussing, and make the subject at hand easier for students to understand. As for the breadth of the material covered, it seems to be quite wide. He starts off with the basics, like neuron structure and brain anatomy, but then quickly moves on from there to sleep mechanisms, eating behavior, learning and memory, etc. The concentration of the book is on the effects of hormones on the brain and our behaviors resulting from those effects. I would recommend taking some introductory biology courses before trying to tackle the book; my psych major friend who hasn't had a tougher time with the class. Overall though, the book is not that hard to understand. I've learned a lot from it and not been bored while doing it. It's one of the most popular textbooks for the physiology of behavior out there. My book is dogearred from so much use, and though I have used it for 3 semesters, I still feel like I can glean more information from it! ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Oh, really?
Sure appears to be a pile 'o crap to me. But I like sci-fi and the X-Files, so the book has some entertainment value, anyway. But really...remote viewing in the new century? Don't make me laugh. I suppose aliens teach eligible viewers how to do it...

4-0 out of 5 stars Scientifically factual. Not at all a huge pile of crap.
This book, which is filled to the brim with scientific facts and theory, helped me a great deal. I can now hang out and stare in the Victoria's Secret dressing rooms without leaving my stuffy, grime-encrusted apartment. I can also see through Bill Gates' eyes and have stolen all the code to Longhorn and sold it to Steve Jobs for $600. So this fine scientific tome made me a profit! Money well spent. Thanks,Mr. Rifat!

1-0 out of 5 stars argh.
Fortunately, this book was a gift and so I didn't waste any money on it, but I found it an amusing romp through a bunch of flimsy psuedo-science. Some people have no shame, really. The concept of auras has been so thoroughly debunked that it's unbelievable that this book could be published in the 21st century. If you like non-fiction, as I do, I would recommend you avoid this book and instead read about the "magical" Northern Lights, the unbelievable migration of birds, the incredible social complexity of insects, the heavenly surprises discovered by science, or the mind-expanding beauty of the Grand Canyon. Otherwise, you might as well just read fiction.
4-0 out of 5 stars Auras, Energy Medicine and Science
In writing this short review, I will rely to a great degree on the opinions of other scholars in the field and from time to time interject my own feelings and comments as they relate to my own personal `adventures' in Energy Medicine. Energy Medicine is extremely diverse and affects the lives of countless individuals throughout the United States.
5-0 out of 5 stars Mapping the Human Aura
Contributing author Julia Melges Jablonski writes in CAPTURING THE AURA, "Traditional science typically stands at the edge of the known world and tries to move into new territory using 'maps' of the already-conquered territory as guides. This scientific approach tends to blind them to the potential scope of the vast unknown territory ahead.Non-traditional researchers, inventors, and thinkers, on the other hand, tend to use a 'plane' to fly into the wilderness and then work their way back, and in the process, they create the maps for the less daring to follow after them."Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Ever fell in love with a textbook?
I sure as heck never had before. I am dyslexic, math phobic, and a graduate student in Psych who must take 1 full year of advanced stat. Terrifed of this prospect, I bought this book. It is, without doubt, the best text book, ever. It is funny (to the point of being downright cheeky), laid out exceedingly well, progresses from one idea to another naturally, and explains all these confusing concepts easily. I actually looked forward to reading it in my spare time, and I promise you, I am not a math geek! There simply is not a better Intro to Statistics book out there. Better than cartoon guide, stats for dummies, etc. Save your money and time and go right to the source.

5-0 out of 5 stars Behavioral Statistics in Action
In my field I must read many research studies dealing with various topics.I've taken research classes and have learned to recognize key statistical concepts but I must admit that I've never fully understood how they work, what they really mean (no pun intended) or how they were derived.Don'tget me wrong.I've studied, but most texts were just too advanced rightfrom the start. Now that I've read and worked through the sample questionsin this text I finally feel ready to tackle more advanced texts.Thelanguage used is clear and concise with clearly presented examples andapplications of concepts. The sequencing is well thought out and quiteseamless.I highly recommend it for anyone just starting research classeswho has had little or nopreparation in statistics. However, knowledge ofbasic algebra is a must.If you haven't had algebra for some time, you maywant to brush up a bit. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Humane, wise, and applicable advice. A life-changing book!
I found this book on Amazon while looking for help with my love relationship. For having bought it, my thoughts regarding relationships are dramatically changed!
5-0 out of 5 stars How to broaden one's own awareness and connections
Love Is Not A Game (But You Should Know The Odds) is a relationship self-help book dedicated to aiding the reader in the search for a quality, loving, and long lasting romantic relationship. Using its "love dice" methodology to quanitfy the twin crucial traits of chemistry and emotional maturity in both members of the couple, Love Is Not A Game outlays basic strategies for keeping one's sex life intoxicating, resolving differences of opinion and disagreements, learning how to broaden one's own awareness and connections, and much more. Filled with anecdotes of a wide variety of couples, and also distinguished by a controversial aside on the possible benefits of legalized professional sex as a sexual outlet that does not involve oneself in a relationship with the wrong person, Love Is Not A Game is filled with very practical insights on the human condition that hold universal value regardless as well as a nuts-and-bolts methodology of assigning scores to personalities.

4-0 out of 5 stars Love and spirituality
We are a married couple, but we like to read and do things to continually improve our marriage. This book is probably mostly for single people, but we also found it interesting and helpful for us.We especially liked the chapter on sprituality where it discussed the "spiritually advanced person" and the three primary personality types that are not spiritually advanced. We also liked the chapter on sexual fantasies - it has helped open our eyes to new ways of exploring our feelings and desires.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Not fade away
One of the stressors of my life, and I suspect of many other people's lives is the nagging feeling that somehow we are approaching love wrongly. On the one hand, we want to experience it and we want to believe that the experience is real. On the other hand, our own experience and the experience of others around us inclines us to feel as though it is a little bit foolish past the age of 16 to believe *too* much in the idea of enduring passion.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Good Read!
Only a brave pair of authors would try to tackle a topic as all-encompassing as the need for courage in the modern business world, but that is exactly what Drs. Merom Klein and Rod Napier have set out to do. Do they succeed? Not entirely. While their diagnosis of the organizational ills plaguing today's companies is spot-on, their prescriptions are generic, involving "creating a safe environment," "building pride" and "keeping it fun." Despite the obviousness of some of the sound advice in the later chapters, the book shines in its first 70 pages, in which the doctors present an original, enlightening analysis of how organizational changes have altered the roles and responsibilities of mid-level workers. Based on this fresh perspective, we think that all readers could use a little Courage.

5-0 out of 5 stars Highly recommended by Stern's Management Review
The thrust of this book is to help facilitate organizational change through finding more courage both within yourself and inspiring it in others. The author's aim is to help the reader find 1) more candor to deal with the truth, 2) a greater sense of purpose, 3) a more optimistic will, 4) more disciplined rigor, and 5) a greater inclination to trust and risk. These are five quintessential dimensions of courage that bring people to cross an action threshold and persevere. Each of these factors is explored in separate chapters; specific how-to guidelines are presented and summarized. The book vividly deals with the emotions underlying the will to act; it is insightful and invigorating. We highly recommend it. ... Read more

It is a long-held notion of evolutionary theory that every aspect of behavior has an adaptive purpose, making the organism that exhibits it more fit for survival. That view hits a wall when it is brought to bear on dreaming, an act that seems to have no discernible adaptive advantage.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Focus on the physiological
"Dreaming Souls" clearly lays out an anti-Freudian way of viewing dream content.Flanagan's focus on dreams as "free-riders" that coincidentally join us each night when we sleep is a fascinating way to interpret the latest in sleep science.
4-0 out of 5 stars a seminal work on dreams i would give it a 4.5 if i could
owen flanagan does it once again in a great naturalistic work that sketches a controversial but logical theory in a controversial field. With experience in the philosophic, neuroscientific, and psychological fields owen is more than capable of proving his theory that dreams are not spandrels of sleep, they are fitness enhancing and although a biproduct of evolution are self expressive. He tackles all the neccessary and interesting questions from all his fields and creates an overal complex but clear and illuminating work that is a extreme pleasure to read

3-0 out of 5 stars Interesting new information about the subject.
I really had mixed feelings about Owen Flanagan's book Dreaming Souls.Certainly anyone who expected the operant word to be "Souls" would definitely be disappointed. The focus of the book, as the subtitle "Sleep, Dreams, and the Evolution of the Conscious Mind" suggests, is the evolutionary function of sleep and dreams. In general he seems to feel that sleep and its stages probably has a vital evolutionary purpose, but dreaming is simply an emergent property, or spandrel--a Gouldism--that humans have put to various purposes throughout history and across cultures.I could certainly agree with that possibility.Read more
