5-0 out of 5 stars Great for Excelsior's Research Methods in Psych test....
Although I never ended up taking the test myself, several people advised me to buy this book, which in fact is the recommended textbook listed on the content outline for the ECE Research Methods test. After skimming though it, it appears to cover what is on the test (according to the outline). But get a used copy, unless you want to pay $100+ for a new one.

4-0 out of 5 stars This book is great!!!
I would highly recommend this book to anyone who would like to learn more about experimenting in Psychology.Myers and Hansen clearly explain confusing terms and use examples from daily life (when applicable). It is well worth the investment for Psychology majors and can also be enjoyed if you've never had a Psychology course before. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars An excellent source of reference on Psychophsysics.
A great book that is widely referenced, it provides a solid introduction to classical psychophysics and discusses, indepth, the newer Theory of Signal Detection (TSD).4-0 out of 5 stars The only complete and modern introduction to psychophysics
Gescheider has in the third edition of his book "Psychophysics: The Fundamentals" accomplished an introduction to psychophysics that is both complete and modern. 5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastically clear and engaging.
One of the problems with the study of mental phenomenon is that everyone thinks they are, or can become, an expert.Nowhere is this deeply inaccurate intuition more prominently displayed than in the study of animal minds.Over the last 30 or so years, however, a group of scientists have begun to chisel away at this problem using carefully articulated theories, clever experiments, and the good will of animals in the wild and in captivity. The architect for many of the relevant theories, and a large number of the clever experiments, is David Premack. Now, in this exceptionally profound book, Premack not only walks the reader through his mind, showcasing how carefully reasoned arguments can be converted into simple experiments, but unleashes a wealth of new ideas that should keep the field going for a long time to come. But if you think this is only for the academic crowd, think again.Beautifully written in collaboration with his wife Ann, this book should be mandatory reading for all those who have pets, or who work in zoos, and wish to gain new insights into what animals think and feel. The study of animal cognition is not like astrophysics. You don't need the math and you don't need the high tech, zillion dollar equipment. You need the right theories, some simple experiments that can be done with equipment from your local [store] or pet store, and good eyes to watch and document what the animals does.In Original Intelligence, the Premacks have provided all the ingredients. Bon appetite!

5-0 out of 5 stars Brilliant, bold, and beautifully written
This book is a gem. The science is pure unadulterated Premack. Creative beyond our times. In contrast to many of the touchy-feely books about animals that are based largely on intuition, unconstrained by the lack of theory, Original Intelligence is precisely the opposite. Armed witih the tools of a cognitive scientist, and the clarity of a philospher of mind, Premack approaches the minds of animals in the most sophisticated fashion. There are so many new ideas in this book that both students of animals science, as well as pet owners and animal lovers, will have years and years of things to think about and test. 5-0 out of 5 stars Original Intelligence -- An excellent look into other minds
Original Intelligence is a tremendously valuable book for readers who want to understand the nature of human infants and other minds, extending even to chimpanzees and beyond. It may well be regarded as a classic book in psychology for years to come. Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Empowering.... to a certain extent
I read a lot of "woman-centric" books, and, while this is certainly a worthy project as well as a generally interesting book, it doesn't quite measure up to essay collections such as The Bitch in the House or Old Wives' Tales.(I would like to be able to give it three and a half stars, but rounded it up to four.)The authors of these essays are extremely diverse racially, ethnically and in their backgrounds and lifestyles. For this reason alone, it is an important read, because it provides valuable cultural insight into the "beauty myths" surrounding demographics other than middle-class white women.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book!
I have never been really into Women's Studies, but I recently saw this book and was intrigued.Like almost every woman on earth, I struggle with my feelings about my body. It's just so great to know that I'm not alone. It's inspiring to read about women who've made peace or made progress with their body images. This book definitely made me more aware of images of beauty that society considers normal.I realized that I've spent my whole life swallowing what the media tells me to and letting that formmy self image. The contributors to this book are very diverse but are united as well. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Powerful and Easy
I really like what Carlson has to say. Very refreshing. Some of his ideas, while not all new, are very powerful. Takes the focus away from introspection and the past, and makes life both more practical and easier as well as more enjoya.
5-0 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Book!
This book dispels the confusion that has wrecked too many lives. It offers five key principles all readers should embrace in understanding the wonders of life.
4-0 out of 5 stars Good advice, but...
I have to agree with all of the reviewers below: This book has some valuable insights. And because I am not unfamiliar with the concepts (see my review of "Napkin Notes on the Art of Living") I was interested to read a different presentation of similar material.Yes, we control our thoughts, our thoughts affect our moods, and feelings are a good indicator of when our thought process has derailed -- ie we're not living in the moment. And with a lot of patience and practice, we can navigate even the hardest things in life with more grace. But there were times while reading that my little voice said "This guy is making it sound way too easy...OR he's way too happy..."He insists that ignoring your low moods or negative feelings isn't "denial" but "deferral" of dealing with those feelings until you're in a better frame of mind, but often we aren't given that luxury.I worked really hard to maintain respect when, in two or three lines, he described how he was able to cope when a dear friend died in a car crash on the way to standing up to his wedding. Was it really as easy as he makes it sound?Human beings are complex, and often overwhelmed by feelings. So while this is good advice for many of life's ups and downs, I suspect the more complicated scenarios will require a bit more. ... Editorial Review

As you read this, at some level you're aware that you're reading, thanks to a standard human feature commonly referred to as consciousness. What is it--a spiritual phenomenon, an evolutionary tool, a neurological side effect? The best scientists love to tackle big, meaningful questions like this, and neuroscientist Antonio Damasio jumps right in with Read more

Reviews (44)

5-0 out of 5 stars Neurobiology of consciousness
According to Damasio any convincing account of consciousness must address two, inter-related problems: (1) the problem of how the brain is able to generate images of objects - how the `movie-in-the-brain' is concocted and (2) how the brain simultaneously represents a sense of self in the act of knowing those images. The latter problem has to do with the inherently subjective quality of consciousness, one of its essential attributes. It is unfortunate that this second problem is often overlooked - the old `Cartesian theatre' concept is woefully out-dated.
5-0 out of 5 stars Thought provoking, but controversial....
I liked this book very much and found it to be quite thought provoking. While it can be criticized on various grounds including being difficult to follow, having redundancies and containing a lot of speculation, it still provides good theoretical concepts that are plausible and worth considering.
2-0 out of 5 stars Almost Entirely Speculation of the Worst Kind
I cannot recall when I have ever encountered so many "hypotheses," "supposes," "suggests," "probably" "calls to mind," etc. in such a short amount of space. More suppositions exist than theories, and those suppositions are based on highly dubious inferences. Damasio has obviously thought long and hard about his dysfunctional patients, and the fact that he wants to ground consciousness and emotions in neurobiology (as opposed to computers) gave me optimism and a tinge of excitement. Unfortunately, obfuscation prevailed.

5-0 out of 5 stars It works if you work It.
Ellis is in a select class of thinker. I always get something positive out of all of his books. There are a lot of feel good books out there and I have read many of them. You feel good when you read them, like church revival meetings, but there are no tools for lasting changes. Raw, raw, raw your great, think big, the sky's the limit and on and on. Leave the cash and good luck is what you get from that stuff. Snake oil at its best.

5-0 out of 5 stars Pay the pocket change and buy this book!
I have recently been studying a lot of academic research related to this book's central theme (i.e., that people tend use one of a handful of relatively standard ways to think, learn, process information, etc). This book is probably the easiest to understand and the most practical of all the books on the subject.Big name academics like Jerome Bruner and other people involved in educational theory back up this book's claims and provide a better academic foundation for those who want to know.In the educational world, it is commonly taught that children fall into four catagories, called "ones", "twos", "threes", and "fours".These catagries are virtually the same as this book, except that Harrison and Bramson have subdivided the "threes" categries into two categories that they call "realists" and "pragmatists".I personally believe that there is little dispute that these catagories (be they four or five or six in number) do actually exist and do actually have a profound affect on the way human beings interact. As an undergraduate business management major, with a graduate education degree, I feel that this book (and books like it) should be required reading for all teachers and people involved in any sort of organization -- particularly the managers of people.
4-0 out of 5 stars To Agree or Not to Agree
Generally, I agree with the high ratings that other reviewers have given to this book. After I obtained my bachelor's degree in philosophy, I took the end-of-the-book test. My thinking style at that time was primarily an idealist. But after I earned my master's degree in American Studies and took the test again, I was primarily an analyst. Both these test results made sense to me given that my two degrees were separated by six years. This is one of the "hidden" values of the book: that one's "Styles of Thinking" (the original hardcover and, in my opinion, the better title for the book) may change over a period of years.5-0 out of 5 stars artful thinking
