5-0 out of 5 stars Very readable, clearly written, good examples
While rather simple for some of the more advanced counseling students in my pastoral counseling class, this book proved to be an excellent primer in basic helping skills. It was a good review for me as well (I have over 20 years experience in rehab counseling).

5-0 out of 5 stars Solid writing, easy to read, and informative
I first used this book in my graduate program in a class for communication and leadership. This skills taught in this book are outstanding. Now, I plan to use the ideas from this book in my own career, as well as helping an undergraduate peer staff at a university learn the basic helping guidelines. This book is highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fabulous guide for research and practice.
We just completed a doctoral level seminar by using this book to guide process research. It's fabulous. While the book is certainly appropriate for teaching basic counseling/helping skills at the upper undergraduate and graduate levels, I also believe it has applicability for advanced practicum and research. Good work! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely a Fascinating Read - a review of "Self-theories"
This is a fascinating book. And while I'm just a mom with no particular background in psychological research, I found I had no difficulty either understanding the procedures of the research, or finding `everyday' applications for the profound information that Carol Dweck and associates provide.
5-0 out of 5 stars Scary title, great book!
I was intimidated by the title of this book, and was afraid it was goingto be highly academic. However, the book is completely accessible andfascinating.Dr. Dweck describes her remarkable studies on motivation andachievement, and shows that a fixed view of intelligence (meaning: eitheryou're born smart or you're not) sells us short. Her work has enormousimplications for both childrearing and teaching. This book should berequired reading for all parents and teachers.

5-0 out of 5 stars Reader-friendly
Yes I would definitely say it is reader friendly. Why? I sat and read through and what kept me reading it to end was that it is comprehensible. THere was nothing new in the sense that her subjects were everyday people -students, there were no those statistics that hardly made a sense to alayman like me,it was thought provoking - made me ponder over what reallywent wrong with my kid and myself, gave me some idea on how to tacklefuture problems concerning my kid's attitude towards schoolwork, and mostof all it was presented in a captivating manner. It's like reading astorybook. I didn't have to put on a thinking cap to make myselfintelligent to understand her message.I definitely would recommend to myfriends who are housewives. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Narrative statistics
I read the whole 3rd edition of this book and I did not have many complains, other than the chapter on 2 way ANOVA was too brief. I tried to look inside this book, but such info is not available here at this moment. At least I know the former edition was really good. Everything else than 2 way ANOVA was explained in narrative ways that definitively help to understand this topics much better than so many other book filled of junk equations. However, I'm not so sure if you should use this book if you're currently taking a statistic related course because you may need immediate answers, just equations and repetitive solutions. The proper and deeper knowledge that will be useful in real life when doing research takes much longer time to learn and you shold take it at some time later on. I am not a psychology major, but a chemistry one and the book is just as helpful to me as to the aimed audience, it's math after all, 1 + 1 is 2 no matter which one is your major.

4-0 out of 5 stars stats for behavioral sciences
this book is better than the previous book for the course... this one explains things in better detail as if you are just learning the stuff rather than to assume you already know what the authors are talking about ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Not as good as everyone says
This seems to be the textbook of choice for a research course for most college instructors. That eliminates being able to choose a better written book of which there are many. I found the text not well organized and at times somewhat confusing with explanations that could have been done with fewer words and far more clarity. Myers' and Hansen's "Experimental Psychology" is by far a better choice in my opinion, with better organization, clearer examples and a friendlier style.

5-0 out of 5 stars Superb Read
I know that it sounds strange that a book on research methodology could be interesting, but this is the one.Easy reading.Covers all phases of the thesis and dissertation process.Written by folks who have actually written them and who are currently supervising those are are going through this difficult and challenging process. Many practical and thought-provoking comments, tips, and suggestions. It was recommended as part of my PhD dissertation preparation course work.Read it!! You will not be dissapointed. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars No regrets in reading this book
We live in a world in which twelve-step programmes abound, and worthy and worthwhile as they are, in fact there is nothing sacred about the number twelve that means every process must follow the same number of steps.Perhaps this is a minor observation with which to start, but I did find as I looked through the ten-step programme of Hamilton Beazley that the process is fairly complete, not really lacking in any particular step, and applaud Beazley for not trying to force his system into twelve steps, for the twelve-step anonymous programmes are something different in many ways.
5-0 out of 5 stars Ten steps to a better tomorrow
A practical and unique method for eliminating regrets. The author's approach makes it clear that not only does he talk the talk, but he walks the walk as well.

4-0 out of 5 stars Took a bit long
Book was in condition described but took awhile to arrive.Within time limits- but on the later side.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Learning Tool
I just finished a Research Methods in Psychology class that used this text.Overall, I thought this book was excellent. All the topics discussed are well organized and explained with many helpful examples. The writing is clear and generally easy to understand.I struggled with a couple chapters but class discussions helped clear up what I didn't understand. Some of the students in my class complained that the reading could be a little dry at times and the chapters a little long.I don't necessarily agree with that.I would describe the chapters as thorough and to me, they were interesting.I think those who complained were just less motivated and wouldn't enjoy the subject matter no matter how it was presented.4-0 out of 5 stars Research Methods
This book was helpful in the class taken at a CT University. It was relatively easy to understand, that is, as easy as statisticsCAN be to understand. Most of the students had taken an introductorystats class a while back, so the examples were helpful.I will say that students get in a rut and do not end up reading as they should. This book was very helpful in understanding the lectures as long as the reading was done! ... ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Very powerful story
I read this story at the age of 16.That was 15 years ago and it still has an impact of my belief system today. It changed my beliefs in religion. I loved the way it unlocked the realization that the universe is so wonderfully complex and profound.Even if the story is just that it is wonderful and holds a special place in my heart.

5-0 out of 5 stars Please Read the Book and Decide for Yourself
No matter what you have read about this story and choose to believe, as the saying goes, "the proof is in the pudding."I would like to point out that Morey Bernstein never once in his life said that this story was proof of reincarnation. Not even close. He said that it definitely warrants further invesigation into the phenomenon. At the time the book came out, the western world was against any idea of reincarnation as it flew in the face of western thinking (Although, lets take a look: hundreds of millions of people take reincarnation as a fact of life as part of their religion). The discreditors of the story never once found any way to show the story was a fraud. In fact, the discreditor happened to be a Chicago TABLOID!!!The women allegedly named Bridey Murphy who lived across the street upon further investigation turned out to be the mother of the TABLOID's owner. The person below me mentioned occum's razor (the simplest solution tend to be correct)Think about that.In fact, when a more credible Chicago paper picked up the TABLOID's story, it had to cut out a whole bunch of arguments because they were just way too outrageous.ex:When Ruth Simmons was a girl she had a park accross the street which she played in many times. This explains why she would have said she lived in "the meadow."2-0 out of 5 stars No, it really is bunk
Actually, the reviewer below seems to be misinformed about the reviewer below him/her being misinformed, unless he/she has access to some credible but obscure source (which should certainly be namedif it exists, since the closest thing I've been able to find to a refutation of the contra Bridey Murphy argument is some X Files slash fiction.Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Book based on a fallacie,
This book and others like are based on unproven myths and fallacies that were popular in the nineties.Just like this other lie called facilitation. The truth is that traumatic memories are remembered, not forgotten or repressed. If it happens it is extremely rare.
5-0 out of 5 stars Life Saver
Upon reading this book I was finally able to realize the flashbacks and images that have been haunting me for years.Every turn of the page was another window into my thoughts and emotions offering insight and relief. I was able to piece my feelings together like a puzzle and use that to change my life. This book helped me realize many of the problems I am having and offered me solutions of how to deal with them. I strongly recommend this book to anyone who is struggling with issuesfrom their past. I can guaruntee that if it helped me it can help many others!

2-0 out of 5 stars Debatable
Although this book is very readable and has some reasonable information, the impression it gives is disputed by most psychological researchers. Repressed memories are very rare, and checklists to determine whether sexual abuse has occured are not valid.
