my honest opinion
In the past year I have successfully completed a great internship at Vanderbilt! Anyone who has been through the process of applying and interviewing for an internship knows how challenging it can be.Dr. Megargee's book was extremely helpful to me in this process. Among other things it helped me prepare a good CV! The chapter on possible interview questions was great as far as gathering my thoughts and preparing for the many interviews I had. I highly recommend this book to those preparing for internship. It will be money well spent!

This process is about getting gouged!
Anyone going through the process of getting an internship placement knows that one gets gouged financially. Too bad that Dr. Megargee has to join in. The really useful information in this book could be condensed into a small booklet. Instead, the authors (and likely the publisher) have added tons of "fluff" (common sense information) to make this a "book" for which they can charge full price. I reluctantly recommend this book for the 10 or so pages that ARE helpful.

One Weapon in the War to Obtain A Quality Internship
Though no text can address every nuance of applying for and obtaining a quality psychology internship, this book is a great attempt to offer as much information as possible in a small amount of space.Covering manyissues which need to be addressed FAR in advance of actually making formalapplications, students both months and years away from diving into thechaotic internship search can benefit from reading Megargee's suggestions. Megargee discusses preliminary factors such as what internship sites viewas important in the selection process, as well as how to organize materials(including the vita) and conduct oneself during face-to-face interviews. While some information is "common sense" or redundant, especiallyfor individuals who have traveled frequently or know how to manage airlinehassles and minor travel disasters inherent to visiting multiple cities ina short amount of time, most of the material in this book is helpful adviceand should at least be reviewed by ANY graduate student undertaking theinternship application process.Related texts are available, but Megargeedoes a particularly good job outlining the chronology and ways to cope withthe paperwork nightmare better than others I have seen.A definitepersonal recommendation, and if you find yourself overly prepared(impossible, right?), so much the better :) ... Eye opening
I'm a non-Japanese jr. & sr. high school teacher in Tokyo. As such, I have a reasonable idea of what goes on in secondary schools here but little knowledge of pre- and elementary schooling. Educating Hearts and Minds gave me a lot of the background knowledge that the Japanese teachers and students take for granted, but it also gave me a new way of looking at discipline and understanding where students and teachers are coming from. informative
In response to the other review: Actually, the author is an American social psychologist, and she didn't just "sit back and watch" her kids in Japanese public schools. She did in-depth research of the school systems, which involved multiple trips to Japan (her kids were not primarily schooled in Japanese) and a huge amount of observation, study, and interviewing. I would have given this book 5 stars except that I didn't want to appear to be biased in my aunt's favor!

excellent study of how Japanese schools work
the author is an American anthropologist, and a Mom. She sent two kids to a Japanese public school, and sat back to watch what happened. I admired the book, and learned from it, because the author seems to have noaxe to grind. She also demonstrates that a lot of stereotypes aboutJapanese schools are wrong. For example, she finds disciplinary rulesconsiderably looser than in American schools, with kids given much moreresponsibility at earlier ages than in the U.S. Her experience tracksclosely with what happened to 2 of my kids in a Japanese public school. ...
