5-0 out of 5 stars Required Reading for ALL Officers
As with any book authored by Christensen, one feels the reality and truth of the content. This book is no different, it is enlightening to all inexperienced and experienced police officers. It should be mandatory reading for all police recruits in the academy as well as veteran officers on the job.
4-0 out of 5 stars On mental aspects of combat
This is a very important book about officer survival. The focus is not on tactics, but on mental aspects of combat, and especially the aftermath of violent encounter. 5-0 out of 5 stars A needed tool for law officers
As a former Oakland, CA police sergeant and veteran of a number deadly force encounters, I can recommend this book to all street officers. In 1972 I was involved in an incident with an armed suspect who was killed. Today I can still relate the incident second by second. It will neverleave me.This book allows you to gain from experience of deadlyencounters without having to go through it yourself. This is very helpfuland will certainly save lives.I recommend the book.Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars good as a supplement to kaplan's gre psych review
This book was a disappointment, especially since it's coming from Princeton Review.I took someone else's advice and studied from the Kaplan GRE Psych Review.Kaplan is MUCH better. After making my own personal condensed study guide of all the terms reviewed in Kaplan, I then went to the Princeton Review book.Princeton Review had way less than Kaplan, and they also missed out on really important topics. For example, the cognitive psych chapter is only 4 pages long and includes problem-solving (i.e. definitions for schema, scripts, etc.), information-processing (i.e. semantic model), and emotion.Meanwhile, the Kaplan book goes into all the types of memory, people associated with terms, intelligence, language-- a better representative of my cognitive psych class.
4-0 out of 5 stars A good starting point
I recommend this book to anyone studying for the psychology GRE, just keep in mind that it is not perfect and is not sufficient on its own to prepare one fully for this exam.
5-0 out of 5 stars The best resource I've found
I used this book as my primary study resource and ended up getting an 800 on the test!I should qualify that by admitting that I was a psych major, but I really felt that this book covered essentially everything I needed to know.I consulted other psych GRE preparation books but found that they often had many errors or included a great deal of information extraneous to the test (esp. REA's The Best Test Preparation for GRE Psychology--stay away from that one!).I basically memorized Princeton's Review's book and I believe it really made a difference!Just don't forget to get your hands on as many old psych. GRE's as you can find! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Really powerful intro to NLP in business
I think this is an excellent introduction to NLP.Because its well written and easy to read, it has explanations in the glossary of any the words newcomers might not understand so its easy to understand even if your a complete newbie, and like Andy Smith says its quite short (even though it seems like it is now longer than the edition Andy was writing about.)
1-0 out of 5 stars Smelled like fish, and turned out to be bull
This was my first go at reading something on NLP a while back.It turned out to be a great lesson in discovering pseudoscience. Its a clear enough read.It starts off talking about now NLP is probably the best synthesis of psychology available. However, as you get to the end of the book it turns out to be about the best conflation of pseudoscience and psychobabble in the Scientology universe.
5-0 out of 5 stars Best NLP book for the busy reader
The best thing about this book is its brevity. If that sounds like damning with faint praise, it isn't. So many books about NLP are lengthier than they need to be, making it hard for a busy working person to find the time and motivation to get through them.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
This book was well written and thoroughly explored the issues. The author is an anthropologist who immersed herself in the field of psychiatry, including undergoing extensive analysis herself.
2-0 out of 5 stars A major disappointment
I read this book based on the glowing reviews it had received. It seemed to promise to be an outsider critique of psychiatry in the same lague as such classics as "Asylums". Instead, I found the book to be superficial on a number of different levels and rather unfair to both the psychoanalytic and biological approaches to psychiatric treatment. As a clinical psychologist, I have had alot of exposure to psychiatric training, psychoanalytic therapy, and the scienitific foundations, as well as practice of biological psychiatry. It is from this background, that I found the book lacking on so many fronts.4-0 out of 5 stars History and Critique of the state of Modern Psychiatry
This is a terrific history and critique of the state of modern psychiatry. The author writes with clarity, precision and enthusiasm about her topic. It is an insightful look at the crisis of "brain-as-mind" thinking, and the idea that the "whole" is greater the sum of its percieved parts. Luhmann is about as even handed as a writer can hope to be, but ultimately seems to conclude that the whole person approach to psychiatry is probably best for the individual and the larger culture.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent and engaging resource
This well-written book is surprisingly engaging and inspirational for the potentially dry topic of finances. It provides recommendations for financial strategies across the career lifespan, clarifies financial planning concepts, and explores our psychological relationships with money that can either promote or inhibit our financial well-being. Even therapists who are not in private practice would gain from the insightful chapters on the emotional aspects of money for individuals and couples, and between therapist and client. ... Read more

I noticed that the cover of my book version (3rd edition as well) was different from the one shown as Amazon, but then again, I bought it elsewhere, so please don’t pay too much attention to my book cover (as shown in customers’ images). :)
5-0 out of 5 stars Great little reference book, BUT...
I'm a grad student in clinical psych in Los Angeles. This book wasn't required, but highly recommended by one of my professors. It has been a great tool (especially for those last minute APA style papers that require multiple sources), BUT I was really surprised by the snarky tone it takes with the definition of "parapsychology".One would think that they would at least ATTEMPT to be objective. The definition's tone is not would you expect from a reference book. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars STOP!!!! Dont buy this book!
STOP!!! Don't buy this book! It is clear that the author is only out to make money and it will catch up to him. Aka "you reap what you sow" This book has some of the biggest print I've ever seen, and the information that it provides is mainly common sense. If you are looking to learn something this book is not the place to look. I can not see how Mr. Mogil could even look at himself in the mirror let alone judge another person.

1-0 out of 5 stars Give me a break...
First of all, for anyone with even rudimentary observational skills, it's laughably obvious that the author has reviewed his own book I don't care to know how many times(affording it 5 stars every time, naturally). His first review, where he refers to himself as Mr. Mogil repeatedly, would like to fool us into beleiving that the reviewer is actually someone who read and enjoyed the book. However, the review is cunningly disguised under his own name. I find it hard to believe this man has never held a position in covert operations. So he then writes a second review, still under his own name, making mention of his first review. As if mentioning it will blind people to the fact that he was trying to increase his rating. Clever. If I were 7. But wait, there's more!
3-0 out of 5 stars How many times can an author rate his own book?
Looks like he has two ratings under his own name and then several others from "a reader" which have many suspicious consistencies.Interesting, and I almost bought this book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars I am buying a second copy
People vote with their wallet --particularly when they do it a second time, when they REpurchase. Those who believe in the "revelation of preferences" should note that there are books one buys again when a copy is lost --particularly when they are read cover to cover.
2-0 out of 5 stars The logical theory of probability is not the classical th.
This book is badly marred by the author's failure to carefully differentiate between the classical theory of probability, which was founded in the 17th century, and the logical theory of probability, which J M Keynes started early in the 20th century.Rudolph Carnap made additional contributions in the mid-1950's to the logical theory of probability. In this reviewer's opinion,pp.93-103 contain so many errors of both omission and commission that a novice reader will come away from reading this book with serious gaps in his understanding of what probability means and how it is applied in the real world. The fact that Baron is a strong supporter of the Ramsey-de Finetti subjectivist approach does not justify the very misleading appraisals of the relative frequency and logical theories of probability in his book. Contrary to Baron,Carnap's approach makes use of all the available evidence, including statistical data and relative frequencies.Carnap's approach also makes use of the betting quotients technique used by subjectivists. It simply is not true that"Likewise, the logical view is ordinarily useless as a justification for making probability judgments, except in textbook(or casino)cases of"fair coins"....".The second major draw back of this book is the author's strong belief that all probabilities are precise, exact, definite point estimates.Baron apparently believes that there is always sufficient information to represent the probability by a unique single number . (see Baron,pp.94-96). Baron appears to be completely ignorant of J M Keynes's interval valued approach or of the work of Walley ,Levi,Kyburg and The Society for Interval Valued Probability Theory and Application(SIPTA) in reviving Keynes's long dormant approach.

5-0 out of 5 stars A highly recommended supplementary reference
The Texture Treatment: On The Matter Of Psychoanalytic Technique is a quite straightforward instructional written especially to help students and practitioners better understand the theory, principles, and execution of psychoanalytic technique. Knowledgeably written by Herbert J. Schlesinger (a clinical professor of psychology in psychiatry), The Texture Treatment covers transference and countertransference, theraputic activities, the role of regression in psychoanalysis, the optimum to strive for in a theraputic relationship, the cons and pros of questioning, and much more. A highly recommended supplementary reference and a welcome addition to psychology reading lists that meticulously and clearly walks the reader through the dimensions and unique applications of various techniques and approaches. ...
