A good start
This is definitely a book worth looking at, especially if you are just starting to look at the grad school application process.The Q&A format makes it easy to read, and the sections on timelines, personal statements, and C.V.s were pretty helpful.
Very Helpful
This book was a great help in telling you all the little things you need to consider when applying for graduate school.It also tells you how to go about the application process, from example letters requesting application materials, to how to write up your C. V.This book gave me the answers when no one else seemed to know and went over the niceties concerning the application process (how to decline an offer, should you visit, the importance of the appearance of your application).I know a lot of these things may appear to be insignificant, but when you're so stressed about getting in, why not do the most you can to improve your chances?You never know, and this book helped me through it.And I DID get in to my number one choice. ... Necessary for understanding "the match."
This book is a great step-by-step guide of how to approach the application essays, registering for APPIC, and debunks some urban legends about "the match."Additionally, there are tips on interview questions/questions you should ask, sample cv's, and suggestions for tracking your practicum hours.This book, however, does not offer much information about the APPIC Clearinghouse (God forbid that any of us have to go through that!!!). ... enhancing your own creativity
With extensive scholarship, Dr. Piirto relates a fascinating overview of approaches to creativity, from the mystical to the pragmatic, the psychodynamic and psychometric to the cognitive. She notes that psychologist Mihalyi Csikszentmihalyi makes a distinction of "Big C" creativity (eminent people making significant contributions to a domain), and "little c" creativity "by which human beings lead their everyday lives."

Very complete -- certainly all you need to create this experiential learning, and in several languages.I simple, yet effective exercise.

Not mcuh here
This is basically a card game. There are several variations and learners play the game silently in groups with each group having slightly different rules. As learners move to differen tables they have a diffucult time adjusting to the new rules since no verbal communication is permitted.
Great for the Board Room and College Classroom
I'm a college professor who also does diversity training.I use BARNGA in my corporate trainings as well as in my college classroom. Everyone loves it! The simulation is an excellent way of driving home the idea that every environment (an institution, a business, a classroom) has unwritten rules that we assume have been communicated to the uninitiated.When the new person experiences problems, we all too often attribute the problem to a lack of skills rather than to a lack of knowledge about the "rules."This game is a great deal of fun and allows the facilitator to engage the participants in some serious discussion afterward about diversity.Excellent!Get it today!You won't be sorry. ... A research psychologist's bible
This book is a must have for anyone in or considering a career in academia as a psychologist.It offers wonderful perspectives for what you should and should not do at all stages of your academic career.As a psychology grad student, I am recommending it to all of my peers.I could not be happier with this book.It is a wonderful source of professional guidance and inspiration.

definitely worth buying

The Supervisory Relationship
Drs Sarnat and Frawley-O'Dea have made an original contribution to the literature of psychoanalysis and psychotherapy.Their discussion of the contemporary supervisory relationship is rich and alive, reaching back and forth between the dyads of supervisor/supervisee, supervisee/patient and supervisee/analyst, and seeing parallels and counterpoints in all of these. I found it particularly useful to hear how these experienced therapists lay out the supervision they endorse, how direct they are about their expectations, and how this creates an atmosphere in which growth can occur for the trainee along many dimensions. The interplay of two different treating and teaching personalities is also engaging and enlightening. The clinical material is pertinent, alive and well explicated. Among the subsidiary pleasures and benefits of this well constructed book are a review of early psychoanalytic thought about supervision which allows a review of early psychoanalytic thought itself, and a lucid discussion of contemporary relational psychotherapy.Dr Sarnat brings her remarkable synthetic powers to a unification and differentiation of many schools of thought.Both authors are disclosing in an extremely helpful way about their own training experiences and thus model an aspect of their own development in print much as I am sure they do in the consulting room.This is an outstanding book. ... Not an effective study guide!
Everybody learns differently, so this book might work for you. However, I read the first two chapters, and never opened it again. The NCE exam is a multiple choice exam... this book's fill in the blank and short essay style questions absolutely did not help me prepare for the NCE. The fill in the blank questions were extremely picky at a level of detail not on the actual NCE (I took it April 16.) Yet, the "summaries" offered in each chapter did not cover a large portion of the material covered in my Masters counseling program. I also found it to be a boring read, worse than most textbooks. Buy the Encyclopedia of Counseling instead!

the best psych resource!
this is the perfect book!it was the only one i used and found it to be very helpful.i think i did well on my exam and i owe to this book!

This book is all you need!
I ended up cramming for the GRE Psych test for 2 weeks (instead of the recommended 6 weeks).I only bought Princeton Review's study guide and I pretty much just made sure I knew the info reviewed in it.They divide the info into sections (Memory, Evolutionary, Social, etc.) and gave anywhere from 2-10 pages of information you should know for the test about that particular section.I didn't even look at my intro psych text, or any of my second/third year course textbooks.Well, the study guide must have been worth it, because I got a 700 on the GRE Psych, and other than a few questions on the test, the book prepared you for them.

670 after only two days of review!!!
I took the Psychology GREs after being out of school for 2 years.I planned and planned for it, and bought about 4 review books.Time went by, work stayed busy, and I never found time to study.Finally, 2 days before the test, I took a couple of vacation days from work and just crammed.Read more

Wortham's newest book again combines precise and clear theoretical basis for useful and practical findings. He shows that we cannot use the easy dichotomy of subject matter and social development or of male and female student learning styles and classroom roles. Rather, teachers and students shape identities partly in terms of the subject matter, and boys and girls develop social and personal class identities in complex ways, partly based on their responses to classroom material. Great adjunct to marriage counseling
The insights, explanations and exercises in this book were comforting & helpful.My husband apprediated it as well.
Helped me through a hard time
Well I just found out my wife of 2 yrs has been cheating on me, with a guy she met during our engagement. This taught me alot, and helped me face my insecurities I had afterwards. So we're still married, and much more in touch with each other right now.
Helpful over a painful weekend
This may sound like a strange novel, but I bought this book the night I realized that my husband was having an affair. I could not put it down. It was so on-the-mark. Reading this helped me tremendously in a time in which all I wanted to do was sit on the couch and cry. It pushed me beyond the feelings of hurt and rejection to making decisions and start recovering.
