5-0 out of 5 stars An invaluable, practical guide for students & practitioners
Organisational Research Methods is an invaluable, practical guide for both students and practitioners in the social sciences. This book is particularly unique as it provides the theoretical/academic bases for research yet translates these into practical steps for how to undertake best practice research. The authors highlight a plethora of issues that researchers themselves may not have considered, and provide constructive advice for addressing each possible problem that may arise during the course of a research project. Based on their expertise and experience as both practitioners and academics, the authors provide helpful examples throughout the book that assist the reader in applying the knowledge directly to their own project.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Superb and Thorough Work
This is a book for anyone doing supervision in a mental health field. It provides a much needed and innovative approach to supervision and includes material on strategies, diversity, legal and ethical considerations, role of personal values, evaluation, and disruptions to the supervisory process. There is a wealth of information and resources to enrich every level of supervision. It can be used as a text or for reference and contains excellent tools in the appendices.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Text for Graduate Courses
This book reflects an intelligent, scholarly approach to a complex process that examines all aspects of competency in clinical supervision. The chapters dealing with diversity and ethics are outstanding, and the appendices provide a gold mine of practical guidance for both the supervisee and the supervisor. This is a must-read for academics, for practicum, internship, and postdoctoral supervisors, and for licensing regulators as well as a great text for much needed graduate courses.5-0 out of 5 stars A Unique Offering to the Field
Clinical Supervision is unique in that it incorporates considerations of science, ethics, and diversity and does so in a clear way that readily can be implemented. Both supervisors and supervisees, in academic and clinical settings, have much to gain from reading this fine book.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Mandatory Reference Resource for all Internship Coordinators
Sweitzer and King have written one of the most comprehensive guides to help students make the most out of their internship experiences. They cram more than enough techniques, resources and advice to help a student problem solve through one of the strangest places on earth: an office. The book is intended to be a text for students but it will more likely be used by internship coordinators who need to develop training modules or programs to prepare students for internships. The authors effectively blend relevant components of student development, career development, experiential education and human resources within a model that predicts the typical internship experience.
5-0 out of 5 stars The Successful Internship
I used this book to help guide me through my internship for Social Work. I found it to be a great help in how I was able to see myself working professionally throughout my internship. This text let me know that experiences I went through were normal and that I was not going crazing or doing things wrong. Things that happened were normal and expected. My supervisor was very supportive during my internship with his agency even though I was having difficulties at times and I now know this is because he already knew that I would experience them. I knew from reading the text that client interaction would at times be difficult and my feelings with them could cross over personally and I had to be aware of my professionalism. I have really enjoyed this book and would recommend it to anyone who is involved in an internship. I find it vital to help one understand how they are doing in their internship and how normal things are that are happening to them during there internship. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Very readable, clearly written, good examples
While rather simple for some of the more advanced counseling students in my pastoral counseling class, this book proved to be an excellent primer in basic helping skills. It was a good review for me as well (I have over 20 years experience in rehab counseling).

5-0 out of 5 stars Solid writing, easy to read, and informative
I first used this book in my graduate program in a class for communication and leadership. This skills taught in this book are outstanding. Now, I plan to use the ideas from this book in my own career, as well as helping an undergraduate peer staff at a university learn the basic helping guidelines. This book is highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fabulous guide for research and practice.
We just completed a doctoral level seminar by using this book to guide process research. It's fabulous. While the book is certainly appropriate for teaching basic counseling/helping skills at the upper undergraduate and graduate levels, I also believe it has applicability for advanced practicum and research. 5-0 out of 5 stars A Landmark Research Book
The pioneering research work of Robert Ressler, Ann Burgess and John Douglass is presented in startling statistical detail.Thirty-six sexual murderers were interviewed: the data about their motivations, drives, and fantasies was catalogued and indexed in insightful graphic detail. Perhaps the psychological, predatory horror that lurks in the minds of serial killers will never be fully understood, but Douglass, Burgess, and Ressler's work offers some stunning insights into the mind-set of some of today's most horrific sexual killers.
5-0 out of 5 stars The textbook on Criminal Profiling
Indepensible. The textbook for criminal profilers and forensic investigators.A scholarly colossal work of invaluable and useful information.Ressler builds a very convincing case for the statisical analysis and identification of serial killers types.

3-0 out of 5 stars Thought Provoking if not Entirely Persuasive
Those familiar with other works by Alfie Kohn, such as "No Contest: The Case Against Competition," will know the basic tenets of his argument. Kohn has long argued that a misplaced zeal for marketplace competition has distorted the way we think about nonmarket or at least nonmonetary goods, such as education. His is a sobering counterweight to the voucher enthusiasts and market ideologues; but he fails to acknowledge that competitiveness -- relations of ranking, hierarchy -- is a deep and ineradicable aspect of human nature. Yes, competition is no cure-all; incentive programs can result in attempts to game the system and produce spurious achievement metrics. But reformers, whether in education or in business, must avail themselves to a fully panoply of techniques.

3-0 out of 5 stars Socialism
I believe the book presents a VERY socialistic view that is not in line with the realities of our modern day society. The author describes study upon study and experiment upon experiment that show people who are motivated intrinsically rather than extrinsically produce better results. This isn't a news flash to most. The real question is how some people have acquired intrinsic motivation.Kohn believes this can be achieved by refraining from giving grades to students and not rewarding employees with more pay for better performance. His alternative suggestion is for students to run classrooms in community style, working with one another.Companies should pay employees enough but should never tie performance appraisals to increased wages.Incentive pay plans and even just giving positive reinforcement are definite no-nos since they are thought to cause extrinsic motivation only. Many people are not intrinsically motivated and while I believe this type of drive could be slightly impacted by the external environment, I think much is determined by genetics and predisposition. At the least, we stand a chance of making a difference in what motivates young children, but certainly don't have enough time to change all of the adults we encounter in the workplace.Psychologists may be able to focus on people, one at a time, to make a difference in their intrinsic motivation, but Kohn doesn't really even offer an alternative to rewards for the common manager in today's workplace. If we went with Kohn's ideas everyone could get into Harvard because there would be no grades or tests and all tellers, salespeople, etc. would be paid the same amount, regardless of their successes and contributions to a company.Does anyone believe this stuff is practical??Kohn touts the opposite of just about everything that makes the United States a great place to live!If we wanted to live like this we should consider immigrating to the USSR.I'm glad I read it because it does make me think twice about concepts that I never questioned in the past, but I'm happy to pull it from our company's training library.

1-0 out of 5 stars Well, HE didn't write this book for free....
He has some useful ideas, but in most cases his solutions are not practical. Maybe people would have better luck if they could choose their own rewards?

Historians explore the early experiences of Lincoln, Churchill, Einstein, Hitler, and Napoleon to find the beginnings of the motivation which shaped their careers.Attempting to learn why people do what they do in particular places and times help to understand their motivations and the consequences.Basic reality is that each and every person is living in and reacting to his environment in different ways at different times.Cyclical changes take place according to the immediate environments and the participants in this drama called life.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best
One of the best books introductory books in psychology. A school of psychology without this one is surely missing an action. The authors are top most in the field.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very compelling
The authors' use of case studies and real-life examples makes this more than a textbook -- and much more readable than one. I found myself excited about reading each chapter. And I know I'll be looking up things in it in the future. My only quibble is that I found many copyediting errors that I hope the publisher will fix for future editions.

5-0 out of 5 stars go professor Gerrig!!!!
I had the pleasure of taking intro psych with professor Gerrig (one of the authors),and surprise, this was the book we used. I found it to be a great resource;it is so jam packed with useful information about things that we encounter in life that i'd recommend buying this book even if you're not a psych student. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars I passed
I read the book and passed with a 710. The only minor criticism I have is that the practice test has four choices per question and the real test has 5 choices. On the real test, out of the 5 choices, there are TWO GOOD options for each question, so when I left the test, I had absolutely no idea if I passed or totally tanked. I am very, very glad I had the book. I didn't think that the information in the book was dated (as another reviewer commented.) I took the exam in June 2005. GOOD LUCK to you all!

5-0 out of 5 stars About the praxis exam and Thompson's book...
I first used the ETS book to study for the Praxis and it wasn't very helpful as it only gave general guidelines to study; however, Thompson's book has more information that is relevant for the exam. I studied w/this book and passed the PRAXIS!! I find that this book has relevant information and provides better guidelines on what to study. Good Luck.
5-0 out of 5 stars YOU NEED THIS BOOK TO PASS!
Folks, the ETS book only goes so far... This guide is direct and practical.

2-0 out of 5 stars It's All Theory, So.....Who Knows.
For many decades now, Dr. William Glasser has been espousing both choice theory (his theory of human motivations) and the "quality school" (the education model based on choice theory). This book goes a long way in not only describing the "quality school" education model, but in showing how it ties to choice theory.
3-0 out of 5 stars The Quality School
Good overall concept.Rather redundant and begins to feel like overkill after awhile. This book doesn't offer much in the way of example - has it really been put into practice with success? Not sure because it's more preaching than showing.

2-0 out of 5 stars Lacks Evidence
Glasser takes an idea that has some merit and then keeps pushing it long after it becomes unhelpful.Glasser would have teachers quit using rewards and punishments to motivate students. He tries to justify this warm and fuzzy theory by pointing out misuses of rewards and punishments but its hard to understand how he could be blind to productive and fair uses of rewards and punishments that many teachers use.I know a poor teacher that use Glasser's model and a teacher that is good despite using it.If you want more objective research on schooling check out Stevenson and Stigler's the Learning Gap. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Specializated information about the sociohistoric paradigm
