5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Read for All Behavior Analysts
Controversial Therapies exposes the ugly, inconvenient truth about sensory integration, auditory integration training, facilitated communication, positive behavior support, and a host of other fads and bogus treatments. Jacobson, Foxx, and Mulick have complied a set of chapters, and written many themselves, that provides all the ammunition that anyone needs to shoot down these wasteful and chronic malignancies that pervade the field of developmental disabilities and especially autism.

Some notes about the book:
5-0 out of 5 stars Essential Reading
Autism and other disorders on the Autistic Spectrum are among the most serious of behavioral diagnoses. As such, the ASD's should be the focus of our most intensive, science-based efforts to find ways to address the difficulties we associate with the diagnoses (see www.asatonline.org).Instead, treatment has been a history of fad, with charlatans or the uninformed pushing useless and potentially dangerous "treatments."This book will inform you of the history, as well as current trends. Most importantly, it will show you how to avoid the common non-science based traps. The field's friend, Dr. John Jacobson, recently died. This book is a fitting final contribution. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Widow to Widow
This book is a must for anyone who is a widow. My husband died last year, and this book helped me look at many of the routine but-so-very-important questions and feelings that I was having; it was very comforting to know that they were normal, and someone did understand.

5-0 out of 5 stars Equals C.S. Lewis in honesty and depth of emotion
This book saved me. I have read it twice and the heartfelt emotion of grief speaks clearly in every chapter. I gave it to a friend who had recently become widowed at a young age and it helped her with her grief enormously. Since that time, I have had several requests for the book, and I am going to order additional copies to loan out.
5-0 out of 5 stars Best book on grief ever
This is a beautifully written, moving book.I am a minister and have read widely about grief since I deal with it often in my work. This is hands-down the best book on grief I have read.I use it often in my work with grieving individuals, and in sermons.I am very grateful to Stephanie Ericsson for sharing her experiences and wisdom. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Practical and reasonable way to raise children
I read the chinese translation that I found old Karl's way of raising his child is practical and reasonable. Not simply feeding knowledge to his children, he always used curiorsity and interest to develop his children that helps little Karl gradually develop into great scholor.4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
This book is a "lost gem", I finally located an old copy and am happy to say the wait was worthwhile. While much time is spent talking about Karl, as opposed to the method, there are still some interesting tips.I also think that it is possible that this book may have influencedboth Montessori and Charlotte Mason as there are some interestingsimilarities.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very interesting
I have located a copy of this book and can not say enough good about it. My wife and I plan to take much of it to heart, and try to implement it in our own home with our 9 month old. While a few parts of the book do seem abit dated, considering that it was written in the 17th Century it is stillquite fresh. For that matter, it is a lot fresher than much of theLeft-over "unschooling" materials written in the '60's and 70's(and even today!). ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Coping With Sorrowon the Loss of Your Pet
My best friend died 1.5 years ago and I still miss her terribly - she was my 15 year old cat. This book was very useful to me during my time of intense mourning. While I know that her loss was a significant and horrible event in my life, recognition of the death of animal companions is not common in our society. This book helped me to see that I was not alone in my grief and that it was okay and normal to feel such grief.I actually purchased several books on this topic and found this one to be the best.

5-0 out of 5 stars Some help & understanding through difficult loss
After my best friend of 12 1/2 years Skipper passed away in early 2005, I was a wreck and needed some grounding. This book offered empathy for the loss of my dog & helped me understand the feelings I had at the time. This book won't erase the pain, but it offers objectivity...God Bless all of man's best friends.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must read for men and women
Marvin Allen's straightforward, easy-to-read style of writing makes this book a must for anyone who wants to understand why men think and act the way they do, and how they differ from women emotionally. Many clients' stories and first-hand accounts help illustrate the points the author makes. The appendix offers additional resources for further study/help. As a quote on the front cover states, this is especially "a perfect book to give to a man who is suspicious of therapy and therapists" as well as a must-read for the women they love.

3-0 out of 5 stars Where's the Man's Anger??
The book was good at describing how a man may have obtained his anger and was insightful. It did lack the father who was hostile in a psychological manner through manipulation, subtle verbal abuse, and unfair treatment in comparison to other siblings. There was a mention of obvious verbal abusive but nothing on subtle abuse. What about the man who wasn't physically abused or told outright that he was a loser??Also, the chapters on love relationships were geared toward the passive angry man and did not take into account the angry man who uses things like verbal abuse and control against his spouse.Men who are angry are often abusive themselves. The controlling man already has control over his "dominion" and the wife does not get to pick the "furniture", etc....To an angry verbally abusive man telling him that he should have his way at home when he already has control issues will only make things worse. It is good to address the passive man who never speaks up but there was a lack of attention to the angry man who will only allow his way.Lets not go to extremes in either the Men's movement or Women's movement. Each individual is valuable. The book does not talk about how to create mutuality and work as a partner or team (compromise in decision making). It merely talks about men taking control. This book may be good for the passive man who is angry but may further enhance characteristics of the man who is the "nice" guy to everyone outside his intimate relationship and a controlling verbally abusive guy to his spouse. The book would be much better if it had addressed the issues of a mutual relationship and the extreme of being vebally abusive versus speaking up.Speaking up for oneself does not mean disregarding your partners feelings or desires.A relationship should involve both parties making decisions and compromising when there is a difference of opinion.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Tribute to our Brothers and Sisters...A Book to TREASURE in our time of sorrow
When I first read this book my own brother and only sibling had been dead for many years.During the course of those years I had read every grief book I could find, yet not one spoke directly to me or my situation like Dr. Wray's book.As I read her book I was amazed at how her feelings following the death of her brother so paralleled my own feelings following the death of my brother.Losing a sibling is one of life's greatest, and often, unrecognized losses.Although nothing can take away the sadness and the sense of unfairness that we feel when our brother or sister dies, Dr. Wray's words help us to understand that we are not alone in our sorrow.Comfort comes from the knowledge that others share our pain, and as the book conveys, we, as surviving siblings are forever connected.Dr. Wray truly captures the essence of sibling loss and provides a framework for the stages of grief that a bereaved person typically goes through after the death of a loved one.I was captivated by the experiences of other surviving siblings whose stories are so beautifully woven by Dr. Wray throughout the book. Each chapter ends with a "What Helps" section containing many straightforward and practical suggestions for coping with grief. There is an excellent resource list at the end of the book.In addition to recommending the book to other bereaved siblings, I have also recommended it to anyone who has experienced the loss of a loved one. This book will be a treasure to all those who are suffering through grief!

5-0 out of 5 stars From One Who Has Not Lost A Sibling
This is a must read for everyone!Although I have not lost a sibling, I happened upon this book after my cousin died.Through her own story, Dr. Wray helped me to understand what her sisters were going through and how I could help support them in their own personal loss.I keep a few copies at hand to give to friends and acquaintances that have lost siblings.Time after time, I am thanked for having recognized and validated their pain. And time after time the response I receive from those who have read the book is "FINALLY someone understands what I am experiencing." Dr. Wray's book has not only helped me to become a more empathetic person, it has given comfort and guidance to those suffering a tremendous loss.

5-0 out of 5 stars The MOST helpful of all publications
This book was definitely the MOST helpful publication that I encountered after my tremendous loss.Even though my tears flowed freely throughout the reading, I felt the most wonderful resolution and peace at the end.No other reading had this effect on me.Despite already being a fan of the highly-credentialed Dr. Wray, this book "nailed" the spiritual, emotional, physical and psychological aspects of sibling loss for me personally.God bless Dr. Wray! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars An invaluable aid to any grieving parent
Shortly after the death of our son in 1977, I saw Harriet Sarnoff Schiff interviewed about this book on one of the morning news shows.I immediately ordered this book, and it became an invaluable tool for healing from the terrible pain of losing a child for both my husband and me.
5-0 out of 5 stars Very Educational
This book covers every aspect of the grieving soul. People sit around thinking they must be going crazy with the thoughts and feelings they have in times of grief. This book explains those feelings and lets the reader know they are not crazy or alone, they are very normal, and things will get better. After my daughters murder in 2003 I read every book I could get my hands on and NOTHING helped me more than this book. It covers all ages, and circumstance, loss of spouse, child, sibling, parent, and does it in a way that flows not separating instances so much that only a portion of the book covers what you truly need. I couldn't put it down until I had read it to the end and I felt so much better. This auther can really get to the heart and soul of the pain of loss and let you know you are normal and the reasons why you feel the way you do. I am so glad I read this book and will continue to share it with those in need. It is the only book I have read except for one otherthat deals with the loss of an adult child My daughter was 23 and it was perfect. I bought this book because of a review on this site and I am so gratefull. Thank you Harriet Schiff for this book where ever you are, I am so thankfull

5-0 out of 5 stars Blessed by this Book
By giving practical advice and necessary information, this book helped my husband and I get through the death of our infant son 27 years ago. As aclergy couple, we have used her information and suggestions in comforting and advicing grieving parents over the years. When our 7 year old granddaughter died suddenly last summer, we were able to use the invaluable practical information to help our daughter and son-in-law get through the funeral and impossible weeks and months following her death. It is written from the knowledge that only the pain, grief, and life-experience of losing a child can bring. We along with many othersare blessed by having read it. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Understanding and appreciating men
Absolute must reading for anyone who wants to understand the meaning behind what boys and men do and the reason behind their behaviors. Amust read for wives and mothers.

5-0 out of 5 stars Short, hard hitting, and to the point
This book is roughly 135 pages. It covers a wide range of relatively complex ideas presented in a clear, well organized manner.Ever notice that when someone really understands something they don't need 300 pages to explain it?
5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best books i ever read
Between an ex husband that dove off the deep end and a son living with two strong women and without an appropriate father figure, I have been wondering both what makes men snap like that, and what consequence living without a father might have on my son. How to be a mother and a father to him, how not to hurt my baby in the way I see people around me, and myself, hurting and thus hurting others. I believe every mother and father should read this. It truly spoke to me, and I would not put it down until I was done with it some time early this morning. Written in a language everyone can understand.

Editorial Review

Martin Seligman, a renowned psychologist and clinical researcher, has been studying optimists and pessimists for 25 years. Pessimists believe that bad events are their fault, will last a long time, and undermine everything. They feel helpless and may sink into depression, which is epidemic today, especially among youths. Optimists, on the other hand, believe that defeat is a temporary setback or a challenge--it doesn't knock them down. "Pessimism is escapable," asserts Seligman, by learning a new set of cognitive skills that will enable you to take charge, resist depression, and make yourself feel better and accomplish more. 5-0 out of 5 stars This book changed my life
Over the years, I've read a lot of self-help and psychology books.None has made the difference like "Learned Optimism."I was in the midst of a bad marriage, had lost my career, and wondered how the hell I had ended up in such a lousy life.Seligman's book helped me see (1) how incredibly pessimistic I was, which I hadn't realized, (2) how the expectation of failure had kept me from pursing goals, and (3) how optimism and taking reasonable risks could help.Since that time, I got out of the awful marriage, moved to a new city, found a job I love, and have taken many more risks, most of which have had very happy results.Largely because, from Seligman, I learned how to put optimism to work for me.
1-0 out of 5 stars Overcome Depression Through Self-Delusion
For the most part I consider this book a complete waste of time. The author takes forever to get to the point (which is; How to Change Your Mind and Your Life) and when he finally does, his half baked philosophy is disappointing. He seems to think that self-delusion is the answer to what ails us. If we find something upsetting or that causes us to be depressed, just mentally conjure up an alternative reality for ourself and all will be well. Also, I really don't see the benefit of the author's rather arbitrary categorization of "pessimism" and "optimism" regarding mental self-reflection. Shouldn't the primary focus be cognitive distortion itself? Isn't that the root cause, of mental anguish, which should really be addressed? Just because 'winners' in life are often delusional (as expounded by the author), that doesn't substantiate that delusion is an optimal way to live ones life. What of the long term effect on not only the individual but society itself?
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
This book is wonderful because it explains the strengths and weaknesses of pessimism and optimism in various contexts. There is a simple test so that you can determine where you stand. If you want to understand why optimism is less accurate than pessimism and how optimism can promote good feelings, read this great book. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars a good book to share with younger middle school/late elementary schools students
Unique and the book deals with an inportant skill for all children to master.

1-0 out of 5 stars Horribly overpriced! Order carefully!
Never before, in years of purchases at Amazon, have I ever actually returned an item until I purchased this book (and its companion). ($) dollars is WAY too much to charge. I bought this for my 10 year old son, but the content is skimpy and mostly drawings. There is at most a paragraph or two on a page, with huge text and lots of white space. This is more like an essay paper than a book. Thanks but no thanks...I'll take my ($) back!

5-0 out of 5 stars An easy-to-read help for stressed-out kids
This book is not only a great resource for kids who are feeling stressed, but also a humorous gentle reminder for adults in the same boat! The author identifies sources of stress and reaction to stress, tells how your body reacts to stress (i.e., heart speeds up, sweating, etc.), discusses the fight or flight reaction, discusses good ways (i.e., deep breathing, listening to relaxing music, gradual muscle relaxation, making a gratitude list, visualization, making a worry jar, doing chores, exercising, prioritizing, talking to a confident, etc.) and not-so-good ways to deal with stress (taking it out on others, running away from home, avoiding school doing drugs or drinking, etc.), and gives some examples of anonymous children who have been stressed and the inappropriate methods they used to deal with the situation. It gives a list of things to do to help avoid becoming stressed in the first place (eating healthy, exercising, getting enough sleep, etc.).The illustrations are large and appealing and the text is easy-going and even humorous while still giving serious, sound advice on how to relax. For instance, the part of the book that lists effective ways to deal with stress (giving examples of "stress messes" and aids) is called "How to Be a Panic Mechanic."I read this book to my somewhat shy, anxious 9-yr.-old daughter tonight and right away she opened up about the things that were stressing her out lately.I recommend it highly. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent explanation
This book does an excellent explanation of exactly how I felt toward my mother, and helped me to start to release my victimized perception of myself regarding her. The philosophies about hurting nature as a result of my mom seemed quite out of place, everywhere they were mentioned, but nearly everything else was well placed.

4-0 out of 5 stars Yes, it has some hyperbole and a pop psychology feel but it is still thought-provoking
Having just used the "Search Inside the Book" feature on Amazon to look at parts of another of Gurian's books (about choosing movies and books for boys and teens), I used it again to get a feel for this book. It convinced me to buy it, just as it convinced me NOT to buy that other book.
5-0 out of 5 stars "I'm very close to my mother."
Would it not seem common sense self preservation to politely run not walk in the other direction from any man who wants you to know this about him right off the bat?Mother-bound men in literature and film from Oedipus to Norman Bates -- and every sentimental serial killer with a picture of his mother on his nightstand in between -- have yet to teach even 21st Century women the hard lessons in steering clear of this terrible spidermother tragedy.Should have long been a classic in popular psychology; recommended. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A Sourcebook for Therapy in the 21st Century
Dr. Rossi has again written a "trail blazing" book. Those familiar with his previous publications know the breadth of his work - a work spanning Ericksonian Hypnosis, Jungian Psychology, Mind-Body Healing, Biological rhythms, and the psychology of Dreaming. He has not written a book on mathematical models of healing but it is clear that he has also studied this area in considerable depth. All the subjects listed above are revisited and taken to new levels in this book. 5-0 out of 5 stars Peak of a brilliant career?
I mean this review to be brief so I'll state my conclusion at the start: this is an excellent book covering biochemistry up to psychotherapy. It is a must for any Rossi fan, if only because it has that 'culmination-of-a-brilliant-career' feel to it.5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent integration of biology and mind
As a clinical psychologist with a background in biochemistry, I am very thrilled to see the author to integrate the gene expression, environment and mind into a coherent and scientifically-based picture. The book offers a solid foundation for the biological bases for psychotherapy and provides a holistic viewpoint upon human activities. It is highly recommended ! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent collection of essays
Ever since J. Huizinga's historical study "Homo Ludens" was published, cultural theorists searched in vain for a comparable explanation of how individual mental life related to our complex social structures of play. This collection of texts by Winnicott was the first brilliant single-volume salvo that Winnicott spent years of his research and analytic practice on studying and presenting in specialized medical journals. So, "Playing and Reality," J. Huizinga's "Homo Ludens," and M. Bakhtin's newly translated work on the carnival in literature and society "Rabelais and his World" all offer us to explore how we grow up in relation to the important element of 'social or spatial play' and interaction in several aspects of culture and how it is integrated into our lives at the 'deepest' level - to the point where we can't explain 'identification' without it. The perennial question concerning the relation between work and play (our weekly, if not daily, routine) is discussed in depth. The insights of this book have simply never been introduced by anyone else psychoanalyically except throughout Freud's brief pages of 'Fort-Da' (peek a boo), Klein's intent to crack the child's code that underlies the child's pre-semantic lexical items, in short to through the words' investment with "portable worlds" that get packed around just as with the child's other belongings, from space to space. Highly recommended. If you haven't read these books, it's ok, because you're living them "everyday," just as the psychiatrist, ethnologist and historian M. deCerteau felt compelled to entitle his book: "The Practice of Everyday Life." Or as Winnicott might put it, "Playing and Reality." Routledge has done a fine editorial job here of cleaning up the texts from their original poor-quality publication in scattered journals. As the choice of a crisp, clear typeface and a good use of spatial arrangement, there is more of Winnicott's difficult thoughts present, and there is subsequently more play in Winnicott's presentations of mental reality in this collection of perceptive thoughts and strong arguments. Regarding comments from several other reviewers on the use-value of object-relations theory, Derrida was already concerned with joining these two in his preface to his translation of Husserl's 'Geometry' text, and he then in fact does so in his 1967 'Speech and Phenomena'. The next year Deleuze will publish a remarkable book that is often referred to as 'his' Husserl book (Derrida and he were writing at the same time but did not know of each others' projects). Deleuze's Husserl book ('The Logic of Sense') is from the first page to last an extraordinarily forceful book using post-Lacanian psychoanalysis to rethink "the object" of philosophy through object-relations. Neither Deleuze nor Derrida took Lacan seriously, who simply recited Kojeve's misunderstanding of Hegel. That "play" is literally "central" to Derrida's philosophy tells you how important Winnicott and the other authors listed have been in this thought.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Profound Opening into the Origins of Love and Culture
I am sorry to be so blunt about this, but previous reviewers Sierra and whomi do not appear to have really grasped Winnicott's work in this book (Sierra really has no clue at all). I have to respond at some length. But better to just read the book.
2-0 out of 5 stars Intellectual babble
Winnicott's book was difficult for me to get through. With the exception of his case studies, which were somewhat entertaining, it's nothing but monotonous intellectual babble. The title sounds interesting, but the content was not useful to me in the least. There is nothing in this book that would help a typical person to raise an emotionally healthy child. Winnicott is writing for a very select group of people: other psychoanalysts. Read more
