5-0 out of 5 stars Deep, Poignant, Insightful and meaningful
I tend to get attracted by a sort of synchronicity or intuitive feeling to certain books that resonate with the current process of what I call my spiritual journey. This book is one of those I would cherish and remember, and refer to, and meditate upon it. It is not only writen by someone deeply in touch with psychological understanding but also by a person inmersed consciously on her spiritual path, or inner journey towards enlightnement or liberation or full awakening of consciousness as you wish to name this subtile and many times confusing path.

4-0 out of 5 stars Children Held Hostage
Children Held Hostage is the very best book for help in understanding and identifying PARENTAL ALIENATION.It should be in the hands of every Lawyer, Guardian ad Litem, Psychologist and any one working with children. It, also, is very beneficial for parents to read, who are suffering from this disorder.Parental Alienation is cruel and breaks the bond-of-love between a parent and child. Before allowing a Guardian ad Litem or others to intervene, he/she should read this book. I cannot praise it enough.

This is the most in depth book on the market for someone in a hostile custody battle involving parental alienation syndrome. The authors have addressed significant issues in great detail. They have provided useful tools to combat the issues at handand given hope to those embroiled in the battle.

Editorial Review

A practical guide for coping with the loss of a parent, this book was written by a journalist who has lost both. Edward Myers makes it clear that no matter how old we are, the death of a parent can be devastating, evoking intense and complex feelings that have long-lasting implications. Comprised of advice from therapists, practices for self-help groups and first-person accounts, Myers covers the grieving process and differentiates between the impact of sudden death and slow decline. He also offers advice for funeral planning, dividing personal property and resolving feelings such as guilt, shame and isolation. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Buy This Book if Your Parent Is Ill ... DON'T Wait!!!
My beloved mother recently died and this book was recommended to me by the hospice counselors. I only wish I had known about it in the months prior to Mom's death. If you have a parent who is suffering a potentially long illness, especially with increasingly extensive care and nursing needs, buy this book NOW -- don't wait!It offers many helpful resources on the practical sideas well as offering comfort and understanding. As the author says, "There is perhaps no greater source of needless frustration during a family crisis than the belief that you are dealing with it entirely alone. Even the most competent adult can be worn down..."He then proceeds to provide resources in the Appendix, including organizations and resources to find "Information on Death and Dying", "Information on Aging and Care of the Aging" (including the organization called Children of Aging Parents...which I wish I had known about earlier), "Information About Health Issues", "Information on Alcohol and Drug Abuse", "Information on Hospice Care", "Information on Funeral and Memorial Societies", "Information on Living Wills and Organ Donation", "Information on Suicide Prevention and Counseling", "Information on Widowhood", "Information on Assistance for Women", among other topics. If it's too late for that, you will also find this book helpful as it presents compassionate advice for coping with the emotional and practical aspects of losing a parent. Everyone's story and emotional handling of this life-changing event is unique, but you will inevitably find yourself in some of the examples that the author uses. In a time like this, it's comforting to know you're not alone and it is possible to cope. Another book with a different approach, but which is also comforting is "How to Survive the Loss of a Parent" by Lois F. Akner, CSW. ... Read more

As a man who considers himself a feminist, I was very interested in this topic. I have often felt that our definitions of masculinity and femininity are damaging to both genders, and this book strengthened my conviction and further informed my arguments. This book is full of insightful statistics and useful cross-cultural and historical references.

5-0 out of 5 stars Easy to Understand
I found this book to be written in a way that is very easy to comprehend, and expresses the ideas clearly. The chapters are short and concise. This book is a great tool to use not only for classes, but to refer to in the future.

5-0 out of 5 stars You cannot go wrong...
I have a son with autism, a wife who is a psychologist and I run a home ABA program as well as helping in my son's pre-school that is instituting an ABA progam. You cannot go wrong with this book. The fact that this book is in it's 8th edition and is used by many college programs speaks to it's strengths.I did read the one dissenting review where it lowered someone's GPA because they did not understand or test well on the material.ABA is deceptive. While it is the just the science of good learning there is a lot of skill and aptitude needed.Being a member of T.O.P.S., Intertel, Mensa, the International High IQ society to name a few I can see that this is not for everyone. Some people are good at being students, some people are good at understanding and implementing good science; with ABA you need to be in the latter group. If you want a good starting/comprehensive book with a lot of meat on the bone this is the one.

3-0 out of 5 stars Easy to use, but terribly REDUNDANT!
As a psychology student, I encounted this book in a behavioral modification course.I was not overly impressed by it, but it does have it's usefulness.

3-0 out of 5 stars not for the lay man
I'm sure this book has a great message, but I couldn't understand it.From Pierce's use of language I might have had an easier time understanding it had it been written in Egyptian heiroglyphics.I hear how amazing this book is and I'm sure it is.Just be wearing your xtra smart hat.I suggest a book by Hygeia Halfmoon instead.

4-0 out of 5 stars Some readers will love this book
The overall message of this book is important for parents and babies; we need to let babies and children grow and develop. We need to provide stimulation and new experiences. We need to keep the little ones close, provide them security and not force Western-style "independence" on them. This keeping close means a natural birth, breastfeeding, holding and talking to- not getting our children attached to things. 5-0 out of 5 stars Every parent should read it!

5-0 out of 5 stars Help in time of great loss............
This is not for those who are in the first weeks of loss. The honesty of the text can be hard to deal with while the loss is still new. However, when I needed to finally let go after the death of my grandmother in 1996, this book was a trememdous help to me.It was the catalyst that finally got my emotions flowing and helped me to process the grief.I had been walking around in the "grief bubble" for weeks and wanted to cut through the blackness surrounding me.The passages inside were the catalyst I needed to finally get my emotions flowing and process the grief when I lost my grandmother and, later, my father. This is the gift I give to friends when they are ready to move on and step out of the shadow of loss.

5-0 out of 5 stars Light, entertaining and on the mark!
This is a great little book. It's fun to read, has great cartoons and will make you laugh. Just as important, it contains concise summaries and accurate information according to Enneagram theory. It also has great tips for getting along with the different types in relationship.

5-0 out of 5 stars Funny, entertaining, yet very insightful
I have studied the Enneagram for years and take it very seriously. This book is charming and delightful in it's very basic way of explaining types on a surface level. The cartoons capture the essence of the 9 types and make understanding the Enneagram fun and easy, even for the serious scholars!I love it! It will make you laugh and create an even deeper appreciation for the 9 types.

3-0 out of 5 stars slim and a little lightweight
I wanted to like this book.I picked it up as a tool for exploring the chemistry between characters in my writing.I always identify their enneagrams during character development, and it seemed like this might inspire thought and lead to new depths of understanding the way they relate.

5-0 out of 5 stars Solace and Wisdom When You Feel No One Understands
This book has been a great comfort to me during many moments of extreme loneliness and pain. Grieving can make you feel misunderstood, misplaced and lost -- and this author truly understands. Reading this compassionate book helped me realize that all of the extreme feelings one experiences while grieving are completely normal. The many written exercises in the book can be tough to work through, but they are healing. You could easily skip all the exercises and find comfort in reading the text alone. I also found this book very helpful in understanding and dealing with people who expect you to just "pick up the pieces" and get on with liferight after the funeral. The book makes the point that Western society in general is guilty of encouraging those of us who mourn to cut our grieving process short. This book is perfect for the person grieving a loss, as a gift for a family member or friend who is grieving, or as a primer for those who are walking with someone through griefand would like some insight into the process and experience of grieving.

5-0 out of 5 stars Invaluable, infomrative, comforting, encouraging.
Understanding Grief is a compassionate, effective guide to coping with the death of a loved one. Alan Wolfelt presents more than 100 workshops a year for hospices, schools, funeral homes, community groups and service organizations and shared his expertisein helping bereaved people movetoward healing by encouraging them to explore their unique journeys intogrief and mourning. Understanding Grief covers such issues as common mythsabout grief and mourning, what to expect, taking care of oneself in thegrieving process, when additional help is needed, helping guidelines forsupport groups, and helping a friend in grief. Readers are asked specificquestions about their personal grief journeys and encouraged to thing aboutand write down their responses. Understanding Grief is an invaluable, informative, comforting, and encouraging book that is highly recommendedfor personal, counseling center, and public library grief managementcollections.

3-0 out of 5 stars Empirically useful, conceptually silly
The common claim that young children have to be taught to distinguish races is simply not true. It has been studied extensively in controlled experiments. In Race in the Making, the liberal U. of Michigan anthropology professor Lawrence A. Hirschfeld sums up the findings: "As comforting as this view may be, children, I will show in this book, are more than aware of diversity; they are driven by endogenous curiosity to uncover it. Children, I will also show, do not believe race to be a superficial quality of the world. Multicultural curricula aside, few people believe that race is only skin deep. Certainly few 3-year-olds do. They believe that race is an intrinsic, immutable, and essential aspect of a person's identity. Moreover, they seem to come to this conclusion on their own. They do not need to be taught that race is a deep property, they know it themselves already."Read more
