5-0 out of 5 stars What a wonderful book!
After purchasing a number of books that promised to deliver, this is the first one that I have found that actually does. As the parent of a six year-old little-man, I have to say that I really needed this book and I honestly believe that the material inside its pages, when applied consistently, will serve to seriously improve my son's life in due course. I am truly impressed with the level of insight brought to bear by these three authors; I applaud them on a fantastic work!
5-0 out of 5 stars wonderful & helpful
We have a very active 6 year old, and we feel he is active alert, his biggest issue is social interaction, since he has been around mostly adults his life. This bookhas common sense ideas to help a sometimes painful problem. Our son has done better in first grade. The summer using this book has helped alot! ... I am so glad I found this book!

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful and Useful
I have a now 6 year old son whom is very active. (I started with the book, The Active Alert Child by Linda Budd.) This book has wonderfully simple and overlooked ideas to a uneasy problem. I had much advancement with my son over the summer. It can be done. Ist grade is going great so far! I feel this was a key to his bettering in his social world. My son has been around adults most of his life and has a hard time relating to other children. This book made a difference. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars The Everyman's Guide:Concrete Ways to a More Complex Self
The book is a loving, enthusiastic attempt to replace religious faith (a cultural meme) with faith in evolution, and it is not without its dazzling existential insights, wherever one chooses to place one's faith.Readers interested in defining happiness will find much to digest. The author's sensibilities, however, are a dinosaur-a heavy irony in a book devoted to evolutionary psychology.(Three-martini lunches?Aren't those extinct?)An example of the rhetoric I object to follows:"But now it is possible for a drunk officer in some missile silo to press the wrong button, and then natural selection might give the prize to the cockroach."A clich, an exteme one.I wouldn't make fun of the author if I didn't think his metaphorical errors weren't related to logical fallacies in the book.
5-0 out of 5 stars Align with the Divine Inteligence
Professor Mike is on to something with this book. When you follow your positive emotions, especially Flow, you are following the guidence of the Divine Intelligence that is unfolding the universe. This is a very thought provoking and inspiring book. As a life coach, I see the practical application of Mihaly's work every day. This may be the way to a happier, more harmonious and sustainable future for our planet. Thanks Mike for showing us how to follow our Flow to build a better self and a better world.

5-0 out of 5 stars Clear and Positive Message
By discussiing the evolution of the mind, this book gives us a clear and positive message about the future direction of our species. This made gave me hope about our future even though there are many terrible things going on in the world. The author argues that we are evolving self-organizing systems and we can continue to evolve. The message is very similar to the book "The Ever-Transcending Spirit" by Toru Sato except that Sato's remarkable book explains this in more simple and straightforward language. I think we all need to learn from these types of thinkers in order to help us move toward positive change in our evolution. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent resource for introductory environmental psych..
This is an introductory book on `Environmental Psychology'.... which features more than a normal person can imagine ..... it is NOT a book related to common sociological issues on global warming, nuclear waste disposal, environmental strikes and demonstration etc...., This book is related to psychology and features on content related to the environment and the behaviour of people. It is explained in psychological perspectives and is suitable for readers with a basic depth in understanding terminology related to psychology. There are theories on relationship between environmental and behaviour, environmental perception (such as Gestalt psych etc.,) Additionally descriptions on extraneous factors of noise, temperature, barometric pressure and attitude, wind, heat and cold, physical built structures (clusters etc.,), on behaviour. 1-0 out of 5 stars Not the text book, was the study guide
I ordered the text book but was sent the study guide book.

2-0 out of 5 stars Lack of real world perspective
I would agree with the other reviews in that this book is an easy to read text with easy to understand explanations. However, there is no real world applicability. There are no case studies about real life people and how their personalities fit into their lives (i.e. type of career, choice of mate, type of friends they choose, how they view money etc.) not to mention that I think it would be interesting to see what other famous people have the same personality traits that we do (as in other texts in this subject area). In an abnormal psychology class I took, the text would refer to real studies of individuals and their psychopathologies that create their persona. To me this is what makes a great text - real life stories with real life people, what a revelation!!

5-0 out of 5 stars It just makes sense
I encourage anyone, everyone to read about these theories and apply them as best as they can to students, their own children, other children they may encounter, if you are stuck in that must-sit-still-and-listen traditional-mindset, you owe it to yourself and others to open up your mind to how kids learn differently. Would love to have this be enforced reading for certain teachers my children and I have encountered in the past.

5-0 out of 5 stars Seven intelligence Types
The Education Products Information Exchange shockingly reported, 80% of the content in school textbooks was known by students before they studied. If the content was known then education meant time consumption and rising tides of mediocrity.A national education reaction was expressed in the book "Nation at Risk" providing the following recommendation: 1) rigorous grading 2) more standardized tests 3) better textbooks 4) and adherence to English, Math, Science, Social Sciences, and Computer Science. The core curriculum was designed for students to compete against other nations but considered boring by students.

5-0 out of 5 stars At last!
At last, Piaget's concepts are presented in an enjoyable, memorable manner. For decades, teachers have drilled themselves on mastering the concepts of this famous psychologist as they diligently sought to help children make the most of their capacities to learn. This author explains many of Jean Piaget's ideas by using examples from children's literature. It's even illustrated with cartoons. Writers for children have used this book to help them connect their writing to memories of how they thought as children.

5-0 out of 5 stars Accessible Piaget
This is a very nice book that uses children's literature, popular comics, and very good writing to demystify Piaget for beginners.I tried to read parts of Piaget's How a Child Thinks and had to put it down. The authors recognize the difficulty in reading Piaget's original works and have written this book for non psychology students. This was a very useful book for a research paper on Piaget for a special education graduate course.

4-0 out of 5 stars Clever use of comics and stories for illustration
Piaget is the most influential figure in child psychology ever known. However, it can be rather daunting to plough through his monumental works. So we have books like A Piaget Primer that come to our rescue-books that help to explain the concepts in simpler, more reader-friendly terms. Of course, we cannot expect such books to do justice to the scope and breadth of the original works, but for a thin volume like A Piaget Primer, it has done reasonably well to introduce the most essential concepts of Piaget's theory on child development. Among the essential ideas are assimilation and accommodation, various stages of development, play, language development, number concept, and moral development. There is also a last chapter on the implications and applications of Piagetian theory in the education of our young. What I find most impressive about this volume is its witty use of comics such as Peanut and stories such as Alice in the Wonderland to illustrate many of the confusing concepts. Wish I had this book when I was doing my psychology course. ... Read more

I have read this book a few times.I have noticed that I feel and think differently in different places.Personaltiy traits that have not come to the surface in one place come forth in another place.Good luck happens everywhere but how it happens often depends on place. Some amusing insights are included as well.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book changed my life
This book is amazing. It provides concrete examples based on a wonderful study of a group of Harvard graduates of how different psychological coping methods helped people succeed or fail during their lives.
5-0 out of 5 stars Vaillant explores the life cycle and coping
Vaillant's long-term study of college graduates investigates the ways in which the adaptive mechanisms of various individuals help explain why some people manage to cope effectively with the challenges in their lives while others cope barely or not at all. "One can live magnificently in this life if one knows how to work and how to love.... Adaptation to life means continued growth."

5-0 out of 5 stars Viva la differences!
This is the forerunner of many contemporary works on psychological types. The mother-daughter team of Briggs & Myers devised the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) on it--devising the 4th (Judgmental-Perceptive) scale based on preferences (i.e. superior function vs. secondary function) between the iNtuitive-Sensate scale & the Thinker-Feeler scale.Jung does not address the J-P scale (it didn't exist yet). The book is written in Jung's usual rambling, erudite style with his usual quantity of incredible interspersed observations & conclusions. Some modern works are far easier to read, but many (e.g. Keirsey's "Please Understand Me") leave much out.Indeed, his assessment tool is quicker but less accurate IMHO (I used to score MBTI results for a professor doing research on MBTI's in other countries).I also took a couple of short courses (paid for by the U.S. Navy) related to the MBTI--& lots of management courses which referred to it or utilized it.It is extremely useful in improving interpersonal communications & understanding amongst co-workers, supervisors, etc.I used it with my own subordinates & found it quite valuable--people shared their results readily.Of course, there's a bit of confusion between Extrovert & Introvert--surface/laymen views can be misleading. The key is where one gets/loses one's psychic energy.Introverts get it from being alone & tend to lose it in groups; Extroverts, vice versa. But, this has nothing to do with whether one enjoys people, books, parties, etc.So, to understand the types, one must read the book.As Jung states, p. 526 "The psyche is the very thing we know least about, although it seems to be what we know best of all, & furthermore that everyone else probably understands it better than we do ourselves."Further, self-knowledge is a continuing challenge because p. 52: "The psyche creates reality every day."Also, psychological type relates not only to self, but also to society: p. 448: "Only a society that can preserve its internal cohesion and collective values, while at the same time granting the individual the greatest possible freedom, has any prospect of enduring vitality" & p. 449: "The more a man's life is shaped by the collective norm, the greater is his individual immorality."However, it is important to understand that Jung is NOT saying people ARE this type or that (implying the types are real) but that the types are a useful model for understanding human differences-- p. 493 "Reality neither consists of theories nor follows them."The sixteen types are a reasonable model for differences in accordance with Jung's scientific approach. As he states here & elsewhere--on p. 41 & on p. 494ff: "The scientific axiom known as Occam's Razor--`explanatory principles should not be multiplied beyond the necessary.'"Necessary & sufficient are required. This work is at least as relevant today as when it was written.

5-0 out of 5 stars introversion extraversion intuition sensation thinkng feelng
If you're familiar with the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) and want to know more about it then _Psychological Types_ is one title you'd certainly want to read. It is the definitive work on which the MBTI is based. In this volume Jung explains in detail what the nature of the two attitudes--introversion and extraversion--really are, as well as that of the four functions--intuition, sensation, thinking, and feeling. He also discusses various combinations of these attitudes and functions, such as Introverted-Thinking, Introverted-Feeling, Extraverted-Sensation, etc. 4-0 out of 5 stars an interesting typology....
...but a tiring survey of previous typologies that must be read before you get to Jung's version. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Families, Illness and Disability: an integrative treatment m
John Rolland's book taps into the intersectional and ever changing relationship of illness, family, and time.Rolland presents a thorough and well-organized theory and framework for clinicians to use for assesssment and treatment.Rolland reaches his purpose in the provision of a highly developed and sensitive model that surpasses other models that are stagnant and unidimensional.Rolland "educates" the reader through use of charts, visual illustrations, case examples, and sample questions. This enhances the learning experience of the reader.Rolland fortifies social work by presentation of a model that accentuates the nature of social service; looking at the broad implications of change over time and the adaptability or "stuck" that a family may experience in relation to disability or illness.he recognizes the difference in "family" and the stigma of illness or disability. His weakness comes out of the very nature of the family life cycle as a traditional role in the dominant society.Rolland finishes his masterful book with a piece de resistance; the guided experience of exploration of personal values and healthcare experiences and the impact upon professional practice.Overall, Rolland's book delivers what the author and reader expect and more. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Seminal work on attachment and loss,Technical, but readable.
Bowlby is a clear and cogent thinker who takes time to look at an important issue in tremendous detail.Taking into account much previous research and theorizing, he accepts and refutes a wide body of work in making his point. You may not agree with all of his conclusions (I may not agree with all of his conclusions), but this is not a book to be discounted lightly.Should be required reading for anyone interested in the fields of psychoanalysis and child development.

4-0 out of 5 stars important concept -caution in reviewing
Eileen Berdon's review has been attached to so many bowlby volumes now, despite ostensibly referring to "volume 2" that it needs to be read with extreme caution. 5-0 out of 5 stars Classic study of an important topic
This book was first published in 1973, and the work of it was done mostly in the 1960's by Briton Dr. Bowlby. It's "Volume Two" of atrilogy, but does not have to read along with the companion volumes. Likehis other two works on childhood, this interesting work, again, introduceshis ideas and promotes a compassionate understanding of the lives ofchildren.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars State of the Art Review of Early Conceptual Development
How children make sense of the world is one of the most compelling questions in the field of psychology, yet since Piaget's downfall it has been difficult to see how an integrative theory on the topic would be possible.By assembling contributions by some of best thinkers in the field, Rakison and Oakes have made a significant contribution to the problem, one that is likely to define the empirical agenda for the next decade. This book should be required reading for all developmental psychologists.

5-0 out of 5 stars Into the minds of babes
Ever wondered how we know what we know? This book is one of the best collections I have read that addresses this issue. The book was required reading for one of my grad courses in early cognitive development and each week we would read one or two chapters. Although some of the earlier chapters are a bit slow going, I found it overall to be an excellent collection of older research and theories as well as more up to date ideas. It holds together really well and gives you a idea of the bigger picture: what mechanisms are involved in concept learning, when do babies start to learn about objects and things around them, and so on. Every big "name" in the field is included, as well as some more up-and-coming younger folk. There are also some nice debates between the various authors in the book who have radically different views on how babies learn about the world; its clear that some of these researchers don't agree at all! All in all, I recommend this volume to scholars, students, and anyone who is interested in understanding the beginnings of our mental life. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Your Song
I have read a few of Sam Keens books up to now and I am always amazed that he can write about philosophy, psychology or mythology with such compassion. "Your Mythic Journey", on the other hand, is not so much a book, rather a guided tour. Originally published in 1973 under a different title, "Telling Your Story: A Guide to Who You Are and Who You Can Be," was changed later when mythology became the buzzword for intellectuals. Sam Keen has worked closely with mythologist Joseph Campbell in his later years in which modern psychology was married with mythology. 5-0 out of 5 stars A gem of a book, deep but compassionate.
This is a brilliant book for those who believe in journalling as atherapeutic path. The authors adress life's main conflicts, and structurethe basic questions to be answered by the reader in terms of JosephCampbell's work. This book combines intellectual rigor with heartfeltwarmth, in a combination so rarely seen in similar books. I love thissubject and own a lot of material on it, but I find that many other volumeseither fall in the sirupy, newagey category or are dry and academic. This aslim book, but it is worth every cent if you actually work with it. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Valuable guide on a little-known tool for personality assessment and change.
There are dozens of books available on handwriting analysis. This one differs in its clear and concise description of the specific personality traits corresponding to specific letters and then, most importantly, showing how to optimize one's behavior through specific handwriting changes. In other words, "build it (the desired behavior), and it will come."
4-0 out of 5 stars Your Handwriting Can Change Your Life
The book is very interesting and fun. It also helped me get in touch with many areas I can improve upon not just handwriting. The author shares insights into character and gives you the inspiration to change with the stokes of a pen. It surprised me how well I identified with the traits it described that corresponded to my handwriting characteristics. I highly recommend it for anyone who wants to improve their handwriting and their life.

5-0 out of 5 stars YES!
In the early 1980's my mentor wasvery interested in handwriting analysis and often wondered if we changed our handwriting, would we then be able to change our lives? Now,Vimala Rogers answers YES, (if you practice) with her book Your Handriting Can Change Your Life! Itis user friendly, seasoned with anecdotes and practical suggestions. The book's guidance has become an important part of my daily enrichment routine.I had only practiced my new signature for a few days when I had to sign a credit card receipt. For the first time in my life, the clerk said, "What a wonderful signature!" A small miracle is still a miracle! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars NOT JUST FOR PARENTS
Every literate person should read this book. It will help you understand humanity, your culture, and your own story in life. I can't recommend it highly enough. Just read it.
2-0 out of 5 stars Too verbose
The insights Jean Liedloff gained while spending more than two years living in the jungle with Stone Age Indians are fascinating -- if you can discern them through her diffuse writing style. It's a really difficult book to get through because of the author's "Why use five words when twenty-five will do?" writing style. I opened my copy to a random page and found one sentence with 68 words. It's dense stuff. The good news is that the wonderful book Our Babies, Ourselves by Meredith Small has many of the same ideas but is a much more pleasant read.

5-0 out of 5 stars One more that proves parents should trust their instincts
After reading "Our Babies, Our Selves" and "Attachment Parenting," I turned to this book as one more that proves parents should trust their instincts in raising their babies. My husband, who doesn't usually read the plethora of parenting books I bring to the nightstand, was interested in the Yequana tribe and cites Liedloff's experiences as proof we're doing something right. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Very Inspiring
A very inspiring book, very accessible, and easy to grasp ideas (... for parents, teachers as well as the kids). I like that you can easily choose a meditation according to the age group, and also read about childrens experiences after having done the meditation.
