5-0 out of 5 stars Brought me a New Perspective on my Life
I read this book seven years ago and it still stays with me. This is a very very important book and should be read by everyone in education. I grew up in a shcool district that didn't know the meaning of the word "gifted." Teachers always told me to be quiet because I was "making the other kids feel bad" with my intelligence. I ended up being so bored with life because I never had anywhere near enough mental stimulation. What the author describes in this book helped me understand so many things about my childhood and adulthood and how my "giftedness" and the failure of those around me to accept it has affected my life. So many things finally made sense to me that didn't for decades. I agree with the author that by negelcting "gifted" people, young and old, we are wasting valuable resources. It is not that "gifted" people are better than others, but we need to recognize that they have different needs. This book is fabulous and helped me tremendously.

5-0 out of 5 stars How-to gifted guide, but for grown-ups
When I bought this book from Amazon, I thought that it was just reminiscences of adults who had grown up gifted, and bought it for that. However, it is more fun than that. It is a genuine gifted guide book like the books written about gifted children, with one difference: it is about the grown-up world. So there is information on how to survive the workplace as a gifted adult, giving lots of "yep, that's me" feelings, showing that behaviour that could be considered immature (frequent job-swapping, doing stuff at the last minute, surfing while working) are all valid survival techniques in a world that is not an exact fit.

4-0 out of 5 stars To better realize our abilities
The author looks at a number of issues that affect how people realize their talents, or fail to do so. As a teacher of gifted teens and a writer and poet herself, she knows how important issues such as recognition, attitude and encouragement can be.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good for Beginners
Pat Allen gives an informed and moving account of her personal experiences and how art used therapeutically has helped her work through different life challenges. However, being an artist and pursuing the field of art therapy I found her approaches and explanations a bit simplistic and not challenging for those already initiated in the use of art materials and techniques. A section for those with art backgrounds, or a follow-up book, might be helpful in this regard. A good pick for beginners, but not for those already conversant and comfortable with techniques and materials. Her resourse lists are helpful and informative. I would have liked to see works by patients of Ms. Allen's also included, with comments. This might have made the reading more challenging and interesting.

5-0 out of 5 stars a wealth of ideas
The author reveals much of her own journey through painfull life experiences and how art expressions helped her to heal.5-0 out of 5 stars Moving and effective
A very moving and effective book with seamless ties between art therapy and personal experiences - this book easily reaches out to anybody, artist or not, therapist or not. It's for the common man and its honesty and fluent accounts make it extremely accessible. ... Read more

Editorial Review

At the age of 38, John D. MacArthur, a destitute high-school dropout, borrowed $2,500 to buy the Bankers Life & Casualty Company of Chicago; eight years later he'd made a million dollars. At the time of his death in 1978 he was the second-richest man in America and "notoriously tightfisted." But he left most of his two-and-a-half-billion-dollar estate in the form of the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation, with only these instructions to his board of trustees: "I figured out how to make the money, you boys figure out how to spend it." Thus the MacArthur Prize, also known as the "genius grant," was born. The award cannot be applied for, and it is not limited to any particular field of interest. Its purpose "is to promote those leaps of creative thinking that may occur when gifted people are left to their own devices." For Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The best book I've found on creativity - an easy, useful, insightful read
This is my favorite book on creativity. It does an excellent job diving into the subject and coming up with realistic and practical answers about the creative process. It sends a good message that there isn't magic in the creative process - that creativity comes most from hard work and dedication - something that anyone is capable of.Its also an easy quick read which increases its attractivness and usefullness by ehnancing the underlying message that creativity isn't complicated and available to anyone to achieve.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very worthwhile!Relevant to artists, scholars, scientists
Shekerjian tackles a tough topic and succeeds in bringing it down to earth."Geniuses," or MacArthur Fellows, at any rate, are humanized here. They aren't struck by lightning, or born with great discoveries. They are hard workers and they have personality traits well-suited to creative endeavors.
5-0 out of 5 stars The How is in the Doing
"How are creative people able to look at the same thing as everybody else but see something different?" Denise Shekerjian relying on interviews with forty MacArthur Foundation Fellowship winners tries to answer this in "Uncommon Genius." The Fellows, all having demonstrated creative genius across a variety of pursuits, provide a glimpse inside their own experience with the creative process.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Masterpiece, sadly forgotten, worth reviving
Recently, I have read a lot of books on Creativity and Innovation. My big surprise is that virtually none of them mention Koestler's The Act of Creation. This is unfortunate because this book is probably the most authoritative examination of creativity. Attention to this classic is worth reviving.
4-0 out of 5 stars The intersection of lines of thought
This is the first of Koestler's big three serious science books. The second is "The Sleepwalkes", on the contribution of Copernicus, Kepler and Galileo. The third is "The Ghost in the Machine", which contains a critique of behaviorist psychology and Koestler's theory to account for the apparent self-destructiveness of human nature.5-0 out of 5 stars A rare masterpiece connecting the dots of insightful thought
A fascinating read for the person who steps back and wonders - it gives glimpses and answers through an integrated bodyof research and agraceful and insightful fireside chat about it all. One of my all time favourite books. I can hardly wait to read it again! ... Read more

I came to this precious book in the 3M Library in Caracas while I was working there, the funny thing is that there was the most un-creative work enviroment I ever seen in my life!!
5-0 out of 5 stars A must-have book in your Creativity & Innovation Library & card deck on your desk top!
I am a raving fan of Roger von Oech's creative work as embodied in his books & card decks, namely: 1-0 out of 5 stars Suckers Will Buy Anything
I was a huge fan of von Oech's "A Whack in the Side of the Head." That is why I was bitterly disappointed by "A Kick in the Seat of the Pants." It is ironic that a book about creativity is almost a carbon copy of its predecessor. "A Kick.." has at least 50 percent of the text and cartoons from "A Whack." I feel robbed, as this book is little more than a revised edition of "A Whack."

5-0 out of 5 stars Inspiring the natural artist in us all!
This book inspires the reader to move beyond limitations.Jan Phillips makes us see that every person has creativity... has the ability to create something of value... straight from our Creator... God. Wonderful!

5-0 out of 5 stars I thought. Then I felt and cried tears of triumph.
Jan Phillips took me on a journey I had never been. I had sensed this part of my inner being, but stayed out, afraid of the power I may find. Then my eyes got wider and wider as I turned each page and suddenly, without being conscious of my change, I trusted her honest voice and slowly let go of fears that had restrained me from being and creating more. I became deeper and truer, because Jan was deep and true. And my writing and art expanded. 5-0 out of 5 stars A Gentle and Powerful Approach

Reading the book for a masters level creativity class so I started out a skeptic. While much of the reading in the class has turned out to be very interesting, this book just hasn't struck any chords for me.
4-0 out of 5 stars working artist
This is the second Julia Cameron book I have read. It is very much like Artist's Way except it is for the artist in the work place. All of Cameron's books talk about the artist within but it is for those who are looking for self. Self is what you are going to find. It is getting rid of what is unimportant and focusing in on the important making a complete and happier person. I am not quite done with this book but have devoured it and shared it as I did with her first book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Artists can be thriving (not starving) artists
After completing the self-study program with Julia Cameron's Artist's Way ... this work-oriented book helps artistic and creative souls find a way to breath life and express their creative fire on the job. Cameron's analogy of the dragon is a dep metaphor to the fears that stop us from being our true selves. Instead of bottling up all the intense energy ... Riding The Dragon ... draws out our intensity with constructive excercies, wisdom, and a proper channel to achieve positive results. Cameron is one of the best informal writing guides for all of us with a voice were excavating. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars very infoormative.
I found this book extremly informative. The authors have covered several topics, including a lot of intresting research. The were many examples that were appropriate and useful.Obviously lot of information can make a few people dizzy.I donot think it is a problem with the book.Though the presentation was not impressive the content is excellent.I plan to read this book a few more times.
4-0 out of 5 stars A treasure of insights to be uncovered by readers
This is a special book. The authors categorize different modalities of creative activities into 13 different components, and then discuss them in detail, in the format of listing dozens and dozens of quotations from the creative people in the arts and the sciences. The large amount of quotations, subsumed under different categories, is the valuable service done by the authors. How to extract from those gems of quotations something whose significance goes beyond the categorial subsumption is something the authors do not do much. So, it is quite typical that taking away the quotations and descriptions from a chapter, you may often find only one or two pages (sometimes even one or two passages) really contributed by the authors as their interpretations and elaborations of the underlying signficance of the modalities. For the readers who want ready-made guidelines on creative thinking, they might be a little disappointed. But for those who enjoy digesting the insights by themselves and form their own interpretative constructions, this book is a good one.
4-0 out of 5 stars Informative and Lacks Inspiration
This is not a how-to-book.The Root-Bernsteins present thirteen characteristics of what they view as genius. With each chapter they list examples from art, literature, and a variety of other disciplines.I have never encountered references to Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and Bruno Schulz within two pages of each other. The book lacks enthusiasm.Someone like Desmond Morris or Steven Pinker could of made this material really compelling.Still this book is more insightful than one that encourages someone to visualize certain object to make you an Einstein. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars CLASS TOOL
ANOTHER ART TEACHER HAD RECOMENDED THIS BOOK TO ME. I HELP TEACH HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS. I LOVE THE VARIETY OF LESSONS, THE IN DEPTH TEACHING AND EXAMPLES GIVEN. (THEIR ARE A FEW LESSONS THAT ARE TOO ADVANCED FOR SOME OF THE STUDENTS, BUT I MYSELF HAVE FUN WITH THOSE.)

4-0 out of 5 stars If you like The Artist's Way ...
-this is a good companion to it. He's a bit verbose occasionally but gives you difference insights on the same material. The "creative encounters" are exercises to increase creativity and can be used alone or with a group. This is an old book, but I'd seen it cited several times. Still well worth a read if you're interested in creativity and how to open people to being creative.

5-0 out of 5 stars No No Secon-Hand Art
This is one of the most inspiring books you can read if you are an art student or just interested in art. Peter London tells the artists to go out and find themselves, make their own art, an experiment with encounter. Encounters are excises that are designed to help you know yourself and find out maybe unknown things about you. Since, he is an art therapist, the exercises are very creative and geared to giving you incite into how you can go out and create your own art based on what you have learned from encountrs with self.

5-0 out of 5 stars Demystifies creativity, and a fun read
Brining big ideas to my job is now easier than ever.In an entertaining manner this book helps to codify a process that is almost impossible to contain and explain. The author first breaks down the creative "process" then gives the reader easy to learn, simple to use thinking tools to help jump start the imagination when you need to.I've used many of the suggestions and methods and they have helped me go beyond the same old ideas in my category. My supervisor is amazed at my new found resource. The chapters about brainstorming, selling and managing for more creativity could have been books of their own.I've seen nothing like it in other books on creative thinking.I'm not sure why this book has been bashed by a few readers.Maybe advertising types believe they already know this. I've been on the business side of health care for 17 years and this is a very refreshing, effective way to think.

4-0 out of 5 stars Interesting, if pretentious, look at Lorca's 'Duende'
This book allegedly sets out to discover where inspiration for art comes from. In order to do this, the author focuses heavily on the work of Federico Garcia Lorca and his theories of Duende - a dark primal emotional state from which Lorca drew much inspiration. The back cover of the book gives a vast listing of other artists, authors and poets whose names are thrown out teasingly. Unfortunately, people like Hemingway, Plath, Blake and Rimbaud are only briefly touched upon in the book, while heavy emphasis is placed on Lorca's work. 3-0 out of 5 stars I'm not sure
I started reading it, and found myself to be lost.I felt like there was a book I should have read before this one.It seems like a continuation of something else. But, it is probably just not for me.

5-0 out of 5 stars Entering the nether world of inspiration
Flashes of inspiration, of originality, of that conjoining of synapses that transmit creativity to the mind/eye/hand/soul of the receiver and bring forth significant art have been assigned to a Muse, a connection with some other place, always indefineable until this eloquent little book by the intoxicatingly intelligent Edward Hirsch. As erudite as this well researched book is, it is more a companion to the learning eye and mind, much like his other forays into how to read poetry, etc. Using the centuries-old concept of the "daimon" or demon as best illustrated thorugh Lorca's "duende", Hirsch spends the first half of his book drawing us into a familiarity and asks us to be vulnerable to the concept of a mysterious spirit that enters from the bowels of the earth the body of the writer, poet, musician, composer, dancer, and induces creativity. His examples and quotations from a wide range of artists are convincing. And just when we feel sure that we understand the creative source, Hirsch takes us a step further and discusses the Rilke belief that inspiration comes down from the heavens as an angel to soar through the mind of the receptive artist and provides that out of body, inexplicable touch that we call creativity. With both sources - one emerging for the bowels of the earth as a dark demon and the other descending through the firmament to transiently rest inside the soul - Hirsch addresses just what is "creativity" and how we can better find it and embrace it. This small book speaks volumes to artists and readers alike. This is not a "self help" book, but rather a source of inspiration as powerful as any canvas or poem or symphony. Read and improve your connection with art. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Interesting, but sometimes confusing.
Exiting Nirvana" is a mother's account of her autistic daughter, Jessy, and Jessy's life from her teens until the time the book was was published, when Jessy was in her early 40s. I found that the way the chapters of the book were presented was a little bit odd. Instead of starting with Jessy's teens and moving forward, showing her progress that way, the author divides the chapters into aspects of Jessy's behavior and life: i.e., the way Jessy talks and the ways she thinks. I found that some of the chapters seemed to be haphazardly written. Ideas didn't seem to flow easily from one paragraph to the next and were hard to follow. The author spent a lot of time discussing Jessy's obsession with numbers and this portion was especially confusing. I wasn't sure exactly what point the author was trying to get across...other than the fact that Jessy was obsessed with numbers and tended to look at the world that way. Later chapters, however, were quite well written, and I think the author had easier time discussing Jessy's life when Jessy herself was easier for the author to understand.4-0 out of 5 stars Great to learn more about autism
Existing Nirvana: a daughter's life with autism, by Clara Claiborne Park, is a book about Jessy, the author's daughter, growing up with autism.Although it would seem to be hard growing up with autism, rather than focusing on the negative, Park shares the story of her daughter focusing on her differences from `normal' people in society and stressing the remarkable progress Jessy has made despite her abnormalities. This progress has allowed her to mentally and socially move more and more from her own world, `Nirvana', into the world in which everyone else operates.By giving an account of Jessy's life, the reader becomes more aware of the disability and its characteristics. The book focuses on they way individuals with autism think and even their speech. The speech portion of the story is more focused on Jessy specifically because her speech was worse than most individuals with autism.Park uses journals and pictures Jessy has drawn to looking deeper into her speech, thought process, portraits, and her current living.Through these different aspects, the reader becomes enlightened on the type of characteristics that define autism.5-0 out of 5 stars A touching, loving memoir
Clara Claiborne Park describes her daughter Jessy, an autistic woman in her 40's and discusses how her daughter has changed in the years since she wrote The Siege: A Family's Journey into the World of an Autistic Child, which ended when Jessy was 8. The book is an eloquent argument for the education of autistic children, and a detailed glimpse into the family life of an autistic person. Park describes different aspects of their life in a matter-of-fact manner-- no whining or victimhood here. Her love of Jessy is obvious, and there is no complaining, but it becomes obvious through the descriptions of Jessy's behavior andpersonality that their life has been difficult. It's also obvious how well Jessy has been cared for and loved. It's refreshing to read this book because the Park family just seems so, so good, and that's unusual to come across these days.Parks is a great writer-- the book is intelligent and readable. I'd recommend this book for any family with an autistic child, and for anyone who is just interested in thinking about how love, personality, and intelligence relate ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Knowledge Deployment 101 - 103
Artful Persuasion is a compilation of tips, tricks and wisdom on how to persuade others, change their minds, align, and influence people favourably.
4-0 out of 5 stars Good, yet lacking detail on some vital topics
Like other books on the market, this book offers examples and case studies of successful professionals. Mills emphasizes the critical value of winning the attention of your audience or customer.Would like to have seen a bit more on developing the right verbal skills to permit one's message to be heard in a world where everything demands our attention.
5-0 out of 5 stars very good book
This book is written in an authoritative tone and has some incredible insight into how people in the last century were able to influence the masses.

5-0 out of 5 stars Supplies for the Muse

Enter Supplies from Cameron. A concoction of advice, strategies, and common toolkits to keep our artistic souls pure and our muse shielded from the various Crazymakers out there. Must have!

2-0 out of 5 stars Cameron's other titles are more useful to you as a writer
Julia Cameron's books are the only companions that keep me from feeling stuck and isolated in a writer's life. "The Artist's Way" and "The Sound of Paper" are fixtures on my bedside table because she's truthful, sensible, and uplifting. ...And that's why I'm disappointed in this book. It falls very short of the mark.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastico!
With the world of business finally coming around to the understanding that true profits come from creatively solving problems and providing unique and interesting solutions - many of us are stuck in corporate vacuum trying to get out of the box (or bag). This clever little shot-of-brilliance-in-a-book is just what so many need to unplug and play with our naturally creative selves.Badonsky provides so many unlocking exercises you can't help but to regain your creative self.
5-0 out of 5 stars GREAT FUN
This book is not only for artists, but for anyone wanting to get the most out of life and live more creatively. There are ideas to inspire you, deal with your inner critic, face fears, learn not to take yourself so seriously, etc. This book is so much fun. I laughed out loud many times, and had to explain to my husband what was so funny.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Book Worth Reading
Despite the catchy title and Badonsky's sense of humor, this book is far from fluff.Because I make my living as a writer, paying rent and buying groceries depend on being able to tap into my creativity every day. Some days are more difficult than others. Some days, if I didn't laugh, I'd cry. This book helped me to lighten up and allow my creativity to flow, rather than trying to force it out of of myself.I loved Arnold, the bodyguard. He reminded me that my tender, young ideas do need protection.I recommend this book to others who create professionally as well as those who are exploring creativity as a way of self expression. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Inside the mind of autism
My son has autism and uses a high-tech communication device. This book challenged me to look at the world from my son's perspective and helped me better understand this disorder. It also proves that individuals without verbal communication can still have a lot "to say".

4-0 out of 5 stars Interesting insight into Autism
I've only read one other book about Autism. That was "Speed of Dark", which was fiction from the point of view of an autistic. It provided fascinating insight into the viewpoint of an autistic, but again it was fiction. It is worth noting that the author was the mother of an Autistic.
4-0 out of 5 stars Extremly touching
I loved Tito every moment I read the book and have immense respect for the dedication, persistence and effort of his mother Soma. She seems to be a very strong woman to handle it all alone. But I have to mention this that I hated the part where Tito writes he was hit hard until he paid attention. I have seen and heard of many successful people who cannot ever forget their childhood abuse by their parents even though they were for good reasons. This is a very wrong concept used earlier and is not encouraged any more by many many people these days. Even though hitting might prove right for some reason it does a permanent damage to one's inner self. ... Read more
