4-0 out of 5 stars Interviewing for Solutions
Great strengths based approach to working with families and young people from vulnerable communities.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book for All
"Interviewing for Solutions" is wonderful. I would encourage anyone interested in Solution-Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT) to read this book. "Interviewing for Solutions" supplies the reader with a overview of SFBT, as well as demonstrating SFBT in action via examples of interviews with various clients. Regardless of the counseling orientation one takes when assisting clients, the book provides valuable tools for all! In addition to this book, I would highly suggest obtaining a few of the lecture tapes of Berg, de Shazer and etc from the Brief Family Therapy Center.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book on Interviewing--Period!
Although solution focused-brief therapy is considered a paradigm, this book could very well be used in any introductory, microskills class, and it should. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Some ideas about the Book
This book is a very useful and practical tool for practitioner in the fild of counselling - especially the assessment instruments. It also covers topics that are recurring in difficult maritalrelationships, such as resolvong solvable and perpetual problems.I find the book very resourceful, and full of good, practical advice. This book is a great help in my practice as a marriage counselor.

5-0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive overview!
This book by John Gottman deals with nearly all aspects of marital therapy: myths and mistakes, assessment methods, and interventions.5-0 out of 5 stars Profound view of marital therapy
This remarkable book advances the understanding of what works in marital and, I believe, family therapy.Early chapters review marital theories, and how they lived up to their assumptions when tested through welldesigned research.Gottman presents a very respectful attitude toward themarital couple and emphasizes the importance of honoring the goal ofestablishing and supporting the couple's self sufficiency. The chaptertitled Buffering Children From Marital Conflict is an insightfulintroduction into how to help parents develop the tools to strenghten theirchildren's resilience. As a person who has worked with at risk childrenand families for 17 years and has recently completed a masters degree inmental health counseling, I have read my share of family counseling books. From Satir to Whitaker to Lang to Minuchen(sp)... (you get the point). This is by far the best book on the subject! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Wary of the negative reviews
I found this book to be both scholarly and highly scientific in its methods..the few people I know that haven't liked it are, unfortunately batterers or victims in denial. Judge for yourself.
3-0 out of 5 stars Written for Men by Men?
Advice to women by men on battering doesn't exactly make good sense since few men have lived the lives of oppression that women live when subjected to abusive relationships, and couldn't possibly relate in a meaningful way. Simply being human isn't enough to observe characteristics meaningful to the opposite sex - rather like a woman trying to provide a role model for male children on how to be males. It's comforting to know that all battering falls into two predominant types, however, using dog types as the analogy. I wonder whether many breeds of dog justfies the categorization. It's possible that characterized all males as forms of dog breeds might be more accurate to characterize their personality, being the territorial animals they are, even when they are neutered.

5-0 out of 5 stars Survivors find it helpful as do students of psychology
I happened to have met Dr. Jacobson at his lecture for this book a year before he died.It was fascinating the research he and Dr. Gottman did.I was so mesmerized by it that I used references from the lecture and book in my thesis. My thesis is now published in my book entitled Absent Hearts, Missing Pieces which can be found here at Amazon.com as well.I am a survivor of over 20 years. But don't listen to me.Go to my website called Artemis: A Site for Survivors of Domestic Violence and ask the women there. survivorsofdv.website-works.comMany times this book has been brought up as a topic on the message board.Survivors can relate and appreciate some validation of what their batterer was.Perhaps there is more to this than two categories of Cobra and Pit Bull, but it is a start in unlocking the mind of the batterer. And when we can do this, we can begin to start producing comprehensive treatment programs.Hmmm. Probably like the one I mention in my thesis. Hint hint... ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars The book should not be recommended for University programs
I am very disappointed, could not force myself to finish it! This book should not be recommended for University programs. It is biased, full of stereotyping, and has "popular", rather than scientific references (with all my respect to Daniel Goldman's Emotional Intelligence commercial success). Textbooks should be professional and free of political agendas.

1-0 out of 5 stars Caustic Personal Agenda
I actually looked forward to reading this text, but upon furthr examination, found it to be a very "glass-half-empty" approach to the family life cycle. It is blatantly obvious that the 2 authors have their own political agenda to cram down our throats.Their vitrolic accusations against males, whites, Christians, etc. insight me to become an advocate for those they discriminate against - to expose their hypocritic instructions to be respectful, empathetic and flexible toward others. And by the way, for "experts" to use the term "homophobic" is a clinical and education travesty. To discriminate against those who do not condone the lifestyle by calling them names is simply politically correct, immature, and evidence of their agenda.

1-0 out of 5 stars The authors' agenda overrides all else
I used this book, which came highly recommended, to teach a graduate-level course in Family Therapy. At first glance it seemed like a useful text, having earned a great deal of praise from other professors. However, the book was a disappointment to both myself and my students.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Scientific Approach to Change
In the thorougly revised edition of the "Heroic Client", Duncan, Miller, and Sparks now advocate "A Revolutionary Way to Improve Effectivness." They invite mental health professionals, of any discipline, to partner with clients in all aspects of their care and abandon the search for the best therapeutic process or evidence-based therapy, and instead, focus on client-based outcome feedback to improve effectivness by an incredible 65 percent!4-0 out of 5 stars Provocative Insights for Corporate Training and Development
A provocative book that is relevant to the European market although it is written in the context of the US where psychotherapy practice is enmeshed in disputes about status and funding that can sideline the needs of the clients. US psychotherapy seems to be fragmented by internal battles about models and techniques, while fighting a general action to resist medical domination from perceived second-status to psychiatry, and the siren-like influence of Big Pharma and the financial pressures of managed care.5-0 out of 5 stars To a different approach to helping people
Barry Duncan and Scott Miller are with Marc Hubble directors of The Institute for the Study of Therapeutic Change (...). These people play an important role in improving and renewing therapy. In this book, the authors explain how therapy has for too long been been neglecting, ignoring, and depersonalizing clients, by its over-emphasis on methods and techniques, by following the medical model, by its emphasis on pathology, by hegemony of biological approaches, and so on. 4-0 out of 5 stars A multigenerational, intrapersonal practical counseling tool
Family systems are facinating, dynamic, and multidimensional.Psycologists and counselors have developed systems for studying them.M. Bowen and Systems Theory are well linked to the development and use ofgenograms in family and individual therapy, for instance. Genogramare used in American Association of Marriage and Family Thereapistsclinical training and supervision programs, and are an important tool inthe clinical process.Medical schools and practices, genetic counselors, and even business and organizational settings find them useful.Genograms, though, have their limitations which the authors summarize well, proceeding to make a clear case for what they have developed: theMultilayered Focused Genogram (MFG).They make a graphic comparison ofcurrent genograms as normal X-ray exam, to MFG system which for them islike the hospital MRI exam, providing much more in-depth information.Actually, the MFG is a combination of the Basic Genogram, Family Map andTime Line, amplified with one or more Focused Genograms. It is aninclusive system of assessing issues in all aspects of a client's personaland multi-generational history as well as present day circumstances.I appreciate the format of the book for its clarity. In the first third, the authors address succinctly each of the three main components of MFGsusing vignettes and rationals for collecting and organizing so much dataabout the client and his or her family system. They provide practicalapplications and diagrams for the clinician's immediate use. The lasttwo thirds of the book address Focused Genograms, outlining a surprisingfifty plus possible topics of focus, and concentrate a chapter on the majorones: attachments, emotions, anger (as an important, specificallyindependent focus), gender, sexuality, romantic love and culture.Thefirst part of each of these last chapters is a guide to the constructionand uniqueness of each, while the last half gives the basic theoreticalconcepts and research that supports the inclusion of the particular topicsfor each Focused Genogram. Though the book does not pretend to be acritical review of the literature, the text is peppered with references, each chapter offers suggested reading, and includes a good bibliography ofover 225 books as well as comments on two computerized genogram programs. Neither is the book a complete exploration of the topical areas but ratheran strong overview, and therefore, would be useful to graduate students (incounseling, psychology, genetics, medicine, or business) or anyone whowanted to upgrade their current use of genograms to incorporate thismeaningful and extensive MFG tool into their counseling practice.Focused Genograms kept my interest throughout, and it was well worth mytime.I will make good use of the practical list of suggested question itcontains in every chapter with my clients starting right away. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Recapturing the spirit
James Loder's book 'The Logic of the Spirit: Human Development in Theological Perspective' is a fascinating text, for it helps to re-integrate the idea of spiritual development (without becoming bogged down by denominationalist views on what that development should be) as an integral part of human psychological development. There has been the trend in the last century to separate out religious and spiritual matter from psychology--often for good cause. However, to negate the importance of this part of the human being when it is so clear throughout human history that it belongs as a centre-piece, has been a failure on the part of modern psychology, and that failure is beginning to be addressed by work such as Loder's.5-0 out of 5 stars Difficult but beautiful
James Loder was one of those people who obviously knew God.I was privileged to be in one of his last classes before his recent death, and it was obvious that this was one of the truly Godly men in this world. This text was the basis of his course on Faith and Human development, a study of the full picture of what it means to be and become human. He develops an understanding of human development from the perspective that the reality of God and his Spirit actually makes an impact in who we are as people.Rather than divorcing the religious from humanity, he develops a study which incorporates this essential aspect of who we are as full human beings. It is not an easy read, but is certainly an essential text for anyone seeking to understand how we become who we are.One of the more important books I've read so far in my seminary career. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A father is key to understanding choices and roadblocks in a career
The Father Factor: How Your Father's Legacy Impacts Your Career comes from a psychologist who maintains the influence of a father is key to understanding choices and roadblocks in a career. Both positive and negative impacts are surveyed, from a passive or absent father's influence to understanding how destructive messages translate into workforce action or inaction. The 'what you can do about it' section is critical for change and a successful career approach.
5-0 out of 5 stars Daddy Dearest
This is a WOW of a book. Fathers are the stereotypical breadwinners in the household. How are father's careers evolve infuence how ours do as well. We become our parents patterns if we are not careful. For women, this is especially poignant, and for those of us whose fathers demanded results-oriented performance .... looking back ... it really was a blessing in disguise. Kudos to all the men who pushed their daughters to succeed and fobade them to date in childhood.

I found "The Father Factor" by Stephan B. Poulter, very interesting and certainly helpful in analyzing my behavior towards my colleagues and the politics of the work place.
