5-0 out of 5 stars Heartbreaking and beautiful!10 stars!
This is one of the best things I've read in ages.Terribly sad, but not the kind of sad where you have to stop reading -- on the contrary, I couldn't STOP reading.Certainly anyone who's ever dealt with aging, ailing parents and all the accompanying sibling problems that arise, should read this. I wish I could write like Ms. Montgomery.Since I can't, I want to read everything else she's written.

5-0 out of 5 stars Gorgeous writing/filled with heart and place
I loved this book. One of the things that struck me most profoundly is its sense of place. Montgomery makes New England almost a character of its own... the smells, sights, sounds, as well as in the utterly particular cadences of the way the characters speak and relate to each other. Like a painter who is a genius with "white space," she lets us feel the subtext in the silences, and the raw feelings inside the humor, without ever "telling" us what to think or feel. Quite simply, this book has heart.

5-0 out of 5 stars Highly recommended
The Things Between Us is as rich and moving a story as I've read in a long time, memoir or otherwise. Ms. Montgomery has a surgeon's eye for crisp, telling detail and an enviable ear for the rhythms of real speech. Most especially I applaud her for avoiding the trap fallen into by so many memoirists who believe that they must maintain a taut, elevated drama throughout their entire story. Given such a habit can we be surprised that the form has received so much scrutiny of late? Ms. Montgomery clearly understands that even with stories as dramatic as the death of a beloved parent, the truth of the small moments, the day to day, is just as important. By capturing those simple, quiet interludes between the fights and the dire prognoses, she is able to build a real, honest and, finally, deeply affecting story. My own father died in 2005, and I found that each time I entered The Things Between Us I was transported not only to the Massachusetts of the Montgomerys, but also to the living room, and finally the hospital room, of my own father. And that is a rare treasure indeed. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Must Have Book!!!!!
This book is so awesome!!! It has so much great info in it. It is a book that is so easy to read before you know it your done. It makes you really think about your relationship prior affair and after affair. What went wrong and were it went wrong at. It offers so many was to open up communication and how to talk to one another without fighting. There isnt enough things to say how AWESOME this book is. Must have for anyone in a bad situation. It has a questionnaire at the end that both partners can do and an agreement for both partners to read and sign. It helps lift your spirit and makes you think that this isnt the end of the world and that you can make it through. I have a new found hope for my marriage and a new attitude towards everything. I am looking at the bigger picture and the brighter side of things. I am alive and I still have my family and my husband. We go to thearpy and with all the great info in this book just put what we have learned into action and hopefully great results will be the outcome. Get this book you wont regret it!!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Highly recommended!
I suvived my ordeal by following the advice in Dr. Harley's book as well as on his web site www.marriagebuilder.com. I had an affair several months ago. I was totally confused, devastated, depressed, and thought about suicide. I tried looking for help but most people are not sympathetic toward the wayward spouse. I learned about Dr. Harley and was comforted to know that he understands the wayward spouse's feeling and point of view. I followed his advice regarding total separation from my lover valuable- it was the hardest thing in the world to do- I loved him and the thought of never communicating with him devastated me. But I am so glad in retrospect that I lived throught the withdrawel. I now have a better relationship with my husband, and after three months of not communicating with my lover, I can now see the affiar for the mistake that it was. I am very grateful to Dr. Harley- his iron-clad policy regarding total separation with my lover was absolutely right!
5-0 out of 5 stars Realistic, practical advice
I bought this book because I have no less than THREE different friends whose marriages are suffering the effects of affairs--all of them emotional, not physical. Some of the other reviews cite that the examples are unrealistic, but I found that many, many of the details (including the long-suffering faithful husband) are exactly what my friends are experiencing.Furthermore, this book helped me gain a little insight into why two of the cheating spouses have expressed no regret--that the faithful spouse needs to honestly assess how he/she may have contributed to the marriage being vulnerable in the first place. This book has been helpful as I have sought to help my friends, for different parts have been directly applicable to their situations and have provided practical help. There are no happy endings--yet--but the clear advice in this book is helping them to gain some sense of clarity as they hear that there are others with similar situations, feelings and struggles. It is also helping them gain stability as the book gives specific suggestions on steps to take.Note that at no point in the book do the authors guarantee that a marriage will be rebuilt. It is a given assumption throughout the book that a marriage can only be rebuilt if both husband and wife are willing to try. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars From the author of, Raising Our Children, Raising Ourselves
As the author of Raising Our Children, Raising Ourselves, I find What Do You Really Want for YOur Children to be nice, but not on the leading edge. Wayne Dyer is always full of stories and joy which is inspiring. The book is a fine introduction to being a parent who does not follow the old authoriterian ways. If you are inspired, don't stop here. Read other, more up to date books.
4-0 out of 5 stars Parenting is not easy!
Wayne Dyer has brought his widsom and wit to the hard process of parenting with this inspiring but daunting how-to designed to raise "no-limit" children.Sadly, it's discouraging to realize the amount of hard work, discipline and self-control that are required from parents to pull off this challenging protocol for raising kids to be non-blaming, empathetic and self-confident adults. The main precepts tend to be repeated many times, but that's helpful for learning things well.As you might expect, there are plenty of helpful self-improvement tips for adults, who must really be exemplary people to follow the child-rearing advice Dyer gives. It would have been nice to have this book much sooner in my parenting career - now, as a grandparent, I'm finding it difficult to convince my daughter that the Dyer approach is workable.Even if you only adopt a few of his ideas, you will be rewarded, I think, with happier and better-adjusted children.

5-0 out of 5 stars You've got to read this book!
I received this book as a gift. There are quite a few books on this subject on the market and this one is the best. I too could not put it down and finished it in 3 days. It's a huge book, a great resource that is well researched and written.. I have a few friends who've purchased this book and really loved it too. I can highly recommend this book.
5-0 out of 5 stars One Way Ticket to Kansas
This book is a must have for all people who have a borderline person in their life. This book is an easy read and captures the true feelings a person without borderline personality disorder is experiencing. It has helped validate me as a person and has allowed me to move on.I highly recommend this book !!

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Read, Essential If You Care About Someone With BPD
In my opinion this is hands down the best book out there for dealing with someone with borderline personality disorder.Yes, there is SWOE and other books that are out there, but One Way Ticket To Kansas is the only book that I have come across that is writen from the perspective of a spouse. It is also the only book out there that explains in detail the eratic and seriouly disturbed behaviors the person with BPD directs at the person they are most intimatelyclose to, the spouse. The information in One Way Ticket To Kansas is easy to read, entertaining, and the author has a knack for explaining the complexities of bpd in easy to understand terms. While the book is sensitive to the person with bpd, it also does not pull any punches either and gives an honest look at the effects to caring about someone with bpd. This book will make many light bulbs go off in your head, and help you realize that you have had the power all along to find happiness. It's empowering to the reader and focusses specifically on the reader, not the person with bpd.Once you start reading this book you will not want to put it down. Then you will read it again as you will emotionally connect with the author about so many aspect of your life. This is a must have book. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars I hope you will never need this book ...
My husband was diagnosed with cancer when our daughter was just 9 months old.We are a little over 2 years into our struggle with his illness. I found McCue and Bonn's book immensly helpful at this difficult time.It covers everything from diagnosis, to coming home from the hospital or, God forbid, the parent's death. It also covers long term illnesses. The book is filled with practical advice. If you are struggling with a very sick parent (or other loved one) in your family right now, you need all the help you can get. After reading this book, I feel like I have the tools to help my daughter through this process whatever the outcome might be.It was incredibly helpful.

5-0 out of 5 stars A MUST READ!
This book is a tremendous resource for families who are facing serious illness and approaching death. The book gave me helpful advice on when to seek counseling help for my children, signals of depression and failure to cope in children, how to explain about hereditary diseases, and how to help children prepare to visit the hospital. In my own situation, my husband has a progressive muscular disease that has affected his lung/breathing processes. This disease can result in immediate death and I felt that my children needed to be prepared for that.I actually handled my chidlren's first trip to the hospital badly and they both reacted negatively--I wish I would have had this resource then! From time to time I refer back to this helpful book whenever a new situation arises and after reading it, I feel that I have a better understanding of how children see an illness, how they react to it, and how to explain it to them.I'd really like to see a sequel to it that goes into areas such as what to do when the kids are in denial and don't want to know; dealing with relatives who disagree with the methods chosen on helping the child deal with the illness, and how to handle emergencies that happen at home with the ill parent. In any case, this book is a necessity for families!

5-0 out of 5 stars A unique book to help you help others!
How to Help Children Through a Parent's Serious Illness is a wondeful resource for professional and home use! There are so many books designed to help children and parents with a child's illness but practically nothingavailable to help the children of adult patients deal with an adultillness, accident, or death. Kathleen and Ron are skillful and concise insharing dozens of pointers and case examples that will help any adult inthis situation. I work in a hospital and refer to the book often. We'veshared it with nurses and doctors-all have found it "right ontarget". I know it would be a wonderful resource for use at home too.Two thumbs up to Kathleen and Ron for filling a big gap! ... 4-0 out of 5 stars a very insightful tool
My husband and I have 7 adopted children. We raised our 4 sons, all grown now. They were adopted by my husband, as I was a "package deal" when we married. When our youngest son was in college and ready to get married, we adopted a little girl who was 5.She had been in Foster Care most of her little life, due to her mother's drug addiction, abuse and severe neglect. She had been in 5 homes and was not quite 5 years old yet. After having her for about a year, she wanted a sister. We were made aware of a little girl who had been adopted internationally but the adoption was dissolving. Our next daughter was almost 6 when she came to live with us.This was a private adoption, even though she had been in Ukraine up until the last 10 months of her life. She had left a best friend in Ukraine, so we adopted her 5 mos.ago directly from Ukraine, so this adoption was an international adoption. So we have had 3 girls in 3 years. They are all the same age for 1day every year. This year it was the lucky 7's.Next year it will be the crazy 8's. :)
3-0 out of 5 stars a bit negative
As a prospective adoptive parent, I felt that the book was negative and discouraging. It shows a one-sided view of adoption from the point of view ofsome adoptees. It was difficut to read because I kept feeling as if this is never going to work, the children who we are adopting will forever long to be with the biological parents. I know this is not true, but the author would want one think this.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must read, for any person, who was adopted, or any person who loves an adopted child
I am forever moved, forever enlightened, forever grateful, for this one written work. I am adopted; I am one in millions, who are adopted. I am also, one in 70% of us, who has never dealt with our identity crisis, our relationship issues, our demons. I am one, who finally wanted to find peace with my lack of identity. I am one, who after 45 years of testing every single person in my life, and their love, has said, I need to know why I am the way I am. This book, is like I was locked in a closet, and reading my deepest , darkest, secrets, the things I never could admit to myself....much less anyone else. This book, is "us" this book is a true, honest passage to a better way of life, for the adopted , and all the people who stand by us, no matter what , in their lives, by choice . We are loved, in great volume, but we never know it. This book makes us realize, and take notice, of the greatness we can be, and why we are not there yet. This book gives us freedom, from the guilt we feel, and it validates us, as a sub-culture, without identity. For the first time, in all my years, I understand my behavior....alone ..this is priceless. This

5-0 out of 5 stars All Diamonds In The Rough Need Polishing
This book is one of the gems -- a diamond in the rough -- on parenting. Written in simple language, it's the "basic course" on "HOW TO RAISE KIDS WITH SOLID CHARACTER, STRONG MINDS, AND CARING HEARTS". So read, use, and understand. Hmm. Understand? What do you do when the kids ask, "WHY?"! Hmm. You'll need a book that makes you understand -- in simple language -- the philosophy of WHY character counts, of right and wrong, of good and evil, of moral and immoral, and of ethical and unethical. The school that exists to teach the "advanced course" in "HOW TO RAISE KIDS WITH SOLID CHARACTER, STRONG, MINDS, AND CARING HEARTS" is West Point. The only book that explains the philosophy behind all the "WHYS" -- in simple language -- is the book titled "WEST POINT", by Norman Thomas Remick. It's THE companion book for all how-to books and "courses", basic or advanced, on parenting and character. It will become kind of an encyclopedia that you can refer to for explaining "WHY?" to your kids. And it will give Borba's diamond in the rough its required polish.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Challenging Way to Live!
"Achieve the goal of Constructive Living - to do everything well," says the book cover. Sounds impossible! In fact, the goal might be better phrased "to do everything with full awareness." That's what Reynolds espouses in this deceptively simple and extremely useful book.
5-0 out of 5 stars An oasis of sanity and reality in a confused world
I first came across "Constructive Living" in an audio catalog -- it stood out among the self-help and spirituality offerings for its practical, straightforward title. His book(s) and work have had a major influence in my perception of reality. In a world of confused and suffering people looking for ways to feel better, Dr. Reynolds offers "reality's reminders" that we have more control over our behaviors than we have over arising feelings or passing thoughts -- and that it may be more realistic to focus on behaving in a grateful, kind, positive way rather than waiting to have those feelings first. In this, his first book, he offers many such reminders that help us see ourselves, our relationships, and our world more clearly. One of the most helpful, sane, and realistic books I've read.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Simple, Effective Guide to Life
This is one of the most effective self-help books ever written. David K.Reynolds offers practical, simple, wise advice to people who have lost their way in this complex world. He advises his readers to accept their feelings, but to take the necessary actions to take charge of their lives. Dr. Reynolds write in a clear voice that eschews unnecessary psychological terms and victimization. He advise that the reader to take charge of his/her own life by facing reality and taking action. This is a practical, valuable guide to overcoming emotional trauma and the inevitable obstacles everyone faces in the course of everyday living. It is a rare book written by a wise man. I have given several copies of it to friends in distress and they have also praised its value. Dr. Reynolds has written a small book with heaps of wisdom. ... Read more
