5-0 out of 5 stars Good tool for beginners like me
Quick, handy suggestions, basic concepts syntesized in a (fortunately!) very brief book. You keep the treatises in your bookcase, and this one on your desk.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful
I owned this book when it was simply a self-published, Acrobat Reader, file. We used the text as a basic textbook in an introductory course in Family Therapy. Dr. Perry writes in a straightforward, non-technical, yet thorough manner. The reader will find the "Living into the Lesson" exercises at the end of each chapter particularly helpful.5-0 out of 5 stars Worth the read
I hate reading textbooks because they are written so dryly.Dr. Perry's book is written in an interesting, understandable, and applicable way.I have found this book extremely easy to read, often reaching the end of a chapter far sooner than I anticipated. His examples and practical manner of writing make concepts become clear. He offers "how to" approaches in different styles for the different types of problems that counselors might encounter.Definately a tool to keep close at hand for any new counselor. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Counseling Book Very helpful.
Easy to understand, well written book.
4-0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Introductory Book to Counseling
Nystul's "Introduction to Counseling: An Art and Science Perspective" is an excellent book for the beginning counselor either at the undergraduate level or the graduate level (we all start somewhere).I was assigned this book for my first Master's level class and it provided an excellent background into my chosen field. When I read the book, it cured a lot of questions that I had about counseling.I learned a lot of information that I either did not know or realize.Specifically, the book not only introduces the reader to counseling techniques, but also provides an overview of theoretical approaches, ethics and legal issues, assessment and diagnosis, and diversity issues. In addition, this book gives information on counseling approaches with various populations (i.e. child, group, family, school, career and mental health etc). Also, Nystul (1999) provided background information as well as practical techniques for each theory that he explained. Moreover, this book gives a superb rendition of various types of counselors and the description of duties that they perform. My favorite parts of the book are the "personal notes" where the author gives a story or example to go along with his discussion of a subject. The personal notes provide a great modality for the reader to look at a concept in a realistic or life-like manner. Most importantly, the book is organized extremely well and makes reading a lot easier than most textbooks; it utilizes pictures, diagrams, charts and etc. to get the point across in an effective and efficient manner. As a graduate student who utilized this book, I would highly recommend this book to professors, counselors and counseling students.Overall, it is an excellent source of background counseling information and for additional resources to aid in a person's development as a counselor. I almost forgot, the reason that I gave the book a 4 star rating and not a five is because general information about counseling can be quite dry reading material, it all depends on the individual reading it. Nonetheless, as mentioned previously, the author uses various techniques to help the reader absorb the necessary material (to become a counselor) in the most painless manner. Thus, the book gets my 4 stars. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Couples Issues: We Can Work It Out
This book is based upon an innovative, revolutionary twenty-year study. It is a simple-to-understand and clearly-worded guide that provides you with straightforward, scientifically demonstrated techniques that can help you make your relationship work.
4-0 out of 5 stars Great Tools
This book is easy to read, easy to understand, and offers a lot of hope.It gives you real tools to use.I wish it had focused just a tiny bit more on how you can only take care of yourself and your own point of view and emotions - or perhaps it would have been nice if they recommended a companion book on that subject - since it is such a large factor in relating. But overall I'd say it's a great buy for anyone looking to find ways to start improving their communication with anyone, right away.

5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely the Best Book on Relationship Communication!!!
My husband and I separated after years and years of the same problems that we couldn't resolve. Realizing that perhaps it's not just what we are saying to each other but HOW we are saying it, I bought 6 books on communication. This was hands down the best one.

5-0 out of 5 stars God's Word is Sufficent
This book is incredibly relevant for Christians today. The church has been infultrated with worldly methods and systems of counseling that contradict the Word of God.Adams shows the need for Biblcial Counseling and how all Christians are called to this ministry in one form or another. This is a tremendous book on this subject and is a great starting place for one who wants to know more about what Christians Counseling should be.

1-0 out of 5 stars Poor
It seems the author tries to sound smart using words and phrasing that go over the readers head. Other students in a class who were required to read this book said the same thing. Additionally, the author NEVER truly explains what nouthetic counseling really is (does not give a definition). Found the book to be extremely poor for the subject.

1-0 out of 5 stars More harm than help
Jay Adams has single handedly done more to do harm to mental health in the name of Christ than any other author in the last century. It is time that the concept of an individual's sin having a direct correspondence to their state of mental health be put to rest for good. A person with a massive coronary may need more prayer and to confess his or her sins but medical intervention is needed for a cure. In much the same way, a diagnosable mental disorder is in need of medical attention, and to counsel otherwise is irresponsible and the polar opposite of true Christ-like compassion. If one can justify the balanced use of the "medical establishment" for heart disease then the same justification can be made for treating mental illness. This publication, like most of his, should be avoided except as an insight into the ultra-conservative evangelical mind as it relates to mental illness. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Nice Idea, VERY Poor Execution (w/ Catholic bias)
This book attempts to cover most if not all the major areas of life in which we must make choices about who we are as individuals, what direction we wish to go. The title of the book suggests that the book's design is to enlighten the reader about the nature of such choices.
2-0 out of 5 stars Good for novice

This is a great book for someone trying to "find" themselves. It helps you reach inside of yourself to find the answers for questions that you have, but you don't want to ask anyone else because you're embarassed. It'll be a great book to read after five years and see how you have changed and grown.I'd suggest keeping a notebook to record your responses to the questions asked in the book and compare the answers after re-reading it a couple years later. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Over the top workbook
Be prepared to spend tons of time reading, answering multiple choice questions, hunting down answers in the back of this clumsy oversized book. It is too much of a pretty good thing.Needs reworking and a good editor to trim it down and make it more user friendly. It has more words in it than the book Becoming an Emotionally Focued Couple Therapist and duplicates lots that is in that book. They need to redo this and its companion as a set.Right now it is only the covers that go together.

5-0 out of 5 stars Clarifying the EFT Interventions
For me, this book supplied the logical missing piece after finishing the EFT Externship and beginning the supervision process. The book enabled me to reinforce on my own and at my own pace the steps, stages and interventions that I learned in the group context. Using this valuable tool, I was able to slow down and clarify the parts of the model which had been unclesr to me previously. The chapter on Impasses in EFT was an especially nice bonus. This book was the most valuable EFT book I have used thus far. Well worth the price. Paula Zerfoss, LCSW ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Helped Me With An Interview
I am in politics and have done a fair number of media interviews. One thing that set me off in the book was a quote from a journalist that politicians were no good at media. (The actual language is a lot stronger). At first I took offense, but after reading Merlis' book, I realized that most of us in the political arena are being overly formula-driven, canned, artificial and that this only adds to public disillusion with the political system.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Effective Resource for PTSD in Children
I first used Therapeutic Stories by Nancy Davis while working as an elementary counselor in Iowa City.I found the stories to be an excellent technique for discussing sensitive topics with traumatized children. One of the stories, The House and the Hurricane, allowed me to communicate witha severely withdrawn child. The story helped her to express the emotionalpain and fear of being with others. From this story we were able to moveto a concrete plan for building social supports at school. Many otherstories are equally valuable.I urge any therapist who deals withtraumatized children to check out this resource. With over five hundredpages it is like many books combined into one program. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The body does bear the burden
When a thoughtful individual takes the time to summarize 30 years of experience, I view this as a great gift. When his insights allow us to help in treatment, it is a blessing. His major thesis is that trauma, when it produces a chronic stress disorder, can manifest in peculair physical ways. This is the key insight and Dr. Scaer backs his observations with lots of clinical and research data. No doubt some will find this a rigorous read, but it is well worth the effort. I had the opportunity to try this theory. A teacher in a rough part of town ( I live in NYC) witnessed in his class a fight where a student viciously punched a girl in the head, when the teacher interevened, the next blow was to the back of his head sending him into the chalk board and breaking his glasses. He presented 5 days later with classic post concussion syndrome of impaired memory, inablility to read and other congnitve deficits. Before I read Dr. Scaer's book, I would have have not been able to treat him, for, from a medical point of view, it was all the brain banging aroung in his skull that caused this. However, Dr. Scaer made me think that this was instead a PTSD from having witnessed a vicious attack. I treated him with EFT and remarkably two days later he was normal! (This would have usually taken many weeks). We are all searching for ways to treat PTSD, but at least we can now view some mystifying symptoms in a model for which hopefully soon we will be able to fix. Kudos, Dr. Scaer.

5-0 out of 5 stars "Putting on the brakes"- making trauma therapy safer
This book is refreshing, well written and easy to read - it is full of sound common sense (something often lacking these days!) It stands on its own or can be read as a useful adjunct to Babette's earlier excellent book on the psychophysiology of trauma.Babette's wisdom, style and honesty around the many different approaches and tools for working with trauma are covered extensively and most usefully as fascinating case studies. I especially appreciated the chapter on learning from our mistakes and failures and the surprising fact that clients respect honest ignorance and they often don't get enough of it in the therapeutic encounter.Adaptability is the key word here..that is adapting to the unique needs of each client.Read more

This book offers a really good introduction to many of the primary post-Freudian theorists. It was clear to read and really provided a sound introduction to some complicated ideas. This book was better than the others of its type.Worth the investment.
